Mad Maxxin’

The long awaited Mad Max movie is coming out! It is called Mad Max: Fury Road and takes Mad Max on a journey  through the post-apocalyptic world with a band of women trying to escape a savage warlord. It stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Riley Keough and Zoe Kravitz. Performance artist and feminist, Eve Ensler, was brought on as consultant to make sure the George Miller based flick sincerely represented strong women in a major way.

madmax1

At Emerson Salon, we are fans of post-apocalyptic looks and think there are some fun hair inspirations to try from the movie. Here we talk about the fierce females’ hair look that rock out this film with unique and gritty style.

Here is Zoe Kravitz’s bold haircut (see left.) It is not a typical “pixie cut” as the texture and almost non existent bangs are disconnected to create a shattered effect.  The shape is still tapered and rounded to the head shape and is most likely achieved with slide cutting or razoring work. Her high cheekbones and long neck really help create a dramatically angular look and helps to add to her character work in the film.

madmax2    Next up is Riley Keough as “Capable.” Her hair is a beautiful shade of vibrant auburn and styled in a messy, frizzy wave. If you have longer hair you can french braid your hair on either side of the hair when half damp with beach texturizer and allow to air dry or blow dry to create undulating waves with ease. Then release and rough up with your fingers once the braids are removed.

To achieve this hair color can be a simple one step process at a professional colorist if you have light hair or medium naturally occurring blond. If you have dark hair it might be necessary to lift or lighten the hair in order for the orange based color to show up vibrantly on your hair. Reds fade pretty quickly so make sure to review with your stylist how to best and maintain this high octane shade. We recommend using Color Proof or MoroccanOil brand Shampoos and Conditioners. TIP: Less shampooing means less fadage so make sure to stock up on dry shampoo!

We are so excited for this movie! Check out the trailer and info below!

Olaplex Revolution

olaplex1

In the cosmetology profession it is very important to stay current not only on trends and new application techniques but new innovations in chemical technology. There is a new system that is making hair colorists go NUTS! Its called OLAPLEX.

The system was designed by organic chemists who wanted to “solve problems” and the biggest challenge facing the haircoloring industry is the issue of breakage. More and more, people are asking for trends that demand getting the hair lighter, faster and with less breakage.

This is where Olaplex comes in. Hair is keratin proteins that are made up of disulfide bonds. These bonds are linked together and can get broken down during a lightening or haircoloring service. This system helps mend those bonds as they are broken so hair can accept more extreme changes with less likelihood of breakage. Its important to understand that it doesn’t guarantee against breakage but minimizes its probability.

Famous colorists from Tracy Cunningham, Guy Tang, Sally Hershberger and many others have been experimenting with the 3 step system and are loving the results. One of our owners, D’Arcy Harrison, picked some up to try and was impressed with the results.

Kristen had Natural Level 5 hair and wanted to try the new extreme color ombre trend. In order to achieve the look she asked for it required lifting the hair over 3 levels through some very orange and gold stages. The goal was to get her hair to level 10 and 11 so the semi-permanent blue/violet and silver would show up appropriately.

NOTE: Whenever the hair is lightened or darkened 3 levels or more this is called “COLOR CORRECTIVE WORK.” Special care and expertise is required in order to achieve predictable results. Additionally, the service can cost more because of extra time and product used due to its corrective nature.

D’Arcy combined the It&lyHairfashion Easily Blond Bleach and 40 vol with the No. 1 Olaplex Bond Multiplier. She then applied the bleach in a feathered balayage technique and put Kristen under heat for 10 min.

kristenbeforekristen after

D’Arcy was amazed! The hair on the ends was a level 10 and the midshaft was a level 7/8. So D’Arcy mixed up some more bleach and olaplex and applied to the darker areas and let process for another 20 min. at air temperature. Then the hair was rinsed and the No.2 Bond Perfector was added at the shampoo bowl for 5-10min. The hair was then roughly dried and the Pravana Vivids Blue and Violet were applied to the midshaft with Silver with a dash of Blue blended into the ends. Kristen was put under a medium heat dryer to drive in the semipermanent in order to make it last longer. The entire service was over 3 hours long. There is a No.3 to the Olaplex system for at home care following the service but Kristen opted for some MoroccanOil Hydrating Shampoo, Hydrating Conditioner, and Weightless Hydrating Mask as the argan oil moisture helps hair stay flexible and not brittle.

