Among the highlights for most, MGMT, the Dead Weather, Blue Scholars, Atmosphere, Holy F**k, Mad Rad, !!! and so much more. Below are some photographic highlights. For these pictures and hundreds more, go check out the Capitol Hill Block Party 2010 photostream on Flickr.

Capitol Hill Block Party!

The Capitol Hill Block Party is always an eagerly awaited event, and this year’s party promises to be bigger and better than ever. There are some huge headliners that tend to inspire statements like “OMG! Are you kidding me!?!” from my friends, like New York band MGMT, hip hop group Atmosphere, and Jack White project The Dead Weather. There are also some lesser-known local bands that will no doubt round out this already impressive line-up.

The Blue Scholars (playing on the mainstage on Sunday evening) are a Seattle hip-hop group made up of DJ Sabzi and MC Geologic. The two met at the University of Washington in 2002, and since have exploded on the hip-hip scene, playing at Sasquatch and Rock the Bells, and opening for Kanye West at Bumbershoot in 2006. Their music is a poignant and engrossing blend of catchy beats and pertinent social and political messages. ““So many people are in their own fishbowl, thinking they know what the world is, but never get the opportunity to see anything beyond their immediate environment,” says Sabzi. “We’ve been fortunate to have had the opportunity to establish real human connections with people we’ve discovered aren’t really any different from us, because music has broken down the superficial barriers that would otherwise keep us apart.”

Head Like A Kite is playing at Nuemos on Friday, and the show should be a great one. The Seattle band’s music is made up of irresistible dance beats, “bombastic drums and live instruments glitched and deconstructed around swirling pop melodies.” They are renowned for their theatrical shows; replete with fog machines, stuffed animals thrown from the stage, and elaborately designed sets. How can you miss this? It’s impossible for it not to be a party.

The Redwood Plan’s website states, “We are a party, and you’re invited.” Go to their performance on the main stage on Saturday afternoon to see what it’s all about. They have been named “one of Seattle’s newest and greatest dance punk bands” by the Stranger, and have racked up similar praise throughout the Northwest.

There’s still time to book your appointment at Emerson Salon this weekend and get a free ticket to a day of your choosing! There’s going to be tons of food, vendors, and activities; this is definitely something you don’t want to miss! Give us a call to set up an appointment today, and we’ll see you out there!

Upcoming Concerts: Frightened Rabbit at Neumos 5/16

frightened-rabbit2

Frightened Rabbit is coming back to Seattle and we can’t be more excited. Their latest album, The Winter of Mixed Drinks, is a another great record fro these Scottish Talents. Below we post the video for their single “Swim Until You Can’t See Land,” a fantastic song that is catchy, laid back, and generally enjoyable to listen to. We recommend checking out their previous work on the Midnight Organ album which was equally good and coming to Neumos prepared for a great show. More details on the show can be found at the Neumos website.

Upcoming Concert: Shout Out Louds at Neumos on 5/15

shout-out-louds

Hailing from Stockholm, this is not your usual Swedish pop band. The Shout Out Louds produce music that is both extremely pleasing to listen to and also nostalgic and thoughtful. This is music for Sunday mornings and lonely drives across beautiful landscapes. The Shout Out Louds are touring to promote their latest album, Work, which was recorded here in the “salty city of Seattle” and features lead single “Fall Hard.” The new music take the band in a bit of a different direction, but the simpler arrangements work well for them. They will be at Neumos on Saturday May 15th and you know we will be there. More details on the Neumos website.

Upcoming Concert: Beach House at Neumos 4/12

beach-house

Beach House is a hard band to describe beyond the obvious praise that comes from the mouth of anyone who listens to them. But what are they? How you you explain Beach House to the uninitiated? AllMusic.com describes their work as “dark, dreamy, and alluringly hypnotic” and I think this gets you part of the way there. Beach House is like the soundtrack to your dream, that deep, inexplicable moment where you find yourself immersed in what is not quite a nightmare, but hardly happy or carefree. Rather than try to explain it further, watch the Beach House video below from a performance they did of their song “Norway.” They will be at Neumos on Monday, April 12th, more details on the Neumo’s website.

Upcoming Concert: The Big Pink at Neumos 3/12

the_big_pink

Looking for a great night out? Consider checking out the Scottish indie rock band known as The Big Pink who will be playing at Neumos on Friday 3/12. We at Emerson Salon have a soft spot for any band that traces its roots to the UK (ie Glasvegas, Frightened Rabbit, and Snow Patrol) and the Big Pink fits nicely into that bucket. With two London natives, Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell, the band has a great sound that is both incredibly catchy and still reminiscent of shoegaze. In any event, the Big Pink is sure to put on a fantastic show. Check out more details on the Neumos’ website and watch the video for The Big Pink’s song Domino’s below. See you there!

Little Boots: Stuck on Repeat

little-boots_1217885c

We have seen many strong female pop artists emerge in the last few years including Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding, Peaches and Little Boots. Little Boots is an electro pop star from the U. K. and her newest album, Hands, drops on March 2 in the US. Soon, she will be touring all over the US and Canada playing shows and promoting this fun, effervescent album. She will even be playing Neumos in Seattle on Saturday, March 6th!

