How to Get Matt Smith’s Look from BBC’s Doctor Who

I’m a huge SciFi fan and one of my favorite shows is Doctor Who. The role of the main character, the time traveler enigmatically named The Doctor, is played by actor Matt Smith. Nearing the end of its fall season, Matt Smith returns to the role.

He has very long hair that is cut to give him not only long bangs, but a far left part. For the show he usually has it somewhat neater (though it always ends up a bit more messy by the end of the episode). This style would best be styled with our good friend, Kevin.Murphy Body.Builder. This volumizing mousse can have a tremendous effect on the hair.

First, part the hair with a deep part. Apply a small handful of the mousse into slightly damp hair. Then using a blowdryer and a Denman Brush, dry the roots of the hair away from the direction you will eventually want them to go. Do this section by section. Blowdry the rest of the hair straight. Brush the hair with some Alterna Caviar Working Hairspray and you have a nice clean style. For a messier style, use Kevin.Murphy Gritty.Business or Sticky.Business rather than hairspray.

This this is a great style for you? Do you have any question for me? Book your appointment with me at Emerson Salon, today!

Hair by Franz: Adam’s Haircut

Adam’s haircut was really fun to do. He came in with his hair bleached yellow all over and a bit longer all over. He also had a rat tail that he had been growing out for a while. We talked about what we wanted to do and decided that the sides and back needed to be cut shorter, while we left the rat tail and the top long.

This gave his haircut a great two-toned effect with his dirty blonde natural color and the yellow that remained in the top and the tail. Overall, this was a great cut for Adam’s more grungy style! For more of a textured look, we connected the shorter sides to the longer top and layered his tail. To add hold and emphasize that texture we used Kevin.Murphy Gritty.Business; the cherry on the grungy rocker sundae! This was a really fun haircut to perform.

Up and Coming

I styled rapper Katie Kate’s hair for her recent show at Capitol Hill’s Comet Tavern. I clipper cut one side of her head every three weeks to give her a dual look with one side short and one side longer, giving her the visual impact she needs to get noticed. I iron curled the longer side of her hair with Alterna Caviar Working spray around two four strand braids. Next, I bobby pinned up the shoulder length hair into a faux bob leaving one large wave/curl in the front. To finish I sprayed with Extra Hold by Alterna Caviar because the style needed to last for eight hours in addition to being able to endure a sweaty musical set in a small bar.

Coming up soon! Katie Kate will be performing LIVE on KEXP on September 24th, so listen for her hit “Tote Bag” from her upcoming album. We can’t wait!

Hair by Franz: Seth’s Cut and Color

I used Seth as a model a week or so ago. He came in with longer light blonde hair that was nice, but not entirely even. He hadn’t had a cut in a long time and was open for me doing anything. I really liked the idea of him staying lighter but I wanted to give hima little bit extra.

We started with his color and used a low strength bleach to lighten his hair a bit more and create a more even color. We then toned with a cooler toner to create a more white look to his hair. While we toned his hair, we feathered in some black on the ends of his left side, following his jawline.

Once the color was complete, we worked on his cut. I really liked the longer and shaggier look for him, but with some Capitol Hill edge to it. We cut his right side down to about an inch, short enough to be dramatically shorter, but long enough to style back with product. That was then blended up through to the longer hair in the back. We then cut layers into his hair to give him a bit more of a shaggy look.

For styling we used MoroccanOil to give the hair a little bit of moisture and protein from the chemical processing and heat styling that it had been exposed to in the past. It also helped the hair dry faster. Seth’s hair is pretty straight, so we used our flat iron to curl the down at the root and up on the ends to give the appearance of wavy hair. We then used Kevin.Murphy Night.Rider to hold the short side down and give hold and texture to the longer hair.

Fresh and New Musical Style

Are you looking for the next Seattle music and style icon? Look no further! One of my clients, Katie Kate, is a super talented songwriter, rapper, and sound engineer. She recently finished up an album that promises to transform her into a real force like her mainstream counterparts: M.I.A., Nicki MInaj and others. We can’t sample anything (yet!) but in anticipation of all the new attention she will get, Katie Kate gave me the opportunity to completely change her look.

272020_10150218092795732_366130840731_7183821_1503053_o 258244_10150218092705732_366130840731_7183816_26657_o 265336_10150218092460732_366130840731_7183804_1506123_o 256932_10150218092625732_366130840731_7183812_2516565_o

Katie Kate started out with extremely dense, wavy/curly hair past her shoulders that I have been trimming and thinning for the last couple years. For her new look, I started out with my Andis Master Clipper to get the bulk of the length off. Kate wanted to take her hair off in stages as this was a drastic change she had never tried but was excited to embrace! Then I used my Oster 76 Fast Feed clippers and “buzzed” off the one side to an extremely shorter length.

Kate decided she wanted a “cut out” pattern in the shorter side and decided upon a “sine wave” pattern. A sine wave is a sound wave with smooth, repetitive oscillation. Kate knows her stuff and this was a perfect opportunity for it to show up (literally) on her hair. I used my edge trimmers to create this effect by starting off with hair adhesive tape to get the crisp, horizontal line. Then I freehanded the fluid line with patience as the grain of hair can present challenges with creating a smooth line.

