Support Your Hair Pro & Avoid Home Hair Disasters

Written by D’Arcy Harrison, Co- Owner of Emerson Salon

At the current moment— the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order is in full effect in WA state until May 4th, 2020 however the Cosmetology sector is unclear that May 4th will be the GO TIME date for salons and barbershops. Washingtonians are already getting stir crazy but across the country, most states have only justs followed suit on social distancing and doing their best to adhere to emerging announcements from the CDC and WHO.

Hairstylists, colorists, assistants, barbers, receptionists, managers, owners, distributor reps and many more inside the beauty industry are out of work. No income.

DEALING WITH AMBIGUITY: There are no assurances when these personal care businesses will be allowed to open again. Whether a small business owner, employer, or employee- calling it an industry ripple is a gross understatement- this is like an earthquake and tsunami COMBINED. The “NEW New World” is one where it is now possible to force all hair related businesses to halt in order to avoid breaking the 6ft Social Distancing guidelines. To help support our industry- donate at the image to your left.

Panic, anxiety, fear, sadness, anger and disbelief are just some of the emotions we have felt. Many are unsure how they are supposed to support their families with no income for weeks on end. Many working class workers like hairstylists barely make enough $ over the cost of living in some areas and could never be prepared for a disaster of this nature. It is a huge wake-up call to small businesses that having a rainy day fund or 2 weeks worth of savings just is not enough to weather a shut down of this nature. Business interruption coverage on insurance is not being approved 100% of the time by insurance companies. This was a rude awakening to many who felt they would have a safety net through that avenue.

Email from WA State DOL

“How do you do hair with social distancing? The brutal answer is you don’t. No hair anywhere. The WA State Dept Of Licensing issued clarification and reiterated –—- NO HAIR CAN BE CONDUCTED ANYWHERE

It is a temporary law that if broken carries the risk of losing licensure, up to $5000 fine and up to one year in jail. Additionally, continuing to do hair services ignores the reason we need to stop doing business- the virus and the potential of losing lives. Additionally, our license does not permit creating custom color kits for clients or resale of professional products. A pro must formulate, mix and apply themselves according to licensure. Color manufacturers generally will not support it and neither will an insurance company if something goes wrong. Additionally, the stylist or barber themselves need to stay home and stay safe to avoid contagion. If they are exposed- they risk having to quarantine away from family as well as possible illness and/or death. Stay Home. Stay Safe.

So WHAT ARE hair pros doing while they cannot work?

Hair industry professionals continue supporting their businesses and have come up with some creative options as well as ways to spend their time while in quarantine.

Online Education

LEARNING: Many manufacturers and distributors have stepped up to offer free live and recorded education daily on social media or on their website platforms. This means your pro will be STRONGER when they return as they have been starved for stretching their skills while disconnected from being able to service clients. If you are a hair pro- we recommend these pages for products we love: Love Kevin Murphy facebook page, Moroccan Oil Pro or Olaplex Users facebook group .

COMMUNITY: Stylists, owners, employees and more convene online in social media groups on Facebook. Sharing videos on TikTok. Sharing their Instagram handles. Sharing funny hair and quarantine related memes. Making videos and resources to inspire and support the mental health of those struggling with the new paradigm. Motivating each other to stay strong, come together and to persist. “We will get through this together,” is the ironic mantra of many. If you are a Washington State hair pro- we recommend joining the Facebook Groups for The Sovereign Stylist and Cosmetologists of WA United. (If you become an enrolled Member Advocate you can get access to exclusive content on an ADVOCATES ONLY Cosmetologists United Facebook Group. Disclaimer: Co-Owner of Emerson Salon D’Arcy Harrison is one of the new association leaders at COWU.)

ALTERNATE INCOME STREAMS: Companies have shifted into high gear to offer ability to create custom online stores and affiliate programs so hairstylists and barbers can earn income recommending products to their clients for at home use and earning a commission. In some instances, companies have raised the commission to support the crisis of so many losing their incomes overnight.

Sell Gift Cards Online, allow 1 per service in small increments

Many pros have also created email and text messaging to their clientele to purchase gift cards for future services through Square or other online POS/gift card platforms. Many hoping to protect their income in the future utilize a policy of smaller gift card amounts that allow for use of one gift card per service.

LOANS and UNEMPLOYMENT: Simply put- workers who are employed by a company or individual and have a paycheck with taxes taken out had practically instant access to WA state Unemployment Insurance since they had paid into the programs. The self-employed, independent contractors and small businesses did not. It wasn’t until the federal CARE Act was enacted that aa glimmer of hope was given to those without any income stream. There is, however, patience required in the face of confusion and chaos and as the new programs were slowly rolled out. Banks and applicants are learning new details as they emerge daily if not hourly.

