Fantastic and Fast Style

Who has time to spend over 30 min on their hair? Not many people! We are always running to work and off to meet friends that trying to hours long glam isn’t always in the cards. Here are some quick tips for getting a 1-2-3 ¬†step style!

menscut8

For men, these types of cuts pictured to the right that are longer on top and extremely faded down to skin are very popular! But even if you have a medium length haircut, there are 2 go to products you can use quickly for n easy yet refined look

-If you want texture, hold and/or a matte finish: use the beeswax based Night Rider by Kevin Murphy. Its great for creating hold on medium to thicker hair types or densities.

-If you want light hold and a soft sheen finish: use the featherweight Undressed by Kevin Murphy. Its great for finer hair types and creates a shine finish that mimics slight wetness.

short

If you have short to a longer pixie cut, you can play with different finishes and texture for variety.

-Loma (locally sourced and cruelty free!) has  a range of styling products that are fun to play with on shorter hair. Try The Fiber Putty by Loma to create definition, texture and medium hold. It can be very helpful for holding a swoop bang like in the picture to the right.

-Or for a sleeker look, try Molding Cream by Moroccan Oil. The argan nut oil in it is conditioning and helps create some of the slicked back looks that are so popular on the runways.

long

If you have medium to long length hair, try creating a soft beachy texture.

-Try and use Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray (fine hair) or Hair Resort gel (medium to thick hair) in your  dry hair on the mid shaft to ends. These products will create hold with minimal effort.

-Blow dry the dampness of the product with a slow speed medium heat dryer. Then use a curling iron to rotate the hair around the curling iron (2″-3″ diameter) in varied directions in 2- 3 rotations. ¬†This creates movement and slight volume. Or curl all pieces away from the face ¬†and it will create soft waves. ¬†Make sure not to curl the last 1-2″ of the ends to recreate a tousled look and do not use the clip on the curling iron.

Once the hair is curled and cooled, use your hands to stretch the curl out a bit by grabbing big sections and smoothing your hands down the curls. This will soften them up and make them look more natural. To finish, use Session Spray by Kevin Murphy lightly¬† 12″ away to hold the curl and protect it from humidity.

Once you have done it a couple times, you will become quick like QUICKSILVER getting out the door in the morning or for an event. Going from day to night should be simple and almost effortless….

5 Beautiful Long Hair Ideas

Long hair looks are sultry and give you many, many options for styling. Here we show you some of our favorite long hair styles and haircolors!

  • longhairColor: This is a balayage haircoloring service with soft golden dark blond and small flicks of lighter blond through the top and front. Ideally, your hair is medium to dark brown naturally so grow out ¬†and maintenance will be minimalized.
  • Styling this: Blow dry with Moroccan Oil Original Treatment for heat protection, shine and moisture. Then apply a Kevin Murphy’s Anti-Gravity Spray before using a large barrel curling iron to create soft curl+wave.
  • Finish with flexible Working Spray by Alterna Caviar which contains caviar extract to protect the hair from over drying.

longhair2

  • Color:¬†This is a soft balayage technique on medium dark brown hair. It is possible to achieve this with lifting haircolor on naturally pigmented hair to minimize damage.
  • Styling this: Once blown dry with Anti-Gravity lotion by Kevin Murphy, put¬†the hair into 4 slightly loose braids. Take a flatiron and clamp down on the brain from the midshaft to the ends. Allow to cool and release the braids.
  • Finish with Moroccan Oil Medium Hold Hairspray..and go!
  • longhair3Color:¬†This is a soft auburn haircolor with hints of strawberry blond balayage through the front and top.
  • Styling this:¬†Blow dry on low speed medium heat from damp with Motion Lotion by Kevin Murphy for curl enhancement and frizz control. Then gather the hair to the side and 3 strand braid close to your neck. Hold the ends and loosen the braid by lightly tugging on the strands.
  • Finish by securing the ends with a hair tie and use a curling iron to make bends in through pulled out pieces in front.

longhair4

  • Color: This is an all over color in transluscent medium dark brown with neutral to ash tones.
  • Styling this: Blow dry from damp with a large round brush using Moroccan Oil Volumizing Mousse. Apply Dry Shampoo by Alterna Caviar at the roots to help keep volume. Then, back brush with a boar bristle brush 2″ from hair line in 2″ sections and spray with Working Spray. Brush the hairline over the volume and slowly smooth out the bumps spraying again. Secure with a few bobby pins by twisting the hair in the back.
  • Finish: Rough up the ends with a little teasing and go!

