How To Find Out If You Are Allergic To Haircolor

love hair color

Some people are allergic to ingredients in hair color. It isn’t a common occurrence but for those who are it can be quite the annoyance!

The most common allergen found in hair color is PPD (paraphenylenediamine), which is mostly found in permanent hair color. If you have never had your hair colored, or if PPD allergy runs in your family, there is an easy way to find out if you are allergic in the salon. Licensed Cosmetologists can do a patch test in the salon, which will determine if you will have a skin reaction to PPD-based hair color. Ingterestingly, PPD is also found in fur coats and wigs.

“Positive patch test reactions to p-phenylenediamine (PPD) are common. PPD is used in oxidative hair dyes and is also present in dark henna temporary ‘tattoos’. Cross-sensitization to other contact allergens may occur.”

About 25% of people allergic to PPD may also be allergic to ingredients found in semi-permanent hair colors, of which may also be found in pen inks and may be used to color certain foods and pharmaceuticals. Semi- permanent and demi-permanent hair colors are usually ammonia-free but the ammonia substitute, ethanolamine, may produce a reaction in some people. Again, a patch test can be done in the salon to determine if you are allergic to either semi- or demi-permanent hair colors that are carried in the salon. Reactions to PPD include

  • Itching scalp/skin
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Mild dandruff like symptoms
  • Scaly skin
  • Pain
  • Sneezing or other hay fever/cold like symptoms when ever hair dye applied
  • Nausea when dye applied
  • Sever swelling around eyes
  • Scaly skin on ears, face and neck

The patch test is simple. Your stylist will apply a small amount of color mixed with developer to behind the ear (if your hair is short) or to the inner bend of the elbow. This has to be allowed to dry and to remain uncovered for 48-72 hours. If no irritation or rash occurs between the time the patch test is applied and 72 hours is complete, the test is negative, and you can proceed to schedule a hair coloring service.

Franz’s New Haircut!

newhaircut
I just got my hair cut with Lancer! It was not a huge change, but big enough to make a difference. I love to style my hair with it up in the back, blended on the sides, and keeping all the length that I’ve worked so hard to grow long. So we cut about an inch off of the crown area cut back the back of my mohawk to be smaller and blended it, and blended the new length on the top to the clippered sides.

To style this we cocktailed a Kevin.Murphy Body.Guard and Hair.Resort in my hair to blow it dry. The Body.Guard helps to moisturize my chemically processed and already naturally dry hair. The Hair.Resort helps provide the hair with beach texture, and goodness knows I love texture in my hair. then we flat iron my hair using Damage.Manager to protect myself from excess heat damage and Night.Rider paste to create a hard hold with texture. Viola! My new look is completed! Thanks Lancer!

Lancers latest 4 star review

It’s 10AM on Easter Sunday, you need a haircut BAD and have brunch plans with the in-laws in about 45 minutes. What do you do? Head down to Emerson where they take you right away and get you out the door. It was amazing – in and out in less than 30 mins and with a fantastic haircut no less (my hair is very easy). Great service, great vibe, great haircut. No complaints here.

Thanks Joe O.

What to Do with Hair Product Allergies?

Yulia

Many people these days are suffering with chemical sensitivities and allergies. Yulia is just one of my clients who is allergic to hair products. Emerson Salon carries a variety of shampoos and conditioners that are gluten, paraben, sulfate, glycerin, and mineral oil free; however, many products on the market are not free of these ingredients. NOTE!: Without using product, you most likely won’t be able to get your hair to do everything you want it too. But with proper communication with your stylist you can make a look that will work with your sensitivities.

I asked Yulia to smell the shampoo that I would be using on her hair first. She said it was fine, so I proceeded in using one of the shampoos that are free of most things people are sensitive to. Sometimes people have multiple chemical sensitivities that affect not just their bodies but also their cognitive abilities and emotions and therefore cannot express or identify that a product is affecting them. That means that finding the right products for you.

When a client cannot use any styling product in their hair, the haircut is the finished product. The haircut is the style, so the haircut has to be technically good and the texture has to be added to
the haircut design by the stylist. It has to look good without product and it will look the same way all the time.

Yulia wanted a layered bob, which can be a technically difficult haircut to do on anyone. I took my time and worked with her hair texture to create a beautiful layered bob that does not need hair product to support the style. Her hair was dried with a hair dryer using medium heat, so as to not aggravate her scalp.

Balayage on Soraya

Soraya

Soraya has long thick sleek hair and I have been highlighting her hair using the Balayage technique to give her hair texture and color variation. She liked the Balayage method because it grows out subtly and the highlights look natural- like the sun could have done them.

It can be a challenge to highlight long hair because the porosity of long hair varies. The hair is more resistant (stronger) nearer the root and is more porous (weaker) toward the ends of the hair. The reason for this is that the hair at the end of the strand has been on the head for a longer amount of time and has been exposed to the elements, hair coloring processes, products and the environment for a longer amount of time.

As you can see in Soraya’s pictures, the hair is lighter toward the ends of her hair because hair is naturally lighter toward the ends of the hair and we achieve this effect with the Balayage technique.

La Roux: Make your Hair “Bulletproof”

Elly Jackson has amazing style, presence, and personally, I enjoy her music. She has a cutting edge hair design that is stylistically versatile. The Haircut is achieved with a combination of cutting and texturizing techniques. Deeper texture is cut into the top of her hair to give volume and support to her changing hair styles.

La Roux

Her style can be achieved by prepping your hair with Kevin Murphy Angel Wash and Angel Rinse; both designed for fine, color-treated hair. After your hair is prepped, spray Kevin Murphy Body Builder Mousse into your hand; emulsify and apply with your fingers throughout the hair, starting on the sides and blow dry the sides into place. Set the sides with Kevin Murphy Session Spray. For the top of the hair, blow dry into position using a wide-toothed comb, your hands, or a brush, until the hair is completely dry. Once dry and cooled, shake some Kevin Murphy Powder Puff powder into the hair on top and rub it into the hair for extra support and maximum volume. Finish the style with Fudge Membrane Gas or more of the Kevin Murphy Session Spray.

Here is La Roux’s third single, Bulletproof.

Jonathan’s Red Mohawk

Jonathan found our salon online and was visiting Seattle from Denver. He works as a vet tech and requested a red Mohawk. His hair had just gotten long enough to support a hawk, so I began with the cut and we consulted about what kind of red Jonathan wanted. I found that he wanted a more natural red color on his hawk, which complements his natural blond hair as well as his skin tone and eye
color.

It constantly amazes me what a difference a total color change and
haircut can make on a person!

Thanks Jonathan, for visiting us while in Seattle!

Total Color Change

LanceBefore

Lance is a natural blond and has been growing his hair out so that he can eventually have a “Steampunk Pompadour”. He expressed that he wanted to change his hair color to ash black with green streaks, and he had never had Crayon color in his hair. Since he is a natural blond, black might have been too dark for his skin tone. Instead, I customized his color change to a dark ash brown, which suits him much better and looks great with his skin tone and eye color.

LanceAfter2

I created a unique shade of green for the streaks, as green can be tricky to get right; I wanted it to accent his ash brown color. I placed the green along the sides of his hair, so that, as his hair grows into the hairstyle he wants, the color can be maintained and still look awesome, without the look of grow out.

LanceAfter3

Lance is very happy with his new color change and is happy that it looks good in the daylight as well as in a club. Lance is a performer and will be performing in his new persona, “Boi Middler” for the first time this Sunday, April 3rd, in Olympia at “So You Think You Can Drag?” a benefit for Capital City Pride.
