Get Ready to “Walk the Moon”

A new band on the scene is Walk the Moon. I soon became entranced by them after being shown the Music video for their song “Anna Sun” from their album, “I Want! I Want!”. Check out the music video below!

The lead singer, Nicholas Petricca, in the video has longer hair that is naturally wavy. Textured hair (meaning wavy or curly) is making a great resurgence and can be a beautiful look to pull off for men. Unfortunately, curls and waves can easily become frizzy or flat without some good old TLC. A great way to do that is with using great products and getting a great cut! Here is a way for you to achieve this look for yourself and learn how to perserve your curls!

If you watch the video, you can see that he has a very flattering haircut for his face shape (there is a great shot at 2:45). It is longer and left slightly curly/wavy to give him a more youthful appearance, and the cut adds more roundness to the shape, evening out his more square face shape. Make sure you talk to your stylist about how you style your hair, since whether it is left curly or made straight or even if you style it both ways can influence the design of your haircut.

To style your hair, I would recommend using the Alterna Bamboo Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner. Once you’re out of the shower, dry your hair by lightly squeezing the hair, rather than roughly drying it. Doing that can help you preserve the shape of your natural curl which we can enhance and further perserve with wonderful products. I would recommend using a small amount of the Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider to prevent frizz and give it definition. Try to apply it on the hair, not through the curls (unless you want to break them up a bit). Then you can let it air dry as you go on with your day!

Ask a Stylist-Growing Out Short Cuts

Kat asks:

“About a year ago, in what was either a moment of creative genius or temporary insanity, I took a pair of scissors to my long curly hair and lopped it all off (al la Jean Seberg). The result was remarkably successful, and I’ve been loving the look for a while, but I’m definitely ready to start growing my hair back out. This is easier said than done- I have thick, dark, curly hair that is generally at its best very long, or so short that the curl doesn’t exist. My childhood photos are full of painful, mushroom-shaped examples of what I’m afraid is in store for me now. Any tips on how to survive the era of ill-mannered grow-out hair before me?”

Wow Kat, good for you!! Here’s what our stylists thought:

Lancer says:

“Congratulations on your DIY cut! I suggest making an appointment for a consultation so that your stylist can see your hair in person and determine what service you need for now. If it hasn’t been cut in a very long time, a deep conditioning treatment can do wonders in reviving your hair’s moisture balance as well as helping your grown out ends look better.

I have worked with many clients who are growing their hair out. Sometimes they need their layers reshaped so that the hair doesn’t stick out from the head in a triangular shape. Other times their hair just needs trimmed or texturized in the meantime.

Good luck with your decision and patience is key to growing out curly hair!”

Ellen says:

“Growing out your hair from such an extreme is hard for anyone, but to make matters worse you are dealing with thick curly hair! My suggestion would be to use Morrocon Oil Intense Curl Cream to hydrate and control the curl. To manage the ugly grow out process come in and get it routinely cut. Since you have thick hair it needs to be textured to lay better and to make your life easier while growing it out. Routine trimming will help it have a shape other then the dreaded mushroom top!”

Rusty says:

“I would consider your spontaneity to be a stroke of genius. Unfortunately, strokes of genius can have their setbacks. Growing your hair will be challenging. And yes, you’re going to have those stages where you’d rather pull it out than grow it out, but be very patient. This is an issue that time will definitely cure. Ask a Stylist-Chemical Straightening

Arianna asked our stylists:

“I have really curly hair and I am thinking about getting it permanently straightened for awhile. What are the risks of doing this? Will it wreck my hair? What else should I know before going ahead with it?”

Good question Arianna! Here’s what our stylists have to say.

Lancer says,

“Permanent hair straightening will change your hair texture completely. The only way to remove it is to have the straightened lengths of your hair cut off. A better option for you would be the Keratin Smoothing treatment. This treatment can be varied to give a less-than-permanent smoothness to your hair. If you choose this route, you will still have to flat iron your hair to get it completely straight.

Hair that has been chemically altered needs special care. You must use professional hair care products that your stylist recommends for your at-home maintenance. Otherwise, your service that you paid for cannot be guaranteed, and straightened hair (whether done with a straightening, smoothing, and.or flat ironing treatment) is very different hair and needs extra care.

