Extension Care

Shampooing: Extension hair doesn’t need to be shampooed every day since it does not get the conditioning benefits of natural oils that your hair normally gets. shampooing too much will dry out the extension hair. 1-2 shampoos a week is enough. I recommend first shampooing with a detoxifying shampoo (like Kevin Murphy Maxi Wash) to clean the hair of product, oil, and debris; then a moisturizing shampoo (Kevin Murphy Hydrate Me wash or Alterna Caviar Moisture Shampoo). Use the pads of your fingers instead of your nails to massage around the extension point so build up is removed without pulling at your hair. You do not need to massage the shampoo into hair down to the end, rinsing out the shampoo is enough for extension hair.

Conditioning: Since extension hair doesn’t get your scalp’s natural oils, conditioning your hair is important. ALWAYS condition your hair after it is shampooed (Kevin Murphy Hydrate me Rinse or Alterna Caviar moisture conditioner are great) NOTE: Do not put conditioner at the scalp, this may cause your extensions to slip! Next use a leave in conditioner and thermal protection product before drying (Kevin Murphy Leave in Luxury, Alterna Caviar Leave ins, or Moroccan Oil) About every three to five shampoos I recommend a deep conditioner to keep your hair and the extension hair in top health (Moroccan oil intense hydrating mask or Kevin Murphy born again treatment)

Brushing: Always brush your hair before and after you shampoo, before you braid it at night, and after you take your braid out when you wake up. The rule you learned as a little kid to start from the bottom up still applies here! First detangle the ends (easiest to do with a paddle brush) then go row by row and finger through your extensions at the top to make sure they are not twisting together. After you have done that in the row take a boar bristle brush and gently rock it down right after the extension point (after the method is done, below the copper or keratin) to make sure the short ‘baby hairs’ don’t want to tangle and matte together.

Boar-Bristled Brushes

Sleep Care: After brushing out your hair, you want to braid it before you go to bed. This helps keep your hair from matting during your sleep. The three ways that I find best are a big side braid, two side braids, or a braided ponytail.

Side Braid

Styling tips:  A smoothing lotion or balm is best when blow drying your extensions, as it will smooth down the cuticle and make the hair shiny. A nice shine spray can help with flat ironing or curling and finishes your look

At Home Hair Treatments

Here at Emerson, we love our product lines and know that professional, salon-grade products are always the top of the line best option for you hair. But that’s no reason not to also take advantage of the great hair products you probably have stashed right in your kitchen! Check out this collection of the easiest and best home remedies and treatments for your hair.

Product removal;

Feeling some buildup in your hair from cheap shampoos or lots of product? Try this easy vinegar rinse that will remove residue from the hair and keep it balanced. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with three cups of water, and pour it over your hair as a final rinse. You can also try mixing baking soda into your shampoo for a deep thorough clean. (Note: If you find that you’ve got too much build up for these at-home remedies to handle, try Kevin Murphy’s Maxi Wash. Possibly the best invention ever.)

Color:

Looking to boost your color? Here are two easy treatments you can do to either lighten it up or keep your dark strands looking rich and bold.

To help the sun lighten up your hair, mix three parts lemon juice with one part water and spritz it on your hair before going into the sun.

To achieve and maintain a rich dark color, try making a walnut treatment that will boost up your brown and leave it look lustrous. Crush 8-10 walnuts (with the shells) and mix with 8 oz of boiling water. Let it cool, strain out the shells, and keep it refrigerated in a spray bottle, where you can put it on your hair weekly to maintain your color.

Treatments:

There are loads of great conditioning and strengthening treatments that are easy to do for your hair. Try putting mayonnaise (about a half a cup) in your hair to strengthen it (make sure it’s all natural and that you rise it thoroughly). Coconut oil is also renowned for adding shine and protecting hair from the effects of aging; apply it to your hair and let it sit overnight before rinsing it out (wrap your head in saran wrap to protect your pillows)

Also try a great moisturizing mix of avocado and egg yolk. Mix a small mashed avocado with an egg yolk and let it sit in your hair for fifteen minutes before rising and shampooing as usual.

