The sun is out in force and it’s time to not only break out the sunscreen for your skin but it’s also time to protect your color from fading prematurely!

Luckily, Alterna’s UV+ line was recently created for you. It is Clinically proven to protect your hair color from fading for up to 60 washes. If you wash your hair once a day, that means your color will last for two months when you use the UV+ products. In two months’ you’ll have new growth that will need re-touched. Don’t you want your hair to look its best for as long as it can?

The UV+ line contains Kalahari Melon, from a desert in Africa. Nature has given this melon its own UV protectant; the melon stays bright in the sun year-long. If you enjoy activities that include salt water, chlorine pools, lake water, and/or the sun, the UV+ Fade-Proof Fluide is waterproof and protects against these things when sprayed onto the hair before going out into the sun or getting into a body of water. Just spray it onto your hair and you’ll have a micro-thin, waterproof barrier that protects your hair from salt, chorine, water, and/or sun. Basically, it is “sunscreen for your hair”.

Gone on vacation somewhere hot, only to come back home with your hair wrecked? Get your hair some rehab quick! The UV+ REHAB Deep Hydration Masque, that is. In just 3 minutes, you can restore your hair’s flexibility, strength, and moisture balance with a powerful blend rich in amino acids, sugars & minerals.

Disclaimer: Hair products cannot be labeled as containing SPF but every Alterna product has UVA and UVB inhibitors and clients will see results right away.

Pravana’s Perfection Smoothing service, that is. Perfection is a patent-pending innovation that safely transforms coarse, frizzy, and curly hair into straight, smooth, and shiny hair. It is in fact, the New Generation in smoothing.

I recently performed the Perfection service on two clients:

Tara had been using a traditional hair texturizer which left her hair brittle and damaged. She never wore her hair down. It was always pulled back tight, which made her hair break off even more. Her previously textured hair was left bone straight after one Perfection treatment, and her newly treated hair is still curly but it is not dry or brittle. She has not worn her hair pulled back since!

Daemon has notoriously wild hair. He wore his hair back in a ponytail most of the time, because his hair was coarse, frizzy, dry, unruly, and long. When I saw him perform onstage, I told him I wanted to help his hair look and feel better. I haven’t seen his hair in a ponytail since! He is able to wear it loose and curly without frizz, or straight and sleek. It also feels great!

If you’d like straighter, smoother, more manageable hair, schedule an appointment with me today!

Perfection Facts:

Perfection can be performed on any hair type, condition, and length.

It’s proprietary nano-amino acid complex suspends the internal textural memory of the hair to a new, soft, and sensual look and feel.

Perfection contains a pro-vitamin B complex and a has a low pH level. It contains no harsh chemicals, poses no health risks, and preserves the integrity of the hair.

Color clients can receive a color service immediately after the treatment.

Perfection lasts 8-12 weeks, at which point the hair returns to its natural textural memory state.

Subsequent treatments will leave the hair smoother and straighter for longer.

“I really don’t trust a lot of people with my hair, but I’ve had people close to me recommend Lancer Forney at the Emerson Salon. I finally had a chance to get my hair done by him.

Now my hair has been notorious for being rather wild. I get my thick long hair from my dad and it has stifled a lot of hairdressers for years. He wanted to try this new Perfection Smoothing System on me, and I was thinking that this would be like other relaxers or texturizers. I was wrong.

That whole procedure was not invasive at all unlike traditional ones. In fact he was also able to do the coloring right after we shampooed the treatment out. He had a bunch of hair swatches to help compare the different shades and how they would compliment with my natural hair color. in the end I ended up with some of the best hair I’ve ever had in years…not since my old hairdresser back in Long Beach retired some 15 years ago.

The vibe here is very easy going, unlike most salons where it could be a bit on the pretentious side. I was there for four hours, but I had so much fun chatting it up with everyone there while getting my hair done it didn’t even feel like it at all. To call Lancer a stylist is an understatement. He’s an artist. He knows what he’s doing and can even turn my mangled mess into something I can actually be proud of.

