They MET Well

This past weekend, The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art held its annual MET gala exhibiting and honoring women’s fashion. Its a star studded event and a perfect opportunity to see who was bold and beautiful and who was not. This year there seemed to be less daring fashions but more play with shorter hemlines and interesting silhouettes. The hair in particular was very diverse and showed how the right hair style can compliment a high end fashion piece.

Picture 5Picture 4

We saw two hair trends emerge from the MET steps carpet. The first trend to show itself was the 1930′s -esque smooth waves and high shine. We saw a lot of this at the Oscars red carpet but this look differed in that the waves were tighter and more high fashion. Taylor Swift, Kate Bosworth and Sarah Jessica Parker all donned the trend. The winner of the night overall was Kate Bosworth. Her hair was phenomenal and probably utilized many “old school” techniques like shampoo setting pin curls and finger wave patterns. (An honorable mention goes to SJP as she has had some hair missteps over the last year. Her color was perfect and soft and the waves weren’t too distracting from her gorgeous Halston gown.)

The other trend of the evening was the slightly messy and “unkempt” loose waves with some light frizz . It is somewhat disappointing to see this “meh” hair in contrast to the wonderful gowns but its generally understood that at such an event the hair is not the star of the gala. We want to bring our attention to the intricately constructed gowns. Claire Danes and Chloe Sevigny stayed understated but accessible with their hair looks. Claire had tousled, messy waves around her shoulders and Chloe took her relaxed wave into a simple, messy updo.

Lastly, a look unto itself was Renee Zelweger’s blond bob with texture and facial framing. Noone else had anything similar to her hair and she smoldered with it! Going shorter is always a risk but this length is great as it must be easy to style and looks great messy or perfectly coiffed.

Looking to use one of these trends on your hair? Here are some tips:

  • Always start with freshly shampooed and conditioned hair.
  • Use a thermal protectant like Bodyguard by Kevin Murphy (before blow drying.) It drives out water moisture and leaves in the Peruvian bark moisture needed during heat styling.
  • Use a flexible hairspray like Alterna’s Working Spray while styling until you are completely finished. Then use a harder hold to set. Try Session Spray by Kevin Murphy.
  • Don’t forget the shine. When taking pictures you want the hair to gleam regardless of the amount of hairspray added. Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna is great during styling because not only is it shiny, but if you make a mistake it can break down extra product in the hair. When complete, use Spray Shine by Alterna: it gives a luminous shine but sits on the hair and does not break down product.
  • And remember! These trends are only for inspiration. Make your hair look your own by working with natural textures or play with hair jewelry.

We love fabulous hair whether it be formal or casual, trendy or classic. Have fun with your hair! Come in to Emerson Salon and we promise you’ll enjoy it!

Sara McLachlan at the Olympics

0

Sarah McLachlan’s song, “One Dream,” was part of the opening ceremonies last night. She not only performed the song brilliantly with fabulous dance accompaniment, amazing set pieces and lighting but she looked darn fine doing it! She wore a great necklace piece of “bling” in the shape of large flowers that totally glowed and showed off her natural beauty and…..great looking hair!!

Sarah looks like she has had her hair permanently colored all over with a deep, dark burgundy brown. The subtle warmth softens her hair and catches the blue light that danced around the stadium.

Want to achieve her hair style? Try these tips:

