Kevin.Murphy’s Top Ten Tips for Styling

Kevin.Murphy is a great product line. Sulfate and paraben free, it is based off of the idea that you shouldn’t have to work hard to have great hair. I recently discovered this list of their top ten recommended techniques for great hair using their products from their website.

    • If you have fine curly hair and want to enhance the curl without losing bounce. Use MOTION.LOTION and a dab of ANGEL.RINSE on the ends.
    • Want the curl to relax? Mix MOTION.LOTION with LEAVE-IN.LUXURY for the Rapunzel/mermaid look.
    • Add a drop of MOTION.LOTION to your ANTI.GRAVITY for volume, lift and soft definition.
    • Hair curly and a bit dry? Mix MOTION.LOTION and BORN.AGAIN for the ultimate leave in treatment with a silky feel.
    • If your curl is looking a bit yesterday, spritz with STAYING.ALIVE, leave for a second and give your hair a toss. Now you are today.
    • Banish the frizz on curls and relax the look with MOTION.LOTION in hand put up into a ponytail and wipe on MOTION.LOTION and go!
    • Afro to slickback, mix ROUGH.RIDER and STICKY.BUSINESS for flat, shiny hair
    • After blow drying with ANTI.GRAVITY, wipe on MOTION.LOTION to dirty up the do and give you a model look.
    • Fast hair, blast in ANTI.GRAVITY until the hair is dry and still slightly hot. Wipe in some HAIR.SCREEN, twist it up, untwist, shake and you have the instant glam do.
    • Dry in LEAVE-IN.LUXURY, rinse and forget the straightening irons. It will stay straight and will even keep away the humidity frizz.

I hope these tips from Kevin.Murphy will help you create that look that you’ve been trying to create. If you have any other questions about Kevin.Murphy products or how to use them, come in and have a chat with one of our skilled stylists.

      Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday”

      macminaj
The musical artist Nicki Minaj has bee gathering a lot of press lately. With her recent debut album release, “Pink Friday,” and M.A.C. releasing a Nicki Minaj inspired lipstick shade, Minaj is forging her way into the spotlight. Her new lipstick shade, a cotton candy pink will only be on sold November 26, December 3, December 10, and December 17. For more information on the Pink 4 Friday Lipstick, or to find a M.A.C. beauty counter near you, check out M.A.C. Cosmetics.

Minaj’s color changes often to many different colors. When thinking about dying your hair a more extreme color, sometimes it is a good idea to try out the hair color with a wig. Wigs are a great way to try out different colors before going to the salon.

      Nicki_Minaj_Pink_Friday_cover edit
To take natural hair to Minaj’s pink you will need to lift it to a light blond. Preparing your hair for the lightening process is a great way to maintain the health of your hair. D’Arcy goes over some great ways to prepare yourself for lightening services in her blog post, Burlesque Goes Blonde. After the lightening service, then the hair can then be toned or dyed to the color you want whether it be blue, green, violet, or in Minaj’s case, pink.

To maintain your color, be sure to get a color safe shampoo. I recommend using Alterna Caviar Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner, remembering to only shampoo your hair once to at max twice a week to retain as much of your color as possible for as long as possible. The Caviar Moisture Shampoo will give your hair the moisture that it will need while minimizing fading.

If you’re interested in going pink, or any other color for that matter, come down to Emerson Salon and book a free consultation with one of our stylists!

      Mirren Goes “RED”

RED is a movie that follow Frank Moses (played by Bruce Willis), retired CIA operative who is the new target of the CIA’s assassination plots. He and his fellow retirees team up to uncover the truth and save their lives. This action/comedy is something I highly recommend seeing. It opened on October 15th and has a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 170 reviews with an average rating of 6.3/10. Go see it before it leaves theaters!

      10012010_HelenMirrenRed
One of the retirees is Victoria, retired MI6 assassin, played by the wonderful Academy Award winner Helen Mirren. She has he hair cut to fall just at her jaw, making this much more of a low maintenance haircut. She was further given layers to reduce bulk and weight while giving a bit more shape to her curls and wave. Her bangs are cut to fall at her brow and slope to connect with the upper layers of the main body.

For her color, they used two different levels of blond to give her a very soft depth to her color. The lighter blond is placed in such a way that it makes if that more defining of the curl. Also with this light blond color, her eyes are made to seem just that more blue. Blond hair and blue eyes is a classic combination, though whenever going blond, you should consult with your stylist to make sure that it will work for your skin tone.

      mirrenred
To achieve the style that Mirren’s hair was given, one could start by using Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity then finger drying the hair. The hair would then be curled with a large barreled curling iron and then set to cool with large velcro-rollers. Once it has all cooled you can remove the rollers and brush out with a boar-bristle brush and finish it off with a spray of Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray.

Interested in making this look yours? Come into Emerson today and have a consultation with one of our stylist!

Warning! Though this trailer does show many more shots of Mirren’s hair, it also contains some violent behavior.

      Customized Hair Cocktails are here!

Do you even wonder why you can’t style your hair just like your stylist can? Here’s a secret- we usually use more than one product to do your blowout with!