He also recommended this Morrocan Oil shampoo and conditioner that will preserve everything that was performed that day. Yeah this stuff and the salon ain’t cheap but when it comes to your hair you get what you pay for, and compared to all the uber-pretentious salons I’ve been at it’s actually a good value since you’re getting so much more than just a haircut.

Lancer is the man you want. Of course, if he’s booked Kate’s a wonderful stylist too!”

Daniel says:

“If y’all, ladies or gentlemen, need a hair cut… this place is the spot. Personally Kate Kalnins is the best. She is a taller gal, wearing a lot of black.. Anyway she really does amazing work and she is very thorough.”

Great job guys! Check out these reviews and all of our reviews on our Yelp page.

I am frequently asked “what can I do with this fine, limp hair”? If you keep letting your hair air dry and don’t accept my product and styling recommendations, there is nothing I can do for you. Fine hair is oily by origin. It lacks protein and the density it needs to do anything but fall down. How you combat this is achieved in part by how your hair is cut but also in how you manage your hair at home. It also depends on what kind of maintenance you are willing to do. Most clients want no maintenance, and they don’t own a hair dryer. They also don’t want to use styling products. This is a recipe for hair fail!

I cut my fine hair clients’ hair to suit their lifestyle and desires. I can cut a good shape for my fine hair clients and I can texturize their hair within the cut to give them some internal volume. This is only part of the remedy. I recommend professional volumizing shampoos and conditioners that I know that work in the salon I work in. My favorite is Alterna’s Bamboo Abundant Volume shampoo and conditioner. For light styling, their Plumping Strand Expand cannot be beat!

Once your hair is shampooed and conditioned, towel dry hair to get the excess moisture out. Dispense a couple of pumps of the Strand Expand into your hand, rub your hands together and run your fingers through your hair, from roots to ends. Blow dry your hair with medium heat on a medium setting. Heat activates the product and dries it into your hair. No matter what your blow drying technique is, make sure to get the root area of your hair completely dry. This will give your hair the most support. Your ends will dry soon enough.

Once your hair has been adequately blow-dried in the style you are happy with, let your hair cool down. Any kind of heat, including the heat from your hands, will restyle your hair and flatten it. Once your hair is cool, you can use a wide-toothed comb or hairbrush with spaces between the bristles to finalize your style. Don’t be heavy-handed- a light touch is all that is required and one can over-do! It is better for your hair to be a bit bigger than you’d like at the style finish, because hair flattens during the day, when you put a coat, hat, and/or a scarf on, and when you step outside in any sort of humidity.

Use a volume-locking hairspray at the end to finish and set your style for the day. You can take a mini hairspray can with you to work. Bamboo Volume Root Blast can also be used instead of hair spray. It adds volume to dry hair without the stickiness some hair sprays can have. Should your style fall, simply bend your head downward, spray lightly underneath your hair, shake your head and lift your head up. You can lightly use your comb or brush again to calm down any rogue hairs J

This is a treat for stylists, because we rarely have the opportunity to work on a blank canvas. Jocelyn wanted a chunk of colors that would appear subtle when she wears her hair down but would also look bolder when she wears her hair up. I blended four colors into her hair using a color melting technique. The result is a natural peacock feather look that Jocelyn can display or not as she changes her hairstyle!

Byron has thick hair that supports short styles very well. He had a faux hawk for awhile and wanted to take it further and have a mohawk. This cut works well for Byron’s face and he can rock it with his personality. He had a chunk of red in his hair previously and I amped it up this time by melting a darker burgundy color into very bright red toward the tips of his hair.
This technique leaves some of his hair natural, some a darker blended color, and some of it very vivid. Melting the colors together gives Byron a richer more textured look to his mohawk and it will also grow out better than solid bright red would. The color lines are subtler, blended, and infused.
If you would like to try color melting the next time you color your hair, schedule an appointment with me at Emerson Salon!

