Beyonce’s Big Hair

beyonce-300

In an effort to help people with their substance abuse issues, Beyonce unveiled the Pheonix House in Brooklyn, New York. This center helps rehabilitate patients away from drugs and alcohol while simultaneously training them in cosmetology. Doing hair and making people happy can be a great way to feed the soul in addition to being a great career!

beyonce_hd_3e__oPt

Beyonce also just finished a photoshoot with some exciting editorial hair for her clothing line, House of Dereon.

Want some height like Beyonce’s? Try these tips for this “larger” hairstyle:

  • Spray your dry, brushed out hair lightly with Working Spray by Alterna.
  • Tell your stylist to back comb the entire crown section of hair to create a solid base with lots of height. Then, softly back-brush the sections around the backcombing and pin into a bun shape at the crown. Spray again lightly.
  • The hair around the bun can be lightly back-brushed and then curled with a styling iron. Follow by brushing out the hair into soft waves with a cushion brush and spray lightly again.
  • Slowly layer a harder hold spray as you shape the height with the warmth of your fingers/hands. Mold and sculpt the waves on and around the height at the crown carefully. (Try Membrane Gas by Fudge or Session Spray by Kevin Murphy for extreme hold.)
  • Spray with Hemp Shine by Alterna.

With this stellar hair and height you can rock it like the stars!

Check Out Lights’ The Listening

Lights Band

In the past decade, many new music artists have opted to use the advent of the internet to grow their fan base and get their material heard. One such artist is, Lights, a 22 yr. old Canadian born electro-pop singer, songwriter and musician. Check out Lights latest video here:

What inspired Lights? After traveling the world with her family as a child, Lights came back to Canada and began to learn guitar. From there she has written and produced most of her tracks on her own in addition to self-promoting on social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook. She gathered so many fans online it solidified her place in the synth based music realm. She joins such artists like Little Boots, Ellie Goulding and others. Lights even has a weekly comic book series that is posted to her website each week! Check out one of her latest ones here.

Lights newest album is called, “The Listening,” and includes the popular ballad, Saviour. She is currently on tour and soon will be playing with Owl City in Seattle! More details at STG Presents.

Lights’ hair is inspired by her interests in online gaming, comic books and anime. “Even my look is inspired by video game characters – it’s a cross between Laura Croft and Wonder Woman,” she says. Love the look? Here are some tips on how to get her hair:

  • Color: Consult your stylist on what shade of darkest brown to black will look good for your coloring. Lights looks like she has an all over darkest brown hair color with some added warmth. Want to try it on for a limited time? Try demi-permanent which last 5 -9 weeks depending on hair condition. Make sure to use the right supporting products such as color safe shampoo and conditioner to get the most life out of your new color.
  • Cut: This is a long layered cut with texture. Tell your stylist to create a blunt perimeter with concave layers on top. This means that the weight in through the crown will be eliminated and kept towards the bottom. Lights seems to have very thick hair so in order to create movement and “funk” ask your stylist to thin or texturize the interior to remove bulk. Lastly, the heavy swoop bang is created by sectioning from the crown forward then cutting the fringe area around the tip of the nose. Adding texture to the bang gives it movement and manageability.
  • Style: Lights probably heat styles her hair on a regular basis with a blow dryer and flat iron to create straight fullness. Before blow drying, add Morroccan Oil to towel dried hair. You may rough dry on straight to wavy textures, but we recommend round brushing with boar bristle on curly to kinky textures. When dry, flat iron the entire head with a slight scooping out motion to get the straightest look. Add Alterna’s Shaping Balm to add control to the swoop bang in addition to creating soft texture on the ends. Tousle your hair with your fingers for fullness and spray with Extra Hold Spray by Alterna.

Feeling inspired? Rock that hair out! Use passion to propel you forward while promoting yourself! Lights did and look at her now!

Keep Your Hair Looking Fly While You Fly

Fresh Hair While Traveling

Fresh Hair While Traveling

Spring is the time of year when business travel and leisure travel are both at their height. Conventions, conferences, vacations, weddings, family visits all bring a certain amount of preparation when packing to ensure you have all the items you need without overloading your suitcase. Most airlines are starting to charge for oversized or very heavy bags so keeping things minimized is key. At Emerson Salon, we regularly give jetsetters recommendations on items that won’t bulge the duffel bag or budget during travel.

