If the city goes ahead with it’s plan to close the TT Minor Elementary School at the top of Capitol Hill (corner of 17th and Union), New West Development suggests the city could create an important opportunity. While the closing of a school is a hugely sad and depressing occurrence, it does beg the question what is the best way to use this property.
The school currently is sitting on 3.5 acres of land at the center of one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhoods where large plots of publicly owned land are scarce to come by. Capitol Hill is growing significantly with new housing options and many new shops. So how can this land be used to best serve the neighborhood? Do we need another park? More high density and eco-friendly housing? Perhaps space for the arts and a public square? What do you think??
