Style Shifts in Hollywood

It seems now is the time to change hair looks- from Hollywood, to New York, from music to film, and from celebrity to everyday jane!

Here we look at a fun, outside the box change with Lauren Conrad’s new blue and purple hair tips. This is an easy way to transform blond hair into a more vivacious and bold, new look! We love this spunky new addition that transforms her from her usual put together look into a more effervescent beauty!

To style: Rough blowdry with Anti.Gravity by Kevin.Murphy. Spray in Hair Resort Spray By KM and curl with a large barrel curling iron. Finish with Rapid Repair Spray for shine by Alterna.

For a few days, people thought Vanessa Hudgens was sporting a short wig for a film but alas! it was actually a drastically shorter do! Vanessa has naturally wavy hair that is very thick and dense and has been long ever since she debuted in High School Musical. This cut is great as it still softens her and actually aids in making her look taller as the petite Vanessa was visually almost overpowered by her hair length. The perimeter hits past the ears and leaves a rounded nape in addition to long layers that are pulled back away from the face.

To style: Apply MoroccanOil Glimmer Shine to towel dried hair and dry with a medium sized, round bristle brush away from the face. To finish, lightly spray Texture Master by Kevin.Murpy for movement, height and hold.

Lastly, we came to know Evan Rachel Wood’s True Blood character Queen Sophie-Anne LeClerq as a feisty, redheaded lesbian vampire. Recently, though, Evan opted to completely alter her look into a shorter do with cropped sides and a longer, textured top. She also toned down the red by “browning out” the sides and nape in addition to bleach and toning the top into a beige blond with a balayage technique.

To style: On dry hair apply Night.Rider by Kevin.Murphy to the top lengths for texture and height. Then spray with Session.Spray by Kevin.Murphy for height and hold. Tip: Using your fingers and a medium heat blow dryer will help set the hair spray when creating height.

Looking to shift your style, too? Subtle or Dramatic we are here to serve at Emerson and we give you,

Fresh and New Musical Style

Are you looking for the next Seattle music and style icon? Look no further! One of my clients, Katie Kate, is a super talented songwriter, rapper, and sound engineer. She recently finished up an album that promises to transform her into a real force like her mainstream counterparts: M.I.A., Nicki MInaj and others. We can’t sample anything (yet!) but in anticipation of all the new attention she will get, Katie Kate gave me the opportunity to completely change her look.

272020_10150218092795732_366130840731_7183821_1503053_o 258244_10150218092705732_366130840731_7183816_26657_o 265336_10150218092460732_366130840731_7183804_1506123_o 256932_10150218092625732_366130840731_7183812_2516565_o

Katie Kate started out with extremely dense, wavy/curly hair past her shoulders that I have been trimming and thinning for the last couple years. For her new look, I started out with my Andis Master Clipper to get the bulk of the length off. Kate wanted to take her hair off in stages as this was a drastic change she had never tried but was excited to embrace! Then I used my Oster 76 Fast Feed clippers and “buzzed” off the one side to an extremely shorter length.

Kate decided she wanted a “cut out” pattern in the shorter side and decided upon a “sine wave” pattern. A sine wave is a sound wave with smooth, repetitive oscillation. Kate knows her stuff and this was a perfect opportunity for it to show up (literally) on her hair. I used my edge trimmers to create this effect by starting off with hair adhesive tape to get the crisp, horizontal line. Then I freehanded the fluid line with patience as the grain of hair can present challenges with creating a smooth line.

277740_10150229176200732_366130840731_7298843_2913934_o

For the rest of the haircut I created an inverted (asymmetrical from back to front) long bob with thinned out ends and trimmed swoop bang.
To style: Apply MoroccanOil to towel dried hair and round brushed section by section from nape to top.
To Finish: Flat ironed the entire head from mid shaft to ends and lightly sprayed with Alterna Caviar Working Spray.

I am SO excited to hear Katie Kate’s entire album! You should be too!

Karolyn Kukowski’s hair of the band Witch Gardens

227299_573477554666_44502126_32286661_1669384_n

One of my clients, Karolyn Kukoski, sings and plays the autoharp in the band “Witch Gardens”. She also has a degree in Criminology. Karolyn’s hair is long, fine, wavy, and blond. I keep her hair’s
length long and I cut her bangs long and leave them full. She has blond hair naturally but likes it to be a few shades lighter. I lighten her hair to a very light blond- this enhances her skin tone and opens up her face even more.