For the rest of the haircut I created an inverted (asymmetrical from back to front) long bob with thinned out ends and trimmed swoop bang.
To style: Apply MoroccanOil to towel dried hair and round brushed section by section from nape to top.
To Finish: Flat ironed the entire head from mid shaft to ends and lightly sprayed with Alterna Caviar Working Spray.

I am SO excited to hear Katie Kate’s entire album! You should be too!

Hair by Franz: Jer’s La Roux Inspired Haircut

jer

Jer’s haircut was really fun to do. After we consulted we decided that we needed to break away from the normal “shorter on the side longer on top” look that he had been toting for the past few years. We wanted something with a bit more edge, yet something that could be business professional when he went to work. His red hair reminded me of La Roux so we made him a shorter version of her haircut in the form of a faux hawk.

To achieve the look that we desired, we needed it to be much longer on top than it is on the sides. We choppped down his sides and back to a shorter length to accentuate the length on top. we then cut his Faux Hawk origination from the center of his crown to his left eye. This created that La Roux “peak” without the super long hair.

To style his hair we used Kevin.Murphy Body.Builder Voumizing Mouse and Kevin.Murphy Gritty.Business. We sprayed a little of the Body.Builder into my hands and distributed it throughout the top lengths. We the blowdried the hair up and to the left. trying to achieve as much volume as possible. Once the volume and direction was achieved we held and textured the style with Gritty.Business for a bit more of a rocker look with a pliable hold.

Hair by Franz: Lorena’s Cut and Curl

Lorena came in to get her hair cut by me last week. This was a really fun cut to do because I got to witness a dramatic change. Lorena has a lot of hair and she didn’t have a lot of layers. Combine these with the fact that she has curly hair naturally means that she had a huge amount of hair.

When we cut her hair, we cut her shortest layers to fall at her lips so to relieve a lot of weight and bulk and show off her natural texture a bit better. I wouldn’t recommend this for people with more straight hair or thinner heads of hair because it will more than likely remove too much hair and make it look even more thin.

When we curled her hair, we wanted to get her looking good for her trip to the beach. After we washer her with Alterna Bamboo Anti-Frizz shampoo and Conditioner, our products de jour were Kevin.Murphy Motion.Lotion, to fight frizz and enhance her curl, Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager, to protect her hair from the heat, and Kevin.Murphy Hair.Resort Spray to help give her curls a bit more of a beach texture.

When we curled her hair we left a few inches out of her roots and ends and just wrapped the hair down around an open curling iron in large horizontal sections. Once the hair was too hot to touch, we let the hair down and let it cool. Once the head was completed and cooled we broke up the curls with out fingers lightly and sprayed the Hair.Resort on the hair.

How to Look Your Best on the Wedding Day

Ah, wedding season is upon us! Some of you are getting married, some of you are participating in a wedding or some are going to be attending-but regardless of what role you play, you want to look your absolute best!

Here, I have shown some examples of simple, classic formal styles for weddings and some that get a little bit more creative. The range of styles is wide so I tell my brides to schedule a consultation a few weeks before the big day. Its always best to bring pictures of what you would like and not like as I can create a personalized look for you based on the elements you would like to include. No bad prom looking hair for you and my updos are built to last through sweat, tears and dancing!

I also recommend a bridal practice session ahead of time to trouble shoot any problems in the style. It eases your mind and helps me to plan out the best layout for the hair to maximize aesthetics for pictures as well as making sure the style stays all day into night!

Here is our pricing structure for formal styling:
-Bridal practice session: $40 (can include a shampoo/ blowout after)
-Bridal styling: $100-$120 (price varies based on length or density)

(Group discount: More than 3 people (including the bride): bridal $85-$95, others in group $45)

Hair by Franz: Rachael’s New Rockin’ Do

The other day i did my friend Rachael’s hair. She came in with a picture of Haley Williams from Paramore and her hair that she had been cutting herself to one length. The Determination?: We needed layers! The whole look is supposed to emphasize texture that she had been lacking previously. We chose to cut her hair with a razor to have a more messy look. We brought the layers in the back very high to have as much texture and movement as possible. We then brought it through to have shorter layers in the front so as to now loose too much weight in the front.

When we styled her hair, we prepped it with Kevin.Murphy Hair.Resort to aid in speeding up blow drying and helping give a more beachy messy texture. Once dry we flat ironed the hair using Kevin.Muprhy Damage.Manager to protect the hair from the thermal damage and finished up with Kevin.Muprhy Texture.Master to emphasize the punky texture we had just given her.

Hair by Franz: Jen’s Cut and Color

Jen came in to me the other week and we cut an colored her hair. She had coppery red hair that had faded a lot. Her hair was looking somewhat gold. but we knew we wanted to stay red, just touch up her new growth and re-establish a color on her ends. We decided to go with a light golden copper blond color. We had to wrap her feathers (which you can’t really see in the picture) in tin foil to avoid coloring them.

As for her Cut and Style we kept her length and touched up her layers to just keep everything nice and neat. To style her we used Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity at her roots to add volume to her do and then round-brush curled her ends with Hair.Resort for added hold to the curl. The end result was a soft wave that looks beautifully soft and subtle.
