At Home Hair Treatments

Here at Emerson, we love our product lines and know that professional, salon-grade products are always the top of the line best option for you hair. But that’s no reason not to also take advantage of the great hair products you probably have stashed right in your kitchen! Check out this collection of the easiest and best home remedies and treatments for your hair.

Product removal;

Feeling some buildup in your hair from cheap shampoos or lots of product? Try this easy vinegar rinse that will remove residue from the hair and keep it balanced. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with three cups of water, and pour it over your hair as a final rinse. You can also try mixing baking soda into your shampoo for a deep thorough clean. (Note: If you find that you’ve got too much build up for these at-home remedies to handle, try Kevin Murphy’s Maxi Wash. Possibly the best invention ever.)

Color:

Looking to boost your color? Here are two easy treatments you can do to either lighten it up or keep your dark strands looking rich and bold.

To help the sun lighten up your hair, mix three parts lemon juice with one part water and spritz it on your hair before going into the sun.

To achieve and maintain a rich dark color, try making a walnut treatment that will boost up your brown and leave it look lustrous. Crush 8-10 walnuts (with the shells) and mix with 8 oz of boiling water. Let it cool, strain out the shells, and keep it refrigerated in a spray bottle, where you can put it on your hair weekly to maintain your color.

Treatments:

There are loads of great conditioning and strengthening treatments that are easy to do for your hair. Try putting mayonnaise (about a half a cup) in your hair to strengthen it (make sure it’s all natural and that you rise it thoroughly). Coconut oil is also renowned for adding shine and protecting hair from the effects of aging; apply it to your hair and let it sit overnight before rinsing it out (wrap your head in saran wrap to protect your pillows)

Also try a great moisturizing mix of avocado and egg yolk. Mix a small mashed avocado with an egg yolk and let it sit in your hair for fifteen minutes before rising and shampooing as usual.

And our favorite surprise treatment? Beer! No really, true story. Take a bottle of warm, flat beer with you in the shower and rise with it after shampooing. It will add intense shine and volume.

Other Tips:

Running late and have to skip the shower, but have oily roots? Use cornstarch as a dry shampoo; it will soak up oil at the roots and leave hair looking clean and shiny.

Salt is a fun beach texturizer. Adding a tablespoon of salt with four oz of water will make a spray that, when spritzed on wet hair after a shower and let air dry, will create a wavy, volumized beach look. You’ll probably want to skip this one if you have naturally dry hair. (Try Kevin Murphy’s Hair Resort for a texturizer that is easier on drier hair)

We hope you find these treatments fun and helpful! As always, if you have any questions about your hair or what products you should be using, feel free to give us a call or stop by, and our stylists will be more than happy to answer your questions!

Ask A Stylist- Beating The Heat

Kelly asks:

“I have lots of hair questions but one that is really a concern at the moment is how to keep my hair from drying out in the summer heat. I feel like my scalp and hair is completely dry to the bone! I have switched shampoos and drink lots of water but nothing seems to help. Any advice?â€

Really good question Kelly- everyone battles with this one! Here’s what our stylists have to say.

Lancer says:

“Ah the sun! The elements do take a toll on the hair. I recommend making an appointment for a deep conditioning treatment. My favorite is Kevin Murphy’s Born Again Treatment, which contains Rose Hip and Rose Absolute ($6K a kilo). Rose Absolute catalyzes the other botanicals in the treatment as it vibrates at a higher speed than the rest! These botanicals are heat and light sensitive; once exposed to the wind and sun, they become energized and moisturize, repair, and regenerate the hair and scalp. Antioxidants stop damage in its tracks as well as the further onslaught of damage by bringing a balance to the hair and scalp!”

Thanks for your question Kelly, and make sure to stop by and make an appointment or pick up your own bottle of Born Again to beat the heat!

How To Prevent Hair Breakage

shinyhair-main_Full

Many factors can contribute to breakage which can leave the hair dull and sometimes frizzy. Here are a few tips to follow that will help maintain the your hair-

  1. Stay away from ponytails. Constantly pulling your hair back with a tight elastic can stress the hair out and eventually cause it to break. If you must pull your hair back on a regular basis, try using a cloth band rather than elastic or rubber. The cloth is a bit more forgiving and wont strain the hair cuticle as much.
  2. Always condition. This smooths and closes the hair cuticle making it less vulnerable to breakage. When the cuticle is open moisture can escape much easier. By applying a simple conditioner (using a leave in conditioner is an added bonus) you can help save your hair. Conditioners also help fight against environmental damage as well. I.e. the sun, wind and pollutions in the air.
  3. If you are experiencing breakage due to a chemical service (highlights, chemical straightening or a perm) then be sure you are using the proper shampoo and conditioner. Chemicals can be very drying to the hair if not taken care of properly. Shampoo and conditioner made for chemically treated hair usually contains extra moisturizing elements that aid in the repair of the cuticle.  You can also use a leave in conditioner like Kevin Murphy’s Leave-in Luxury. Silk proteins soften frizzy, grey and dehydrated hair while Mango Butter and extract of Peruvian Bark moisturises and protects coloured hair.
  4. If you are an avid blow dryer or use a flat iron or curling iron on a regular basis you will want to use products that actually protect the hair from heat. I love Kevin Murphy’s Straight Defence. I apply it to damp hair and style as usual.