Last year, Little Boots became known for her song, Stuck On Repeat, with its unique hook and surveillance style video.

In this video Little Boots has a European hipster style with a black/brown colored long bob. To achieve this look:

  • For color, consult with your Emerson Stylist to determine the perfect shade of dark brown for you. To make this decision, it is important to share with your stylist your if you intend to keep this color long term. Sometimes if you are going significantly darker, you might want to try a temporary version of this hue to avoid costly color corrections in the future. If you are starting out blond, going this dark will require a repigmentizing session (replacement of warmth/depth to hair) before the final application of color.
  • The Cut: This is a longer version of an inverted bob. To achieve this perimeter in the back, cut the line just below the curve of the neck into the shoulders. Then, create the inversion by over directing the sides towards the initial cut. You can customize this style to a side part or create balance and versatility by cutting while parted in the middle. This is also called cutting with the “natural fall”. After creating the perimeter, the layers in back will be concave where weight is removed from the top and shifted towards the bottom. In addition, it seems there was removal of interior weight through texturizing/thinning within vertical sections in the back. Chunky texture is created on a soft diagonal on the top side layers by slithering or slide cutting. Once styled, a textured swoop bang is carved by following a diagonal line from the midforehead towards the temple.
  • The Style: Once towel dried after shampooing and conditioning- apply Volume Sculpting Creme by Alterna Caviar to create a more voluminous but pliable style. Rough dry the hair 80% and then take a large round brush to bevel the under and top layers. Apply some Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy to the ends and aggressively “tousle” the back and the interior of the sides for a messy quality. Spray small spurts of Firm Hold Spray by Alterna Caviar on the interior and bangs (after cutting) to create a soft, full finish.

Ironically, Little Boots decided to completely alter her hair color and style with her newest video for Earthquake. She now looks very similar to Lady Gaga with bleached platinum hair. The hairstyle seen in this video is highly sculpted and coiffed into a more modern version of a blond Princess Leia! Check it out!

Want the hair color and/or hairstyle in this video? Here’s just a tad of what it entails:

  • Bleach and Tone/Color Correction Service: Getting the exact shade of lightest blond can be very challenging when starting with all over dark hair. It also can be damaging if not done correctly. All previous color history should be shared with your stylist in order to avoid loss of length through excessive breakage. It is difficult to guarantee a specific shade in color correction so be open to creating this look in 2-3 sessions with your stylist.
  • Styling: Put your hair in slightly asymmetrical pigtails and style away! Some products that could be used to achieve this style are Hair Shaper by Fudge (for sleekness and sculpting), Hemp Spray Shine, Working Spray by Alterna (first), and lastly Session Spray by Kevin Murphy for extreme hold.
  • HINT: If you have trouble getting all the pieces smooth without flyways, try using a medium heat curling iron to set the hair in place once pinned and sprayed with Working Spray. Have fun! Add hairpiece jewelry like Little Boots and push the envelope! Being brave with your hair sets you apart from the crowd!

Tegan And Sara Play Portland

539w

The identical twin Canadian rock star sisters known as Tegan and Sara have been a staple on many indie rocker’s playlists and now they are back with a new slate of killer songs in their sixth album, Sainthood. To help with promoting Sainthood, Tegan and Sara are coming to the Pacific Northwest and will be playing a show at the Keller Auditorium in Portland, OR on April 8, 2010.

In this picture, the sisters show off their new haircuts. Their former Joan Jett-esque fashion mullets are gone and have been replaced with two different looks. Tegan is rocking an edgy, asymmetrical mullet. Longer in the middle and through the back, down to one side, and cropped pretty short on the sides. To achieve this look, you will require a lot of texture, product and some flat ironing. I would probably choose to use Kevin Murphy’s Straight Defence and Alterna’s Styling Mud. For thicker hair, you can use a bit of Alterna’s Texturizing Glaze. Sarah’s new look is a bit more conservative, yet still stylish. Her look requires a strong side part, long sweeping fringe (bangs) and a slight a-line shape. I would also use Straight Defence and finish off the look with a flat iron and a bit of Texturizing Glaze.

Check out the trendy and talented twin’s new video for Hell, the lead single off of Sainthood!

Concert Update – Zero 7 at Showbox on 12/12

Zero 7, the downbeat electronic indie band, is coming to Seattle to put on another show. While they have been long acclaimed they have struggled to live up to their past glory they received on their first album Simple Things. All the same they have made some great tracks and one of their best is the song Destiny (video below), hopefully their set will include some of these classics. More details of the show can be found here on the Showbox website.

Concert Update – Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeroes at Neumos on 12/09

We can’t help it, we just can’t get the ridiculously sticky song Home (music video below) out of our heads. There is something altogether appealing about this simple and easy song, even if AllMusic.com repeatedly call the band “cultish”. Regardless, this is sure to be an interesting show and have some excellent music. More details on the show are at the Neumos website. Check out the video for their song “Home”.