      • One product is used as a base- to give you thicker strands, enhance your curl, or smooth your frizz.
      • The second product is used to enhance your texture and hold your style!

Alterna has made this process simple for you to do on your own, with their Styling Cocktails line. You get two products in one container that is divided into two sides. The containers have an adjustable dialer that, if set to the midpoint, will give you an equal balance of the two products inside.

For more customization, follow these simple steps:

      • Curl & Control shapes and condition curls and prevent frizz! Hold is light to medium. Simply twist the dial toward the left for more texture or toward the right for soft control.

      Curl&Control

      • Straight & Sleek straightens and smoothes your texture, eliminates frizz, protects from thermal damage, and adds glossy brilliance! Just slide the dial toward the left for more smoothness or toward the right for more shine.

      Straight&Sleek

      • Maximum Volume plumps fine hair, creates lift at roots, and protects from thermal damage. Hold is light to medium. Adjust the dial toward the left for more volume or toward the right for more hold, to create your perfect mixture!

Need all the volume you can get? Kevin.Murphy Powder.Puff is ideal for fine locks, both long and short. A weightless metamorphosis product it starts as a fine powder and changes to a lotion with a matte finish. Shorter styles can get lift and texture without a ‘product-y’ build up. All you need to do is lightly tap onto dry hair and emulsify to set then style and place as you will.

      Kevin Murphy powder puff
Sky’s the limit for volume with Powder.Puff, Anti.Gravity, and Session.Spray. Longer hair and curls can also benefit from added volume. For all hair types, apply sparingly to roots of dry hair for added volume.

      Burlesque Goes Blonde

The history of burlesque style theater is tied to its inherent meaning which means, “to send up,” or otherwise create a parody or exaggeration. Throughout the 20th Century we have come to know burlesque as slow stripteases with sexy dance numbers as seen in the movie Moulin Rouge. Our modern version would be the Pussy Cat Dolls who have been seducing audiences in LA with their sultry versions of old and new songs.

Soon we will be enjoying a star studded cast in the film,”Burlesque,” that releases Thanksgiving starring Cher, Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Hough, Kristin Bell, Alan Cumming and Eric Dane. The film follows Aguilera’s character as she arrives in the big city ready to take on the world as she cocktail waitresses and then auditions for the coveted chance of being in the burlesque spotlight.

For this role, Christina dons a long blond wig in the beginning of the film to reflect her naivete and innocence. Later, her character cuts her hair into a blunt bob and lightens her hair to pale blond to show off her brave, sultry and bold performances.

If you intend to be as light as her shade we recommend the following:

      • Book a color consultation with an Emerson Salon Stylist. If you have naturally lighter hair, this will be an easy all over color going lighter. If you have previously colored or medium brown or darker hair, this will be a bleach and tone or color correction service.
      • Deep condition your hair for 2 weeks before lightening your hair. Use Moroccan Oil Moisturizing Masque for 5 minutes after shampooing for up to 2X a week leading up to your color service. Lightening can cause moisture loss, breakage and frizz so the more you prep your hair for the service the better off your hair will be in the long run.
      • Factor in ongoing maintenance and support products into your budget for the service. We recommend Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner by Alterna Caviar for gluten, paraben and sulfate free care for your new shade. It has built in violet tones with optical brighteners that will keep your blond hue from fading into a brassy tone. Also, bleach and tone retouches are cheaper than the all over service but must be scheduled every 4-6 weeks to keep up the look as it grows out.
      • Some great products for styling:Alterna Radiant Smoothing Lotion which contains Rhodiola extract (antioxidants) and this product cuts down on blow dry time by 50% (which is great for porous hair that dries slower.) To finish, use Alterna Rapid Repair Spray which contains vitamin C and shine to control frizz and fly-aways.

Ever since Chicago and Dream Girls released, we have enjoyed more and more movie musicals like this one. Elevate your sense of style like these films do and come on in to Emerson Salon today!

From Witches to Pixies: Emma Watson’s New Style

On November 19th, Harry Potter:Deathly Hollows Part 1 was released, the second to last installment of the imaginative story of a young English boy who is swept up into the world of wizardry. Its hard to imagine that the books by J. K. Rowling have already been made into a full series of movies.

One of the Harry’s friends, Hermione, is played by the endearing Emma Watson who made her film debut in the series when she was 11. When we were first introduced to Emma, she had wavy/frizzy red brown hair and now she is all grown up! She not only acts but also models for the English based Burberry design house.

      emma_watson

Recently, in an effort to create a fresh slate after the completion of the Harry Potter series, Emma cut off all of her hair into a very chic Mia Farrow-esque pixie cut. The finger length hair cut barely needs styling and is probably really liberating. We love it! Other stars who have cut off all their hair recently are: Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, and Carey Mulligan. A great product to use on this haircut is Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna. It contains super shiny silicones and conditioning vitamins alongside moisturizing caviar extract.

If you are willing to try a drastic change we recommend discussing the haircut in a consultation with your Emerson Salon stylist. Only they can aid to custom design a short haircut that is perfectly suited to your hair texture, styling commitment and lifestyle. Book online today!
