BRAZILIAN BLOWOUT IS BACK!!!!

The Brazilian Blowout treatment is back, and I like it! Doing smoothing treatments has been one of my specialties for a while. I’ve had mixed results with a few of the different brands, but, this one seems to be the best one. Come in and see me for a treatment! The price is dependent on length and thickness, starting at $90.

“Through the use of a Brazilian Super Nutrient Complex and a proprietary polymer system, the Brazilian Blowout actually improves the condition of the hair by creating a protective protein layer around the hair shaft to eliminate frizz and smooth the cuticle.”

London Looks

In the hair industry, attending regular ongoing education is recommended to stay current and strong on trends, techniques and styling tips. The goal is to keep skills fresh and fun while still introducing practicality to our clients in the salon. D’Arcy Hair Design (at Emerson Salon) recently attended a labelm haircut demo fashion show at 1927 events in Seattle, WA. Labelm is the newer product line from the geniuses who helm Toni & Guy London. (FYI: TIGI in the US is not owned by Toni & Guy.)The entire weekend was helmed by the International Artistic Director, Anthony Edge, who tours the US sharing looks and education from his base in Miami. Although we do not carry the labelM products, we do love to learn from all sources in the hair industry.

Anthony previewed the hottest looks from their 2013 Look Book collection that literally released this month! The pictures above show you some of what he shared with us and emphasized techniques like disconnection, offset perimeters, and overdirection. These are terms for different ways to section and conduct haircuts that stray from the traditional, commercial approaches we are taught in school. These techniques emphasize movement, slight asymmetry and style versatility and tend to be quick and fun to style. As they say, the cut is the style!

D’Arcy also had the pleasure of attending a “Creative Cutting” class conducted by Anthony Edge the day after the demonstration show. There, she was guided on how to create a cut called “The Terrin.” The goal of this haircut was to create an “offset” bob length with tons of movement. Off set is where the front pieces are slightly uneven so this is different than asymmetry. Asymmetry is the type of cut that has more severe disconnection between the sides when looked at head on. The sides and nape in the terrin were established with layering and a set perimeter after. Then, the top and crown were disconnected subtely longer from the underneath and overdirected to one side. It was a lot of fun to do and was a great way to freshen up Alexandra’s look without going too short.

Want a sassy and fresh new look? Book with D’Arcy for a cut or color Wednesday through Saturday!

The Hairstylist Life

Everyone is becoming increasingly comfortable with mobile technology combined with social media . Services like Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest capture real time trends in art,pop + culture while also creating space for interaction for its users.

Now there is something geared towards the design junkies, the rockband officianados, the style mongers and the hair hipsters.

Bangstyle.com and its accompanying app really takes this concept of shared imagery and artistic ideas to a new level. Users can login and create a profile of inspiring ideas or images and can also share images they have created themselves. It gears entirely towards a community comprised of people sharing visuals. Doesn’t matter what genre- from music, to hair to art the idea is to bring everything to the table. They have articles on every topic and encourage users to log in for new stuff each week.

Its a GREAT place to get new hair ideas for cut or color especially if you like to stay super fresh! Its a chance for everyone to be a HairStar.

One of our Emerson stylists was interviewed for the website as a “Featured Stylist,” this week, Here’s an excerpt:

“While many of us have taken scissors to our own hair as children, most of us didn’t see that as a sign to pursue a career in the hair industry. D’Arcy’s mother suggested cosmetology school after seeing her daughter grow up cutting and coloring her own hair from a young age, and it turned out to be the perfect path for her. Now D’Arcy Harrison is working at Emerson Salon in Seattle’s Capitol Hill with her company D’Arcy Hair Design and was awarded with the Top Stylist name by Seattle Metropolitan Magazine.”

The article goes on to talk about D’Arcy’s experiences in the hair industry, her goals, hair tips, professional advice as well as examples of her editorial work.

Ladies Of Mischief

At Emerson Salon, if you walk in to our front area you might notice some cool decorations of clock gears as well as nice, dark colored bureaus for stylist stations. This is part of our “steampunk,” theme. What is steampunk you ask?

