Traditional Men’s Hair Styles

While there are numerous short hairstyles for men that change quickly with trends, a few continuously stand out as the most popular cuts. These are truly timeless styles:

Business Cut

This is the quintessential business man’s hairstyle. For these styles, we use the clipper close on the sides, just above the ears, and around the nape. We then taper gradually to a longer length on top, generally 3-4″ in length. These styles are popular with business professionals because they provide a clean cut appearance yet are long enough to allow some flexibility in styling. Further, these styles are easily toned down to create a more causal appearance when no longer on the job.

Extreme Short Cut

Another very popular style is the extremely short cut which requires minimal styling effort. No fuss, no mess, no bother. Requiring just a shampoo, these hairstyles are perfect for a man on the go. The most popular is the high and tight. This is a militaryish haircut that is extremely close on the sides, closely faded into varying short lengths on top. Extreme short cuts do however require regular visits to your barber for its best presentation.

Buzz Cut

Then comes the haircut that you see all the boys sporting, the buzz cut. It’s exactly as you think. The buzz cut is characterized by its one length appearance. There is no fading. Only one clipper guard all over the head, then the edges are cleaned up to provide that finished appearance. Similar to the extreme short cut, this style requires very little daily maintenance and is ideal for men looking for minimal fuss in their daily grooming schedule. As a short cut however, this style does entail regular visits with a barber to keep it looking sharp.

Flat-Top Cut

One last style is the flat-top haircut, which is stylish and makes a statement. Men like this cut because it lends them a kind of tough-guy seriousness to their image. Drill sergeants, policemen, soldiers, and marines come to mind when one thinks of a flat-top. Though this haircut takes regular bi-weekly visits to a barber to keep it at it’s peak, I think there is nothing more striking than a perfectly presented flat top. This is a man who is in command of his world and values his style.

No matter the style you choose, regular maintenance of your style is important. How well you groom yourself is indicative of the care you put into the world around you and it implies conscientiousness, attention to detail, and preparedness.
How you look speaks volumes to those around you and good grooming ensures that you project the ever-necessary “first impression.” Ask your barber about any of these haircuts and how it will best fit with your style and needs.
