I have straightened and colored hair and am getting hair breakage. What should I do?

If you are coloring and straightening your own hair at home and it is breaking, stop!

  • The home coloring and straightening kits on the market use very harsh chemicals, unlike professional-grade hair colors and straighteners.
  • Both hair color and straighteners chemically alter the composition of hair. They both change the bonds that hair is made up of.

Here is an example of straightened, color treated hair—>

Coarser hair textures can take a bit more chemical alteration because the strands of the hairs themselves are stronger.

<----Here is an example of broken colored and straightened hair

If your hair is breaking from having two chemical processes on your hair, and is not breaking because you are putting it into a ponytail or wearing clips in it, then there are some things you can do!

Make an appointment with a hair professional for a consultation.

A good hair professional will recommend a salon reconditioning treatment first off, to restore some of your hair’s elasticity, moisture and protein balance, and overall hair health.

  • It is advisable to pick one process over another in the event that your hair cannot handle two chemical processes. Which is more important? Covering gray or having a funky color? Or taming unruly curls?
  • There are alternate methods to wearing one’s hair straighter that don’t involve a chemical process, Yes, they take more time but we all have choices to make regarding our health.
  • Straight, sleek gray hair or natural hair can look great when taken care of, and colorful curly hair that is shiny and tamed looks amazing as well!
  • If you have tried everything and are committed to having straight and color treated hair, then wait at least two weeks between coloring and straightening your hair. After a week has passed after the first service, get a conditioning treatment done in the salon, to help strengthen and prepare your hair for the next chemical service.

Here is an example of hair colored and straightened in a salon—>

In the salon, we have more resources available, color-wise, that will not damage your hair. Depending on your desired color result and the strength of the straightener used on your hair (we can usually tell from looking at your natural color and assessing your hair’s level of porosity), we will customize a hair color formulation for you that will be less damaging to your hair.

Long Hair Is Sexiest – Right?

That is a difficult question to answer, both personally and as a hair stylist.

Long Hair can be sexy, on the right person, and hair is used both as a symbol of power and as a symbol of control, and both power and control are decidedly sexy!

When is long hair sexy? Long hair is sexy when the wearer views their long locks as sexy. Sexy is all about confidence. Long hair admirers find long hair sexy; it is a matter of preference.

The sexiest long hair is healthy, shiny, moves freely, is soft, and without split ends.

People are attracted to healthy looking people biologically, because healthy people are desired for their good genes, which are desirable for reproduction. Even for those who don’t want children, this biological urge exists.

Long hair frames the face, like a pretty picture, without overpowering it, and accentuates the person without BEING the person.

Long hair can be flipped, played with, brushed, shampooed luxuriously; it can be styled or unstyled. Long hair looks range from straight, shiny and sleek, to messy, tousled, and loose. It can be pinned up into an elegant or fun updo, or sleeked back into a severe ponytail or be worn sleek with a severe geometric part. There are many options.

Long hair is seen as more natural, untamed, wild, effortless; a symbol of freedom, or anarchy to some.

Long hair is feminine; a source of feminine power. Even on men, long hair is seen as a symbol of power, or wild abandon. Take Samson, for example. His long hair was his power; when his hair was cut off, his strength left.

Women who leave a relationship sometimes cut off all their hair, especially if they feel that they kept it long for their men. Wanting a fresh start in life, they cut off their locks to try and erase the years of a bad relationship. Others will change their hair color instead.

Long hair can also be decidedly un-sexy.

  • Some long hair lovers don’t care how good the long hair looks; just that it IS long.
  • Equally dangerous are long hair wearers who don’t take care of their long hair.

Hair that grows out as wide as it is long is probably not going to have movement, and hair that isn’t conditioned may be harsh to the touch or it may look like you put your head into a light socket.

  • Hair that hasn’t been cut in a year is likely to have many broken ends and it also has lost its shape.
  • Heavy long hair can give the wearer headaches and the scalp may not be getting air to it, resulting in ill scalp health.

So if your going to sport some long hair make sure to keep it conditioned, healthy and with out split ends.

Protein: What is it and Why Is It Good For My Hair?

Jessica Biel

Protein is not just for body builders. Protein is amino acids that provide structure and strength to your hair. 70% of your hair is essentially protein so naturally a good protein diet means healthy hair. That Frizzy Hair that you wake up with in the morning is many times caused by the lack of protein. As the Hairlicious blog points out, protein is especially important if you have relaxed hair. Hair relaxers essentially strip the protein out of your hair. Thin hair and weak/brittle hair is another good indication that you might need more protein in your diet.

Here are some foods high in protein

  • Chicken
  • Red Meat
  • Milk

For vegetarians try:

  • Soy Beans
  • Brown Shortl-Grain Rice
  • Nuts
  • Veggies

Always remember that balance is key. If you over dose on Protein it can be just as harmful to your hair.

Six Resolutions to Keep in 2009

Reading about BellaSugar’s top 6 resolutions inspired me to to come up with our own top resolutions. Here are our top 3:

  1. Get more sleep. It’s not called beauty sleep for nothin’. Aim to get seven or eight hours of sleep each night, and you’ll see those puffy under-eye circles fade before you know it.
  2. Eat more vegetables. To keep your skin looking as healthy and youthful as possible, load up on antioxidant-rich vegetables and fruits. Eat them raw to enjoy the most nutrition, or saute vegetables in a bit of olive oil — which Dr. Murad recommends for healthy skin.
  3. Replace soda with water. The jury is out on whether drinking water does anything for your skin, but it’s a healthier choice than soda. And if you need a little flavor, try green tea, whose antioxidants can help.

You can read the complete six here

Flat, limp hair?

Need Volume?
Many of my clients want to get up in the morning, shampoo their hair, put a styling product in their hair, leave their dwellings, let their hair dry and look fuller. Sorry but this is just not realistic.

We stylists don’t just play around with hair products like we played with glue and paint when we were kids. What we do involves art, technique, and science.

Health
Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition, is key.

Styling
Styling products will temporarily give you volume by coating, or filling, your hair strands, giving it structure. Layers and texture allow your hairs to work together better with products, as well as giving your hair more stiffness and more lift. Don’t blow your hair out smooth! Your hair needs all the help it can get. Simply apply a small dab of a volumizing product recommended to you by your stylist into your hand. Emulsify it with both hands, rub it onto your scalp first, for lift at the scalp, then finger comb it through your ends for added strength to your strands. Blow dry your hair messy, from the roots out, making sure your roots are dry. This should take no longer than 5 minutes. Finish with a cool dryer setting to lock in your style. Use a hair spray that is formulated for your hair to set your style.

Hair Don’t's
Don’t restrain your strands with a rubber band or ponytail holder; it loses what little elasticity it has when your hair can’t bounce back and forth. Please keep your hands out of your hair! Heat and oils will flatten your hair down!