“Steampunk is characterized by a setting in which steam power predominates as the energy source for industrial technologies, inspired by the 19th century………. Steampunk perhaps most recognizably features anachronistic technologies or retro futuristic inventions as people in the 19th century might have envisioned them, and is likewise rooted in this era’s perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. Such technology may include fictional machines like those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, ….” (excerpted from Wikipedia)

In the same guise, a very talented group of knitters and crocheters named, “The Ladies of Mischief,” have created a steampunk yarn pattern and photography book that not only shows their abilities but also creativity. They also included snippets about their ladies’ imagined biographies and writings.

D’Arcy (of D’Arcy Hair Design at Emerson Salon) assisted this talented crew with the highly stylized hair required for such an endeavor! This book has been 2 years in the making and we are so proud to share it with you! To peruse or buy go to: http://www.cooperativepress.com/shop/needles-and-artifice/

Have you heard of Balayage and Ombre Color?

I have mentioned that I have been studying Balayage for some time. I have recently attended a hands-on all day training, where I honed my balayage skills through learning the “Riviera” technique from Daniel Keane, owner of Salon Serenza and one of the IT&LY Academy Team Directors. IT&LY Hairfashion is the color line I predominately use because has the best technology and delivers the best results. It contains the lowest ammonia content that is necessary to achieve the best color results. The reason I continue to study balayage is because “performing balayage is time consuming, and it requires a good eye and a very steady hand” [Wisegeek]

Wisegeek describes Balayage well: “A hair coloring technique which is designed to create very natural-looking highlights which grow out without developing a noticeable and obvious root. Many stars and models use balayage on their hair, and in response to popular demand, many salons offer balayage, especially in urban areas. Some pride themselves on their balayage technique, considering themselves artisans of the craft and offering training to people who are interested in learning balayage.”
Other trends in hair color include Ombre hair coloring, which is similar to balayage: “Ombre hair has a distinctive color pattern that is dark close to the scalp and light further down the hair’s length. The dark base typically ranges from medium brown to black. This color is generally solid from the roots to the midsection that is roughly parallel to the middle of the face. Lighter ombre highlights make up the bottom half of the hair color, and these can be shades of light chestnut, auburn, or golden blonde. Ombre hair color is usually done only on long hair that falls below the shoulders in order to completely achieve this unique finished look” [Wisegeek].

This is a good example of what an Ombre looks like:

Prepare your Hair for Summer Sun

I’d hate to see your fire red mohawk turn pink or orange, your golden blonde wash you out, or your cool brunette turn brassy! The sun is out in force and it’s time to not only break out the sunscreen for your skin but it’s also time to protect your color from fading prematurely!

Luckily, Alterna’s UV+ line was recently created for you. It is Clinically proven to protect your hair color from fading for up to 60 washes. If you wash your hair once a day, that means your color will last for two months when you use the UV+ products. In two months’ you’ll have new growth that will need re-touched. Don’t you want your hair to look its best for as long as it can?

The UV+ line contains Kalahari Melon, from a desert in Africa. Nature has given this melon its own UV protectant; the melon stays bright in the sun year-long. If you enjoy activities that include salt water, chlorine pools, lake water, and/or the sun, the UV+ Fade-Proof Fluide is waterproof and protects against these things when sprayed onto the hair before going out into the sun or getting into a body of water. Just spray it onto your hair and you’ll have a micro-thin, waterproof barrier that protects your hair from salt, chorine, water, and/or sun. Basically, it is “sunscreen for your hair”.

Gone on vacation somewhere hot, only to come back home with your hair wrecked? Get your hair some rehab quick! The UV+ REHAB Deep Hydration Masque, that is. In just 3 minutes, you can restore your hair’s flexibility, strength, and moisture balance with a powerful blend rich in amino acids, sugars & minerals.

Disclaimer: Hair products cannot be labeled as containing SPF but every Alterna product has UVA and UVB inhibitors and clients will see results right away.