Kristen did suffer some breakage on the last 2 inches of her hair  (it was coiling and turning gummy) so D’Arcy did some strategic cutting and carving to eliminate the damage from the hair once dried and styled. But what is important is the hair got lighter faster, with less breakage and with more even results.

We will continue to keep experimenting in the salon with it as its very important to understand how to work with new products before using them on paying clients. If an individual indepependently run stylist  at Emerson Salon chooses to add this as an amenity it could be an add-on charge to any coloring service.

Pro’s and Cons Of Pastel Hair

We have seen such a surge in requests for pastel hair color lately! With mainstream celebrities like Nicole Richie, Julianne Hough, Hilary Duff, Katy Perry, Cara Delevigne and others trying on the trendy look – its hard to resist diving in too! Here we detail the fun AND the reality of going for a super light fun shade like seen below……….

palepurplepasteltealpastelmauve

PRO’s of Pastel Hair

You are “ON FLEEK!” Be part of a current trend and the envy of your friends!

Its non committal! Have fun with different pastel shades when you feel like something different once it fades. Or you can play with hair chalk or sprays to try on a pastel hue for a night!

Spring/Summer are a great time to show off this color change because pastels reflect sunlight beautifully!

CON’s of Pastel Hair

Most hair needs to bleached first to super light/white blond in order for a pastel to show up properly. Darker shades and previously colored hair will need to be bleached significantly to get to a blond without orange or gold in it. This can cause damage and makes it difficult to guarantee how long a pastel will last. The more damage incurred the quicker a pastel may fade because of the hairs’ porosity. We recommend prepping your hair 1-2 weeks before bleaching with deep conditioning treatments as well as following a bleach and tone service. We love the Deep Quench Moisture Masque by ColorProof-it can rehab the most damaged hair and is also vegan and gluten free.

It is important to know that any pastel cannot be guaranteed how long it will stay in the hair. Pastels are usually a semi permanent which stains the cuticle layer of the hair and washes out every time it is rinsed or shampooed.   There is also a lot less pigment deposit in a pastel than a fully concentrated color.

-Listen intently to your colorist. Your stylist can recommend ways to keep the color looking fresh. Schedule regular color refresh appointments so you never look dull or lackluster Most people with vibrant color avoid shampooing their hair as much as possible by using dry shampoo in between washing. We love Alterna Caviar’s Powder Dry Shampoo. At Emerson Salon, a colorist can design a custom color formulated conditioner by EVO Fabuloso Pro to help increase the longevity of a pastel.

Your haircolor is an investment. Getting a pastel haircolor can be expensive to get and expensive to maintain. Be prepared that the service isn’t the only place where your dollars are involved. Appropriate shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioning and leave-in products will be essential to maintaining your fun, new haircolor as well as its health.

Sunlight is your haircolor’s enemy. The summer UV rays will eat through your pastel haircolor so protect it with a UV protectant like Moroccan Oil. It also moisturizes the hair and protects from heat styling so it is your GO TO PRODUCT to keep your hair looking and feeling good after receiving a pastel with bleaching and toning.

Hopefully we have prepared you for the true nature of getting that AWESOME new pastel hair you’re dying for and we will see you in the chair! Book with an Emerson Stylist by contacting one directly TODAY!

Frolick With Fun Hair at Festivals

The music festival season is upon us! When the sun comes out, the desire to dance  outside and listen to top acts strut their stuff means you have to have fun hair! (Duh!)

Here we review some of the looks we saw popping up at SXSW and Coachella recently as you prepare for Sasquatch and other fests…

kylielilac

The trendiest women’s hair colors are pastels this spring. Light Teal, slate gray and pale lilac (see right above) are all the rage and young women are calling off the hook at the salon for them! It is good  for you to know, however, that in order to achieve these looks that there will be bleaching involved. Hair must be lifted to a pale white/yellow blond in order for any pastel to show up. Otherwise the remaining pigment in the hair will override the color you are trying to achieve (imagine trying to put pale blue on yellow/gold hair- yellow and blue makes green! no bueno!)

