American Idol’s Best Hairstyles of 2010

Over the years, many American Idol contestants have pushed the envelope when it comes to their hairstyles. From trend setters like Kelly Clarkson and her “chunky highlights” to Sanjaya and his ridiculous mohawk and even Adam Lambert with his slick and shiny emo do. However, this year’s top 12 contestants seem to be a bit more tame when it comes to their lovely locks.

Siobhan Magnus, is adorable with her edgy take on the bob. Ask your stylist for a layered, a-line bob with fringe that just hits the eyebrow. For her color, ask for a rich brown with slices of highlights or a technique known as balayage. The awesome thing about this look is that it looks adorable with different hair accessories and can also be worn curly.

Didi Benami keeps her look fresh and feminine with soft curls and golden blonde highlights. Her long layers and subtle color gives her a very fresh and natural look. Ask for face framing layers and a deep side part. Style with a round brush and big barrel curling iron on the ends – curling away from the face.

As for the boys, nothing too out of the ordinary there either. Though I must say that Casey James has beautiful hair. Hair that I would love to have. His sunkissed hightlights and soft wave that are au naturale is the look that tons of women pay big bucks for. I just wish he would leave it down more often.

Quick Fixes for Common Hair Issues

Life happens and we don’t always have time to fuss with our hair as much as we’d like. To most of us, looking good and feeling good is important and all of us have some kind of issue with our hair. Whether it is limp, dull, frizzy, or just a little lack luster from time to time, I have some simple solutions for the girl/guy on the go.

-1

Problem – You’ve woken up late and your hair is looking a little flat, but you don’t have time to start styling it from scratch. Solution – Membrane Gas by Fudge. This will give texture and volume to the limpest of hair. Use it as a hairspray for hold or for texture by manipulating the hair with your fingers while applying. The awesome thing about this product is that it actually has “memory,” meaning you can brush it out and rework the hair to your desired shape simply by applying a little more. Big hair, great texture and flexible hold. What more could you ask for?

-3

Problem – You’ve recently had a chemical service on your hair and it is just looking a little dry and dull. Washing it too much doesn’t do much but dry it out more, over-conditioning leaves it oily and leaving it alone drives you crazy. Solution – Moroccan Oil Glimmer Shine Spray. Apply to dry, dull hair to bring out the shine and shimmer. It is infused with argan oil and UV filters to protect from further damage do to the elements. This light weight shine is easy to use and long lasting.

-4

Problem – Curly hair that is frizzy due to weather or just natural texture. Solution – Alterna’s Shaping Balm. When applying this to dry hair it acts as an anti-humectant. It will smooth out any frizz and leave pliable, shiny curls. Plus, Alterna products are all paraben and gluten free.

Whatever your specific hair issues, there is almost certainly a solution out there. For more helpful tips, come on in and see one of our stylists here at Emerson!

Emily and Amanda’s Favorite Things for Spring

EmilyLikes

Emily says: Caviar moisture shampoo & conditioner are a must, sulfate & paraben free great for moisture repair and skin renewal. The technology in the Caviar line is very similar to my favorite face creme La Mer. Moroccan Oil’s oil and mask are great for intensive treatment and repair, blocking UVA and UVB rays. The Stella McCartney roller ball fits perfectly into a pocket or clutch. I cannot leave the house without my Dior lip gloss. Jo Malone creme makes me feel pretty and energized for an early Spring. Amanda says: Spring is here and there are a few things that I must have on hand. My beauty regiment changes a bit with the warmer weather and the sun shining. Makeup of course gets brighter as do the colors in my wardrobe. I have put away my hats and scarves and pump up my hair with some new products. I start with Fudge’s Membrane Gas – applying it to damp hair, mostly at the root will give my hair some lift, aka Bridget Bardot hair. I then smooth out my ends with a bit of Alterna’s Radiant Smoothing Lotion. In the event that my hair feels a little damaged due to overexposure to the sun, I break out Kevin Murphy’s Born Again treatment. I apply it to damp hair and let it sit anywhere from 2-20 minutes, rinse and style as usual. View Amanda’s complete collection details.

