Ask A Stylist-Removing Product

Tim asks:

“My hair is chemically colored black, so in order to give it a natural looking shine I use olive oil based products – which works great. The problem is getting them out at the end of the day. What’s best for removing oil based products?”

Thanks Tim! Great question. Here’s what our stylists have to say:

John says:

“Kevin Murphy-Maxi Wash works great to exfoliate the hair and scalp without stripping the color.”

Emily says:

“Agreed. Maxi Wash is a great exfoliant and will release the oils without drying the hair.”

Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash 250

Thanks for your question Tim! If you’re interested in this product, stop by Emerson to talk to a stylist and pick some up for yourself; we’re always fully stocked!

5 Tips For Great Hair While Camping

camping

Emily’s tips on how to manage your hair while camping….

  • Dry skin to combination/ don’t wash hair just spray roots with moveable hairspray and tease/ keeps volume and oils from distributing and flattening volume.
  • Finger through a leave in conditioner or curl cream to increase moisture and curl or wave on ends only to keep volume.
  • Marsha Marsha Marsha…. Yes brushing the natural oils through the hair and redistributing them throughout makes for natural well kept locks.
  • Buns and braids in the heat of course keeps you cool and dry also braids can be undone in the morning to release amazing waves and volume.
  • Pin curls before bed or during the day and release, creates natural looking waves and curl. Section into one inch sections of 95% dry hair and twist around finger pin with bobby pin close to scalp.

Emerson on Yelp!

yelp

Thanks to our fabulous clients, we’ve had lots of great reviews lately. Here are some of our favorites!

Guy says:

Good price, excellent quality and friendly service.

Lancer Forney is an ace. Fast and efficient, he knows how to do a great looking cut. The atmosphere in the salon is very relaxed and there’s no pressured up-selling of products. If you need, they provide.

Noura says:

I am usually very picky when it comes to my hair and hard to please. I moved to Seattle 6 months ago and was in need for a good hair salon. When I heard about a great experience my friend had with Emerson Salon I decided to give it a try. First of all, I love that they give you the option to book an appointment online. The process was very organized (the website is clear and user-friendly) and they gave me a reminder call one day before my haircut.

The salon decor is nice and I felt good there waiting for my turn after a long day at work. My hair dresser Ellen was very nice and professional; she understood my hair type and used the right product accordingly. After the haircut, my hair looked great and healthy. Plus, I didn’t have to struggle with explaining what I wanted exactly because she knew what she was doing.

I totally recommend Emerson Salon for anyone who is looking for an unforgettable hair experience.

Steph says:

AMAZING experience.  Never getting my hair cut anywhere else.  Very friendly service, inexpensive, and the stylist knew exactly what I wanted and did an amazing job.  It is also located very conveniently in Capitol Hill.

Andy says:

I just moved to Seattle a few months ago.  My hair was starting to get long and it was about time to get a haircut.  I was dreading finding a new place to cut my hair.  But then there was an article on Mashable about a Seattle salon that was heavy into social media.  Turned out that salon (Emerson) was in my neighborhood.  I called them up and set an appointment with their super friendly receptionist.  When I showed up for my appointment, I didn’t have to wait at all.  I told the hairstylist I wanted a haircut similar to one they featured on their blog recently.  She knew exactly what I was talking about and gave me a great haircut.  Just a really great experience all the way around.  I’m really glad I found this place.

Mrs K says:

As a former hair stylist, I am not always easy to please and I know exactly what I want.  I’ve been in here several times and even had a major color correction (went from darkest brown to platinum) and have always had great, professional service.  I usually see Emily (love her!) but I’m also a mom on the go and don’t always know when I will be able to make it in.  Which is no problem because I feel comfortable seeing any of the stylists there.  The owners ensure that the stylists keep their education current by enrolling them in classes at Vidal Sassoon and in salon classes pretty frequently.  So important!!!  To top it off, the atmosphere is great, fun neighborhood and friendly staff.  Also air conditioned :)

Thank you all so much to our amazing clients. You all are so awesome and we love every day we get to spend with you. Had a great experience at Emerson? Take a second to go to our Yelp page and tell us about it!

Yelptastic!

yelp

We’ve gotten some great reviews on Yelp and wanted to share with you some of our favorites!

