At Home Hair Treatments

Here at Emerson, we love our product lines and know that professional, salon-grade products are always the top of the line best option for you hair. But that’s no reason not to also take advantage of the great hair products you probably have stashed right in your kitchen! Check out this collection of the easiest and best home remedies and treatments for your hair.

Product removal;

Feeling some buildup in your hair from cheap shampoos or lots of product? Try this easy vinegar rinse that will remove residue from the hair and keep it balanced. Mix 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with three cups of water, and pour it over your hair as a final rinse. You can also try mixing baking soda into your shampoo for a deep thorough clean. (Note: If you find that you’ve got too much build up for these at-home remedies to handle, try Kevin Murphy’s Maxi Wash. Possibly the best invention ever.)

Color:

Looking to boost your color? Here are two easy treatments you can do to either lighten it up or keep your dark strands looking rich and bold.

To help the sun lighten up your hair, mix three parts lemon juice with one part water and spritz it on your hair before going into the sun.

To achieve and maintain a rich dark color, try making a walnut treatment that will boost up your brown and leave it look lustrous. Crush 8-10 walnuts (with the shells) and mix with 8 oz of boiling water. Let it cool, strain out the shells, and keep it refrigerated in a spray bottle, where you can put it on your hair weekly to maintain your color.

Treatments:

There are loads of great conditioning and strengthening treatments that are easy to do for your hair. Try putting mayonnaise (about a half a cup) in your hair to strengthen it (make sure it’s all natural and that you rise it thoroughly). Coconut oil is also renowned for adding shine and protecting hair from the effects of aging; apply it to your hair and let it sit overnight before rinsing it out (wrap your head in saran wrap to protect your pillows)

Also try a great moisturizing mix of avocado and egg yolk. Mix a small mashed avocado with an egg yolk and let it sit in your hair for fifteen minutes before rising and shampooing as usual.

And our favorite surprise treatment? Beer! No really, true story. Take a bottle of warm, flat beer with you in the shower and rise with it after shampooing. It will add intense shine and volume.

Other Tips:

Running late and have to skip the shower, but have oily roots? Use cornstarch as a dry shampoo; it will soak up oil at the roots and leave hair looking clean and shiny.

Salt is a fun beach texturizer. Adding a tablespoon of salt with four oz of water will make a spray that, when spritzed on wet hair after a shower and let air dry, will create a wavy, volumized beach look. You’ll probably want to skip this one if you have naturally dry hair. (Try Kevin Murphy’s Hair Resort for a texturizer that is easier on drier hair)

We hope you find these treatments fun and helpful! As always, if you have any questions about your hair or what products you should be using, feel free to give us a call or stop by, and our stylists will be more than happy to answer your questions!

10 Tips For Getting A Great Haircut Out Of Your Stylist

katie-holmes-haircut

At Emerson Salon we know that one of the biggest challenges with visiting a new stylist is getting a fantastic haircut that you love and makes you look and feel amazing. Usually this challenge comes not from the lack of skill of the stylist, but rather from a breakdown in the communication between the customer and the stylist. Not only do the stylist and customer need to overcome the natural difficulties of communicating between people who often come from very different backgrounds, but the stylist is highly trained with a technical and specific vocabulary while the customer may have a hard time putting what he or she is thinking in the right words. This gap in the vocabulary between you and your stylist is why you need to be extra sure that the stylist understands what you are saying before beginning on the appointment.

  1. Be Prepared – Spend some time thinking about your haircut before going to the salon. Decide if you have a specific cut that you are looking for or would like the stylist to recommend something. This decision is key and should be the first thing you tell the stylist because it will determine the direction of the pre-cut consultation. The better idea you have of what you would like your hair to look like the easier it will be for the stylist to get on the same page and provide you with the perfect cut.

Spend some time online looking at fashion websites, mopshots.com, or our blog to get an idea of different possibilities for hair styles. Print out the pictures you like and bring them to your appointment to show the stylist. I recommend writing on the back of the picture the URL of the image (in case the stylist needs a better look at it) and what specifically you like about the hair cut.

Some salons (like ours) will let you email in pictures in advance and store them for you until your appointment. This is a very handy way of ensuring you will be prepared for your appointment.

  2. Be Specific – Once you know what you want in your hair cut, be as specific as possible in explaining it to the stylist. Try telling the stylist what you want out of your haircut in several different ways. Be sure to point out what specifically is most important to you in your haircut (i.e. the bangs, texture, the neck line, etc) so they know where to focus their time and efforts. Bringing multiple pictures is a great way to get the dialog flowing, because it gives you and the stylist an opportunity to talk about what you do like from different pictures and what you do not like.

