How to get True Blood’s Joe Manganiello Look

Manganiello plays the devilishly handsome werewolf in HBO’s hit show True Blood. His character, Alcide Herveaux, is a werewolf so he needs to have a style to match his wild persona. His longer hair and beard give him a great look that can cater to the rugged look he needs for the show, while giving him the ability to have cleaner looks for events.

His longer hair allows him to push his hair back for a more clean look. This is a great time to use Kevin.Murphy Night.Rider. Simply wash the hair, dry it, and comb it with your fingers. Use a small amount of Night.Rider, rubbing it in your palms and dispersing it throughout the hair and pushing it back lightly, combing it with your fingers. Try not to push it down, because we want to keep the volume.

Longer hair can be a great look, but it can need a little more attention. This is especially true if you have resistant cowlicks that need to be blown dry for you to be able to work with them. Even using a small amount of Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider for a flexible hold, defining texture and fighting frizz, can make these kinds of looks much more manageable and attractive.

Interesting in trying out some of these products in your hair? Think this is a good look for you? Make an appointment with me at Emerson Salon today!

Hair too Heavy?

Le’s hair was very heavy and she had grown it long. Though her hair looked good long, her head did not feel good because of all the weight. She also wanted to have more styling options rather than just wearing it down or in braids. I gave Le a very textured, “Wrecked” Bob. Cutting her hair to just above her shoulders alleviated a lot of the unwanted weight. Adding layers and mad texture gave her hair movement, definition, and shape. She can wear her hair down and loose like in the picture or she can put it up in pigtails and it still looks cute!

Hair by Franz: Lorena’s Cut and Curl

Lorena came in to get her hair cut by me last week. This was a really fun cut to do because I got to witness a dramatic change. Lorena has a lot of hair and she didn’t have a lot of layers. Combine these with the fact that she has curly hair naturally means that she had a huge amount of hair.

When we cut her hair, we cut her shortest layers to fall at her lips so to relieve a lot of weight and bulk and show off her natural texture a bit better. I wouldn’t recommend this for people with more straight hair or thinner heads of hair because it will more than likely remove too much hair and make it look even more thin.

When we curled her hair, we wanted to get her looking good for her trip to the beach. After we washer her with Alterna Bamboo Anti-Frizz shampoo and Conditioner, our products de jour were Kevin.Murphy Motion.Lotion, to fight frizz and enhance her curl, Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager, to protect her hair from the heat, and Kevin.Murphy Hair.Resort Spray to help give her curls a bit more of a beach texture.

When we curled her hair we left a few inches out of her roots and ends and just wrapped the hair down around an open curling iron in large horizontal sections. Once the hair was too hot to touch, we let the hair down and let it cool. Once the head was completed and cooled we broke up the curls with out fingers lightly and sprayed the Hair.Resort on the hair.

Do you think this look works for you? Have any questions? Feel free to book an appointment with me by calling 206-323-7437 or booking online at Emersonsalon.com or emersonsalon@gmail.com

Dramatic Draper

This past weekend, a client of mine referred his partner’s son to me for an extreme change haircut. David had been growing his hair out long for about 3 yrs. The reason for the change in his hairstyle is because he was recently cast in his high school production of, “A West Side Story.” This musical is set in the 1950′s in New York City and chronicles the tensions between an extended family of hispanics and some young street boys in a true Romeo and Juliet fashion.

Don Draper

David will be playing the Chief Officer and was instructed by his director to get a “Don Draper” haircut like that of HBO’s Madmen. This show is also set in the 1950′s and 60′s and is a perfect reference for the crisper style that was popular during that time period.

First, I gathered all of David’s long hair at the back of his neck into a ponytail and slowly snipped away his hair (Mom, of course, took pictures to record the big event!). David was able to choose to either keep the hair or send it to Locks Of Love to help young kids with cancer receive a customized wig during their treatment.

Next, I used clippers and trimmers to create the shortness around the nape and back. I typically shampoo the hair at this point before moving on to cutting the rest of the hair with shears. David had some oil buildup on his hair and so I decided to use Maxi.Wash from Kevin.Murphy on his finer to medium density hair to exfoliate out the excess oil with this alpha-hydroxy detoxifying shampoo. A quick rinse with Angel.Rinse from Kevin.Murphy and we were off to finish the look!

At this point, I used texture to blend the medium to longer lengths just above the clipper cut. Lastly, I dropped down the length on top and customized the final style with shears and shear over comb. To style his hair, I used Sticky.Business by Kevin.Murphy which not only helps create a shiny, slick style but also contains antioxidants from Tangerine Peel Oil.

Blond Bombshell: Emily Browning’s Hair from Sucker Punch

A new movie that is taking the world by storm is Sucker Punch. It is a beautiful flurry of punches and kicks. It follows Babydoll (Browning) as she attempts to escape an asylum with her inmate friends before she is sent to be lobotomized. From the shock of her situation, Babydoll plunges herself into her own fantasy world where nothing can stop her.