SP says: “Lancer is the best stylist and colorist I have ever had. After so many times at the prior salon I went to patiently explaining how ‘really, please, no stripeys and please, really, I mean it when I say get the greys” well my hair color looks the best it has probably ever. It actually makes me so happy to go there because I love how I look afterwards and how many compliments I get. He got the color AND the cut right, and people say I “look so great what have you done differently?!?” if they haven’t seen me in a few years or they say “Oh I LOVE your new cut!!” if they see me more often than that.”

Jennifer says: “Ellen is the greatest! I followed Ellen to Emerson Salon from her old salon. She understands hair and what would make each client look amazing. I tell everyone about her and would recommend her to anyone looking for a stylish. If you are just looking for a haircut, you are going to miss out on her true talent.”

Amanda says: “emily rules!!! a friend of ours owns the salon and recommended emily, and i was extremely happy with the outcome. i have straight, but thick asian hair (being that i am asian), and emily was not freaked out about cutting my hair. i’m not sure why, but most people are in awe of my hair (which is bad because it means they don’t cut hair like mine very much) or totally scared of it (which is also bad). emily actually said asian hair is really easy to cut, and she certainly had no problems. she saw all the flaws of my previous stylist(s) and fixed them. she gave me exactly what i wanted, which has always been a problem when i get my hair cut. it’s been a couple weeks since i cut my hair with her, and i am still in love. i’m sad that i am only here ’til august, otherwise emily will have to be my stylist forever!!!”

Brent says: “All I can say is A+ for ANDREA!!! I am amazed by how well I am treated at this salon. Always a hello and would you like something to drink. Very professional staff. I really enjoy every visit. Not to forget Peter Duerr the best man with scissors I know. I’m gonna miss you a lot. Everyone at Emerson Salon ROCKS!”

Maggie says: “Emily is the reason I go to Emerson Salon. She is a trained, experienced professional who can do the hair of a rockstar, a rockette, or even a rock. She’s done both my husband’s and my hair for about six years – she has an expertise in color that is unmatched and does miracles no matter what your age. I highly recommend Emily in particular and Emerson Salon as a professional business and supporter of Capitol Hill endeavors.”

Thanks everyone for the kind words! You are why we do this business. Loved your experience at Emerson Salon too? Head on over to our Yelp page to share your own thoughts.

Thanks Whitney!

yelp

Emily just received a brand new review on our Yelp profile:

“I love Emily! I never thought it mattered what I did with my hair, since it is fairly wavy. I’ve had friends cut it, gone to nice expensive salons, and most often, done something like Supercuts. However, due to a promotion I tried out Emerson, and booked an appointment with Emily, whose description says she likes long wavy hair. The only haircut I have ever been impressed with. Seriously I had SO many compliments, even straight guys I knew who never said much about how I looked tell me I was a “new woman” with this haircut. I love it, and have been back twice now to have it done again. Emily is great, friendly, easy to talk to, and so talented!! Highly recommended!”Whitney

Emily and Amanda’s Favorite Things for Spring

EmilyLikes

Emily says: Caviar moisture shampoo & conditioner are a must, sulfate & paraben free great for moisture repair and skin renewal. The technology in the Caviar line is very similar to my favorite face creme La Mer. Moroccan Oil’s oil and mask are great for intensive treatment and repair, blocking UVA and UVB rays. The Stella McCartney roller ball fits perfectly into a pocket or clutch. I cannot leave the house without my Dior lip gloss. Jo Malone creme makes me feel pretty and energized for an early Spring. Amanda says: Spring is here and there are a few things that I must have on hand. My beauty regiment changes a bit with the warmer weather and the sun shining. Makeup of course gets brighter as do the colors in my wardrobe. I have put away my hats and scarves and pump up my hair with some new products. I start with Fudge’s Membrane Gas – applying it to damp hair, mostly at the root will give my hair some lift, aka Bridget Bardot hair. I then smooth out my ends with a bit of Alterna’s Radiant Smoothing Lotion. In the event that my hair feels a little damaged due to overexposure to the sun, I break out Kevin Murphy’s Born Again treatment. I apply it to damp hair and let it sit anywhere from 2-20 minutes, rinse and style as usual. View Amanda’s complete collection details.