Bleaching the hair to this level  of lightness can be extremely damaging to the hair and can be costly for you as a client. So, if you want to avoid hair breakage – you can always opt for a nice wig (see Kylie Jenner above) or try a colored hair powder or spray and set it with some flexible hairspray like MoroccanOil Medium Hold or Alterna Caviar’s Working Spray, so it will not rub off on clothes or friends you hug. These methods simply wash out in the shower with shampoo and water but be careful- if your hair is porous or damaged it could stain the hair a tad.

braidpart27-creative-braid

You can do some beach waves with Hair Resort by Kevin.Murphy and take a small, reverse french braid down the center part (left above) or try a loosened up french braid (right above.)  Need some tips? Try watching this YouTube tutorial here.

lumbersexualmencoachella

Guys like to have fun with their festival hair too!

You could try what has been playfully coined,”The Lumbersexual Look,” (see left above) which is a very tight fade/clipper cut with a buzzed in part along the disconnection, longer hair on top (for parting and pompadour-ing) and a full beard that dramatically transitions in the sideburn area. Try using Night Rider or Super Goo by Kevin Murphy to help hold the coiffed style on top. Or you can try a clean and tight taper cut with a dreaded/messy top (see right above, Vic Mesa at Coachella.)

Bring your inner boho-chic out with these festival trends and make sure to hit up Emerson Salon for all your hair needs- our independent hairstylists are excited to work with you! Book with one directly today….

WOW! Extreme Color Trends 2015

Emerson Salon is situated smack dab in the center of Seattle’s urban area that includes students, professionals, young style mavens,  artists and the LGBTQ community. This creates a cornucopia of hair styles and hair colors to stare at up and down  the Pike and Pine  corridor near where the salon is located.  We have MANY clients ask for exciting and bold shades of extreme haircolors like red, blue, green, etc.  Extreme haircolor is generally a bold semi permanent color that is deposited following a bleaching service.

mutedpinktealpaleblue

THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  1. Some colors require the hair to be the lightest shade of blond to show up. Example: Any pastel hue will need to be on light blond or almost white hair. Deep Purple can go on hair that is medium blond or caramel color. If your hair is previously colored or naturally dark it may be very damaging to get your hair to a lightness that will show a pastel best. So, we recommend being flexible with what you want as we generally aren’t going to attempt to bleach you to lightest blond if we think your hair may break due to aggressive bleaching.
  2. Once bleached, your hair will be sensitive to high heat or too much shampooing. High heat can cause major breakage on the now delicate bleached and colored hair so we recommend a medium setting. Shampooing every other day is not recommended as the color washes out with every shampoo. TIP: Get a custom color conditioner made by an Emerson Stylist by  Evo’s Fabuloso Pro. Whatever goes down the drain can be replaced by a color conditioner to help make the gorgeous shade last.
  3. Many of our stylists use Professional Pravana Haircolor ChromaVivids.  It is MUCH better than Manic Panic, Special Effects or drugstore color. Why?

A) Pravana has silk proteins which help mend the hair prior to bleaching

B) The pigments are higher quality and can be made to last longer by adding heat for 20-30min. without a cap.

C) the residue will NOT stain your items and will wash out with hot water, soap and oxiclean or bleach. TIP: if you get an extreme                              haircolor, avoid white towels, shirts and linens for the first week or two. The residue is known to leak or rub off sometimes. Make                             sure to clip hair away from neck and face to avoid residue transfer during sleep.

OR, if you want something that is completely temporary and will generally wash ALL the way out on light colored hair we can use Fabuloso Pro (see below) that is a semi permanent based on fabric dye to give you a fun new color for a 3-5 weeks only!

fabuloso

Here at Emerson Salon we want to make you happy and will design the look based on your hair needs. If you are willing to come in every 4-6 weeks then we say GO FOR IT! Do the color all over and rock out that new fantastic hue! If you do not want to be coming in every 4-6 weeks we recommend a balayaged color that will leave more root to buffer grow out. OR! try a blended dip-dyed effect that focuses the color only on the mid shaft and ends.