  3. mens-hairstyles-picture-001

  4. Say What You Don’t Want – Almost as important as saying what you want in a haircut is being clear about what you do not like. One of the key enemies that you are fighting in your consultation is an assumption by the stylist about what you want. Saying what you don’t like will often unseat any assumptions the stylist might have made and force them to reassess the situation. You may think that no one would consider doing a razor cut on your hair, but unless you say it, that might be exactly what the stylist is thinking. Cover your bases and say what you don’t want, even if it seems ridiculous. You will be happy when you don’t get what you already know you don’t want. Other common dislikes include blending shears, straight bangs, blocked off neck lines, etc.

  5. History Matters – One of the most common mistakes made by a customer going into a haircut or coloring appointment is neglecting to catch the stylist up on your hair history. This is really important in helping the stylist to understand the specific needs of your situation. Key details to mention include the length of time since your last hair cut, any color or other chemicals that have been applied to the hair, and what styling products you use. Almost any type of hair can be handled by a trained stylist, but they need to know what they are dealing with before they begin the service so be thorough in getting your stylist up to speed.

  6. Reese+Witherspoon+Haircut

  7. Work Matters – Talk to your stylist about your profession and work environment. Especially if you are asking your stylist to provide you with a recommendation for a haircut, this information is important. You want a haircut that will be stylish and make you look great, but also be appropriate for your work environment. A great haircut for a new associate at a conservative law firm may not be the same as what a stylist would recommend for a barista at a trendy coffee shop.

  8. Say It Back To Me – After you feel like you’ve made yourself very clear and the stylist has all the relevant information that they need to provide you with just the right haircut. Have them repeat it back to you. This is a great way to assess what the stylist actually heard and understood. Often you will be surprised and how the stylist synthesized all the information you just unloaded on them. If it comes back perfect then you know you are ready to begin the appointment, if not then this will help you zero in on exactly where the stylist is misunderstanding you.

  9. Stay in Control – One common mistake made is to allow the stylist to begin cutting your hair before they understand what you are looking for. Remember you are in control and don’t be afraid to tell the stylist to stop. If you are not confident that the stylist and you are on the same page yet, don’t let them start and keep the conversation flowing.

  10. Halle+Berry+Hosts+Evening+Awareness+Red+Carpet+wtpwsI4wE-Vl

  11. Ask for Just a Consultation – If you are planning to make a big change to your hairstyle (like cutting off ten inches or drastically changing your hair color), don’t be afraid to schedule just a consultation. Most stylists are happy to sit with you and talk about your hair and what you are hoping to accomplish. This separation of time between your consultation and the cut will give you an opportunity to learn from the stylist but give you still an opportunity to consider if this is really what you want to do. Cutting off a lot of hair can be a big decision and once its off, its hard to get it back so be sure to take the time to be sure that this is what you want to do.

  12. Learn from Mistakes – Lets face it, from time to time everyone will get a bad haircut. While these tips are designed to minimize the likelihood of that happening, there will be times where the hair cut did not turn out exactly the way you wanted it. The natural reaction in this situation is to get angry, write of a negative review of your stylist, and begin searching for a new salon where they actually know what they are doing. This may make you feel better, but unfortunately it doesn’t leave you any better prepared for your next hair appointment. Instead, take this time to learn what happened and make sure it never happens again. Talk to your stylist and be specific about what you don’t like about the haircut. Often the stylist will be able to provide technical terms for what you don’t like, which you can write down and keep ready to explain to all future haircut appointments. With this information in your pocket you will now be able to ensure you never get this haircut again.

  13. Take A Photo – Do you love the haircut you just got? If so, then the most important thing you can do is ask your stylist to take a picture. Even if you have seen your stylist for years and they know your hair inside and out, its a good practice to keep a picture of the haircut you want. A good stylist will take notes on the services they performed for you, but they also see hundreds of customers between your appointments and it can be hard for them to remember exactly what they did on the previous appointment. Keeping a picture of your rockstar haircut will often provide the stylist exactly what they need to make you look amazing again and again.

And there you have it 10 awesome tips from our team here at Emerson Salon. If you follow these simple rules you will go a long ways towards taking control of your hair styling trip and ensure your stylist is always able to provide you with the perfect hair cut!

