Hair by Franz: Jer’s La Roux Inspired Haircut

jer

Jer’s haircut was really fun to do. After we consulted we decided that we needed to break away from the normal “shorter on the side longer on top” look that he had been toting for the past few years. We wanted something with a bit more edge, yet something that could be business professional when he went to work. His red hair reminded me of La Roux so we made him a shorter version of her haircut in the form of a faux hawk.

To achieve the look that we desired, we needed it to be much longer on top than it is on the sides. We choppped down his sides and back to a shorter length to accentuate the length on top. we then cut his Faux Hawk origination from the center of his crown to his left eye. This created that La Roux “peak” without the super long hair.

To style his hair we used Kevin.Murphy Body.Builder Voumizing Mouse and Kevin.Murphy Gritty.Business. We sprayed a little of the Body.Builder into my hands and distributed it throughout the top lengths. We the blowdried the hair up and to the left. trying to achieve as much volume as possible. Once the volume and direction was achieved we held and textured the style with Gritty.Business for a bit more of a rocker look with a pliable hold.

How to Get Francis Barber’s Look from Doctor Who

Francis Barber plays as one of the mysterious villains of the BBC show Doctor Who. Little is known of Barber’s character so far, but we know that she can definitely rock her futuristic, femme fatale updo!

doctorwho_s06_e07_18__large

The best way to get this look is to have your hair brushed back towards your crown and the top of your hair. Pin the hair in place and then proceed to spray the hair with Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager to protect the hair from heat. Take your curling iron and, while taking small sections, curl the hair and pin the curls in place to cool. In the front, curl the hair away from your face and let it drop down to cool.

Once the curls have cooled, un-pin them and break up the curls. Take bobby pins and begin to pin the curls down to keep them close to the head. She keeps her hanging curl relatively intact, so I would recommend leaving that alone. Spray with Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray and you’re done!

Think this would be a great look for you? Come into Emerson Salon and book an appointment with me today!

How to Get Alex Kingston’s Hair from Doctor Who

river-song-alex-kingston-3

The actress Alex Kington, most noted for her role on ER, has been an ongoing character on the British television show Doctor Who. As some of you may know, I am a big Doctor Who fan. With the mid-season finale of airing a few weeks ago, revealing many details to the mysterious character, River Song (Alex Kingston), I couldn’t help but talk about some of her hair that has appeared so far.

tumblr_ljvgp7UGU61qat2ico1_500

Kingston is asked to wear many variations to her naturally curly hair. For enhancing curls, I always turn to MoroccanOil and Kevin.Murphy. MoroccanOil Oil Treatment will hydrate her curls and then dried gently with MoroccanOil Curl Enhancer to add hold and define her curls. This combination will help reduce frizz, control curl, and hydrate the hair.

Kingston’s hair throughout the series is always as big as the mysteries she hides throughout the series. To get this volume in your hair gently blow dry it with a diffuser attachment to your blowdryer. This will weaken the flow of air from your dryer thusly reducing stress put on the curls. Use the diffuser to dry the hair upwards to maintain volume.

Use these tips to get your hair ready for adventure!

Emma Stone Goes Back to Red at the MTV Movie Awards

At the MTV movie Awards, Emma Stone showed up with fantastic locks of red hair. After going blonde to be in the new Spiderman movie, she is back to Red. She is not as dark a red as she was for her role in Easy A, but still sported that same red/orange tone.

To replicate the style she sported at the awards turn to MoroccanOil and Kevin.Murphy. I would prep the hair with the MoroccanOil Oil Treatment to condition the hair and help retain your color. Then I would roughly blow dry the hair with Kevin.Murphy Hair.Resort to add texture to the hair. Follow this up with the steps in the video below

How to get Blake Lively’s hair from the Green Lantern

On June 13, the long awaited movie adaptation of the DC comic, Green Lantern, will be in theaters (starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, and Peter Saarsgard.) The film follows a young test pilot who suddenly gains super powers when a green ring is given to him from another world.

With-Ryan-Reynolds-in-Green-Lantern

For this movie, the usually blond Blake Lively (of Gossip Girl) had to darken her hair in order to look more like the comic’s rendition of Carol Ferris. If you would like to attempt this rich, warm, medium chocolate brown after being light blond we recommend the following:

Book a consultation with an Emerson stylist to review pricing, maintenance and product recommendations as having realistic expectations about the service will only aid in the satisfaction with your hair.

If you have been a light blond for awhile and have any amount of damage we recommend a conditioning treatment to prep the hair prior to the service. (Try Born.Again by Kevin Murphy on towel dried hair after shampooing twice a week)

This is considered a “color correction going darker”. This means that due to the lightness of the hair that a first step of staining the hair with a orange or copper color needs to occur before the final color is applied. This aids in stepping down the haircolor in order to prevent unnecessary fadeage or “hollow” color.

This process can take anywhere from 2 -4 hours depending on the hair’s length, condition and density. If the hair is extremely damaged it still might fade even with the right service or support products as damage stays in the hair until it is cut out.

This movie’s special effects and story look literally out of this world- and you can look and feel out of this world if you come on in to Emerson today!