You too can prevent breakage!

Extreme Summer Kicks: Looking your Best for a Day at the Amusement Park!

Being from Ohio, I really miss going to amusement parks in the summer. If you ever travel to Ohio and enjoy thrill rides and coasters, check out Cedar Point. They have been the leader in amusement park technology since before your shiny hipster arse was born!!! Here is a clip of one of their newest thrill rides, “Chaos”:

After which your hair might look like this:

To keep your hair looking great both pre and post-coaster, wear it in braids, ponytails or pigtails AND deep condition it first. Moroccan Oil makes a great Intense Hydrating Mask that keeps all hair types supple and in shape during the summer. Riding upside down on rides such as my personal favorite, the “Raptor”, wreak havoc on long hair, so be sure to deep condition it the night before and let it dry COMPLETELY before tying it up in bands (it can break; especially with the inertial, gravitational, and centripetal forces of roller coasters.

The Argan Kernel Oil is from the thorny evergreen Moroccan Ironwood Tree (Argania Spinosa). It adds high shine to everything in which it is an ingredient and is extremely rich in tocopherols. After carotene, tocopherols are the most important anti-oxidants in the human cell and provide protection from the cell destroying free radicals. It also smooths, softens and revitalizes the hair and skin and keeps them flexible. (Source)

Hair Color Correction

This week I have been busy with corrective coloring.

There are two reasons why a color service is deemed “corrective”:

1) A hairstylist formulated and/or consulted with a client wrongly.

2) A client has been coloring his/her hair at home for awhile and has led to a problem.

When a stylist has made an error, the best thing to do is to have that stylist fix the problem if possible. This isn’t always possible, and so we end up correcting other stylists’ work. Each salon uses their own color system. Color systems are not alike. There are some similarities and luckily, experienced stylists can almost always remedy these errors easily. OTC hair color is too variable and the chemical makeup of OTC hair color is inferior to professional salon color. OTC hair color is already formulated in a bottle, and it comes with a standard developer. Most clients’ hair is not standard, and multiple issues arise. Here, I will explain why hair ends up too dark!

Hair Darkening:

  • Over time, the home colorist colors the entire lengths of his/her locks, resulting in an overabundance of color pigment deposit and an end result of the ever-common “Too Dark Ends”.
  • This effect is further aggravated with the presence of any amount of gray hair on the head, because gray hair requires a different chemical formulation than non-gray hair does.
  • When harsh chemicals (usually found in OTC hair color products) are layered onto hair strands continually, the hair’s integrity, elasticity, and porosity are severely compromised.

What we do:

  • Here at the salon, when we color a client’s hair darker, we don’t color the entire length every time. We do a “Retouch”, once our client’s hair is the color they love. Depending on the home hair care program utilized, the ends may or may not fade.
  • We use and recommend our tested color-safe products in the salon to maintain our client’s hair color in between appointments. This ensures optimum color longevity! Some darker colors, like reds, will fade a little even then, so we do what is called a “Refresher” service to the ends of the hair. This is not the same thing as depositing permanent color to the hair that has already been colored, because that leads to damage over time and too-dark ends.

What can you do if you have this problem:

  • Make an appointment with your hair professional. We can remove the pigment safely and the chemicals we use for color correction in the salon are safe and will not damage your hair further.
  • It usually takes two or three appointments to get your hair into completely stellar shape. Your hair may need a further application, depending on how the OTC color lifts out of your hair, or it may need reconditioning to even out your hair’s uneven porosity that results from over-processed hair lengths.

Here is what normal and damaged hair strands look like when magnified:

If you attempted to color your hair at home using box color and the result was not what you were expecting…don’t panic. Make an appointment today and we’ll fix your hair problem.

Reasons to Deep Condition Your Hair

Most people don’t realize the essential role deep conditioning (not just daily) can play in the overall health and manageability of their hair. Here are some quick points on the reasons it can be so important.

  • If your hair is naturally wavy or curly it can have a tendency to be lacking in moisture which can lead to breakage or frizz. A deep conditioner if used properly can impart lasting moisture that will calm the hair and make it easier to style whether going curly or straight.
  • If you have chemically processed or over processed hair a deep conditioner can lower the chances of added breakage and split ends as well as help the life of your color.
  • In the winter time we shock our hair with dry inside heat or outside frigid cold. Some of us even do a lot of winter outdoor sports and that alone can dry the hair out. Added moisture can act as a barrier to environmental damage and leaves the hair less vulnerable.
  • Deep conditioning can also impart shine depending on its ingredients. Anything with avocado oil, natural silicones or plant extracts are usually best. The higher the quality of ingredients the better. Kevin Murphy’s Born.Again. is great!

When using a deep conditioner always shampoo first, then towel dry so the excess water doesn’t dilute the power of the conditioning properties. Start at the ends and work your way up to 1″ away from the root as the hair shaft at that location is still hardening. Comb through. You may use a cap or put the hair up in a towel and wait for 10-20 minutes. The warmth aids to drive in the moisture. Rinse thoroughly and style as usual.

Some deep conditioners carry a higher protein load so make sure not to use them more than once or twice a week. It is possible to over keratinize the hair which ironically can cause hardening of the cuticle and will lead to breakage and brittle hair.
If used correctly, these deep conditioners can turn bad hair days into good ones!
