The Secret of the American Teenager: They have great hair

I don’t watch a lot of TV but my guilty pleasure is The Secret Life of the American Teenager. There is something about this show that I can’t seem to get enough of!  Every time I watch it I wish I had the girls’ wardrobe and a hair team to make me look this great!  Three of the show’s characters have amazing hair color. Here are some great examples of blond, brown and red color done right.

Grace –Blond
I am tired of the over-processed, solid blond look. Here is a more flattering blond option.  Grace has a darker base of a level 6 (light brown) that gives the blond dimension. There are two different levels of blond in her hair, Level 11 (platinum blond) and a darker level 9 (yellow or honey blond).  The platinum is more prominent, to give hair that overall light blond feel and is broken up by a few light pieces of the darker honey blond.  Foiling with two different blonds and having a darker base makes for a perfect blond.

Amy – Light Brown
Amy is a great example of light brown in this picture.  It is a warm (red brown) level 6.  It is a simple all over color but, at a level 6, it shows a lot more of the red brown tone.  This color, with her skin tone and eye color is very striking and shows why not EVERY woman is a blond!

Madison-Red
Although she is a natural redhead, you too can have this amazing red even if you’re not!    She is considered a copper (red /blond) level 7.  There are many different types of red you can pick from. This one is so great on her because of her skin tone and blue eyes.  Red works really well with blue or green eyes and with a fair skin tone. Don’t rule out being a redhead, it is a great option for a lot of girls!

Tired of your basic over-processed blond or dull brown color? Maybe feeling like a dramatic change and want to go red? Take a cue from these beautiful stars, and make your appointment at Emerson today!

Christina Aguilera: New Life, New Music

christina-header

On June 8th, Christina Aguilera will release her newest studio album, Bionic, which she says is a reflection of her life changes over the last 4 years. She has already released her single, “Not Myself Tonight,” to great reception on the radio and iTunes. The Grammy award winner also recently became a new wife and mommy in addition to working on a new movie with Cher called, “Burlesque.”

Christina is a style maven who has tried many haircuts, extensions and even darker hair color in the past. She recently took her signature bright blond locks into a shorter blunt bob haircut with added texture. This classic look is fun and can be modernized depending on styling product or techniques. Christina does have a short texturized bang added to the haircut but it can be easily hidden when parted to the side with a heavier type of pomade. Try using Sheer Pomade by Alterna or Hair Shaper by Fudge.

christianaguilerachinlengthbob

This style of haircut needs to be maintained once every 2 months to keep the precision of the perimeter and texture. This haircut is somewhat different to the inverted style that Victoria Beckham made popular a few years back. The perimeter is even all the way around the head shape instead of gradually getting longer towards the face. Also, Christina’s haircut is emphasized in that the weight is allowed to hang at the perimeter and any texture is created on the top of the haircut. This gives it a more “piece-y” feel. This hairstyle looks good on square, rectangle, oval, or heart shaped faces as it creates horizontal volume around the face shape.

When wet-dry styling this cut on wavier textures, try using Radiant Smoothing Lotion by Alterna for shine and smoothing on this haircut. On straighter textures, try using Anti Gravity by Kevin Murphy for control and volume.

Hint: When blow drying a bob hairstyle- use a paddle brush or denman brush to encourage the hair’s natural fall into the haircut. These brushes are flat or have a slight bevel and provide minimal tension on the hair. Round brushes tend to alter how hair lays and can de-emphasize the quality of the haircut.

We look forward to Christina’s entire album and are just as excited to see what inspiring looks she dons in her videos and concerts!

Alice In Wonderland Returns to the Theater

Coming this March, Tim Burton’s newest interpretation of the classing tale Alice In Wonderland will be hitting theaters and IMAXs all over the country. Some of the talented cast that Tim Burton has gathered for this film include Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Sheen, Crispin Glover, and Anne Hathaway.

Star studded cast aside, the central character Alice is played by Mia Wasikowa who is an Australian actress an relatively unknown in the US. She did recently star in Amelia and Defiance. Mia is currently slated for a future production of a Jane Eyre remake as well as an untitled Gus Van Sant film.