  • Start with clean, dry hair on naturally straight texture on medium to long hair: Add Motion Lotion by Kevin Murphy to the mid shaft to ends. This curl enhancer will help in holding the style and retain its bounce and form. Start iron curling from the nape up on sections 2″ wide. Spray lightly with Working Spray by Alterna. (Take the sections vertically to aid in creating the most consistent volume possible.) Iron curl until 2″ from scalp on the nape and sides. You may go close to the scalp on the crown and around the hairline. Using a cushion brush, lightly brush the curls into softer waves. Brush the waves away from the face after backbrushing the top of the head. Scrunch and set with a low setting blowdryer. Spray with Alterna’s Firm hold spray. (for easier styling you can shampoo set the hair on velcro rollers ahead of time after applying Motion Lotion)
  • On naturally wavy/curly hair: Start with damp, towel dried hair. Add Morrocan Oil Styling oil on the mid shaft to ends. Using your fingers, create twisted tendrils around the headshape and diffuse (either with a blowdryer attachment or by scrunching lightly.) Once dry, use iron curl to define the curl on and around the hairline. Lightly pick out the waves with your fingers. Cushion brush the waves around the hairline back and spray entire head with Working Spray. Finger separate waves again, spray with Firm Hold Spray by Alterna and scrunch. Spray Hemp Spray Shine for sheen.

We look forward to the games and hope the closing ceremonies are just as good as the opening!

D’Arcy Takes the Stage

Emerson Salon loves to support and contribute back to our community and as a part of this effort, one of our stylists (D’Arcy Harrison) will be performing in a charity benefit staged reading of the Vagina Monologues by Eve Ensler.

As some of you know, D’Arcy started off as a “theatre brat” before starting her hair career and welcomes the opportunity to apply her talent for a great cause! In addition to performing, Emerson Salon is donating 2 haircuts (with D’Arcy) and a product package for the silent auction.

This event will benefit two charities:

  • Children of the Night, ” a privately funded non profit organization established in 1979 for the rescue of children from child prostitution.” (www.childrenofthenight.org).
  • Refugee Women’s Alliance “a nonprofit, multi-ethnic organization that promotes inclusion, independence, personal leadership and strong communities by providing refugee and immigrant women and families with culturally and linguistically appropriate services. ReWA advocates for social justice, public policy changes, and equal access to services while respecting cultural values and the right to self determination.”(www.rewa.org)

While creating the Vagina Monologues, Eve Ensler took many interviews with women about how they felt about their private anatomy and their individual experiences regarding the topic. She then turned the interviews into monologues that became a huge hit Off Broadway when she performed them in a one woman show. Now, the play is performed all over the world to help support women’s causes and nonprofits.

This is part of a national event called V-day and will be held Feb 14th and 20th at 7pm at the Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle. The address is 4408 Delridge Way SW. For tickets go to: www.brownpapertickets.com. More info here.

I look forward to seeing you there!!!!

Movie Review: Up In The Air

We went to see Up In The Air this weekend and we were incredibly surprised at how good this movie is. Featuring George Clooney as a modern day recluse who revels in the anonymity of air travel and has found a living flying around the country and laying off workforces for insecure managers. He is quite secure in his life role until he is stuck with training a new and promising employee played by Anna Kendrick. The movie was extremely entertaining with a strong enough story to hold my attention for the entire flick. If you are looking for a night out at the movies this weekend, this movie is definitely worth your time. Check out the trailer below:

Concert Update – Zero 7 at Showbox on 12/12

Zero 7, the downbeat electronic indie band, is coming to Seattle to put on another show. While they have been long acclaimed they have struggled to live up to their past glory they received on their first album Simple Things. All the same they have made some great tracks and one of their best is the song Destiny (video below), hopefully their set will include some of these classics. More details of the show can be found here on the Showbox website.

Pacific Northwest Ballet presents Nutcracker

The holiday season just isn’t the same without all the trappings of Christmas, such as pop-rock holiday music, mad rushes at the mall, and gingerbread lattes, but one absolute must every holiday season is the annual showing of the Nutcracker by the Pacific Northwest Ballet. This production of Hoffman’s classic tale includes some impressive dancing, massive sets, and one giant mouse king. Easily PNB’s most iconic performance, if there is one ballet you attend, this is the one you should see.

The Nutcracker’s season began on Nov 27th and will run through December 30th. If you are looking for something a little different, the Dec 30th performance is what they call the “Nutty Nutcracker” performance where the cast gets to let off a little steam and have fun with there own version of the tale. Tickets and more info is available on the PNB website.