What are the latest trends  for extreme haircolor? We are seeing a lot of different shades of teal and green, muted pink and icy blue (see images above) or violet gray. We recently saw a challenging extreme haircolor called,”Pixelated haircolor” that creates small boxes of veiled, extreme color that is outline by a dark brown or black color (see below.)

PIxelated haircolor2pixel1

Be Bold, Be Brave and book a service for that AMAZING and VIBRANT color you’ve been wishing for, our independent stylists here at Emerson Salon would love to have YOU in their chair!

Exciting Oscar’s Hair 2015

kellygaga

We recently did a post about the conservative hair we recently saw on the Golden Globes Red Carpet. Now, we will point out the more daring looks of the Oscars parade of hair and gowns for the Academy Awards. We saw quite a bit of predictable hair but below we recount the ‘dos that excited us the most!

Our first prize for bold hair at the Oscars goes to Kelly Osbourne (left above.) She not only paired her recent shade of pale lilac with a great gown but she had a very interesting french twist on the center, top of her head. It was sleek and shiny and helped to seemingly elongate her height in the black high-low gown she chose.

Our second prize for bold hair goes to the inimitable Lady Gaga. She is known the world over for the beautiful lace front wigs she dons for press and performances and this is no exception.  This wig’s color has a deep, ashy root subtly blended into a greyish platinum blond that is styled in loose waves. When trying to achieve similar looks to these we recommend a cocktail of Young.Again Immortelle Oil with Anti Gravity by Kevin Murphy. Apply to towel dried hair and blow dry 100% and then iron curl horizontally in big sections before using a boar bristle brush.

ritaoraemmastone

We give honorable mentions to singer Rita Ora and actress Emma Stone. Rita has cropped her hair short and bleached and toned it a light, warm beige color. At the Golden Globes she wore her hair piece-y and funky but in this rendition she opted for a side part with a slick, wet look.  Very classic and refined comparatively to how we saw her new hair styled previously.

Emma has finally returned to the brilliant shade of deep copper red that we know and love her for after donning blond for the last couple years.  This shade of hair coupled with side pinning loose finger waves is perfect for pairing with her vintage inspired dress. Want your hair to stay like theirs? Use Session Spray by Kevin Murphy when finishing your style and it will hold all night whether you are relaxing or dancing the night away like the stars at the Oscar after parties!

Come meet  with one of our awesome stylists and let them help you glow like these celebrities on the red carpet….Book with an independent Emerson stylist by clicking on their profile today!

“Saturday Afternoon” Hair at the Golden Globes 2015

This past Sunday night we watched the Hollywood Foreign Press bring all the celebrities together to award the best in TV and film. Its considered a precursor to the Oscars and sometimes forecasts this years winners.

The Golden Globes usually help us hair stylists to see how fashion’s trends then and now come together in an elegant affair and on the red carpet. It can also help us steer our clients towards newer styles all year long. Here we review what we saw!

Below you will see examples of medium, medium long and long length hair in one of  the signature styles of the night that we call,”Saturday Afternoon.” It looks done but not over done and would be a great and versatile “day into night” style for the everywoman. It incorporates an off center part with a soft and relaxed swoop of the front and soft, extra loose waves .You can achieve this by using a mousse like Body Builder by Kevin Murphy when blow drying roots for lift with your fingers. With Anti-Gravity as a foundation blow dried into the mid shaft to ends, use a medium heat curling iron with 1.5″ barrel. Curl horizontally in large sections  and release. Brush the curls  with a cushion brush once cooled and spray with a flexible hairspray.