Ponytail-Braided-Hair

  • Color:¬†This is a soft “sombre” balayage that leaves the natural at the midshaft and subtly blends into 1 level lighter than 2 levels lighter on the ends. This look grows out beautifully and once achieved needs maintenance every 3-4 months.
  • Styling This: Use Undressed by Kevin Murphy to slick the hair into a high ponytail. Grab a piece of hair to wrap around the ponytail holder 3- 4 X and bobby pin securely into the base of the ponytail. Now softly make a 3 strand braid and secure with another ponytail holder.
  • Finish this by misting with a shine spray like Kendi Oil by Alterna Bamboo for shine on the entire thing.

We Love Kevin.Murphy Products!

I asked the stylists which products they liked to work with the best and why, and Kevin.Murphy Hair Products are everyone’s favorite at Emerson Salon!

Here’s the specifics:

Esther: ‚ÄúI love Night.Rider because it gives the perfect matte finish with great hold on all hair types, and a little goes a long way. It works great for women’s pixies too!‚ÄĚ ‚ÄúI really love the new line as well; specifically the Plumping Line‚ÄĚ [Plumping Wash, Plumping Rinse, and Body Mass]. ‚ÄėThey smell like heaven.‚Äô‚ÄĚ

KM_PlumpingLine

D‚ÄôArcy: ‚ÄúThe Anti. Gravity, Angel Series [Angel.Wash and Angel.Rinse], and Body.Mass are the best products for finer hair that I‚Äôve ever worked with. They‚Äôre light, and do not weigh the hair down; also, they have amazing smells and contain natural ingredients. Night.Rider is great because it works for all the new tight fades the guys get these days, and it creates hold and texture for all hair types.‚ÄĚ

KM_Group

Jason: ‚ÄúSo far, I am loving Night.Rider, Free.Hold, and the Stimulate.Me thickening shampoo and conditioner.‚ÄĚ

Historic Trifecta 2015 Show

trifecta1trifecta This past weekend, most of our team (seen far right) attended a cosmetology show hosted and run by  distributor Salon Services.

The event was held at the wonderful Fremont Studios venue in Seattle for 2 whole days where hair designers from all over the Pacific Northwest were delighted by demonstrations in cut, color and style. The product companies that participated were Kevin Murphy, ColorProof, Keune, Moroccan Oil, Green Circle Salons and the author of the book, “Psy-cosmetology.”

The format was extremely interesting with Salon Services owners introducing and asking the CEO or Artistic Directors of each product company: What is the biggest challenge facing the salon industry now and in the future? and What is most important to you and your organization? Many said the diversion of salon products to internet and grocery stores is a huge challenge to professionals in the beauty industry. Our clients should be getting specific recommendations from us as professionals and purchasing with us in salon. At Emerson Salon, we try to carry brands that are rarely diverted and cost exactly the same if they buy it online or in salon.
trifectarosegold¬† ¬† ¬†The first company to show us some fabulous hair were some platform artists from Kevin Murphy. They are releasing their own color line called Color.Me in the US this coming September. They demonstrated some dimensional color effects on the model you see to the left¬†to execute some trendy Rose Gold haircolor with a cotton candy pink on the ends. Former NAHA winner, Tony Ricci also demonstrated some amazing editorial hair and even brought out a toy “Barbie” braider to create twisted braids in the hair (we do not recommend using this at home!.) One of the styles used colored scrap hair from the salon sprayed into cone shapes with Session Spray to make an elaborate “dinosaur” updo (see left below.) Another amazing style Tony did for us was using tight cornrows threaded with yak hair and then the sewing was cut to create a messy dread lock effect. (see right below)

Trifecta14trifecta6

Next up was Moroccan Oil products with some amazing styles from THREE platform artists. This line uses a moisturizing argan nut dry oil as the key ingredient. They showed us some styles that could be easily achieved on clients as well as some extreme  looks executed with extra wigs and bun donuts. (see below)

trifecta8

Then we were treated to a color demonstration from the Holland based company Keune. One of Emerson Salon’s co-owners, D’Arcy, volunteered to assist George Alderete briefly onstage. Look below for proof of her foiling magic on the model! (see left below)