Witch Gardens will be playing at the Capitol Hill Block Party this Saturday, on the Vera Stage, from 4:00-4:30. Come check them out!

Hair by Lancer: Christine’s Cut and Color

Christine_3>

One of my favorite clients, Christine, had been growing out her hair for awhile and her vivid red color had faded out over the past year to a brown base color with grown-out blond highlights. Her skin tone is not suited to warm colors, and she has a series of interviews coming up this week so I saw her this past Sunday.

Her hair was long, fine, and flat. I cut some long layers into her hair and trimmed the ends, keeping her length and giving her a new style to work with.

Christine_2

Her color change is amazing and really enhances her skin coloring and brings out her pretty eyes. I colored all of her hair first with a Chili Pepper medium brown color, which is a violet-brown and is well-suited for those who are naturally brown and who have brown eyes and paler skin tones. I then Balayaged new highlights onto her hair with a gentle lightener that we use at the salon that contains lavender, as to protect Christine’s hair health. After her hair lightened sufficiently, I applied a bright red vivid color over her highlights. Here is the result!

If you haven’t had your hair done in awhile and are looking for a change, feel free to book an appointment with me by calling 206-323-7437 or booking online at Emersonsalon.com!

A Look to Suit a Dandy

Brendan3

Brendan is known as a dandy. He is always dressed to the nines and has killer shoes and boots! I have been cutting his hair for awhile and wanted to give him more styling options, as he does vary his look. He also has picked up fencing as an activity, so we had to keep his hair on the shorter side.

Brendan’s hair grows out faster in the back so I tapered the sides and back of his hair close to his head and blended upward to the top, leaving the front longer so that he can style it out of his face.

To style this cut, Brendan cocktails Kevin.Murphy’s Motion Lotion and Body Builder products in his hands and scrunches the product into his hair. He then uses a hair dryer and a brush and styles his hair off off his face and to the side just a bit. Finally, his style was set with Kevin.Murphy’s Texture.Master, strong hold texture mist that is invisible and weightless.Check it out here!

Are you a dandy in need of a new look? Book an appointment online with me at http://www.emersonsalon.com and I will be happy to create a new look for you!

New 5 Star Review for Franz- “Franz is an artist with hair..”

Check out the latest 5 star review for Franz

“The salon is clean and has great music. The receptionist is friendly and inviting.  I had a cut and color by Franz.

I have difficult hair to cut and coloring can sometimes be challenging.  I went in with a basic idea of what I wanted.  Franz listened. I asked if he had any ideas. WoW! He carefully gave great detail on enhancements to my original idea.  I went with it.  He double checked with me and showed me the colors that I had requested.  He was able to adjust the colors so there were exactly what I wanted.

The cut was perfect. The colors were amazing. I’ve never had so many compliments on my hair. Franz is an artist with hair. On top of that he’s very friendly, gives great hair care tips and recommends the product that would work for me.  The hair product I bought is incredible. He wasn’t just selling stuff.

By recommending Franz I have kept my integrity in tact.  No warm fuzzies just because it would make him feel good.  Give Franz and Emerson Salon a try. It worked me and I think it will work for you.” (Yelp Danny)

Check out some of his latest work:

Think any of these are a good look for you? Book an appointmnet with Franz by calling 206-323-7437 or book online at Emersonsalon.com or emersonsalon@gmail.com.

Scalp Annoyances? We have a solution!

Recently we have had quite a few clients come in asking for scalp treatments. Emerson Salon offers two MoroccanOil Balancing Scalp Treatments; one for dry scalps and one for oily scalps.

salon-original-dry-no-more

What is Dry Scalp?

It occurs from using harsh hair products and/or harsh shampoos and conditioners, hard water, winter weather and dry skin, over washing, over brushing, and/or scratching your head when you shampoo or condition it. If you must shampoo your hair every day, we recommend using a dry shampoo. Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo is one of the best and it is made from a French clay instead of talc, as talc can be toxic and may be cancer-causing.