Ask a Stylist-Growing Out Short Cuts

Kat asks:

“About a year ago, in what was either a moment of creative genius or temporary insanity, I took a pair of scissors to my long curly hair and lopped it all off (al la Jean Seberg). The result was remarkably successful, and I’ve been loving the look for a while, but I’m definitely ready to start growing my hair back out. This is easier said than done- I have thick, dark, curly hair that is generally at its best very long, or so short that the curl doesn’t exist. My childhood photos are full of painful, mushroom-shaped examples of what I’m afraid is in store for me now. Any tips on how to survive the era of ill-mannered grow-out hair before me?”

Wow Kat, good for you!! Here’s what our stylists thought:

Lancer says:

“Congratulations on your DIY cut! I suggest making an appointment for a consultation so that your stylist can see your hair in person and determine what service you need for now. If it hasn’t been cut in a very long time, a deep conditioning treatment can do wonders in reviving your hair’s moisture balance as well as helping your grown out ends look better.

I have worked with many clients who are growing their hair out. Sometimes they need their layers reshaped so that the hair doesn’t stick out from the head in a triangular shape. Other times their hair just needs trimmed or texturized in the meantime.

Good luck with your decision and patience is key to growing out curly hair!”

Ellen says:

“Growing out your hair from such an extreme is hard for anyone, but to make matters worse you are dealing with thick curly hair! My suggestion would be to use Morrocon Oil Intense Curl Cream to hydrate and control the curl. To manage the ugly grow out process come in and get it routinely cut. Since you have thick hair it needs to be textured to lay better and to make your life easier while growing it out. Routine trimming will help it have a shape other then the dreaded mushroom top!”

Rusty says:

“I would consider your spontaneity to be a stroke of genius. Unfortunately, strokes of genius can have their setbacks. Growing your hair will be challenging. And yes, you’re going to have those stages where you’d rather pull it out than grow it out, but be very patient. This is an issue that time will definitely cure. You should see your favorite stylist or come into Emerson Salon, sit down with your stylist and have a serious conversation about what to expect so you can prepare yourself for the changes to come. Consultations are always complimentary!

Good luck with your hair. By the way, I bet the short hair was really cute and fun!”

Good luck Kat! Feel free to stop by and make an appointment for a consultation to see what the Emerson team can do for you. Stay tuned for more Ask A Stylist posts coming up!

Ask a Stylist-Chemical Straightening

Arianna asked our stylists:

“I have really curly hair and I am thinking about getting it permanently straightened for awhile. What are the risks of doing this? Will it wreck my hair? What else should I know before going ahead with it?”

Good question Arianna! Here’s what our stylists have to say.

Lancer says,

“Permanent hair straightening will change your hair texture completely. The only way to remove it is to have the straightened lengths of your hair cut off. A better option for you would be the Keratin Smoothing treatment. This treatment can be varied to give a less-than-permanent smoothness to your hair. If you choose this route, you will still have to flat iron your hair to get it completely straight.

Hair that has been chemically altered needs special care. You must use professional hair care products that your stylist recommends for your at-home maintenance. Otherwise, your service that you paid for cannot be guaranteed, and straightened hair (whether done with a straightening, smoothing, and.or flat ironing treatment) is very different hair and needs extra care.

Potential risks include breakage if the treatment isn’t done correctly. Seek out a salon that does these treatments on a regular basis and ask about a stylist’s certification and credentials first. Also, if your hair is currently colored, permed, highlighted, or bleached, it may have too poor of porosity to accept another chemical treatment, though professional straightening treatments are available for those hair types.

Finally, the treatment is a bit costly and time-intensive. Do your research, have a thorough consultation with your stylist before proceeding, and then you can decide if it is right for you!”

Thanks for your question Arianna! Hope this helped!

Summer Hair: Looking Beautiful in the Sun and Heat

image

Pretty soon spring will turn into golden summer here in Seattle. We have earned our extended days of sun with the amount of rain and cold we’ve received lately!! So now it is time to think about how to revamp hair color and style your hair for warmer temperatures.

To start, one great approach is adding highlights and refreshing faded color to get geared up for summer. If you want softness and an overall lighter color we think a super blended foiling technique on the upper portion of the hair creates a great effect that is both striking and natural. The lighter pieces can be finely woven strategically into the hair and placed diagonally to avoid the look of “little lines” of hair color. We recommend consulting an Emerson Salon stylist to find out how we can best add dimension to your hair color.