The good news is small bags and looking great are necessarially mutually exclusive, here are some great tips on how to get the most out of your hair with minimal tools:

  • Kevin Murphy Jetpacks: These adorable travel packs of Kevin Murphy products allow you to get your favorite shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and hair products on the go. This is definitely an essential part of any traveler’s emergency kit!
  • Emergency Blowdryer: While most hotels these days keep a blow dryer on site, not all do and even those that have a “blow dryer” don’t always work so we recommend bringing your own dryer for maximum effect. You can get a very manageable foldable travel sized dryer at most drugstores. Look for wattage of between 1000-1500 and many have retractable cords making packing even easier. You can also find travel sized 3″ flat irons for those quick hair touchups between events.
  • Moroccan Oil: Trying to manage thick or fine wavy/curly hair across different climates and conditions can be a major pain, try the 25ml trial size of Moroccan Oil. This handy product helps to impart shine, control frizz, and contains conditioning properties to protect the hair during heat styling. It does quite a lot for such a small package and uses the natural properties of argan oil to keep your hair healthy and going strong.
  • Fresh Hair: Rushing between events? Trying to maximize your time on the beach before heading in to town? If you aren’t able to get back to the hotel to touch up your hair, try Fresh Hair as a way to refresh and revitalize on the go. With a few quick sprays, this handy product will dissolve excess oils and smells after a long day in hot temperatures or long meetings. An absolute must for any beach bag or conference tote!
  • Styling Tools: A few tools are absolutely vital for your styling needs, these are our recommendations on what to pack: make sure to bring a large comb (with fine and wide set teeth), a medium sized round brush (thermal or boar bristle), a few clips, hair elastics or barettes, and one or two fancy pieces of hair jewelry for more formal outings.
  • Hair Spray: Traveling with hairspray can be difficult, so if you decide to bring hair spray, we recommend keeping it to a minimum. Look for something versatile like Working Spray by Alterna which can meet many of your styling needs with one product. TIP: When packing your hair spray, use some tape to secure the cap onto the hairspray can. This prevents it from going off in your luggage when jostled about in the plane or at baggage claim.
  • For guys on the go: Use a medium hold texturizer like Alterna’s Sheer Pomade. It can provide a variety of looks from sleek and sculpted to messy and fun all in one product.

And remember, the last thing you want to do is stress about your hair when you are out of town. So be organized and plan ahead and your tresses will be as happy as you are when you are on the go! Bon Voyage!

Alice In Wonderland Returns to the Theater

Coming this March, Tim Burton’s newest interpretation of the classing tale Alice In Wonderland will be hitting theaters and IMAXs all over the country. Some of the talented cast that Tim Burton has gathered for this film include Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Michael Sheen, Crispin Glover, and Anne Hathaway.

Star studded cast aside, the central character Alice is played by Mia Wasikowa who is an Australian actress an relatively unknown in the US. She did recently star in Amelia and Defiance. Mia is currently slated for a future production of a Jane Eyre remake as well as an untitled Gus Van Sant film.

Alice_in_Wonderland,_2010,_Mia_Wasikowska,_Johnny_Depp,_Helena_Bonham_Carter

As Alice, Mia has gorgeous blond wavy hair that is young and fresh. It looks like they did a subtle foil highlight on her hair in order to catch the light and emphasis movement. To recreate Mia’s soft wave we recommend towel drying hair after shampooing/conditioning. Then, slightly mist the hair with Moroccan Oil Glimmer Shine before you pin curl the entire head, 2″ from the root. This means rolling up 1-2″ sections of hair and clipping them (you can use bobby pins) before air drying or spending 30 minutes under a hood dryer. Once dry, finger separate and spray with Working Spray by Alterna. (For heavier hair textures try loosely iron curling after pincurls to define wave.)

mia-wasikowska-teen-vogue-pixie-cut-1

At the UK premiere of Alice in Wonderland, Mia debuted her new cropped do. Undoubtedly she was tired of caring for those classic long locks from the movie and wanted a simpler and much easier to maintain look. Here we see her in a recent issue of Teen Vogue. This look is fun and modern yet still sweet and feminine. It reminds me of Carey Mulligan’s new haircut (from An Education). What do you think?

How to Pick the Best Hair Dryer

blow-dryer

Want to start heat styling your hair but don’t know where to start? These days it is difficult to know what hair appliance is best for you, your hair, lifestyle and budget. As hairstylists, we realize that investing in a professional level hair dryer may not fit your budget as they can run from $120-$500.

Here, we will outline the best tips on how to find that perfect hair dryer whether in the drugstore, beauty supply, or online. This way you can compare and contrast components and price and make an informed decision!

