Hair by Franz: Sarah’s Haircut and Hair Tattoo

Sarah

Last week I cut Sarah’s hair. Her hair is naturally curly, so when we cut it, we made sure to cut in a lot of texture to avoid having blunt curls. She had recently had a haircut so I mostly reshaped it and texturized what she had to upkeep it. She also wanted me to tattoo in a heartbeat ling into the side of her head. We decided in the end to push the envelope and put in two! Tattoos are a great way to put in some extra attitude into your look without having to commit to it for a very long time.

When we styled her hair, we used a few different products. She had very dry hair possibly from her repeated use of unprofessional color. Because of this, we decided to prep the hair with MoroccanOil Oil Treatment. We then used Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity to ad volume to her mohawk. Once it was dry, we prepped the hair again with Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager to prevent thermal damage from when we flat ironed her hair. Once it was all styled, we held it in place and emphasized her texture with Kevin.Murphy Texture.Master spray.

Do you think this look works for you? Have any questions? Feel free to book an appointment with me by calling 206-323-7437 or booking online at Emersonsalon.com or emersonsalon@gmail.com

Meet Our New Stylist: Franz

Screen shot 2011-06-21 at 5.55.09 PM

Whats playing on your screen?:
I love movies that are incredibly smart or dark like the Prestige, Inception, or Perfect Sense. V for Vendetta is another favorite as well as Sucker Punch. But I love things on the lighter side, like Studio Ghibli movies, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Easy A. But more than movies, I love Sci-Fi. So anything from Neil Gaiman, JJ Abrams, or Joss Weadon… or British.

What are your jams?:
There are so many to choose from! I love Ellie Goulding, Little Boots, Marina & the Diamonds, Rihanna, Lady GaGa, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry, Ke$ha, Nicki Minaj, Ducksauce, Panic! at the Disco, Walk the Moon, Muse, Metric, The Sounds, Fall Out Boy, and La Roux. But there will always be a special place in my heart for Amanda Palmer and the Dresden Dolls.

Whats your Favorite Restaurant:
Gotta love Grim’s, Podogs, Marination Station, and Barrio. Occasionally I veture off and grab a bite from the street dog vedor, Monster Dog, or go to Annapurna CafĂ© for some spicy chicken vindeloo. I love my food spicy!

Where can I be found on Friday night:
I going out and getting drinks with my friends around Capitol Hill. I especially love Grim’s for their food and drinks, Purr, and I’m really excited for The Social to open this summer!

What do you love most about being a stylist?:
I love sitting down with someone and creating a plan to completely change their look. I love planning out models and pushing the edge of my creativity on a project.

What is your Favorite Hairstyle?:

I love creating styles that have a lot of texture and a bit more edgy.

Favorite Product?:

There is no way I could pick just one. I love the MoroccanOil Oil Treatment. It helps make a foundation for the health of my hair. and My second favorite is Kevin.Murphy Texture.Master. It helps me create that voluminous textured punky look without feeling or looking like I have a lot of product in my hair.

Favorite Coffee House?:
I have a hard time choosing between them all. But I’d have to choose Caffe Vita since it is good and nearby.

Hair by Franz: Joe’s Haircut

07bce4946dcc4db6af33651e40374560_7

This Monday I cut Joe’s hair. Joe came in with a grown out haircut that he had been living with for the past three years that he was bored with. He needed something that could be styled up, out of his face and show off texture, while still being business friendly when he goes to work. We decided that we should keep most of the length up top, but trim down his sides.

When we we cutting the sides of his head, we chose to have it go shorter the higher we went, so as to avoid any “poofiness” that might occur in those areas. This also gave us the added bonus of additional support for keeping his hair up top to stay up. we also too out a lot of bulk up top that was just making it harder to style up.

When we were done, I styled his hair with Kevin.Murphy Texture.Master, a new texturizing and volumizing spray, and Gritty.Business, a gritty pliable hold paste. We blow dried the hair out of his face and to his left to get it big and poofy. then we sprayed the Texture.Master on the hair until we felt that the amount of texture we wanted was acheived. After that, we finished up with the Gritty.Business, messily working a small amount into the hair to add hold and give a bit more of a rocker look over all.

