Leading the Way

Rusty Jones is the Emerson Salon manager but also does tremendous cut and color for men and women.

He just received a glowing review on our Yelp (one of many!) and we thought we would give him a blog shout out! Good job Rusty and keep it up! Seattle’s hair loves you!

I discovered Emerson when i was visiting Seattle and needed a last minute blowout. Most stylists would (and have) cringed and handed me to someone else…My hair is really long, really thick, and really color treated; a nightmare to some stylists, a fun challenge to others. Rusty was available and gave me a great blowout. He was also great to hang out with.

A couple months later I moved to Seattle (from L.A.) and needed to find a good colorist. It had taken me years to find one in L.A. that i was happy with. I like to keep my waist length hair various shades of fake (it’s gone from goth black, to cherry red, to blonde-ish and now back to red)

I thought i was in for quite a challenge to find a colorist i could trust and who wouldn’t be scared off by my great abundance of somewhat abused hair. I read many reviews on yelp , planning to interview various colorists…But Rusty, the sweet guy who gave me a last minute blow out was in the back of my mind. So i went back to Emerson and Rusty colored my hair. That was about 7 months ago, and i’ve never looked back.

Rusty is THE best colorist i’ve ever had work on my hair. He has taken my hair from a damaged, very dry state to hair that feels healthy, is shiny, and can be combed through with a fine toothed comb while wet! That is a miracle for hair that is as long, color treated, and thick as mine. Really. And about the color itself. Rusty really is one of the best. What first impressed me was that during our first consultation he looked at my skin and eye coloring, as if he actually cared about the specific color he would put in my hair. Many stylists don’t do this; i’ve seen enough to know. Rusty’s one of the really good ones who knows color and actually cares about how an individual client will look with the color they want. If he thinks a color will look bad on a person, he steers them towards something he thinks more suitable. He’s done this with me. Right now he’s been doing my hair red, and i think every incarnation has been great. The man knows color, and if he can make my mass of evil hair look and feel good, i think he can do it for anyone. Highly recommended.

Also, rusty’s great to hang out with during the 2+ hours it takes to color my hair.

The salon itself has a great, non- prissy attitude and neat steampunk design. The other stylists that work there are sweet to be around and also seem to know their trade quite well. If Rusty were ever unable to do my hair, i’d definitely trust one of the others! Everyone is very friendly in a genuine way, and there isn’t any awful snobbery that i’ve experienced in other salons. It’s a nice, welcoming atmosphere; the best i’ve ever found (and that includes many high end/ punk rock los angeles salons!!!) Rusty and the other stylists at Emerson are treasures!!!

A Blast from the Past

In our previous post we mentioned movie starlets and their hair. Here is Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich, Louise Brooks and Jean Harlow with covetous shiny hair from the 1920′s.

Sexy, voluptuous, tenacious, sultry, smart, – all the things us modern girls want to be!

Jessica Biel and the Hairstyles of the 1920′s

Hairstyles of the 1920′s were greatly influenced by the new technology and medium of film and movies as entertainment. Famous starlets of the time included Greta Garbo, Jean Harlow, Louise Brooks and Marlene Dietrich.

All of these women followed the European trend of “bobbing” their hair to above the shoulders. Hair paralleled fashion in that both were starting to allow women to express themselves and their style more freely. Shorter hair above the shoulders was considered extremely cosmopolitan and stylish. In fashion this was expressed through fresh colors and freely flowing fabrics like silk. Many of the bobs included the style of finger waving where hair is developed into waves and ridges off of an extreme part-line.

Here, Jessica Biel plays a character marrying into a wealthy family. She has begun to color her hair and this was the time period in which it became easier and more popular. Jean Harlow’s yellow-white hair is a perfect example of the type of style Jessica Biel’s character is going for.

To achieve this look: Towel dry freshly shampooed hair. Apply Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion and Moroccon Oil Styling Cream. You can either roller set your hair with 2-4″ diameter velcro rollers and go under the dryer OR blow dry hair and use a curling iron all over the head. Once curls are achieved, brush out the hair vigrously with a paddle brush. Comb Fudge Hair Varnish into the top of the head and begin molding waves and ridges into the hairline around the face. You can use bobby pins (until ready for spray) to hold the undulation desired. Brush the ends into smooth rolls or a messy fuller texture. Spray with Kevin Murphy Session Spray 5″ for hold and use a low level high heat dryer to “crisp” in the ridges.

Check out Jessica Biel in the new 1920′s period movie Easy Virtue in theaters this Friday.

Outdoor Fun this Long Weekend

This Memorial Day Weekend, are you attending an outdoor picnic, barbeque, graduation or concert? Don’t forget your hair can receive its own “sunburn” if not protected.

Any hair care product with a sunscreen will shield your hair’s structure and hair color from the harmful UV rays. A good one to try is Kevin Murphy’s Motion Lotion. It contains a great UV shield and also enhances curl, a blowout and is completely weightless. Without it, the sun will strip your hair’s inner moisture and lead to porous hair or split ends.

Take care of your skin and take care of your hair!