Is Balayage Right For You?

Balayage

Heard of balayage but not sure what it is exactly? Is it for you? What does it even mean? I will tell you!

Balayage is a French term that was developed in the 1970s that means “sweeping” or “to sweep.” It is essentially named after the way in which the color is applied to the hair. It is actually swept on or painted on by hand leaving a more natural looking highlight or lowlight. The technique was developed as a new way to add variation to the hair color with a more natural appearance and a more subtle grow out. The color can be applied for a more bold variation or slight depending on the client. Balayage isn’t just for lightening either. Many stylists will use it to add lowlights or a combination of the two.

-2

Who is balayage right for? Balayage is a technique that is great for anyone who appreciates a little versatility in their color but who doesn’t have time for a lot of maintenance. It also works well for the client who likes a more sunkissed or natural look. It is a great technique for shoulder length and longer hair. Balayage is the perfect color technique for summer, as it offers the same benefits as someone who would be spending a lot of time outdoors. I wouldn’t recommend it for someone with a lot of grey or shorter, finer textured hair.

The technique, that is becoming more and more popular, definitely offers many advantages. It is a foil free color application in which your stylist hand paints your highlights. Picking up layers and “sweeping” the color on different sections of the hair allows the stylist to move more quickly and efficiently while picking the proper placement for the color. It focuses more on the base of the hair shaft rather than concentrating on the root area. Thicker sections will lead to a more bold highlight while smaller will do the opposite.

Update Your Look With New Bangs

-5

Want to change up your look without having to sacrifice you length? Adding fringe is a great way to do that. Fringe or bangs add so much versatility to a cut and can completely change your style while maintaining your long locks. Fringe comes in all different shapes and sizes to fit your face shape and facial features. Be sure to discuss this with your stylist as they may have some insight on what would best suit you.

-7

The straight across fringe is an all time favorite. Celebrities like Rachel Bilson are wearing this look a lot. Heavy fringe that covers or just meets the eyebrow is a great way to camouflage a big forehead. I love this look with straight or curly hair, long or short. This kind of fringe is best on those who have oval or oblong shaped faces. The sleek fringe adds a playfulness to any look. It is stylish and adorable. But be aware that these bangs are not for those of you who don’t have time for maintenance. This trendy look grows out rather quickly and can leave you with hair in your eyes. Many stylist will offer a complimentary bang trim in between haircuts. Don’t be shy and feel free to ask your stylist about their bang trim policy.

choppybang_thumb

For smaller foreheads, try an edgier look with very texturized and uneven fringe. I especially like this look with bob length hair. With the edginess of the fringe, the bob maintains an easy and feminine look that is still suitable for everyday wear. There are also many different variations to this look. Have fun with it. But again, make sure you discuss with your stylist what will be most accommodating to your face.

-5

Of course there is the ever popular, side swept fringe (see the first picture). This one suits just about everyone. Leave them long to blend with the layers around your face, shorter for a disconnected look or add a little flip to the end (think modern day Farrah Fawcett) for a wavy to curly hair style. These tend to be the most popular due to the fact that they are the easiest to maintain and look good on 99.9% of people.

-6

Guys, don’t feel left out. You too can have fringe. Men with fringe were a hot look this year on the runway. Heavy bangs with the longer styles are probably my favorite, but short, clean cut fringe is an awesome look for those that need to maintain a more professional look.

Step outside of the one length box and try adding some fringe. And remember to ask your stylist about in between haircut fringe trims.

Wedding Hair Trends for Spring

It’s that time of year again. Love is in the air and wedding bells are ringing. Don’t be the bride that looks back on her photos 5 years from now and says “What was I thinking when I got my hair done?!” I say this because it happened to my cousin not too long ago. Of course you want to stay trendy, but don’t go overboard. Ladies – less is more! Luckily, the trends this year are classic, sophisticated and if done properly, they are timeless.