And our favorite surprise treatment? Beer! No really, true story. Take a bottle of warm, flat beer with you in the shower and rise with it after shampooing. It will add intense shine and volume.

Other Tips:

Running late and have to skip the shower, but have oily roots? Use cornstarch as a dry shampoo; it will soak up oil at the roots and leave hair looking clean and shiny.

Salt is a fun beach texturizer. Adding a tablespoon of salt with four oz of water will make a spray that, when spritzed on wet hair after a shower and let air dry, will create a wavy, volumized beach look. You’ll probably want to skip this one if you have naturally dry hair. (Try Kevin Murphy’s Hair Resort for a texturizer that is easier on drier hair)

We hope you find these treatments fun and helpful! As always, if you have any questions about your hair or what products you should be using, feel free to give us a call or stop by, and our stylists will be more than happy to answer your questions!

Ask A Stylist- Beating The Heat

Kelly asks:

“I have lots of hair questions but one that is really a concern at the moment is how to keep my hair from drying out in the summer heat. I feel like my scalp and hair is completely dry to the bone! I have switched shampoos and drink lots of water but nothing seems to help. Any advice?”

Really good question Kelly- everyone battles with this one! Here’s what our stylists have to say.

Lancer says:

“Ah the sun! The elements do take a toll on the hair. I recommend making an appointment for a deep conditioning treatment. My favorite is Kevin Murphy’s Born Again Treatment, which contains Rose Hip and Rose Absolute ($6K a kilo). Rose Absolute catalyzes the other botanicals in the treatment as it vibrates at a higher speed than the rest! These botanicals are heat and light sensitive; once exposed to the wind and sun, they become energized and moisturize, repair, and regenerate the hair and scalp. Antioxidants stop damage in its tracks as well as the further onslaught of damage by bringing a balance to the hair and scalp!”

Thanks for your question Kelly, and make sure to stop by and make an appointment or pick up your own bottle of Born Again to beat the heat!

Dry Scalp or Dandruff?

A dry scalp and dandruff are easily mistaken for one another when you don’t know the true difference between the two. I have a lot of people sit in my chair and say that they struggle with dandruff and have been self-medicating with Head & Shoulders or some equally horrible product, with no relief. You most likely don’t have dandruff, and medicated shampoos for dandruff are actually going to make dry scalp worse.  The first step to treating dandruff or dry scalp is to know what they are!

A myth – some people think that their dandruff is caused by their scalp being too dry. They try to deal with this by not washing their hair with shampoo, or washing it less often, believing that washing worsens the problem. In fact, dandruff usually gets better when you shampoo more frequently with the right shampoo.

Dandruff occurs when your scalp produces extra oil, made by glands at the base of each hair, which holds the tiny flakes together to make bigger, more noticeable flakes.   A tiny fungus seems to be part of the reason some people get dandruff. This fungus is called Malassezia (mal-a-sea-zee-a) or sometimes Pityrosporum (pit-ee-rose-por-um). This fungus makes the skin cells grow much faster, so there are a lot more dead cells; these mix with the hair oils to make bigger flakes.  To help the production of extra oil and fungus, it’s recommended to avoid citrus fruits, bananas, tinned fruits, strong tea/coffee, pickles and refined or processed foods, Keep hair and scalp clean to avoid accumulation of dead cells. Also, hair should be brushed daily to improve circulation and to distribute the oil throughout your hair.  If those don’t help, talk to your doctor about getting on a medicated shampoo to kill the fungus.

Dry scalp is common and can be from a change in the weather, poor quality shampoo or a buildup of product on the scalp. The use of harsh shampoos is one of the most common reasons for dry scalp. The chemicals in the shampoos remove too much of the natural oil from the hair and scalp, and the end result is an itchy, flaky scalp and hair that lacks any type of luster or natural body.  Hard water can also cause a dry scalp. Even if the shampoo product is recommended for dry hair and scalps, it will not work effectively if hard water is used to wash and rinse. Honestly, the best way to get rid of dry scalp is to use better quality shampoo. To get rid of the build-up from cheap shampoos I recommend using Kevin Murphy’s Maxi Wash shampoo.  Once you get those layers of build-up off and want to keep your scalp feeling great and flake-free, use Alterna Life Solution Scalp Therapy Shampoo.  This will keep your hair and scalp healthy and prevent the build-up from coming back! Another great option for a healthy scalp is to come in and get our Moroccan Oil Dry No More Professional Scalp Treatment.