How to get the Hair of Amelia Pond from Doctor Who

I am a huge Sci-fi fan and there is one actress who’s hair I have always loved. From the long running series, Doctor Who, Amelia Pond (Played by Karren Gillan) the Doctor’s time travelling companion. She has as red hair as her attitude.

Her long red hair is a bright copper color that is fitting to appear as a natural red head. Keep in mind that she has an orange-red hair color. Blue-reds and red-reds can be beautiful, but will never look natural. You also need to make sure that if you are lifting your hair from a very dark level, that it will still looking natural. Looking natural is the whole goal.

As for how to style this look, prep the hair with Kevin.Murphy Heated.Defense, a heat protectant and then add Anti.Gravity throughout the mid-length and ends of the hair. Then take your large curling iron and loosely curl the mid-lengths and ends of the hair in large vertical sections and let them hang to cool. Then with your fingers, comb out the sections to create a few large curls.

Hope you enjoy this great look from the minds at the BBC!

Saying Goodbye to Oprah

Oprah’s last season is over and we salute her devotion to true beauty and education here at Emerson Salon. We wish we could give her a going away present as a send off but she has everything! Including a network, O.W.N.!

If we ever had the privilege of doing Oprah’s hair (her stylist Andre does a fantastic job of transforming her daily) we would probably use the MoroccanOil line. We’re sure she would greatly appreciate how the MoroccanOil company contributes to a women’s co-op that cultivated the argan nut for the product line. The dry oil has tons of UV inhibitors to protect color and does not build up on hair like silicone serums you can buy at drugstores.

Oprah likes to wear her hair a number of ways so here are some tips on what to use on African American textured hair:

To straighten: Cocktail the MoroccanOil Oil Treatment with the Hydrating Style Cream. It gives ample moisture for smoothing hair when blowdrying and flat ironing. Moroccan Oil is a treatment line so when using high heat implements it is the perfect way to style and condition simultaneously.

For natural curl: Use the MoroccanOil Intense Curl Cream for ultimate frizz control and moisture when blow dry diffusing.

For added moisture and conditioning: Use MoroccanOil Moisturizing Mask for 10 minutes on towel dried hair once a week. Easy to apply and no major wait time so you can get on with your day.

Thank you Oprah for all your many years of gab, charity and education. You have made us better.

How to Get Madonna’s Vogue Look

I recently came across a great Mashup while on Youtube. It combines Madonna’s Vogue and Ducksauce’s song Barbra Streisand. Her style in the video is reminds us of current trends that have people shaving or pinning their hair on the sides of their head to get that Mohawk look, or just accentuate top volume.

Madonna Vs Duck Sauce – Barbra Streisand Strikes A Pose! (Vogue) Robin Skouteris Mix

To get this style with short hair, use a small curling iron or rollers to set curls in the hair, using Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager to prep the hair. Once the curls have cooled, remove any clips or rollers and use your fingers and a small bit of the Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider to separate and define the curls. Use the Kevin.Murphy Powder.Puff to add any volume you need to the top. Then section out the sides of the hair and brush it back and up towards your crown and pin in place with bobby pins, being sure to hide them within the hair.

Here is How to Get PenĂ©lope Cruz’s Style

penelope-cruz
Have you managed to get to the theaters and see the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie? If you haven’t I recommend it! If not for the wacky, witty antics of Johnny Depp as Capt. Jack Sparrow, go for the sultry looks of PenĂ©lope Cruz. She plays Angelica, the daughter of the infamous pirate Black Beard.

alg_penelope_cruz2

Cruz was recently shown on the cover of Vogue Magazine with a messy braid. To get this style, first wash your hair with Alterna Caviar Volume Shampoo and Conditioner. Then I would use the Kevin.Murphy Motion.Lotion in conjunction with Kevin.Murphy Hair.Resort to style the hair. The Motion.Lotion will help enhance curl and fight frizz while the Hair.Resort will help give you that beach texture. Apply the products after towel drying your hair. then lightly blow dry using the Kevin.Murphy Texture.Comb, twisting the hair towards the nape. Then braid a standard braid very low on the head and tie it off with a small clear band.

Zoe Saldana’s Stunning Hair At The Cannes Festival & How To Get It!

zoe saldana Cannes

Zoe Saldana was recently in Cannes Festival for The Tree Of Life premiere wearing a red & white dress by Giorgio Armani.

To style your hair like Zoe, first wash your hair with the Alterna Bamboo Shine Shampoo and Conditioner. These with give your hair that soft sleek and shiny look and feel for the red carpet. I would then prep the towel dried hair with MorrocanOil Oil Treatment. Once the hair is completely dried, spray the hair with Kevin.Murphy Heated.Defense before pulling out your curling iron, this will protect the hair from the iron by acting as a buffer for the heat, while still allowing you to curl the hair.

Start curling by grabbing sections of hair starting where your fringe lays. With these sections of hair, curl them by holding the iron vertically and curl away from the face on the lower lengths of the hair. When removing the hair from the iron, hold it up with your palm and let it cool slightly before letting it drop. Continue with this pattern all the way around the head. Finish your style with a quick spray of Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray and Viola! You’re ready for the Red Carpet!

Zoe Saldana be seen this fall in the upcoming film the Colombiana.