Most programs are accessed via SBA.gov

1) Some people are eliglible for the PPP (Payment Protection Program) and some are not. 2) Most if not all self employed are eligible for the EIDL (Economic Injury Disaster Loan) but the processing may take weeks- which means more ambiguity. 3) Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) is now possible for part-time and self-employed workers but each state has to create a new platform to deal with workers who never qualified for their state UI in the past. In WA State, they announced April 18th is the target of the PUA roll out but most anticipate continued challenges as record numbers apply for assistance—even MORE ambiguity. There are rumblings that the CARE Act is just the first step in many steps the federal gov’t will make to support the unemployed and small businesses. We think we are maxed out on ambiguity right now!

Additionally, WA State just announced a new grant system that is doled out per county and that can be accessed here: http://startup.choosewashingtonstate.com/covid-grants/ or if you have a small business near Amazon headquarters go to: https://www.aboutamazon.com/job-creation-and-investment/neighborhood-small-business-relief-fund

Hairstylists and barbers are extremely resilient, creative, passionate, strong, SPECIAL and tenacious individuals. Businesses are doing whatever they can to keep blood pumping to the heart and souls of the people who make the hair industry so special. We wish we could do hair right now! We ache for the day when we can get back to work and none of us likes the idea of sitting around for months — but if it means more will live through this danger we are begrudgingly complying. Reach out to your trusted hair pro and tell them you SUPPORT their struggles. Offer to buy them groceries, send them a gift card or just phone them up to help keep their spirits up. We usually are the “hair-apist” but now…you can give back to the ones you depend on and respect.

They need YOU as much as you need them!

WARNING:
Do not DIY

Licensed professionals inside the WA State Department Cosmetology are not permitted to instruct non-pros on how to use, mix or apply professional or non-professional color. We advise you strongly to remember that cheap grocery store color or randomly chosen shades can go horribly wrong without education or expertise.

Think it through—-Bright roots or blotchy color. Brassy orange bands or the color going way darker than you intended— OR WORSE it melts or breaks in obvious places. And then no pro is available to “fix” it and when they are able to fix it in a month or MORE—the cost is quadruple because you put something horribly difficult to remove into your hair.

Additionally, we ask you that you wait for us to get back to work to get your haircut. Yah- it will get shaggy but you are home and only doing internet conference calls right? Give yourself and others permission not to feel like they HAVE to adhere to a beauty standard right now. Isn’t that such a blessing? We can focus on what we DO for ourselves and each other instead of a superficial desire or

Need to cover gray???? Wear a hat, wear a scarf use mascara or eyeshadow or even Purchase a root spray! Need to rehab those damaged ends? Buy Olaplex no3 Hair Perfector! Hair feel dry? Get some Moroccan Oil! Need some styling wax or pomade– get some Kevin Murphy Night Rider or FreeHold! The possibilities are endless! Need a product consult? Contact D’Arcy or Lancer from Emerson Salon to ask for a recommendation.

SHOP WITH US!

We understand completely that it is frustrating to not be permitted to have a professional assist you in covering your grays or touch up that haircut. But we truthfully understand that hair and $ is not more important than lives. We are here for you for all your at home haircare.

A local artist named Glynn Erin did a fantastic job painting our boarded up business. Thanks Glynn! instagram.com/glynnrosenberg

See it as LIBERATION from society telling you how to look! If you want to do your hair up its for YOU and your mental health. Its for the nourishment of your hair and follicles and not a LOOK. Its for fun!

Think of it also as supporting your hair pro in SOLIDARITY! Many pros are running with campaigns to encourage clients to be patient with hashtags like #getrooted or #letitgrow. We recommend taking funny pics on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter and tagging us. We love staying connected with you— See ya in person on the other side Seattle!

Henna For Hair

Co-Owner Lancer has been asked many questions about henna and there are many variances that make coloring hair with henna unique. Here is some great information that can help inform you about whether henna is a good choice for you and your hair, as well as what to expect from henna, how to prepare for your henna appointments, and how to take care of your hair post-henna treatment at home.

What Henna Color Can and Cannot Do:

  • Henna deposits pigment onto the hair. It cannot lighten hair. Henna is often permanent and difficult to color over.
  • Henna dyes do not contain chemicals that are required to change the color of dark hair.
  • Henna is natural, and individual results vary, based on one’s hair color.
  • When henna is applied on black or dark brown hair, the result will be within the auburn to burgundy range, with red highlights that will be visible in the sunlight.
  • On light hair, henna might look perfect, or it might come out intense orange or red, since henna doesn’t fade very much on light or fine hair.