T.G.I.F!: Katy Perry’s Hair from Last Friday Night

Katy perry’s Music video for her song Last Friday Night shows her transformation from dental headgear to 80′s bombshell! The video is funny and entertaining with cameos and guest stars like Kenny G and Rebecca Black.

Getting this hair may be a definite challenge. You can go either one of two ways. You can either perm your hair to get those curls and leave the top front portion unpermed, or you can curl it yourself. I would recommend curling it yourself with a thin curling iron for a temporary style. To do this you would need to purchase a curling iron with the correct size barrel that you want your curls to be. Also, having a haircut with more layers in it is better for this style, or else you may end to much bulk at the ends of your hair.

Use Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity to blow dry the hair for as much volume as you can get. Then, once dry, spray the hair with Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager to protect the hair from damage from the iron. Then in small sections, wrap the hair around the iron, alternating directions as you go. On the top where she has her big curl, take that section and with a large curling iron, curl the hair in one large curl making sure the hair is thoroughly heated. wrap it so it curls away from your face. Pin the curls and let them cool in place, thus prolonging their life. Once its curled and cooled, then you may want to back comb the base of the front curls and anywhere else on the head where you want more volume!

New Inspirations!

We are extremely excited and inspired as stylists any time a new tool is introduced that we have never used before. Emerson Salon recently received a new concept in styling by Kevin.Murphy called the WAVE.CLIP. This well designed tool is intended to create soft, consistent, undulating waves on medium to long hair. Our receptionist, Ashley, graciously volunteered to let me play with them on her hair.

IMAG0283

We started with dry, stick straight hair and applied Anti.Gravity because of its style setting properties in addition to being weightless in the hair once heat activated. The product was applied to the midshaft to ends in order to maximize the style where we apply the clips (they open and close with just a click!)

IMAG0278

The point of the clips is two fold: 1) you use as many clips as needed to create a fluid wave from 3″ from the part line to the bottom of the section and 2) there are ventilation holes to aid in faster drying. Once all the clips were applied (see how Kevin Murphy demonstrates the WAVE.CLIP in the video below) I briefly used high heat on a low setting to activate the wave pattern in the clips.

Once the WAVE.CLIPs were quickly removed, the wave achieved was soft, shiny and great for a day at work or happy hour with friends! Just think how much time is cut out when you don’t have to curl or start from freshly washed hair. This look could be a great way to transition your hair from day into night, work into fun!

Want to get that quick, soft wave too? Book a styling appointment at Emerson Salon and experience a style revolution!

How to Get Alex Kingston’s Hair from Doctor Who

river-song-alex-kingston-3

The actress Alex Kington, most noted for her role on ER, has been an ongoing character on the British television show Doctor Who. As some of you may know, I am a big Doctor Who fan. With the mid-season finale of airing a few weeks ago, revealing many details to the mysterious character, River Song (Alex Kingston), I couldn’t help but talk about some of her hair that has appeared so far.

tumblr_ljvgp7UGU61qat2ico1_500

Kingston is asked to wear many variations to her naturally curly hair. For enhancing curls, I always turn to MoroccanOil and Kevin.Murphy. MoroccanOil Oil Treatment will hydrate her curls and then dried gently with MoroccanOil Curl Enhancer to add hold and define her curls. This combination will help reduce frizz, control curl, and hydrate the hair.

Kingston’s hair throughout the series is always as big as the mysteries she hides throughout the series. To get this volume in your hair gently blow dry it with a diffuser attachment to your blowdryer. This will weaken the flow of air from your dryer thusly reducing stress put on the curls. Use the diffuser to dry the hair upwards to maintain volume.

Use these tips to get your hair ready for adventure!

Ellen’s Adventure in Hawaii!

The sand is gone, my tan is fading and “Ya?” doesn’t follow every sentence…..Guess that means I’m back in Seattle!