Sun and high-heat hair appliances also dry out your scalp. Also, if you don’t condition your hair, it may result in dry scalp. Dry scalp is commonly mistaken for dandruff, which is it not. Real flakes are large and waxy in texture. Dandruff is a medical condition caused by a fungus causing the shedding of skin cells.

What is Oily Scalp?

It is caused by poor hygiene, hormone imbalances, and genetics. “Doctors at Derma Doctor diagnose heredity as the single main cause of excess oil production in the scalp.” “Dihydrotestosterone, a hormone and genetically linked trait, is one of the main factors. If your relatives and immediate family have a history of oily scalp, then chances are that you will, too.”

Avoid brushing your hair vigorously, as doing so will bring the oil down into the rest of your hair.

MoroccanOil Scalp Re-balancing Treatments:
A 10-minute in-salon invigorating scalp massage treatment, which increases scalp circulation and balances our clients’ scalp issues. These treatments are infused with essential oils such as organic ginger, lavender and geranium extracts, which calm and improve the condition of your scalp and the quality of your hair. The treatment oil sets in your hair for 10 more minutes. Further care is taken by shampooing your hair with MoroccanOil Moisture Repair Shampoo and conditioning with MoroccanOil Moisture Repair Conditioner. These hair care products further moisturizes both your hair and your scalp and are color safe, sulfate, phosphate, and paraben free. Finally, we blow dry your hair after applying the MoroccanOil Treatment, which revives, strengthens and conditions the hair, as well as reducing the hair’s drying time.

Note: We also offer both the MoroccanOil Dry-No-More and the Oil-No-More Professional scalp treatments for your DIY use.

Katy Perry’s Color Adventure

There has been a lot of talk on twitter lately since Katy Perry tweeted, “So I didn’t get to the exact color I wanted from being black for so long! To get to goal I have to be a ginger for three weeks!” (US Weekly). Katy has worn many different hair looks from colored wigs, colored extensions, to elaborate hair creations for videos and gorgeous red carpet looks.

Some might ask, why does Katy Perry have to wait for the color she wants when she has access to the best products and top of the line services? This is something I tell many of my clients who want to go significantly lighter on previously colored dark hair: Black and Natural Black hair colors are the most difficult to remove from the hair.

When lifting the hair it is easier to soften the hair color to brown or red but lifting past the brassy or orange stage can be a challenge even for the most seasoned stylist. I ask my clients whether they feel committed to the dark hair color for at least 6 months to a year because frequent color changes can cause major breakage and color fading and inconsistencies. I generally recommend using a demi-permanent darker shade to avoid such issues in the future.

As a stylist, I have encountered the “Bleach Wall” which means that after extensive bleaching to lift the black color out that the hair will decide not to lift any more. Hair can only take so much and the last thing anyone wants is a “chemical” haircut where you lose density and length due to extensive damage. So, in order for Katy Perry to keep as much of her hair as possible it is necessary to give the hair a week or two break. During this time it is best to do as much deep conditioning as possible. We have a few we carry at the salon:

  • MoroccanOil Restorative Masque goes on damp hair after shampooing and is left in for 2o minutes at room temperature. This contains protein, shea butter, canola oil, vegetable protein and keratin.
  • Born.Again by Kevin.Murphy goes on damp hair and under heat for 20 minutes. It contains natural anti-oxidants and botanicals such as rose hip and rose absolute which are intensive hydraters and regenerators.
  • An in salon treatment called Caviar Rejuvenation Treatment (CRT) that contains 3 steps and takes up to an hour to complete. It contains no sulfates, parabens, gluten, dea, paba, paraffin or pthalates. It does contain skin enzymetherapy, seasilk and uva/uvb protection. This service can be done the same day as the initial bleaching process but is recommended as a preventative tool rather than an aid in additional bleaching the day of.
  • After the hair has taken a well deserved vacation from bleaching, high heat tools and sun then the final step of lifting through the “ginger” can be achieved. The hair will still be delicate and must be treated with the ultimate care with professional level shampoos and conditioners like Alterna’s Bamboo Anti Frizz line which not only helps smooth down the roughed up hair but is also color safe.

We can’t wait to see what haircolor Katy comes up with after her “hair break”! What color will you change to? Book a consultation today!