As always, feel free to call or stop in and one of our stylists will be more than happy to help you figure out what products or treatments will be best for you!

Ask A Stylist-Removing Product

Tim asks:

“My hair is chemically colored black, so in order to give it a natural looking shine I use olive oil based products – which works great. The problem is getting them out at the end of the day. What’s best for removing oil based products?”

Thanks Tim! Great question. Here’s what our stylists have to say:

John says:

“Kevin Murphy-Maxi Wash works great to exfoliate the hair and scalp without stripping the color.”

Emily says:

“Agreed. Maxi Wash is a great exfoliant and will release the oils without drying the hair.”

Moroccan Oil Wows Hollywood!

Moroccan Oil has quickly become a favorite product of our clients at Emerson Salon. We love the product line because it is great for most everyone’s hair…and IT WORKS!

rosario-dawson yes 2

Moroccan Oil also has a very diverse celeb fan base! Rosario Dawson loves Moroccan Oil. It treats and tames her hair texture, which can be dry, coarse, and frizzy otherwise. Beyonce loves her natural intense curl but not the frizz. Moroccan Oil’s Intense Curl Cream works for her by moisturizing with the key ingredient, Argan Oil, while controlling the frizz without leaving greasy residue in her hair.

Charlize

Moroccan Oil was widely used by stylists during the 2010 Oscars. Moroccan Oil’s Glimmer Shine Spray was widely utilized by stylists to create the high shine that polished the red carpet hair styles they created.

Anna Kendrick

For Anna Kendrick, Moroccan Oil’s Styling Cream worked to keep her soft, romantic hairstyle looking great by the Argan Oil- infused moisture and reduction of static and frizz. Blondes can have it too! Celebrity stylist Enzo Angileri used the new Moroccan Oil Light to keep Charlize Theron’s fine, blonde hair shiny, smooth and natural by drying it into her hair to create a perfect palette of workable texture that looked natural and healthy.

Other celebrities who use Moroccan Oil products include Salma Hayek, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Rachel Zoe, January Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Jordin Sparks, Pink, Lea Michele and many, many more!

How to Pick the Best Hair Dryer

blow-dryer

Want to start heat styling your hair but don’t know where to start? These days it is difficult to know what hair appliance is best for you, your hair, lifestyle and budget. As hairstylists, we realize that investing in a professional level hair dryer may not fit your budget as they can run from $120-$500.

Here, we will outline the best tips on how to find that perfect hair dryer whether in the drugstore, beauty supply, or online. This way you can compare and contrast components and price and make an informed decision!

A lot of people prioritize their needs according to the following components:

Weight: This is important for two reasons. First, the heavier it is the more difficult it is to use and hold. It could cause your arm or shoulder to cramp up depending on how long it is used in one sitting.2) If you intend to travel you might want one that folds up in addition to being lighter in weight.

Wattage: Blowdryers range in wattage from 600w to 1875-1900 watts. What is the difference? Lower wattage dryers are good for finer hair as they take longer to dry the hair but also help to maintain hair health and sheen. Higher wattage dryers are good for dense, thick, wavy or curly hair. Higher wattage can also cut down on drying time but if used on the highest setting regularly can cause heat damage. (Heat damage is when the high heat burns through the hair cuticle in inconsistent spots making it more prone to moisture loss and breakage.) Also, be aware of the wattage as some older outlets will short out a fuse if it is not capable of carrying the load.

Technology: There is some debate among the haircare industry on certain types of newer hairdryer technology. Some have more scientific credo than others. Ceramic, Tourmaline, Ionic and Far Infrared technologies are some of the most commonly discussed. All have specific benefits to them, but some aren’t 100% proven: Generally, these sciences cut down on drying time with less damage than traditional appliances.