Babydoll

Browning hair is taken to a very light blonde for the movie. Doing so can create a beautiful look, but it should be done with caution so as to avoid damage. Lightening hair that has already been damaged can just perpetuate the damage. The best solution is to prepare your hair with conditioning treatments a week to two weeks prior to when you plan to lighten your hair. You can receive those at Emerson, and even grab some wonderful products for use at home. One of those products is the Alterna Caviar Over Night Hair Repair. It is a leave on treatment that you use when you go to bed and wash out in the morning.

This may also take two processes, since after your hair is lifted it may not be the correct tone (too yellow or brassy). Browning’s hair in the movie is a very cool blonde, which many times can only be achieved with an additional application of tone after lightening.

Babydoll

As for styling and the cut, her hair is kept long and straight at the top, and textured with layered on the ends. the ends have a slight curl that can be duplicated by applying Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion to damp hair and round brushing. Browning’s hair is then parted slightly to the right, coming to a center parting going down the back. The hair is then pulled into two pigtails held in place with clear bands. I recommend using a comb to ensure even tension when gathering the hair, and then using the Kevin Murphy Session Spray to hold down any fly-aways.

It is always a good idea to have a consultation with your stylist to assess the condition of the hair andcreate a battle plan. Come in to Emerson Salon today to get your new blonde locks!

Alexa Davalos in Clash of the Titans

MV5BMTMwNjI3MTcyNl5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTcwNDM3NzAzMw@@._V1._SX267_SY400_

Clash of the Titans will be released April 2 and is a remake of the original 1981 Greek myth epic about the war between kings and gods. This version is in 3-D and is jam packed with action, visual effects and big stars. Sam Worthington plays the main character of Perseus alongside Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Atertonm, Pete Postelthwaite, and Alexa Davalos.

You may have seen Alexa in such films as The Mist, Chronicles of Riddick or Defiance. She continues her excellent character choices with her role as Andromeda in this particular film. This character is based in classic Greek myth. Due to her mother’s incessant bragging of her daughter’s beauty, evil is unleashed by Poseidon on the kingdom. The violence will not stop until a sacrifice of Andromeda’s virgin flesh is given up to a ferocious sea monster. She is tied to the rocks and left for dead until Sam Worthington’s Perseus comes along.

At the premiere of Clash of the Titans, Alexa has followed the current red carpet trend of slick, 40′s style waves. Her hair is extremely curly and probably took a great deal of work to straighten. If you have hair like hers, here are some tips:

  • After shampooing/conditioning, towel dry the hair by scrunching it with a towel.
  • Apply a cocktail of Moroccan Oil Styling Cream and Styling Oil to the entire head of hair.
  • Blow dry section by section from the nape up with a larger barrel boar bristle brush. If the hair is stubborn and still frizzy or wavy, keep a medium heat flat iron on hand to fix any trouble spots.
  • Once complete, take a barrel iron and lightly curl the ends in back in addition to the ends around the facial framing. Using a cushion brush, smooth out the curls into large, soft waves. It helps to lay the mid shaft and ends over your forearm while brushing to create a cohesive bevel.
  • Mist all over with Glimmer shine by Moroccan Oil for luminosity and then spray with Extra Hold by Alterna for longevity.

Alexa will bring elegance and strength to this role as she did at the red carpet premiere! With these helpful styling tips, you too can make an entrance into any room or event!

Kate Gosselin Gets Extensions

Growing out your hair when you are transitioning from short to long locks can be tedious and torturous. If you can’t stand those funky flip-outs in between, extensions can be a great option to quickly add length and depth to your look.

kategosselin kateg4

Reality star Kate Gosselin recently got rid of what Perez Hilton playfully called,”That reverse side mullet,” with her short hair cropped and texturized in the back with a heavy side swoop in front.  Kudos to Ted Gibson (the stylist who did the extensions) for executing this challenging hairdo on shorter hair. He is known for being Angelina Jolie’s pricey on-call hair designer.

Emerson Salon currently offers HairLoc hair extensions which are a great option to quickly add length without having to use chemicals or glue.  If you are interested, you stop by the salon for a free consultation and help you decide the best game plan for your goals and maintenance needs.

Taylor Swift from Curly to Straight Hair

Hollywood stars are notorious for their overnight makeovers and the latest transformation to be making the rounds is Taylor Swift’s dramatic switch from long wavy hair to sleek straight strands.

She definitely surprised everyone this week by ditching the trademark curls. I think her new straight hair looks great. What do you think?

Jennifer Aniston’s Hair Secrets

Elle Magazine is running an article where they have interviewed one of her former hair stylists to gain a little insight into what makes her hair work. Some of the great tidbits that were divulged include that her extremely popular hairstyle from the first season of Friends, dubbed the Rachel, was “inspired by a model named Beri Smither—Ward Stegerhoek did her hair at the time. She was wearing this really great shag haircut—it wasn’t the Rachel, but it inspired me.” They also explain that “Faye Dunaway’s hairstyle in Bonnie and Clyde was the inspiration for Jen’s bob” (which she sported in 2000 and 2001). This just goes to show the huge spectrum of styles and looks that can work for someone and how inspiration can come from the most unexpected places.