naomiAmy_Adamsreese  Unfortunately, we did not see a lot of brave hairstyles at this awards show. Maybe they are saving their A-game for the Oscars. Regardless, we found it difficult to be inspired by any other looks because of how simple they were. They did not take ANY style risks. Many women parted their hair in the middle with predictable beach waves (example: Gwyneth Paltrow ) or slicked the middle parted hair into a bun or ponytail (example: Kate Hudson). Katie Holmes even donned a super long extensions ponytail that didn’t quite satisfy as a hairstyle. (see all below)

gwynethkatekatie

We were inspired by two showings on the red carpet, do not fret! We are a big fan of reinventing the classic bob as it can be classed up or funked up. Rosemund Pike of “Gone Girl,” and Zosia Mamet of, “Girls,” (seen below) both reinterpreted the bob for this event. Rosemund opted for an inverted angle, sleek  traight texture and deeply parted on the side. It says chic and sophisticated and abandons the standard long hair known so well to the celebrity set. Zosia took the interpretation to color and sported a unique “grey beige” tone that refines the overtoned smoky blond look into a cultivated style.  She then combined it with a little “Saturday Afternoon” wave on the ends and created an accessible style with some funk. A great product to style hair with to achieve this look while also conditioning your hair simultaneously is Young.Again by Kevin Murphy. Its a weightless leave-in treatment oil infused with Immortelle to counteract the oxidization and ageing process.

rosemundmamet

Although we did not see any courageous moves now, we still look forward to the upcoming awards season. Maybe the stylists in Hollywood have some secrets in their back pocket for later we do not know about!

New Year’s Hair Secrets

lcupdopony

What items are necessary to creating amazing New Year’s Eve hair?

(whether you wear it up or down..)

Always start with dry, clean hair by making sure to shampoo 1-3X with a detoxing shampoo like Maxi Wash by Kevin Murphy followed with a little conditioning rinse on the ends. Any oils on your hair will weigh your hair down and may cause it to fall out/down more. You may use an oil free volumizer like Kevin Murphy’s Anti Gravity lotion or spray when blowdrying after washing. This type of product will help your hair to take the style as well as support it for enduring a long night of fun!

FOR LONGER HAIR:

  1. Fine toothed comb
  2. Bobby Pins
  3. High quality Hair Spray/Fixative (We use Working Spray by Alterna Caviar or Firm Hold Moroccan Oil Hairspray)
  4. Curling Iron (Preferrably 1-2″ in diameter)
  5. Boar bristle brush

curlset

Once your hair is prepped, start curling the hair into a set where you curl a 1-2″ section and set it with a clip or bobby pin. Curling towards the face will be more retro or vintage (1940’s-1960’s) and away from the face more modern (1970’s-now). Its always a best practice to mist the hair lightly with hairspray before and after curling. On finer hair, you can back comb the root to help the volume you create  This set acts like a base style for many types of looks once you the curls have cooled.

Whether you just want a bouncy blowout look, half up half down, a soft high ponytail with flipped ends, or a full on loose curl updo- this base style helps amp up your sexy vixen look for the New Year! Finger separate the curls once taken down and slowly brush the ‘do into shape. Quick Tip: Use the brush to tease in volume underneath the style in certain sections to give it soft volume. You can also use the curling iron freehand to help sculpt certain waves into staying put.  TRY: Twist the hair and curl with the iron to create messy, beach waves.

pompa

FOR SHORTER HAIR:

  1. Fine toothed comb
  2. Small to Medium Flat iron and/or curling iron
  3. Pomades (Night Rider or Easy Rider styling products by Kevin Murphy)
  4. Bobby pins (optional)
  5. Quality Hairspray (optional)

Just because you have shorter hair doesn’t mean you can’t fix it up pretty for that big party! Part your hair in a new spot, try some asymmetry or add volume by backcombing where you wouldn’t usually in a day to day situation. Embrace change! If your hair  is usually perfectly coiffed go for a messier do or slick it up if with Easy Rider if you are usually more laissez faire. Try a combed up pompadour that has height with Night Rider- the sticky matte texture makes funkier hairstyles fun but be warned! It gets tacky within 10 seconds so make sure you know what style you are headed for.

If your hair is more medium length, use the curling iron to make random curls and waves all over your head and then pin a couple back. TIP: Criss cross the bobby pins or hook them into a style to make them secure. Or brush out some curls for a loose wave retro look. Just make sure to spray with Working Spray when complete.

Use these GO TO tips tomorrow before you go out- or book with one of our experienced stylists! Check out their profiles to book NOW!