  • Ceramic: These dryers use ceramic plates or coils instead of metal and are intended to be self regulating to prevent inconsistent heat and therefore, damage.
  • Ionic: Use negatively charged ions to break down the water molecule in order to hydrate from the inside out. This encourages hair health and shine.
  • Tourmaline: Use a gemstone to increase the number of negative ions more than regular ionic dryers.
  • Far (FIR) Infrared: Use waves of energy invisible to the eye to deeply penetrate and slowly warm from the inside out. There are many studies on the health benefits on the body as well with FIR. This can include stimulated blood flow to the capillaries, elimination of bacteria, viruses, etc, and others.
  • Low EMF: this stands for lower electro-magnetic fields. These energies in large doses over time can cause,”headaches, anxiety, suicide and depression, nausea, fatigue and loss of libido. To date, scientific evidence does not support a link between these symptoms and exposure to electromagnetic fields,” says the World Health Organization. (http://www.who.int/peh-emf/about/WhatisEMF/en/index1.html) But if this sounds alarming, there are now hair dryer available in the low-emf category.

Attachments: Does the dryer include diffuser or concentration nozzle attachments? If so, you are getting more bang for your buck. If not, there are universal attachments you can purchase but are not guaranteed to fit your appliance. (A diffuser disperses the dryer flow to slowly dry wavy-curlier textures without frizz. Concentrators direct air flow to a more specific point and with a more specific direction. Example: You use the concentrator to point the air flow down the hair shaft to make the cuticle lay down for straightening.)

Pricing: Use this knowledge combined with your budget. Some dryers are great that are $25-40. Some are designed for lots of wear and tear for those who often drop or bang the appliance over its life. If you are concerned about its continued functionality, you can always get a warranty your appliance with the manufacturer in case of any problems.

Other heat tools: You can also apply this knowledge to buying a curling iron or flat iron as some of the same technologies are used in their heating elements.

Flat irons that get up to 300 to 450 degrees are best for thicker, wavier hair types and finer hair textures can use more moderate temperatures less than 300 degrees. We recommend a 1 1/2″- 2″ barrel size iron for the more versatility (it can create spiral curls, volume bumps, soft waves, etc.) Flat irons should have at least a 3-4″ length to cover the most surface and have the ability to curve or bevel the hair without too much work,. It is also possible with some technique and practice to create curl or wave with a flat iron by itself.

Another fun tool is a “wave runner” that has a triple barrel to create a consistent S shape to the hair sections. This gives the most controlled wave in less time.

Need some more help? Here are some specific recommendations:

Once your appliances are bought, come here for more heat styling tips! We’ve got lots of time conserving ideas and fun tips to create your own looks at home. Have fun and play!

Valentine’s Day

-1

Forget the flowers this Valentine’s Day and get a little creative. Pamper your significant other with a haircut, conditioning treatment (comes with a nice and relaxing scalp massage), color or blow dry and style.

Flowers die and they just aren’t original. Chocolate is great, but also not too high on the creativity scale. Dinner is a lovely idea but on Valentine’s Day it’s hard to get romantic when the restaurant crams in as many guests as possible then tries to rush you out. Take my word for it, spoiling your significant other with a service from any one of our stylists here at Emerson Salon will impress and de-stress. Show them that you are not only original but thoughtful.

If a haircut doesn’t sound like enough, we offer several different lines of luxurious hair products for all types of hair. We carry Alterna which is a great line that offers many alternatives for styling products, shampoos and conditioners. Kevin Murphy, which is an excellent line that uses mostly natural products and essential oils. We also have a promotional offer when you buy Angel Wash Shampoo and Conditioner you receive a free Staying Alive leave in conditioner ( a $22 value). We carry Moroccan Oil which is an amazing, versatile line. And last but not least, Fudge products. Great for shorter hair and men’s hair.

This year, think outside the heart shaped box and treat that special someone with a gift from Emerson Salon! Happy Valentine’s Day!
