The Pros and Cons of Ombre Highlights

In all the gossip and fashion magazines we have been seeing a real trend towards “ombre” highlighted hair. Ombre is a french term meaning,”shaded.” In terms of haircolor, it is the slow melting effect of a darker shade gradually getting lighter towards the ends until the entire ends region is the brightest haircolor on the head.

We have seen this trend show up on Lauren Conrad, Jennifer Lopez, Drew Barrymow and now, everyday Seattle gals who come in to Emerson Salon! Here, we advise you on how to have realistic expectations of what getting “ombre” will entail so you can make an informed decision before plunging into a new look.

Pros of Ombre Highlights:

This application does not require a lot of regular color maintenance services. Generally, the darkest shade is within 1-2 levels of the natural hair shade and helps to buffer any growout demarcation line. Once the ombre is achieved, you might only need to schedule regular trims, deep conditioning and a toner for the ends.

If you take care of your hair, it can be absolutely gorgeous! It is soft, modern and looks good with browns and auburns or brown and blonds, or beiges and platinum blonds. Make sure your stylist works within a color palette that works with your skin and eye tones. The ombre looks good curled, flat ironed or beach waved as long as you use a nourishing protectant like Kendi Oil by Alterna Bamboo. It is a miracle worker for split ends and adds shine.

Ombre is becoming ripe for experimentation. We’ve seen Drew Barrymore do a reverse ombre with blond roots- midshaft and black ends. Lauren Conrad just did a ponytail dipped in pink. If you can, think outside the box and make yours especially you!

Cons of Ombre Highlights:

In order to achieve the ultra light blond on the ends, most hair will have to be bleached unless the hair is naturally a medium blond or lighter. Bleaching can cause major damage to the hair as it creates explosions within the hair structure that blows the hair shaft and cuticle layers apart. This damage is permanent. It can be colored over but the damage lives in that hair until it is cut out. IMPORTANT: If you switch back and forth between ultra light, to darker, to ultra light, etc you will get breakage. This means loss of fullness and/or length. The longer the hair and the more checkered the chemical history, the more likely the hair is to break or become a gummy mush that can’t be styled or colored. So be careful what you ask for!

The service can use a lot of bleach and a lot of color and depending on your type of hair, its history, and the desired result this can mean a service that ranges from $100 to more of a color correction that can go upwards of $200-250+.

Once highlighted, it can be problematic to add pigment to the ultra light damaged ends. This also can turn into a color correction if the hair needs to be “filled” or stepped down to the desired darker shade. We recommend committing to an application of ombre for a minimum of 3-6 months with regular trims to maintain the least breakage. That way, you get the trend and bang for your buck.

You will need appropriate support products and appointments to repair some of the damage and keep the color looking its best. A great deep conditioner is the Restorative Mask by Moroccan Oil to be used once or twice a week. Its has moisture and protein that can be applied to damp hair for 15-20 minutes at home. Also, use a great shampoo and conditioner line like Luminous Shine by Alterna that is color safe, sulfate free and eco certified.

Always bring a picture of what you think you want your desired result will look like but always be somewhat flexible due to hair type and hair condition. Your stylist will review what the game plan will be to achieve that look and whether that works within your budget for the service, products and maintenance.

These fashion trends can be so fun to play with but always make an educated decision before you color- Hair is your everyday accessory- make sure it always looks and feels its best!

Kylie Minogue’s Iconic Hair

minougguuee

Kylie Minogue is a pop icon not only in Australia (her home country) but all over the world. She has been steadily touring and producing great dance albums ever since her first single, Locomotion, hit #1 on the charts in 1988. She is most recently known for her popular songs Come Into My World, Fever, and Can’t Get You Out of My Head. She has won many music and video awards in Britain and Australia. Ironically, Kylie originally started out as a young teen actress in the Australian soap opera, Neighbors, and has since starred as the Green Absinth Fairy in Baz Lurhmann’s Moulin Rouge musical movie.

Now, Kylie has teamed up with Madonna’s producer, Stuart Price, for her 11th studio album, Aphrodite. It releases sometime in June, but we’ve already heard her first single, All The Lovers, and we love it! The single is a fresh take on pop rhythms and reminds us of Little Boots recent synth pop work.

Kylie recently appeared in a spread for Spanish Vogue that truly showed off her sexy, sultry beauty. The hair color featured on Kylie is amazing as it probably uses 2 different color services. An all over color is applied first to add richness to the base color of the hair (here we see a dark beige color). Once this service is complete, a bleach balayage painting technique is applied to large pieces of hair all over the hair. Then the bleached hair is toned a super light beige blond. This service gives a great multidimensional effect that makes her highlights pop out and truly accents her medium skin tone. More and more celebrities and every day women are demanding this simple, classy technique.

Some great products to try styling with on this hair color:

  • On fine hair: Try using Thickening Compound by Alterna Hemp: It contains color lock, wheat for hair plumping and leave in conditioner.
  • On wavy/curly hair: Apply Leave In Luxury before blow drying. It uses Peruvian bark moisture and botanical extracts to protect hair during heat styling.
  • To finish: Apply Alterna Shine Spray for overall shine and to control fly-aways.

We look forward to the entire Aphrodite album by Kylie and are confident she will rock the house if she decides to tour the globe. We hope she comes here and entertains us with her high quality vocal stylings!

Is Balayage Right For You?

Balayage

Heard of balayage but not sure what it is exactly? Is it for you? What does it even mean? I will tell you!

Balayage is a French term that was developed in the 1970s that means “sweeping” or “to sweep.” It is essentially named after the way in which the color is applied to the hair. It is actually swept on or painted on by hand leaving a more natural looking highlight or lowlight. The technique was developed as a new way to add variation to the hair color with a more natural appearance and a more subtle grow out. The color can be applied for a more bold variation or slight depending on the client. Balayage isn’t just for lightening either. Many stylists will use it to add lowlights or a combination of the two.

Who is balayage right for? Balayage is a technique that is great for anyone who appreciates a little versatility in their color but who doesn’t have time for a lot of maintenance. It also works well for the client who likes a more sunkissed or natural look. It is a great technique for shoulder length and longer hair. Balayage is the perfect color technique for summer, as it offers the same benefits as someone who would be spending a lot of time outdoors. I wouldn’t recommend it for someone with a lot of grey or shorter, finer textured hair.

The technique, that is becoming more and more popular, definitely offers many advantages. It is a foil free color application in which your stylist hand paints your highlights. Picking up layers and “sweeping” the color on different sections of the hair allows the stylist to move more quickly and efficiently while picking the proper placement for the color. It focuses more on the base of the hair shaft rather than concentrating on the root area. Thicker sections will lead to a more bold highlight while smaller will do the opposite.