If a bolder and brigher effect is desired we recommend a bleach balayage that lifts a minimum of 2 -3 levels. This painting technique diffuses the color saturation at the root and saturates towards the mid-ends. Then the hair can be toned to a soft beige blond, medium brown color, etc depending on preference and individual coloring. Faded darker hair color can be enriched with a gold based color that will increase shine and reflectivity. We recommend the Beige Blonde series from Italy Hairfashion because it adds depth without overly darkening the hair. An added bonus to using this color line is the use of plant ingredients with built in UV protection (bisabolo, helianthus annus and more.)

oilbottle

Eventually, trips to the lake and beach areas will be a high priority in the summer. Whether you are doing outdoor sports or just soaking in some rays, protecting your hair from the harmful UV rays of the sun will be key to retaining your hair’s moisture and manageability. The drier the hair the frizzier it can become in addition to fading color. To protect your hair during these activities, try using Moroccan Oil before going in the sun. Consider it sunblock for your hair! Its chock full of UV inhibitors and antioxidants and also makes the hair very soft and shiny.

1309

In the warmer temperatures, no one wants to be blow drying when they are already hot and sweaty. A great alternative is using Kevin Murphy’s Hair Resort on damp hair and let it air dry. It creates a beachy wave texture even on the most stubborn straight hair! Its great to come home from the beach, take a shower and throw it in your hair and go about your day. Plus, loose waves are all the rage and mean less work for you.

We look forward to summer and helping our clients freshen their look for the season. Empower yourself and protect your hairstyle while enjoying Seattle’s rays of light!

Quick Fixes for Common Hair Issues

Life happens and we don’t always have time to fuss with our hair as much as we’d like. To most of us, looking good and feeling good is important and all of us have some kind of issue with our hair. Whether it is limp, dull, frizzy, or just a little lack luster from time to time, I have some simple solutions for the girl/guy on the go.

-1

Problem – You’ve woken up late and your hair is looking a little flat, but you don’t have time to start styling it from scratch. Solution – Membrane Gas by Fudge. This will give texture and volume to the limpest of hair. Use it as a hairspray for hold or for texture by manipulating the hair with your fingers while applying. The awesome thing about this product is that it actually has “memory,” meaning you can brush it out and rework the hair to your desired shape simply by applying a little more. Big hair, great texture and flexible hold. What more could you ask for?

-3

Problem – You’ve recently had a chemical service on your hair and it is just looking a little dry and dull. Washing it too much doesn’t do much but dry it out more, over-conditioning leaves it oily and leaving it alone drives you crazy. Solution – Moroccan Oil Glimmer Shine Spray. Apply to dry, dull hair to bring out the shine and shimmer. It is infused with argan oil and UV filters to protect from further damage do to the elements. This light weight shine is easy to use and long lasting.

-4

Problem – Curly hair that is frizzy due to weather or just natural texture. Solution – Alterna’s Shaping Balm. When applying this to dry hair it acts as an anti-humectant. It will smooth out any frizz and leave pliable, shiny curls. Plus, Alterna products are all paraben and gluten free.

Whatever your specific hair issues, there is almost certainly a solution out there. For more helpful tips, come on in and see one of our stylists here at Emerson!

Keep Your Hair Looking Fly While You Fly

Fresh Hair While Traveling

Fresh Hair While Traveling

Spring is the time of year when business travel and leisure travel are both at their height. Conventions, conferences, vacations, weddings, family visits all bring a certain amount of preparation when packing to ensure you have all the items you need without overloading your suitcase. Most airlines are starting to charge for oversized or very heavy bags so keeping things minimized is key. At Emerson Salon, we regularly give jetsetters recommendations on items that won’t bulge the duffel bag or budget during travel.

The good news is small bags and looking great are necessarially mutually exclusive, here are some great tips on how to get the most out of your hair with minimal tools:

  • Kevin Murphy Jetpacks: These adorable travel packs of Kevin Murphy products allow you to get your favorite shampoo, conditioner, body lotion and hair products on the go. This is definitely an essential part of any traveler’s emergency kit!
  • Emergency Blowdryer: While most hotels these days keep a blow dryer on site, not all do and even those that have a “blow dryer” don’t always work so we recommend bringing your own dryer for maximum effect. You can get a very manageable foldable travel sized dryer at most drugstores. Look for wattage of between 1000-1500 and many have retractable cords making packing even easier. You can also find travel sized 3″ flat irons for those quick hair touchups between events.
  • Moroccan Oil: Trying to manage thick or fine wavy/curly hair across different climates and conditions can be a major pain, try the 25ml trial size of Moroccan Oil. This handy product helps to impart shine, control frizz, and contains conditioning properties to protect the hair during heat styling. It does quite a lot for such a small package and uses the natural properties of argan oil to keep your hair healthy and going strong.
  • Fresh Hair: Rushing between events? Trying to maximize your time on the beach before heading in to town? If you aren’t able to get back to the hotel to touch up your hair, try Fresh Hair as a way to refresh and revitalize on the go. With a few quick sprays, this handy product will dissolve excess oils and smells after a long day in hot temperatures or long meetings. An absolute must for any beach bag or conference tote!
  • Styling Tools: A few tools are absolutely vital for your styling needs, these are our recommendations on what to pack: make sure to bring a large comb (with fine and wide set teeth), a medium sized round brush (thermal or boar bristle), a few clips, hair elastics or barettes, and one or two fancy pieces of hair jewelry for more formal outings.
  • Hair Spray: Traveling with hairspray can be difficult, so if you decide to bring hair spray, we recommend keeping it to a minimum. Look for something versatile like Working Spray by Alterna which can meet many of your styling needs with one product. TIP: When packing your hair spray, use some tape to secure the cap onto the hairspray can. This prevents it from going off in your luggage when jostled about in the plane or at baggage claim.
  • For guys on the go: Use a medium hold texturizer like Alterna’s Sheer Pomade. It can provide a variety of looks from sleek and sculpted to messy and fun all in one product.

And remember, the last thing you want to do is stress about your hair when you are out of town. So be organized and plan ahead and your tresses will be as happy as you are when you are on the go! Bon Voyage!

Looking Good While Getting In Shape

-1

So it’s mid February already and hopefully not all of you have given up on your New Year’s resolutions yet. For many, I’m sure getting in shape was at the top of your list and finding time to get to the gym can be difficult. The best thing to do is maximize your time while you are there. To do this, start by making yourself feel good about how you look when going to the gym. This may sound ridiculous, but I am a firm believer that you will work harder when you aren’t worried about looking frumpy or just plain unattractive. I’m not saying it’s a fashion show, but the right gym clothes, hair and makeup will make all the difference.

For starters, wear clothes that fit and compliment your shape. An oversized t-shirt can actually make you look heavier rather than camouflaging your belly. Try a more fitted shirt that gives definition to your waist. Also feel free to play with colors. Try and find something in a color that compliments your skin tone. As far as pants go, I would keep the colors simple – black, grey and darker colors generally work best on the bottom. But don’t forget to wear a pair that is in your size. Baggy pants are just as unflattering as an oversized tee. Don’t forget a sports bra either. These are so important and can make all the difference in the world. A comfy, well fitted sports bra will help keep your focus on your workout and not how many people are watching your “bounce.”

-2

As far as makeup is concerned, I like to use the acronym KIS – Keep It Simple. A light foundation is best. Preferably water based to help prevent clogged pores. Oil and sweat are not a pretty combo. I really like to use a tinted foundation, it won’t run and looks natural. You can also wear a little blush. I try not to do too much only because I’m fair and tend to blush all on my own when I work out. Add a little waterproof mascara and you’re ready to go. Ladies, please no smoky eyes at the gym. This is just a little silly.

Whether you have long or short hair, pull it back. If you need a few pins or a head band, go for it. Keep that hair away from your face, especially if you use a lot of product. Sweaty, matted hair is a distraction and not cute to say the least.

Good Luck!!!

Lindsey Vonn Goes to the Olympics

57438865

Lindsey Vonn is an alpine skier on the U.S. Ski Team heading into the Olympics 2010. As the most decorated female US alpine skiier of all time, there is a lot of speculation about her chances in the upcoming games. This NY Times article speculates that Lindsey could be on track to bring in five gold medals this year, to which she replied “Five gold medals? Well, it’s possible. But I haven’t won even one Olympic medal yet. I’d like to win the first one and let’s see from there.”

Her love of skiing began very early on in life, she was on skies at the young age of 3! With 31 World Cup wins in four disciplines (Super G, downhill, slalom and super combined) as well as two World Championship gold medals, she has become the most successful female American skier in World Cup history. Did I mention that she’s only 25 years old?

ea89db9f-6891-479b-a558-73e1bc5efc6f.widec

In addition to being the best American female skier ever, Lindsey is also very easy on the eyes. Whether she’s on or off the slopes, Lindsey always manages to look her best, playing up her natural beauty. Achieving those tousled, beachy waves is easy! After washing hair and towel-drying, apply Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion to enhance natural waves. Follow by either air-drying the hair or diffusing it. To create soft waves for naturally straight hair, apply Alterna Caviar Anti Aging Color Hold Mousse to damp hair. Follow by using a medium (2 inch) round brush while blow-drying the hair. To complete the look, use Alterna Caviar Anti Aging Color Hold Working Hair Spray.