Potential risks include breakage if the treatment isn’t done correctly. Seek out a salon that does these treatments on a regular basis and ask about a stylist’s certification and credentials first. Also, if your hair is currently colored, permed, highlighted, or bleached, it may have too poor of porosity to accept another chemical treatment, though professional straightening treatments are available for those hair types.

Finally, the treatment is a bit costly and time-intensive. Do your research, have a thorough consultation with your stylist before proceeding, and then you can decide if it is right for you!”

American Idol’s Best Hairstyles of 2010

Over the years, many American Idol contestants have pushed the envelope when it comes to their hairstyles. From trend setters like Kelly Clarkson and her “chunky highlights” to Sanjaya and his ridiculous mohawk and even Adam Lambert with his slick and shiny emo do. However, this year’s top 12 contestants seem to be a bit more tame when it comes to their lovely locks.

Siobhan Magnus, is adorable with her edgy take on the bob. Ask your stylist for a layered, a-line bob with fringe that just hits the eyebrow. For her color, ask for a rich brown with slices of highlights or a technique known as balayage. The awesome thing about this look is that it looks adorable with different hair accessories and can also be worn curly.

Didi Benami keeps her look fresh and feminine with soft curls and golden blonde highlights. Her long layers and subtle color gives her a very fresh and natural look. Ask for face framing layers and a deep side part. Style with a round brush and big barrel curling iron on the ends – curling away from the face.

As for the boys, nothing too out of the ordinary there either. Though I must say that Casey James has beautiful hair. Hair that I would love to have. His sunkissed hightlights and soft wave that are au naturale is the look that tons of women pay big bucks for. I just wish he would leave it down more often.

Product of the Week: Moroccan Oil

Moroccan Oil! This stuff is amazing! In fact the whole line works wonders. We can’t seem to keep this stuff on the shelves. Mainly because it is such a versatile product.

I absolutely love the Moroccan Oil Treatment for all hair types. And yes, you can literally use it for all hair types. Curly, straight, dry, thick, fine-this product is awesome. It moisturizes, protects from UV damage, conditions, helps smooth frizz, reduces flyaways, and smells great. All without leaving a heavy residue like a lot of other shine products.

Apply to damp hair before styling to minimize the frizz and protect from the blow dryer, or add a bit to dry hair to smooth, moisturize and fight flyaways. If you’re still not totally sold on this, we carry a small bottle for starters. You will be hooked!

Preparing Your Hair For Seattle’s "Monsoon" Weather

The weather forecast is predicting more rain this week in Seattle and this may spell trouble for your coif.

Frizz, “poofiness,” and lack of manageability may be caused by humidity in the air. To conquer this, use Moroccan Oil!

At Emerson Salon we now carry a smaller 0.85 fl. oz size that is great for when you travel, in your purse or just as a first time trial.

The argan oil used in Moroccan Oil really helps to nourish and control the hair when you are suffering through weather related hair “trauma.” Derived from the argan nut, this conditioning oil when used on medium-thick hair (curly, wavy or straight) can aid in curl manageability, straightening, heat defense, color hold, shine, and conditioning.

Taylor Swift’s Fearless Hair

Taylor Swift is barely 19 and has a headlining tour to promote her new album Fearless. She writes her own songs and is indeed a very brave young woman with a good head on her shoulders. She even directed and produced most of the elements in her tour (see her interview with Hoda Kotb on NBC).

Speaking of a good head on her shoulders, Taylor always wears her signature hairstyle: all over foiled blond hair, long and full, wavy/curly and very shiny. How do you achieve this look?

