I don’t go to concerts much. Mostly, it is because I don’t think there has been much noteworthy good music that I enjoy since the 80’s so I usually keep listening to the same goth and industrial bands and songs that I enjoy because it works for me. I have also been out of the loop in many ways, due to over-working, over-volunteering, college, etc.
I have vowed to change that. I went to see VNV Nation Wednesday night at the Showbox downtown Seattle. I had tickets to see them several years ago on their Empires tour, but drama-filled home circumstances prevented my attendance, but I digress.
VNV Nation is an electronic music band that I was hipped to when I moved here, along with Apoptygma Berserk, Wumpscut, and Snog. I had heard that VNV Nation put on a great show, and they do. VNV Nation is a duo, made up of Ronan Harris and Mark Jackson. Their style combines elements of
industrial music, trance, synthpop and
electronic body music (EBM). The “VNV” in the name stands for Victory, not Vengeance, in keeping with the group’s motto, “One should strive to achieve; not sit in bitter regret. I try to live my life in line with their motto, and for me, it was great to see two men up on stage who are not 20-somethings, are ex-computer geeks, love what they do, and want to know if their audience is happy and are having a good time. Here is a snippet from the show:
They say that nothing they have ever done or experienced before comes close to the feeling they get from performing and the connections with their audiences that they create.