As Alice, Mia has gorgeous blond wavy hair that is young and fresh. It looks like they did a subtle foil highlight on her hair in order to catch the light and emphasis movement. To recreate Mia’s soft wave we recommend towel drying hair after shampooing/conditioning. Then, slightly mist the hair with Moroccan Oil Glimmer Shine before you pin curl the entire head, 2″ from the root. This means rolling up 1-2″ sections of hair and clipping them (you can use bobby pins) before air drying or spending 30 minutes under a hood dryer. Once dry, finger separate and spray with Working Spray by Alterna. (For heavier hair textures try loosely iron curling after pincurls to define wave.)

At the UK premiere of Alice in Wonderland, Mia debuted her new cropped do. Undoubtedly she was tired of caring for those classic long locks from the movie and wanted a simpler and much easier to maintain look. Here we see her in a recent issue of Teen Vogue. This look is fun and modern yet still sweet and feminine. It reminds me of Carey Mulligan’s new haircut (from An Education). What do you think?

Taylor Swift from Curly to Straight Hair

Hollywood stars are notorious for their overnight makeovers and the latest transformation to be making the rounds is Taylor Swift’s dramatic switch from long wavy hair to sleek straight strands.

She definitely surprised everyone this week by ditching the trademark curls. I think her new straight hair looks great. What do you think?

Study: Blondes Spend More Time Getting Ready Than Brunettes

Researchers found that blondes will take 72 minutes a day on their beauty routine compared to 66 minutes for brunettes. This equates to blondes spending 22 days a year getting ready, compared to 19 for brunettes. (Telegraph)

So I guess Blondes do have more fun! How long do you take getting ready in the morning?

Strawberry Fields Foever

Our fashion conscious client, Julia Evanovich, is a costume designer who works with a lot of local theatres and designed clothes for 2 of our models for our Anniversary party next week.

She was transformed from a medium auburn brunette into a strawberry blond
through a bleach and tone service:

This service can cause a lot of damage so D’Arcy used the Kevin Murphy Born Again Treatment conditioner to restore some of the moisture to the hair that was lost. Then D’Arcy trimmed Julia’s hair to make it into more of a bob and then textured her top layer in back to give it softness and bounce.

The bangs were trimmed (once dry) and the bulk on the sides was eliminated with texturizing shears and shears.

Isn’t it beautiful on her? We think so!

Blonde Hair Color Questions

“Is it true blonds can’t color their hair or it will turn green?”

Whether you are a natural blond, have blond foils, or are all over blond, you must seek professional hair coloring care in order to correctly alter a blond to a darker color. If you are only deepening the hair by 1-3 levels, the process is quite simple as a hairstylist will choose a hue that will offset the porosity, warmth/coolness and lightness of the hair. If you are choosing to go significantly darker (permanently) it is called, color correction.

Each salon has its own pricing for color correction and it might seem pricey but if you skip steps you might compromise the integrity of your hair and its color. Trying to correct you hair at home could cause more mistakes in the color and end up being twice as expensive to get fixed. The perfect level of warmth must be chosen first to gradually bring the color down without turning it green. This is called repigmentization. Sometimes this must be done twice if the hair is over processed and porous. Then another final tint is applied and the color is permanent. Your stylist will recommend the proper products for your hair type. If you hair is overly porous the color might fade a level within a month because of the damage on the hair. If this happens, book a demipermanent color to refresh the hue after 6-8weeks.

“Can brown hair go blond without bleach?”

This depends on how dark the natural brown is and the desired hue of blond. If you are a medium brown naturally, yes, it is possible to get to a light to medium blond.

Remember:
Tint does not lift tint. This means if your hair is colored brown it is not possible to go blond without bleach.

A haircare professional will be able to consult with you to determine what process is appropriate and whether the health of you hair can stand it. Each hair case is different and haircoloring can be a complex chemical process, so utilize your stylists knowledge in order to get to your end goal.