I hadn’t seen a recent Woody Allen film in awhile, though I have always enjoyed his movies.
Midnight In Paris, written and directed by Allen, stars Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams. It is, of course, a romantic comedy, about a family traveling to Paris for business. Owen and Rachel are cast as a young engaged couple who confront the “illusion that a life different from their own is better.”

I believe that both Wilson and Allen have had hair transplants. They both look great and their haircuts suit them very well. Allen’s hair, all white, is cut short. When hair goes white (or gray), is coarser and thicker than the hair it replaced. As we all age, lighter hair makes us look younger, as our skin also pales.

Wilson’s hair, while not white, has been highlighted. His hair is cut longer, with casual layers. The combination of his hair color and style gives his hair texture, movement, and warmth, and keeps him also young-looking.

McAdams’s hair for “Midnight In Paris” is cut into an A-line bob. She wears it curly and tousled in the front, which helps to blend her bangs into her new bob cut. Personally, I like her hair better here, with her bangs worn down and separate from her longer hairstyle. Bangs suit her face and show off her eyes better.

This movie looks fun and after viewing “Match Point”, I am excited to see Allen’s newest movie!

Le’s hair was very heavy and she had grown it long. Though her hair looked good long, her head did not feel good because of all the weight. She also wanted to have more styling options rather than just wearing it down or in braids. I gave Le a very textured, “Wrecked” Bob. Cutting her hair to just above her shoulders alleviated a lot of the unwanted weight. Adding layers and mad texture gave her hair movement, definition, and shape. She can wear her hair down and loose like in the picture or she can put it up in pigtails and it still looks cute!

Emerson Salon offers two MoroccanOil Balancing Scalp Treatments; one for dry scalps and one for oily scalps.

What is Dry Scalp?

It occurs from using harsh hair products and/or harsh shampoos and conditioners, hard water, winter weather and dry skin, over washing, over brushing, and/or scratching your head when you shampoo or condition it. If you must shampoo your hair every day, we recommend using a dry shampoo. Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Dry Shampoo is one of the best and it is made from a French clay instead of talc, as talc can be toxic and may be cancer-causing.

Sun and high-heat hair appliances also dry out your scalp. Also, if you don’t condition your hair, it may result in dry scalp. Dry scalp is commonly mistaken for dandruff, which is it not. Real flakes are large and waxy in texture. Dandruff is a medical condition caused by a fungus causing the shedding of skin cells.

What is Oily Scalp?

It is caused by poor hygiene, hormone imbalances, and genetics. “Doctors at Derma Doctor diagnose heredity as the single main cause of excess oil production in the scalp.” “Dihydrotestosterone, a hormone and genetically linked trait, is one of the main factors. If your relatives and immediate family have a history of oily scalp, then chances are that you will, too.”
Avoid brushing your hair vigorously, as doing so will bring the oil down into the rest of your hair.

MoroccanOil Scalp Re-balancing Treatments:
A 10-minute in-salon invigorating scalp massage treatment, which increases scalp circulation and balances our clients’ scalp issues. These treatments are infused with essential oils such as organic ginger, lavender and geranium extracts, which calm and improve the condition of your scalp and the quality of your hair. The treatment oil sets in your hair for 10 more minutes. Further care is taken by shampooing your hair with MoroccanOil Moisture Repair Shampoo and conditioning with MoroccanOil Moisture Repair Conditioner. These hair care products further moisturizes both your hair and your scalp and are color safe, sulfate, phosphate, and paraben free. Finally, we blow dry your hair after applying the MoroccanOil Treatment, which revives, strengthens and conditions the hair, as well as reducing the hair’s drying time.

Note: We also offer both the MoroccanOil Dry-No-More and the Oil-No-More Professional scalp treatments for your DIY use.