-1

The birdcage veil – I love this look. It is simple, classic, understated and what is in right now. I wore one at my wedding a few months ago. They come in all different lengths. Some with rhinestones, feathers, flowers or nothing at all. These veils are more playful and stylish. I prefer these to traditional veils as they don’t hide the face as much, if at all. They are also easy to make. A great way to add your own touch to your special day. Just attach the netting to a comb with a little fishing line and add as much or as little sparkle as you want.

-3

If any of you saw the Sex and The City movie a few years ago, you definitely know what is next on my list – The feathered hair piece. Carrie Bradshaw’s teal, bird head piece was a dramatic version that went well with her couture gown. There are definitely more simplified versions of this look that may better suit your style. I personally love the drama and the color that you can add with these feathers. Just remember to wear something that you are comfortable in and won’t mind seeing in pictures years from now.

-2

If you’ve got a lot going on with your dress or simply prefer a more sleek look, try a side bun. If you wear side bangs, pull your hair to the opposite side in which you comb them. Loose, low buns are always in style and even more so now. Celebrities are wearing their hair like this on red carpets everywhere.

Spring Fashion Trends

spring2008_scarves

This Spring it is all about color. Vibrant jewel tones are always popular in Spring, and this year is no different. Along with the bright and bold colors, safe neutrals are also making a statement. Don’t forget you can utilize the colors in more than just your wardrobe as well. Try combining the two with neutral eyes and a bright, shocking lip color for the full effect or brightening up an outfit with a scarf or big bracelets.

HBZ0109RB003-de-60211721

I’m also loving the hair trends that were recently seen on the runways. Tons of braids, sleek pony tails and buns, even styles that combine sleek and teased hair were the looks that complimented the different textures and colors of the season. Slightly less dramatic versions of these looks are easily duplicated and great for everyday wear. Scarves and big bows (Lady GaGa inspired?) were not only worn around the neck but in the hair, adding some color around the face to bring out the eyes or compliment the makeup.

Hair_Texture1

Grey, taupe, beige and rose colors are all pleasing tones that can be worn by most anyone. These are great daytime colors for the more conservative crowd that wants to stay in sync with the trends while the bolder colors can be saved for those who are a bit more daring. Purples have been growing in popularity in recent years. This year, you are seeing brighter purples that tend to have more red than blue. Also tons of teals and emerald greens. On the lips, go for a tomato red/orange with a blush to compliment, while keeping the eyes neutral with peach or flesh tones.

Finish off any look with a few big bracelets. Try wearing a few silver and wood bangles together and you will be runway ready!

Looking Good While Getting In Shape

-1

So it’s mid February already and hopefully not all of you have given up on your New Year’s resolutions yet. For many, I’m sure getting in shape was at the top of your list and finding time to get to the gym can be difficult. The best thing to do is maximize your time while you are there. To do this, start by making yourself feel good about how you look when going to the gym. This may sound ridiculous, but I am a firm believer that you will work harder when you aren’t worried about looking frumpy or just plain unattractive. I’m not saying it’s a fashion show, but the right gym clothes, hair and makeup will make all the difference.

For starters, wear clothes that fit and compliment your shape. An oversized t-shirt can actually make you look heavier rather than camouflaging your belly. Try a more fitted shirt that gives definition to your waist. Also feel free to play with colors. Try and find something in a color that compliments your skin tone. As far as pants go, I would keep the colors simple – black, grey and darker colors generally work best on the bottom. But don’t forget to wear a pair that is in your size. Baggy pants are just as unflattering as an oversized tee. Don’t forget a sports bra either. These are so important and can make all the difference in the world. A comfy, well fitted sports bra will help keep your focus on your workout and not how many people are watching your “bounce.”

