Fresh.Hair Saves the Day!

I tell my clients all time that washing your hair everyday is unnecessary and can make your hair dry. Of course, no one wants oily hair and most people can’t go without washing every day… Until now! I have seen a lot of dry shampoos and this has to be the best yet! Kevin Murphy does it again with Fresh.Hair.

This product is an aerosol dry shampoo that adds volume to your hair while soaking up excess oil, product, and unwanted smells. My first experiment with it was to spray it in my hair on day 2 of not washing it, after I had iron curled it twice. At that point, my main goal was to see if it would take out the burnt hair smell you get from high heat curling irons. I simply sprayed it all over my head, like you would a hair spray and to my surprise it took out the smell and left my hair feeling like there was nothing in it! I was sold at that point but wanted to see what this product was really made to be used so I checked out the Kevin.Murphy website.

The way this product was made to use is to do quick little sprays at your part and around your hairline and then either brush through (for blondes it just blends in or covers your re-growth) or use the Kevin Murphy towel to work in the product. They say not to spray it like a hairspray (like I did) but that you could if you wanted more texture to your hair. In the video (click here to check it out!) they spray it all over to give her more volume and you can see how well it works. For clients with thin hair that want to soak up oil and add volume this is the product was made for you, too! It’s not too heavy and will reactivate product from the day before as well. All around this product amazed me! Feel free to stop by and try it out for yourself. I think you will agree that it saves the day!

Fighting Dry Scalp

During these cold winter months, many clients complain that their scalp feels dry, tight, and itchy. This is usually due to inside heating and its lack of moisture in the air from heating coils, radiators, etc. In order to deal with this seasonal issue there are a few things you can do:

Massaging-Your-Scalp-Stimulates-Hair-Growth

  • Purchase a humidifier in order to infuse the air in your home with steam moisture. The moisture will help to eleviate the tight scalp with continued use over time. This is also great for people who complain of sinus problems as it can aid to lubricate and open airways.
  • Use a shampoo and conditioner used to balance scalp conditions. Try Balancing Wash by Kevin Murphy which uses green tea and essential oils or try using Life Solutions by Alterna. These products are specifically designed to treat the scalp and its issues. When shampooing, make sure you scrub your scalp aggressively in order to aid in removing dead skin cells in addition to increasing blood flow to the follicle.
  • If these solutions do not work for you, book a scalp treatment at Emerson Salon using Moroccan Oil Dry Scalp treatment. It uses argan nut oil in addition to salicylic acid to battle tight scalp and dandruff. Salicylic acid opens clogged pores/ follicles and eliminates underlying bacteria that could cause follicle blockage in the future. This treatment can be added on to a haircut or shampoo blowout, includes a vigorous scalp massage and then is allowed to penetrate the scalp for 5-10 minutes. It is essential to shampoo out the treatment after as salicylic acid is not intended to be left on the head. This treatment will last anywhere from 3-4 weeks.
  • Use a styling product that aids your scalp in maintaining moisture balance like Anti Gravity. This oil free volumizer is great for medium to fine density hair and its botanical and essential oils help to equalize the oil/sebacous glands of the scalp.

Once you have a healthy scalp you will be building conditions which are essential to creating and maintaining healthy hair. Every detail counts. Having a scalp issue? Book with a consultation with an Emerson stylist today!

New Year’s Hair Resolutions: Find the Right Shampoo for You

As we come ever so closer to the end of the year we all start to think about our personal New Year’s resolutions. We try to find ways that we can improve ourselves. One resolution that I recommend to people is to work with your stylist to find the right shampoo for you.

Shampoos and conditioners are the first steps you can take to having beautiful, resilient hair. Many people think that all shampoos are the same and that it doesn’t matter what they get. When people use lower quality products their hair won’t be as shiny and strong as it would have been with a quality shampoo and conditioner.

  • Angel.Wash and Angel.Rinse by Kevin.Murphy is a great shampoo for hair that is fine. As well as being color safe, it is very light and won’t weigh the hair down.
  • Luxury.Wash and Rinse is developed for coarser, thicker hair. It is a heavier formula and will help weigh hair down that would normally be unruly and everywhere. It also has Leave.in.Luxury, a leave-in conditioner which helps to add that extra bit of softness for very rough hair.
  • Alterna Caviar makes two, toned shampoos and conditioners. One is for Blonde hair and helps prevent hair from turning brassy. The other is for Brunettes and helps eliminate red and orange tones.
  • If your hair is dry, using the Alterna Moisturizing Shampoo will be wonderfully hydrating for your hair.
  • When you have intense damage to your hair, whether it happens from the environment, heat styling, or chemical processing, Kevin.Murphy Born.Again Wash and Rinse is for you. It will give your hair the moisture therapy that your hair will be needing. It is great for all hair types and amazingly effective. If you have great amounts of damage, you may want to consider combining Born.Again with the Leave-in.Luxury. Though it will add some weight to your hair, it will help supply it with conditioning nutrients it needs to be healthy.
  • To prevent damage in the first place, using a quality thermal shampoo and conditioner if you heat style (blowdrying, curling, or flat ironing) can save you a lot of headache. It will allow you to heat style your hair while shielding the hair from the damage.