A lot of people prioritize their needs according to the following components:

Weight: This is important for two reasons. First, the heavier it is the more difficult it is to use and hold. It could cause your arm or shoulder to cramp up depending on how long it is used in one sitting.2) If you intend to travel you might want one that folds up in addition to being lighter in weight.

Wattage: Blowdryers range in wattage from 600w to 1875-1900 watts. What is the difference? Lower wattage dryers are good for finer hair as they take longer to dry the hair but also help to maintain hair health and sheen. Higher wattage dryers are good for dense, thick, wavy or curly hair. Higher wattage can also cut down on drying time but if used on the highest setting regularly can cause heat damage. (Heat damage is when the high heat burns through the hair cuticle in inconsistent spots making it more prone to moisture loss and breakage.) Also, be aware of the wattage as some older outlets will short out a fuse if it is not capable of carrying the load.

Technology: There is some debate among the haircare industry on certain types of newer hairdryer technology. Some have more scientific credo than others. Ceramic, Tourmaline, Ionic and Far Infrared technologies are some of the most commonly discussed. All have specific benefits to them, but some aren’t 100% proven: Generally, these sciences cut down on drying time with less damage than traditional appliances.

  • Ceramic: These dryers use ceramic plates or coils instead of metal and are intended to be self regulating to prevent inconsistent heat and therefore, damage.
  • Ionic: Use negatively charged ions to break down the water molecule in order to hydrate from the inside out. This encourages hair health and shine.
  • Tourmaline: Use a gemstone to increase the number of negative ions more than regular ionic dryers.
  • Far (FIR) Infrared: Use waves of energy invisible to the eye to deeply penetrate and slowly warm from the inside out. There are many studies on the health benefits on the body as well with FIR. This can include stimulated blood flow to the capillaries, elimination of bacteria, viruses, etc, and others.
  • Low EMF: this stands for lower electro-magnetic fields. These energies in large doses over time can cause,”headaches, anxiety, suicide and depression, nausea, fatigue and loss of libido. To date, scientific evidence does not support a link between these symptoms and exposure to electromagnetic fields,” says the World Health Organization. (http://www.who.int/peh-emf/about/WhatisEMF/en/index1.html) But if this sounds alarming, there are now hair dryer available in the low-emf category.

Attachments: Does the dryer include diffuser or concentration nozzle attachments? If so, you are getting more bang for your buck. If not, there are universal attachments you can purchase but are not guaranteed to fit your appliance. (A diffuser disperses the dryer flow to slowly dry wavy-curlier textures without frizz. Concentrators direct air flow to a more specific point and with a more specific direction. Example: You use the concentrator to point the air flow down the hair shaft to make the cuticle lay down for straightening.)

Pricing: Use this knowledge combined with your budget. Some dryers are great that are $25-40. Some are designed for lots of wear and tear for those who often drop or bang the appliance over its life. If you are concerned about its continued functionality, you can always get a warranty your appliance with the manufacturer in case of any problems.

Other heat tools: You can also apply this knowledge to buying a curling iron or flat iron as some of the same technologies are used in their heating elements.

Flat irons that get up to 300 to 450 degrees are best for thicker, wavier hair types and finer hair textures can use more moderate temperatures less than 300 degrees. We recommend a 1 1/2″- 2″ barrel size iron for the more versatility (it can create spiral curls, volume bumps, soft waves, etc.) Flat irons should have at least a 3-4″ length to cover the most surface and have the ability to curve or bevel the hair without too much work,. It is also possible with some technique and practice to create curl or wave with a flat iron by itself.

Another fun tool is a “wave runner” that has a triple barrel to create a consistent S shape to the hair sections. This gives the most controlled wave in less time.

Need some more help? Here are some specific recommendations:

Little Boots: Stuck on Repeat

little-boots_1217885c

We have seen many strong female pop artists emerge in the last few years including Lady Gaga, Ellie Goulding, Peaches and Little Boots. Little Boots is an electro pop star from the U. K. and her newest album, Hands, drops on March 2 in the US. Soon, she will be touring all over the US and Canada playing shows and promoting this fun, effervescent album. She will even be playing Neumos in Seattle on Saturday, March 6th!

Last year, Little Boots became known for her song, Stuck On Repeat, with its unique hook and surveillance style video.