What Is In Henna Color and How Does It Work?

  • Blonde, Brown, Auburn, Mahogany, and other shades of henna colorants contain amla, indigo, walnut, rhubarb, and lawsonia.
  • Henna can be enhanced by adding other natural ingredients such as chamomile, beet powder, paprika, coffee, and indigo.
  • Henna works by depositing natural pigments that coat the hair and also provides shine to the hair.
  • This coating is what conditions your hair and makes it shiny, but is also why it’s difficult to remove.

Henna Benefits:

  • Natural Henna is 100% naturally grown & chemical free. The hues produced by henna are natural and vibrant.
  • Henna treatments enhance volume and sooth the scalp, and it also reduces dandruff.
  • Henna’s benefits are cumulative; with repeated applications over the years, henna improves the hair’s texture.
  • Since henna is natural, it conditions and colors your hair in a natural and safe manner.
  • Henna naturally conditions, strengthens, removes excess oil, protects hair from sun damage, and leaves hair silky and soft.

First Time Henna Users:

  • Everyone’s hair is different, and getting rid of unwanted henna color is rarely an option.
  • I always recommend doing a strand test before a first time henna service, because natural dyes also affected by your natural color, as well as any other colors you have on your hair.
  • Henna can only be grown out or cut out of the hair, because it is a permanent stain. it can be color shifted or enhanced only with another henna product, since it coats the outer hair shaft which affects the penetration of traditional chemical colors.
  • Your results may vary and it may take up to 3-4 applications for your hair to recognize henna.
  • If you don’t see your desired color right away, wait 48-72 hours to see your results.
  • Henna stains hair red-orange, but the stain is translucent and will combine with your natural color.
  • Repeated henna applications will result in a deeper color.
  • Henna can become less translucent over time from repeated applications, by applying a deeper henna mixture, or from mixing henna with indigo.
  • Sometimes an additional henna application is needed for the optimal results, especially on gray hair.
  • Gray hair tends to be stubborn and can be difficult to cover with henna because henna is so natural, and nature takes its time.
  • Henna will dye white hair a natural red or a deep red.
  • Henna will dye blonde hair red, which can translate as intense orange.
  • Henna on red hair will make the hair a deeper red.

Post-Henna Service (At Home Care Instructions):

  • Please shampoo your hair between 24-48 hours of application to lock in your color.
  • If you have deep red, wine red, mahogany, or burgundy henna on your hair, you should then wash your hair for 3 consecutive days to help lessen the pigment bleeding.
  • Red clay is used in these henna colors, which tends to make the color bleed.

Tips to Lessen Color Bleeding:

  • Avoid using any white linens during the bleed stage post-red henna coloring.
  • Make sure your hair is dry before dressing, and avoid light colored clothing.
  • Please avoid piling your hair on top of your head while washing your hair. Always rinse from roots to tips and consider washing sections separately.
  • Rinsing with cold cool water is very important to help seal the hair cuticle, lessening dyes escaping.
  • Using conditioner when rinsing henna helps lessen color bleeding.

Celebrate US!

Has it REALLY been 5 years since Lancer and D’Arcy took over ownership of Emerson Salon? WOW!

Time sure flies when you’re having fun with hair! This unique location inside an old 1920’s auto row building on Capitol Hill in Seattle, WA continues to host experienced small business hair pros who serve quality hair services to their happy hair clients. Our location is centrally located and serves a cozy yet quirky steampunk vibe with old bureau stations and fun purple accents. All of the service providers inside this location are empowered to run their business as they see fit- schedule, online booking, pricing and more!

Join us in celebrating OUR story:

In 2008, Alex Garcia and Matt Buchan established Emerson Salon at 909 E. Pike St. in Seattle, WA. They made a huge impact as they pushed the concept that social media, an expert blog and stylist profiles as imperative to showcase a hair salon in this modern age. From 2008-2012 Lancer and D’Arcy worked as commission based employees and established clientele in the location as employees.

In 2012, the business model was switched by previous owners to renting chairs to independent contractors. Within a small period of time, D’Arcy and Lancer guided colleagues through the process of becoming self employed cosmetologists. Additionally, they wanted to learn the right way to run a small business and attended a business development course through Washington Ventures non-profit organization. They continued advanced training through Peer Loan Group, marketing and financial management courses as well in their pursuit of legal and ethical business practices.  2012 until present, D’Arcy and Lancer have maintained self-employment as independently run booth rent cosmetologists who are highly regarded by the community and clients alike.