-2

As far as makeup is concerned, I like to use the acronym KIS – Keep It Simple. A light foundation is best. Preferably water based to help prevent clogged pores. Oil and sweat are not a pretty combo. I really like to use a tinted foundation, it won’t run and looks natural. You can also wear a little blush. I try not to do too much only because I’m fair and tend to blush all on my own when I work out. Add a little waterproof mascara and you’re ready to go. Ladies, please no smoky eyes at the gym. This is just a little silly.

Whether you have long or short hair, pull it back. If you need a few pins or a head band, go for it. Keep that hair away from your face, especially if you use a lot of product. Sweaty, matted hair is a distraction and not cute to say the least.

Good Luck!!!

Three New Looks for Men this Spring

How many of you guys want to stay a head of the trends with your hair but also need to keep a professional look for work? Have no fear, short trendy hair is here. And no, I am not talking about a fauxhawk. Here are some of my faves from this Spring’s Fashion Week.

32

First off, is this slightly longer in the front look. Guys with bangs – I love it! Have your stylist add lots of texture with this look. Slicing out volume will create the different lengths that will allow you to have fun with this cut. Wear it forward and a little messy for a night out or comb it to the side a bit (side parts are back too) for a more business like look. For the mess look try Alterna’s Modeling Clay and for your professional look try a bit of Kevin Murphy’s Sticky Business. Dry your hair in the direction you would like it, apply preferred product and you are out the door.

22

For you guys with a great natural texture to your hair, give this look a try. It works best on men that have a pretty consistent natural curl. This look is awesome and I love that the combed back and clean cut look is back with a bit of variation. Since wavy hair is usually thick hair, this cut will also require quite a bit of texture. Have your stylist leave some of the length on top and keep it clean, short and square in the back. I would choose a moose like Alterna’s Non Aerosol Moose for this look. Apply to damp hair and dry away from your face.

31

This last look is great for the guys with fine, straight hair. The blunt bangs in front is a look that we haven’t seen too much for men lately. Simple to style and simple to ask for. Clean cut and low maintenance. Professional and trendy. This look will compliment a business suit as well as a t-shirt and jeans. Little to no product required!

These looks are straight off the runway guys- Get them while they are hot!!!

Spring Hair Care Tips

-1

As winter comes to a close in the next month and Spring graces us with it’s presence on March 20, there are a few things that need to be done to keep our hair looking good. Because as the weather changes, so do our hair care needs. While the harsh cold of the winter required extra conditioning and maybe even less styling due to the need to cover up in order to keep warm, spring presents new challenges – wind, rain, humidity and warmer temperatures.

The wind and humidity can be a tragic combination for hair if proper precautions are not taken. Frizz and split ends will run a muck, leaving a not so attractive look. You can combat this with just a few easy steps and products. For naturally curly or wavy hair, a little Moroccan Oil will go a long way. Apply to dry hair to smooth down the cuticle and fight the frizz and serve as an anti-humectant. It also aids in the prevention of split ends. For straight hair, where you don’t have to worry about frizz as much as split ends, use a leave in conditioner/thermal protector like Kevin Murphy’s Damage Manager. This is great especially for you flat iron junkies.

tousledwaves

In preparation for the warmer days, you want to be sure to use an essential treatment on your hair. Color treated or highlighted hair will benefit greatly from this. I highly recommend Born Again by Kevin Murphy, with shea butter and Omega 3 and Omega 6 that will absorb right into chemically treated hair and help revitalize as well as prevent any future damage.

For a lot of us, our hair is a bit neglected in the winter. A haircut is another way to not only whip your hair back into shape, but also give you a fresh new look for the new season. Short hair cuts are fun and fashionable in the warmer weather. Play with different versions of the classic bob or add some fringe to give a new twist to your old shape. For longer hair, shorter internal layering will add movement and remove dry, damaged ends.