If you are a medium to light blond, ask your stylist to give you a full foil with a medium weave in the back and sides and closely spaced slices off the diagonal on top. If you are a darker color, this look can be achieved by doing a foil with 2-3 shades lighter than your shade. Make sure to inform your stylist if you have previous color on your hair as this will require using bleach lightener and a toner to follow. If you are naturally dark, a high lift tint or strongly formulated lighter color will be required (consider a reddish brown or a medium ashy blond.)
If you have wavy curly hair like Taylor Swift: shampoo and condition with the Alterna Caviar Moisture line. Towel dry. Apply Kevin Murphy Bodyguard from mid-shaft to the ends. Finger/rough blow dry the roots with tension away from the part. Twirl the ends into spirals and blowdry them while scrunching. When 90% dry take a 1.5″ curling iron to the twisted ends and curl them up to 3″ from the scalp. Once curled, let cool and separate out the curls with a pick lightly. Spray with Rapid Repar Caviar Spray for shine all over. Then lightly spray with Kevin Murphy Session Spray. (for more hold you can spray before curling.)
If you have straight hair: Shampoo and condition with the Alterna Caviar Volume line. Towel dry. Apply Kevin Murphy’s Anti Gravity from the root to mid shaft. Then apply Kevin Murphy’s Hair Resort to the ends. Scrunch the ends while blowdrying with medium heat on low. Once 100% dry, use the 1.5″ curling iron to add curl from the midshaft to the ends. Here you will not twist the ends (it will weigh down the hair and drop the curl). Use a pick to lightly separate out the curls. Spray with Alterna Caviar Working Spray lightly to the ends and scrunch again.

How to keep your curl frizz-free and defined all day

Start by applying a curl enhancing product, like Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion, to wet hair. This product is important because it adds hold, which helps encourage and create lasting definition.
After your hair is dry, I recommend air-drying or diffusing, you will want to finish with one of the following types of products:

For fine hair- Alterna Flexible Hold Hairspray or Kevin Murphy Session Styling Spray. These types of hairsprays work wonders for fine, curly hair that tends to loose it’s volume and definition through out the day.They are lighter, non-drying, and create a natural finish.

For normal, thick or coarse hair- Kevin Murphy Easy Rider or Alterna Shine Spray helps relinquish frizz and condition the hair just enough to help maintain a frizz-free, defined curl all day. Great for wild, thick, or “puffy” curls.

Important things to remember with curly hair:

Try not to touch it too much- the oils from your hands can cause frizz.
Don’t brush after styled- brushing breaks up the definition of your curls and causes it to look frizzy.
Always use a leave-in conditioner to protect your hair- curly hair is the most fragile because it has bend to it. Healthy hair means less breakage, and less breakage means less frizz. There are also great, weightless leave-ins for fine hair; we carry them!

How To Manage Curly Hair

Curly hair comes in all shapes, lengths, and textures. It can be fine, coarse and medium textured. Men and women both are blessed and challenged with this type of hair. Curly hair types are effected by environmental conditions. Humidity can have the greatest effect on curly hair’s willingness to cooperate with your efforts.

Kevin Murphy‘s Motion Lotion is a product that can help activate natural curl when environmental conditions want to weigh the hair down. It can also help control the frizzes. On Your Way to a Great Straight Blowout with Curly Hair

In this day and age, having the right skills while in your bathroom doing your own hair can make the difference in your confidence when going on a first date, or attending a family gathering or office party.

KNOWING HOW TO STYLE YOUR HAIR IS THE KEY TO FEELING GREAT ABOUT YOUR HAIR.

1) After washing your hair remember that you should NOT rough up the hair’s cuticles with a towel by rubbing the hair to dry. This can cause undo damage. Scrunch the hair upwards with a towel to release excess moisture. Then comb the hair out to release tangles with a light leave-in
(like Kevin Murphy’s Staying.Alive). Never use a brush to detangle hair when wet as it causes excess breakage.

2)Blow dry the hair 70% dry with a warm dryer and your fingers.

3) Apply a smoothing product (Kevin Murphy’s Anti-Gravity or Motion.Lotion) from midshaft to ends.

4) Use a boar bristle round brush that is appropriate for you length hair. Blow dry with medium to high heat section by section from nape to top with medium to high tension to create the most consistent shape. Remember to rotate the brush while using tension.

5) When blow drying long bangs or fringe always blow dry in the opposite direction of where you want the hair to lay. The sides above the ears always overdirect towards the front. This provides the smoothest result with the most body.

6) Finish setting the style by using a cool shot on your dryer and use a workable hold hairspray like Kevin Murphy’s Session spray. This will help your style to stay as well as repel environmental moisture that could ruin your blowout.

Now you have empowered yourself to create luscious blown out hair where once there was frizz and curl.