In this video Little Boots has a European hipster style with a black/brown colored long bob. To achieve this look:

  • For color, consult with your Emerson Stylist to determine the perfect shade of dark brown for you. To make this decision, it is important to share with your stylist your if you intend to keep this color long term. Sometimes if you are going significantly darker, you might want to try a temporary version of this hue to avoid costly color corrections in the future. If you are starting out blond, going this dark will require a repigmentizing session (replacement of warmth/depth to hair) before the final application of color.
  • The Cut: This is a longer version of an inverted bob. To achieve this perimeter in the back, cut the line just below the curve of the neck into the shoulders. Then, create the inversion by over directing the sides towards the initial cut. You can customize this style to a side part or create balance and versatility by cutting while parted in the middle. This is also called cutting with the “natural fall”. After creating the perimeter, the layers in back will be concave where weight is removed from the top and shifted towards the bottom. In addition, it seems there was removal of interior weight through texturizing/thinning within vertical sections in the back. Chunky texture is created on a soft diagonal on the top side layers by slithering or slide cutting. Once styled, a textured swoop bang is carved by following a diagonal line from the midforehead towards the temple.
  • The Style: Once towel dried after shampooing and conditioning- apply Volume Sculpting Creme by Alterna Caviar to create a more voluminous but pliable style. Rough dry the hair 80% and then take a large round brush to bevel the under and top layers. Apply some Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy to the ends and aggressively “tousle” the back and the interior of the sides for a messy quality. Spray small spurts of Firm Hold Spray by Alterna Caviar on the interior and bangs (after cutting) to create a soft, full finish.

Ironically, Little Boots decided to completely alter her hair color and style with her newest video for Earthquake. She now looks very similar to Lady Gaga with bleached platinum hair. The hairstyle seen in this video is highly sculpted and coiffed into a more modern version of a blond Princess Leia! Check it out!

Want the hair color and/or hairstyle in this video? Here’s just a tad of what it entails:

  • Bleach and Tone/Color Correction Service: Getting the exact shade of lightest blond can be very challenging when starting with all over dark hair. It also can be damaging if not done correctly. All previous color history should be shared with your stylist in order to avoid loss of length through excessive breakage. It is difficult to guarantee a specific shade in color correction so be open to creating this look in 2-3 sessions with your stylist.
  • Styling: Put your hair in slightly asymmetrical pigtails and style away! Some products that could be used to achieve this style are Hair Shaper by Fudge (for sleekness and sculpting), Hemp Spray Shine, Working Spray by Alterna (first), and lastly Session Spray by Kevin Murphy for extreme hold.
  • HINT: If you have trouble getting all the pieces smooth without flyways, try using a medium heat curling iron to set the hair in place once pinned and sprayed with Working Spray. Have fun! Add hairpiece jewelry like Little Boots and push the envelope! Being brave with your hair sets you apart from the crowd!

Sara McLachlan at the Olympics

0

Sarah McLachlan’s song, “One Dream,” was part of the opening ceremonies last night. She not only performed the song brilliantly with fabulous dance accompaniment, amazing set pieces and lighting but she looked darn fine doing it! She wore a great necklace piece of “bling” in the shape of large flowers that totally glowed and showed off her natural beauty and…..great looking hair!!

Sarah looks like she has had her hair permanently colored all over with a deep, dark burgundy brown. The subtle warmth softens her hair and catches the blue light that danced around the stadium.

Want to achieve her hair style? Try these tips:

  • Start with clean, dry hair on naturally straight texture on medium to long hair: Add Motion Lotion by Kevin Murphy to the mid shaft to ends. This curl enhancer will help in holding the style and retain its bounce and form. Start iron curling from the nape up on sections 2″ wide. Spray lightly with Working Spray by Alterna. (Take the sections vertically to aid in creating the most consistent volume possible.) Iron curl until 2″ from scalp on the nape and sides. You may go close to the scalp on the crown and around the hairline. Using a cushion brush, lightly brush the curls into softer waves. Brush the waves away from the face after backbrushing the top of the head. Scrunch and set with a low setting blowdryer. Spray with Alterna’s Firm hold spray. (for easier styling you can shampoo set the hair on velcro rollers ahead of time after applying Motion Lotion)
  • On naturally wavy/curly hair: Start with damp, towel dried hair. Add Morrocan Oil Styling oil on the mid shaft to ends. Using your fingers, create twisted tendrils around the headshape and diffuse (either with a blowdryer attachment or by scrunching lightly.) Once dry, use iron curl to define the curl on and around the hairline. Lightly pick out the waves with your fingers. Cushion brush the waves around the hairline back and spray entire head with Working Spray. Finger separate waves again, spray with Firm Hold Spray by Alterna and scrunch. Spray Hemp Spray Shine for sheen.

