D’Arcy Takes the Stage

Emerson Salon loves to support and contribute back to our community and as a part of this effort, one of our stylists (D’Arcy Harrison) will be performing in a charity benefit staged reading of the Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler.

As some of you know, D’Arcy started off as a “theatre brat” before starting her hair career and welcomes the opportunity to apply her talent for a great cause! In addition to performing, Emerson Salon is donating 2 haircuts (with D’Arcy) and a product package for the silent auction.

This event will benefit two charities:

  • Children of the Night, ” a privately funded non profit organization established in 1979 for the rescue of children from child prostitution.” (www.childrenofthenight.org).
  • Refugee Women’s Alliance “a nonprofit, multi-ethnic organization that promotes inclusion, independence, personal leadership and strong communities by providing refugee and immigrant women and families with culturally and linguistically appropriate services. ReWA advocates for social justice, public policy changes, and equal access to services while respecting cultural values and the right to self determination.”(www.rewa.org)

While creating the Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler took many interviews with women about how they felt about their private anatomy and their individual experiences regarding the topic. She then turned the interviews into monologues that became a huge hit Off Broadway when she performed them in a one woman show. Now, the play is performed all over the world to help support women’s causes and nonprofits.

This is part of a national event called V-day and will be held Feb 14th and 20th at 7pm at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle. The address is 4408 Delridge Way SW. For tickets go to: www.brownpapertickets.com. More info here.

I look forward to seeing you there!!!!

Neighborhood Business Updates

Here are just a few updates on the changing scene of Capitol Hill:

QjnLdkrfO1sEO1dj7GhrZjnBeq4-large

New photo’s were featured on the Capitol Hill Blog of the soon to open Elliot Bay Books which will be on 10th between Pike and Pine (across from Rancho Bravo). The space looks amazing with huge ceilings and some great exposed beams. I can’t wait to see the finished product. You can get the full update on the CHS blog.

Another Pioneer Square business is rumored to be making the move to Cap Hill, with Pioneer Square Video eying a spot on Pine st across from 611 supreme.  More here at CHS.

Everyday Music will be moving onto 10th between Pike and Pine with Elliot Bay Books and a new art supply store is in the works for Everyday Music’s current space at Pine and Broadway.  More at CHS.  This article also confirmed that the new Elliot Bay Books will include a cafe.

Cap Hill Seattle got photos of the new Sonic Boom Records and Velouria clothing store on Melrose between Pike and Pine.

Seattle PI ran an article about a tour they took of the new Packard building with lots of pictures.  Looks like it will mostly include brand new luxury apartments, but rumor has it that it will also be home to a new permanent Skillet restaurant which would be fantastic and at 12th and Pine more than close enough for mid day lunch breaks!

The Lobby Bar opened across the street from us and look awesome.  Check out their website for more details.

PoDogs has become a new favorite for our current lunch run’s and with their all-day happy hour on Sundays, who can resist?

Part of what we love about this neighborhood is how dynamic it is with so many people working hard to make it better.  What other changes have you spotted in the works on Capitol Hill?

Pacific Northwest Ballet presents Nutcracker

The holiday season just isn’t the same without all the trappings of Christmas, such as pop-rock holiday music, mad rushes at the mall, and gingerbread lattes, but one absolute must every holiday season is the annual showing of the Nutcracker by the Pacific Northwest Ballet. This production of Hoffman’s classic tale includes some impressive dancing, massive sets, and one giant mouse king. Easily PNB’s most iconic performance, if there is one ballet you attend, this is the one you should see.

The Nutcracker’s season began on Nov 27th and will run through December 30th. If you are looking for something a little different, the Dec 30th performance is what they call the “Nutty Nutcracker” performance where the cast gets to let off a little steam and have fun with there own version of the tale. Tickets and more info is available on the PNB website.

New Development – 11th and Pike Up for Review

A new design released for the proposed 11th and Pine residential development. The now long vacant space across from Velo Bike Shop is about to be re-invented a large mixed-use called the Sunset Electric Building with 92 residential units, ground floor retail, and a rooftop P-Patch. Justin at Capitol Hill Blog has a great run down of the highlights including a proposal by the developer to shift from studios to 1 bedroom apartments and to replaced proposed art’s and performance space with more parking. It will be interesting to see how the project is reviewed. I have to say I am very intrigued by the roof top garden component. What do you think?