And a highlight of the event was getting to learn from Phillip Wilson from ColorProof who used to work alongside Vidal Sassoon many years ago. He is an exciting and dynamic personality and had the entire room of over 900 hairstylists in stitches. Here, he demonstrates how to create a classic graduated bob using a 2 comb technique instead of traditional layering with fingers and comb. It was amazing to see a totally different approach to the chic style!

trifecta3trifecta4trifecta2

One of the most exciting part of the events was at the end of the second day. One of the vendors had to unfortunately drop out and as a replacement….we were treated to a HISTORIC COLLABORATION between many of the artistic directors and platform artists on some more hair models. Some stylists even worked on the same model simultaneously (see below!) The Salon Services owners Sydney and George were overwhelmed with emotion to see these wonderful hair designers coming together to give the gathered stylists a once in a lifetime treat! Usually, these individuals would never get to cross the aisle to work with another hair designer contracted with a rival product company. It was exciting and awe inspiring to see these successful artists joining to present us with this priceless opportunity!

Trifecta9

Education is SO important to a hair designer staying inspired and on top of their game. We learned a lot at Trifecta 2015 by Salon Services and are excited to let these ideas propel our work with clients into the stratosphere!

Pro’s and Cons Of Pastel Hair

We have seen such a surge in requests for pastel hair color lately! With mainstream celebrities like Nicole¬†Richie, Julianne Hough, Hilary Duff, Katy Perry, Cara Delevigne and others trying on the trendy look – its hard to resist diving in too! Here we detail the fun AND¬†the reality of going for a super light fun shade like seen below……….

palepurplepasteltealpastelmauve

PRO’s of Pastel Hair

You are “ON FLEEK!” Be part of a current trend and the envy of your friends!

Its non committal! Have fun with different pastel shades when you feel like something different once it fades. Or you can play with hair chalk or sprays to try on a pastel hue for a night!

Spring/Summer are a great time to show off this color change because pastels reflect sunlight beautifully!

CON’s of¬†Pastel Hair

Most hair needs to bleached first to super light/white blond in order for a pastel to show up properly.¬†Darker shades and previously colored hair will need to be bleached significantly to get to a blond without orange or gold in it. This can cause damage and makes it difficult to guarantee how long a pastel will last. The more damage incurred the quicker a pastel may fade because of the hairs’ porosity. We recommend prepping your hair 1-2 weeks before bleaching with deep conditioning treatments as well as following a bleach and tone service. We love the Deep Quench Moisture Masque by ColorProof-it can rehab the most damaged hair and is also vegan and gluten free.

It is important to know that any pastel cannot be guaranteed how long it will stay in the hair. Pastels are usually a semi permanent which stains the cuticle layer of the hair and washes out every time it is rinsed or shampooed.   There is also a lot less pigment deposit in a pastel than a fully concentrated color.

-Listen intently to your colorist.¬†Your stylist can recommend ways to keep the color looking fresh. Schedule regular color refresh appointments so you never look dull or lackluster¬†Most people with vibrant color avoid shampooing their hair as much as possible by using dry shampoo in between washing. We love Alterna Caviar’s Powder Dry Shampoo. At Emerson Salon, a colorist can design a custom color formulated conditioner by EVO Fabuloso Pro to help increase the longevity of a pastel.

Your haircolor is an investment.¬†Getting a pastel haircolor can be expensive to get and expensive to maintain. Be prepared that the service isn’t the only place where your dollars are involved. Appropriate shampoo, conditioner, deep conditioning and leave-in products will be essential to maintaining your fun, new haircolor as well as its health.

Sunlight is your haircolor’s enemy.¬†The summer UV rays will eat through your pastel haircolor so protect it with a UV protectant like Moroccan Oil. It also moisturizes the hair and protects from heat styling so it is your GO TO PRODUCT to keep your hair looking and feeling good after receiving a pastel with bleaching and toning.

Hopefully we have prepared you for the true nature of getting that AWESOME new pastel hair you’re dying for and we will see you in the chair! Book with an Emerson Stylist by contacting one directly TODAY!

Frolicking, Fun Hair at Festivals

The music festival season is upon us! When the sun comes out, the desire to dance  outside and listen to top acts strut their stuff means you have to have fun hair! (Duh!)