Shampoos and conditioners are the first step to beautiful healthy hair. Come into Emerson to talk with one of our skilled stylists about which shampoos and conditioners are right for you.

Kevin.Murphy’s Top Ten Tips for Styling

Kevin.Murphy is a great product line. Sulfate and paraben free, it is based off of the idea that you shouldn’t have to work hard to have great hair. I recently discovered this list of their top ten recommended techniques for great hair using their products from their website.

kevin_murphy_fashionlabelPhoto

    • If you have fine curly hair and want to enhance the curl without losing bounce. Use MOTION.LOTION and a dab of ANGEL.RINSE on the ends.
    • Want the curl to relax? Mix MOTION.LOTION with LEAVE-IN.LUXURY for the Rapunzel/mermaid look.
    • Add a drop of MOTION.LOTION to your ANTI.GRAVITY for volume, lift and soft definition.
    • Hair curly and a bit dry? Mix MOTION.LOTION and BORN.AGAIN for the ultimate leave in treatment with a silky feel.
    • If your curl is looking a bit yesterday, spritz with STAYING.ALIVE, leave for a second and give your hair a toss. Now you are today.
    • Banish the frizz on curls and relax the look with MOTION.LOTION in hand put up into a ponytail and wipe on MOTION.LOTION and go!
    • Afro to slickback, mix ROUGH.RIDER and STICKY.BUSINESS for flat, shiny hair
    • After blow drying with ANTI.GRAVITY, wipe on MOTION.LOTION to dirty up the do and give you a model look.
    • Fast hair, blast in ANTI.GRAVITY until the hair is dry and still slightly hot. Wipe in some HAIR.SCREEN, twist it up, untwist, shake and you have the instant glam do.
    • Dry in LEAVE-IN.LUXURY, rinse and forget the straightening irons. It will stay straight and will even keep away the humidity frizz.

I hope these tips from Kevin.Murphy will help you create that look that you’ve been trying to create. If you have any other questions about Kevin.Murphy products or how to use them, come in and have a chat with one of our skilled stylists.

      Kevin Murphy model
Need all the volume you can get? Kevin.Murphy Powder.Puff is ideal for fine locks, both long and short. A weightless metamorphosis product it starts as a fine powder and changes to a lotion with a matte finish. Shorter styles can get lift and texture without a ‘product-y’ build up. All you need to do is lightly tap onto dry hair and emulsify to set then style and place as you will.

      Kevin Murphy powder puff
Sky’s the limit for volume with Powder.Puff, Anti.Gravity, and Session.Spray. Longer hair and curls can also benefit from added volume. For all hair types, apply sparingly to roots of dry hair for added volume.

      Summer Formalities

As the summer draws to a close, we look back at some of the events over the past season. Namely, all of the joyous weddings that occurred from June to September. From backyard ceremonies to elaborate ballroom receptions, the main focus is on the bride and groom on their big day. Here we provide some tips for both on how to organize for such a large occasion!

      bridalupdo2 bridalupdo4
Brides:  A good thing to do first is to figure out what your budget is. Bridal hairstyles can range from $85-$110, depending on the length of the hair and the style desired (does it need to be flat ironed or curled, etc?) We recommend receiving a light trim to your haircut 1-2 weeks beforehand to remove any split ends. In addition, if you will be attempting any color services it is good to receive them 2 weeks ahead of time in case the color needs adjustment.

Some brides choose to utilize a paid practice session ($40 an hour) in order to eliminate any anxiety about the style before the ceremony. We try out the style, take pictures and troubleshoot any problems and then take the hair down and wash it before you leave. If you have your veil or any hair jewelry beforehand, the practice session is the perfect time to figure out how they will be planned into the overall style.

      bridalupdo1

The important thing to do before consulting a stylist for your wedding hair is to find lots of pictures of hair that excites you. You can even bring in pictures of hair you absolutely do not like as this will aid your stylist to better hone what your aesthetic is. Do you want height? Do you want all of your hair up, half down or all down? What are some adjectives you would use to describe what you want your hair to look like (soft, romantic, wavy, sleek, shiny, etc.)? All of these elements will better assist you to becoming happy with your formal style!

      bridalupdo3

If you are looking to create a formal style on your own, try using these products:
Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna for picture perfect shine before and after styling
Working Spray by Alterna for applying before curling for flexible hold
Easy Rider by Kevin Murphny for smoothing flyaways into the style
Session Spray by Kevin Murphy for hard hold when the style is complete

Grooms: We recommend receiving an extended consultation with an Emerson stylist to determine what is the desired result for the big day. Feel free to bring your bride with you for this initial consultation as we are sure she might have input! Make your haircut appointment for 2 weeks beforehand and then book a quick “line up” for the day before or day of. A “line up” would be where only the edges around the ears and nape are trimmed with clippers. Whether you intend to have your hair parted or fauxhawked or messy, two great go-to products for guys are Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy for frizz control and light hold and  Night Rider for matte finish and firm hold.

Did you attend a beautiful nuptial this season? Already have invitations to more? Make an appointment for your style with Emerson Salon today.
