Hair by Franz: Jen’s Cut and Color

Jen came in to me the other week and we cut an colored her hair. She had coppery red hair that had faded a lot. Her hair was looking somewhat gold. but we knew we wanted to stay red, just touch up her new growth and re-establish a color on her ends. We decided to go with a light golden copper blond color. We had to wrap her feathers (which you can’t really see in the picture) in tin foil to avoid coloring them.

As for her Cut and Style we kept her length and touched up her layers to just keep everything nice and neat. To style her we used Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity at her roots to add volume to her do and then round-brush curled her ends with Hair.Resort for added hold to the curl. The end result was a soft wave that looks beautifully soft and subtle.

Do you think this look works for you? Have any questions? Feel free to book an appointment with me by calling 206-323-7437 or booking online at Emersonsalon.com or emersonsalon@gmail.com

Kevin.Murphy Cocktail Class

We recently had the privilege of receiving a class from Kevin.Murphy’s educator on how to use its product line in “cocktails.” This term refers to when you take one or more products and put them together on the client’s hair. Each is suited to the particular client’s hair and the desired effect.

The class was attended by some volunteer hair models who got to experience first hand the luxury of using a paraben free, sulfate free line that uses many botanicals and essential oils.

Bronwyn had Body.Guard and Hair.Resort.Spray in her hair. The Body.Guard is a hydrating lotion with functional mica which aids to cut down on blowdry time by 70%. Hair.Resort.Spray is a lighter version of the Hair.Resort gel and is best for light, touchable wave texture. Her hair was blow dry diffused with added flat iron curls on the ends.

Annie had Anti.Gravity and Motion.Lotion in her hair. Anti.Gravity is an oil-free volumizer that is heat-activated and creates movement, light hold, and shine. Motion.Lotion is a frizz reducer and curl enhancer. The straight blowout has hold and fullness simultaneously!

Kate had Motion.Lotion and Body.Builder. Body.Builder, a volumizing mouse, is a newer product that has great shine and aids in volume, fullness, and hold. Her straight blowout eliminated her naturally wavy and dense hair and turned it into a sleek, modern look.

Lee Ann had Anti.Gravity and Hair.Resort gel. Hair.Resort is the cornerstone of the line and aids to create salty beach waves and is great for those that like controlled texture in a bottle. (The best tip we received was that if we needed any product to be stronger that we could add Hair.Resort to any product for more punch.) Her hair was blown out with soft iron curls that were allowed to cool when clipped up. Lee Ann has trouble getting her finer, denser hair to hold style so this cocktail was perfect and lasted all day.

We felt inspired by the different combinations and would love to play around with which cocktail is best suited for you hair. Book a blowout today and discover what Kevin.Murphy can do for you!

3 Ways to Add Volume to Your Hair

Volume can be a hard thing to achieve for those who don’t come by it naturally. I love volume and here are a few tips to getting some extra “oomph” in your do.

The first step to volume can be as simple as the products you are using. Products are some of your best friends! Using Kevin.Murphy Anit.Gravity, an oil-free volumizing agent is a great first step! You can also combine it with other products like Alterna Caviar Volume Shampoo and Conditioner to get more body. The Kevin.Murphy Powder puff is also great to use as a finishing product and to add definition to the texture of the hair.

Blowdrying can help you as well. Volume is mostly created at the root of the strand. When you blowdry your hair, dry it the opposite way you want it to fall. For instance, when you want more volume and you pull your hair back normally, blowdry it forward. the resistance you create will create volume when you pull it back for styling.

Another great way to add extra volume is called back brushing (also known as back combing). This technique requires you to take a comb or brush to a section of hair and comb/brush the hair from ends to scalp. You can then lightly brush over the sections to smooth out the top layer and hide the back combing.

Use these tips and tricks to never leave the house with flat hair again!

Let’s talk about Sex… E hair.

An in-salon blow out will take you to new heights in sexy hair. Come in for a haircut and finish it with an amazing blowout, L.A. style. If you have ever been to L.A. and seen the prices salons there charge for a blow out you will understand how important a blow out is when in the public eye or for an important event or date.

z

Here at Emerson salon we pride ourselves on our long lasting sexy blowouts. Sexy waves are in and wearing hair smooth and full of body at the roots leading into big billowy tresses is key. Super model hair is another way to ask for this blow out. Texture glaze from Alterna supports the style and keeps your blow out frizz free while not weighing it down. Finishing with our Rapid Repair Spray to seal your ends and keep it healthy looking, and smelling great.

Curly Hair Tangles less!

Science
Straight hair tangles twice as much as curly hair, as was proven in a study done by French biophysicist Jean-Baptiste Masson, who devised a geometrical model of hair. His math suggests that straight hairs rub up against each other at steep angles, which causes tangles.

Engineering
Tangles are like burrs, which are also found in nature and they stick to our clothing. The discovery of Velcro occurred when Swiss engineer George de Mestral noticed burrs attached to his wool pants while out on a hunting trip in the Alps.

Physics
Masson’s findings noted that Velcro involves fibers tangling up with each other, much like hair fibers. These findings have been detailed in the Journal of American Physics, and can lead to advances in “Velcro-like technology”, where researchers might attempt to increase the tension of Velcro fibers to make them straighter.

Hair
This correlates to the hairdresser’s blowout of course: When the right amount of tension is applied to the hair, along with a product that detangles in conjunction with another product that attaches to the hair strands, the client will get a smoother, straighter, sleeker hairstyle!

The Perfect Blowout-Curly Hair

What you’ll need:

Start with damp hair. Apply a curl defining cream, like Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion or Alterna Texturizing Glaze. Next, flip your head upside down. You’ll need a diffuser attachment for your blow dryer. Dry your hair on a low setting, by cupping it with the diffuser. Remember not to touch it to much; the oils from your hands can cause frizz.
  • If you feel you need extra hold, you can finish with a soft hold hair spray, like Alterna Flexible Hold. This will keep the definition in your curl all day without making your hair feel crunchy.
  • If you feel you need extra frizz control, you can finish with Kevin Murphy Easy Rider.

The Perfect Blowout- Straight and Smooth

What you’ll need:

Start by applying a smoothing product to towel dried hair. I recommend Body Guard by Kevin Murphy or Alterna Straightening Balm. Then, using a blow dryer, get your hair about 75% dry. Next section your hair horizontally using a butterfly clip to hold it into place. Then, blow dry your hair with a brush back and forth, flat against your head. Follow through to the ends with blow dryer and brush. I highly recommend using a Mason Pearson brush, because of it’s ability to create tension. The tension, along with the right products, is what helps us create smooth and straight hair that lasts. A regular paddle brush will also work O.K. Finish with Alterna Smoothing Lotion or Kevin Murphy Easy Rider to prevent frizz and protect the hair from humidity.