As many of my clients know, I just got back from an amazing vacation to Honolulu, Hawaii! Here I wanted to write about the fun people’s mops I chopped along the way. I originally brought my shears to cut my friend’s hair (the one I was visiting) but quickly realized that I could trade my hair services for great connections and fun experiences in Hawaii. Plus the island vibe makes it easy to meet people, especially when you travel in a group of 4 girls who start conversations with ANYONE.

One of our first nights there we met a fun group of local guys who surf. We soon began negotiations to trade surf lessons for haircuts. A few days later, there we were in one of the guy’s apartments. I cut his hair in trade for paddle boards, beach chairs and umbrella service on Waikiki.

Meet the first connection I made in Hawaii, Shawn Pila. He’s a photographer/musician/surfer brah living the life in Honolulu. If you want a glimpse of Hawaii through a great perspective, check out his website and if you REALLY want to feel the Island vibe check out his band’s Facebook page, Surewhynot. Pretty awesome!

photo

Shawn wanted a shorter but still shaggy haircut. Basically he wanted to get out of the water, shake his head and go. So I tapered in the back neck line using shear over comb technique. I took the back shortest and left the sides a little longer to allow it to flow into the top length. The top length was left longer so he could still style it. The whole cut was texturized, meant to lay messy and in no way “clean cut”.

photo (1) photo (3)

Now for the second connection I made in Hawaii. We went to Sansei on Waikiki for sushi and karaoke one night. Our fantastic waiter, Daniel Sobalvarro, made the experience totally worth the wait at the door for happy hour! Through conversation, again, it comes out that I’m a stylist and the next day I find myself arranging another drive by haircut. In true Hawaii fashion we venture to his house for a quick haircut. While chopping his mop I find out Daniel is getting his own catering company off the ground. He has a passion for food and the gift of conversation, I have no doubt his catering company will be doing big things soon. Now my girl friends that live there have a friend at Sansei, 50% off happy hour!

For his haircut he just wanted it cleaned up, over the ears, with a little more length on top to wear it forward. Easy enough right? This time I was smarter and took some fun before and after shots.

After:

Hope this was a fun blog to read. I thought Seattle could use a little Hawaiian spirit. Refreshing and fun, ya?!

Enjoy, Mahalo!

Possibilities with Extensions!

I have been doing Babe Extensions for a while now. Clients often ask how the extensions work and why you would get them done. I recently did a half head of extensions for a client and wanted to share it with all of you!

IMG_1799

This particular client came in for pink extensions. She wanted to add pink to the underside of her hair without damaging it permanently. Extensions are the best way to do that, and I often recommend extensions to be used that way. You can add a few fun color pieces for something exciting or the whole underside like she had me do. This particular client had a lot of hair, so we ordered 4 packs of Babe Pink Reme hair and put them in row after row in the underside of her hair. We used all but a few strands on the underside, so we added a few fun pieces in the front. The results were exactly what she wanted without the damage to her hair. Babe Extensions come in a whole range of colors and shades, both fun and natural. There is always a match for your hair color!

IMG_1798

Are extensions for you?
Do you want to add length/ fullness to your hair?
Do you want to add fun colors without damaging your hair?
Are you sick of your fun colors fading?
Do you need extensions for an event and want to take them out easily after?

IMG_1797

Then Babe Extensions are great for you! Babe Extensions go on the hair in individual strands, connected with a grooved bead. The single strands ensure a natural, blended look and the beads allow you to bond the extensions to your hair without damage or messy glues. You can use these extensions to make your hair longer (they come in 18 or 24 inch lengths) or just to add more fullness to the length you have. Like the client pictured you can also use the extensions to add fun colors to your hair without having to bleach out your natural hair. This way there is no process on your hair to cover or change, and you simply take out the extensions when you’re done. The color also never fades on the extensions; your fun colors will stay bright wash after wash! The best part is, if you take care of the hair extensions you buy, they can be used many times in many ways. You can always take them out and use them later for a new look or event.

Still have more questions about Babe Extensions? Feel free to call or email Emersonsalon@gmail.com with any questions you hav. We can also set up a free consultation anytime!