Here we review some of the looks we saw popping up at SXSW and Coachella recently as you prepare for Sasquatch and other fests…

kylielilac

The trendiest women’s hair colors are pastels this spring. Light Teal, slate gray and pale lilac (see right above) are all the rage and young women are calling off the hook at the salon for them! It is good ¬†for you to know, however, that in order to achieve these looks that there will be bleaching involved. Hair must be lifted to a pale white/yellow blond in order for any pastel to show up. Otherwise the remaining pigment in the hair will override the color you are trying to achieve (imagine trying to put pale blue on yellow/gold hair- yellow and blue makes green! no bueno!)

Bleaching the hair to this level  of lightness can be extremely damaging to the hair and can be costly for you as a client. So, if you want to avoid hair breakage Рyou can always opt for a nice wig (see Kylie Jenner above) or try a colored hair powder or spray and set it with some flexible hairspray like AllAround by ColorProof so it will not rub off on clothes or friends you hug. These methods simply wash out in the shower with shampoo and water but be careful- if your hair is porous or damaged it could stain the hair a tad.

braidpart27-creative-braid

If you are just looking for some fun styles to try to wear at our own Capitol Hill Block Party (July 24-26) in Seattle, try some fun braids! You can do some beach waves with Hair Resort by Kevin.Murphy and take a small, reverse french braid down the center part (left above) or try a loosened up french braid (right above.)  Need some tips? Try watching this YouTube tutorial here.

lumbersexualmencoachella

Guys like to have fun with their festival hair too!

You could try what has been playfully coined,”The Lumbersexual Look,” (see left above) which is a very tight fade/clipper cut with a buzzed in part along the disconnection, longer hair on top (for parting and pompadour-ing) and a full beard that dramatically transitions in the sideburn area. Try using Night Rider or Super Goo by Kevin Murphy to help hold the coiffed style on top. Or you can try a clean and tight taper cut with a dreaded/messy top (see right above, Vic Mesa at Coachella.)

Bring your inner boho-chic out with these festival trends and make sure to hit up Emerson Salon for all your hair needs- our independent hairstylists are excited to work with you! Book with one directly today….

Sexy Men’s Hair

menscut2

¬†Do you get uncomfortable trying to tell your stylist what type of short men’s haircut you prefer?

Here are some tips on how to talk about getting a new look:

1) Learn some basic terminology: Taper, Block, Fade, Layers

(We also found a great terminology guide here that has some pics: http://www.ftmguide.org/haircuts.html)

РTAPER: Looking at the picture above, see how the hair moves down the head from longer to shorter to nothing? That is what we call tapering. This can be done with clippers but can also be detailed and perfected with shear over comb or other techniqgues. It leaves an undefinable difference between hair and the neckline.

¬† ¬† ¬† -BLOCK: When a barber or stylist asks you if you like the back “blocked off” it means there is still some hair bulk that can be cut so there is a definable line at the hairline.

-FADE: This refers to the technique of blending the different lengths as it is tapered. Otherwise, you can see obvious differences between the lengths. For example, if the hair was not faded like in the picture above you could see heavy weight lines from the bulk that has been left.

-LAYERS: This refers to the act of using scissors to remove weight from the hair. This technique can help blend longer hair down into shorter, more faded lengths. This technique is helpful in softening the bulk on the top and crown of the head.

2) Learn what type of hair you have:

¬† ¬† ¬†-Fine, Medium, Thick (refers to each individual hair’s thickness)

РStraight, Wavy, Curly, Kinky (refers to texture)

РThin, Medium or Thick Density (refers to density of hair)

Once you know what type of hair you have it is much easier to try and find pictures of haircuts that would work best with your hair type. Google mens cut+ your hair type and look in the images portion of the search results. Or, use Pinterest! Stylists love looking at pictures of what you are looking for in your new haircut! Also, it helps you to understand how your hair will work for your new haircut.

3) Make sure to tell your stylist what has and has not worked for your hair in the past.

Do you have any odd cowlicks or growth patterns? Does you hair stick out as it grows back in? Does your hair hate razor cuts or thinning shears? No sense in repeating ickyness from old haircuts!

4) Ask the stylist to recommend the right product for the haircut you are asking for.

No sense in wearing that awesome new do without the right product to help show it off! TIP: Have the stylist give you a brief tutorial on how to put it into your hair. Do you need a comb? Can you use your fingers? Do you have to do any heat styling? TIP: The top 2 products for men at Emerson Salon are the lightweight Easy Rider and the matte ,firm hold Night Rider by Kevin Murphy.

Men’s short haircuts grows quickly so changing your style every few months is possible for many ¬†men! Try out one of our EXCITING stylists at Emerson Salon for your next haircut …….