We look forward to the games and hope the closing ceremonies are just as good as the opening!

Evan Lysacek Aims For The Gold

157202603

Evan Lysacek is part of the US Olympic men’s figure skating team and will be competing soon at the Vancouver Olympics. He is extremely talented on the ice and is one of the tallest skaters to grace the competition. He is 6′2″!!! Yet, he performs fluidly and with great technical difficulty as he sweeps Grand Prix and National Skating Competitions.

Evan tends to shirk the sport norm of donning sequins and glitz to get attention on the ice. “I think I’m bringing an element of style and showing that this is my idea of what a modern man should dress like and look like,” Lysacek explains. “It can still be stylish and it can still have some element of fashion, but [also] be masculine at the same time.”

Evan’s hair is also quite modern and very versatile. He keeps it slightly longer with a heavy fringe area so that he can create multiple looks. It looks good forward and messy or to the side and more coiffed. Want to achieve this look? Ask your stylist for longer round layers with a taped nape. Light texture on the crown and sides gives the look movement and play. Try using Kevin Murphy’s Easy Rider for control and light hold or for more defined looks try Sculpting Putty by Alterna.

Good luck getting the gold medal Evan! We’re rooting for ya!

Thanks Dani!

yelp

We just got another great review for our stylist D’Arcy, read this an all of our reviews on our Yelp profile.

“D’Arcy is the cat’s meow! I found her while yelping and I think it was a match made in heaven. I have seen her twice for the baylage treatment. I would recommend this over regular highlighting/ coloring treaments. It grows out super natural which is what you want. Root rot I think not! Easy street parking, convienient location across from QFC.

I recently brought my Mother-In-Law here for a walk in appointment. She was treated like royalty- hot tea and conversation. After her style her stylist sat and talked with her while my 2 hour ‘do was processing. D’Arcy is very personable, professional, hip, and uber talented. I am a regular. I have a ritual every 8 weeks: after my Saturday appointment I head over and gorge my self on crepes at 611 Supreme. (A suggestion from D’Arcy i might add).

Prices are reasonable and are not pushy about product sales. No cliquey, gossipy bs that I have found in salons in Capitol Hill”

Ellie Goulding is Starry Eyed

Ellie+Goulding+ellie3

Ellie Goulding has become a music phenomena at the early age of 24 but actually started writing folk style songs on her guitar at the age of 15. Goulding’s debut album, entitled Lights, will be released this coming March. She already has a totally fun video out of her song,” Starry Eyes.” We wonder where that was shot- maybe a castle or chateau in Europe perhaps. Love it and that fish eye lense they use!

Ellie has recently taken the “quiff” hair style (that Gwen Stefani made popular a few years back) and put her own twist on it. Hers takes it into a more asymmetrical placement with the addition of some loose, modern waves on the remaining lengths of her hair.

Trying to achieve this look? Here are some tips!!!

  • Color: The haircolor on Ellie is a beautiful multi-dimensional light beige blond. This can be achieved in many ways by consulting your Emerson Salon stylist. The methods most likely used for this are multi-dimensional foil or balayage. This means that your stylist designs and places the appropriate concentration of highlights based on your aesthetic preferences, maintenance needs and coloring. Usually, this service will most likely involve bleach lighteners (with toning after) and some sort of balancing lowlight on the sides and underneath that is a minimum of 2 shades deeper.
  • Styling the Quiff: Your fringe area should be at least 4″ in length to achieve this look. Section off 1″ of hair parallel to the hairline at the top of the forehead with a clip after applying Sticky Business by Kevin Murphy to the hairline. Iron curl loosely the 2″ section that is parallel to the previous section. Back brush and back comb the second section lightly. Combine the two sections together by cushion brushing and hold above the head and spray with Working Spray. Twist this section 2 times and carefully move the height of the style towards one side or the other and bobby pin in place. Make sure all stray pieces/fly-aways are tucked into the style and pins are hidden on the interior of the quiff. Spray with Session Spray for firm hold.
  • Styling the Waves: On clean dry hair, use Spray Shine by Alterna lightly all over. Then in 2″ vertical sections, loosely iron curl the mid shaft to ends all over. Using a cushion brush, lightly brush the curls into large waves. Then spray with Working Spray by Alterna for touchable hold and movement.

For additional fun and glamor: Add star shaped hair pins to the style in reverence to the song! We love the stars she put on her palms for the video and thought why not use that inspiration for the hair as well? It could be the perfect way to dress up a day style into night. Have fun!