In 2014, co-owners Lancer Forney MacMahon and D’Arcy Harrison took over the Emerson Salon location. With legal counsel assistance, they negotiated a new commercial lease with 4-N Associates as well as an extensive transfer agreement with previous owners of the DBA name, goodwill  and assets. B.Please LLC applied for, presented and was granted a “Business Builder” federally backed loan through Washington Ventures and the Small Business Administration. A  B.Please LLC partnership utilizes “Doing Business As” of Emerson Salon.

2014 and beyond: Emerson Salon co-owners (Lancer Forney MacMahon and D’Arcy Harrison) have a combined experience of over 35 years in the cosmetology industry. They are also female and/or LGBTQ and work daily to provide a safe space for everyone in the historically LGTBQ+ friendly Capitol Hill Area.  They also work onsite as cosmetologists themselves and ensure the business is presented professionally on a daily basis via a maintained salon space and online presence (website, connections social media, stylist booking, & blog .)

In Winter 2019, Emerson Salon’s D’Arcy Harrison assisted in killing 6-7 bills in the WA State Legislature aimed at eliminating booth rental and dramatically curtailing small business. Through her advocacy, testimony, marketing efforts and bill analysis she aided support of 1000’s of cosmetologists in WA State to continue to do business with hours & schedule flexibility while paying all licenses and appropriate taxes.

——– and that leads us to now ……September 2019 where Emerson Salon is now a FINALIST for an Association of Washington Business Excellence Award. The ceremony will be held at Benaroya Hall Nov 20. WISH US LUCK! We would love to share the fancy glass award with our community who has supported our success and longevity!! Thank You for all YOUR LOVE!

So Many Hair Sprays- How Do I Choose?

According to our Kevin Murphy product representative Zach, “The Opportunity of ‘Why’ is real in the U.S.” There is a growing need for “no style” products on the rise, and smell is no longer a factor for (most) consumers.

Within the Kevin Murphy line of non-aerosol sprays, there are many to choose from and each product a unique feel, texture, and weight on hair.

  • Touchable has a satin finish and is weightless. It is also sulfate, paraben, and cruelty-free.
    • Medium Hold
    • Contains Carrot Seed Oil, an antioxidant.
    • Does not break down; has staying power!
  • Bedroom.Hair enhances natural texture/curl separation while providing shine.
    • Soft Hold
    • Provides shine, separation, and texture.
  • Doo.Over is super matte and powdery.
    • Provides “Texas Hair”
    • Stronger Hold.

There are also two great aerosol sprays in the Kevin Murphy line.

  • Session.Spray is a strong hold finishing spray, and it has the strongest hold.
  • Session.Flex has a soft hold. Its lightweight formula never flakes, and provides a workable hold without crunch. It is like Touchable, but its hold WILL break down.

What About Hair and Sun Protection?

Clients often ask me which products, if any, contain sunscreen. I highly regard #KevinMurphy products, so I sought an answer from them, and this is what Kevin Murphy had to say:

“UV protection is extremely important in haircare. However, it’s not the same as the SPF factor you see with sunscreens that are used for the skin. Most sunscreens, for all intents and purposes, sit on the surface of the skin to protect it from burning. With haircare we can’t do that because that would make the hair heavy. So instead, we have great technology that is weightless which allows us to use certain plant extracts, like Sunflower Seed Extract and Safflower Seed Extract which protects the hair in a great way from harmful UV rays. This protection, of course, goes a long way towards preserving hair colour, moisture levels and internal hydration of the hair and scalp. A few of our most concentrated UV protecting products are MOTION.LOTION (a great product for anyone’s beach bag), UN.TANGLED which is the perfect leave in conditioning spray fresh out of the ocean or pool. Both products allow the hair to dry beautifully in a natural way and have the added insurance of protecting your hair from the sun.”

Color Care At Home

Just because a color may be “permanent”, hair color doesn’t last forever. ALL hair color, whether natural, temporary, demi-permanent, semi-permanent, or permanent, will dull and fade over time. Protect your color investment by slowing the fading process by following these tips!

1) Wash less often, and consider using dry shampoos between washes.

2) When you DO shampoo, wash and rinse your hair with cooler water (easy to do in the summer for sure!) This helps keep your color from running.

3) Use shampoos and conditioners that are formulated to maintain color. UVA and UVB protective shampoos and conditioners keep your color looking fresh by protecting from the sun’s harmful rays that dull color over time, and using pigmented shampoos and conditioners, such as the Love Kevin Murphy Colouring.Angels at home between salon appointments to deposit color temporarily.

4) Watch the heat styling. Using hot tools on high-heat settings will fade a color quicker than anything. Use a thermal protectant spray before applying heat from your blow dryer or hot irons, because thermal protectants create a barrier between your hair and the heat. Using a lower heat setting is much safer in the long run and also helps prevent moisture loss that is inevitable from using hot tools on your hair.
