Henna For Hair

Co-Owner Lancer has been asked many questions about henna and there are many variances that make coloring hair with henna unique. Here is some great information that can help inform you about whether henna is a good choice for you and your hair, as well as what to expect from henna, how to prepare for your henna appointments, and how to take care of your hair post-henna treatment at home.

What Henna Color Can and Cannot Do:

  • Henna deposits pigment onto the hair. It cannot lighten hair. Henna is often permanent and difficult to color over.
  • Henna dyes do not contain chemicals that are required to change the color of dark hair.
  • Henna is natural, and individual results vary, based on one’s hair color.
  • When henna is applied on black or dark brown hair, the result will be within the auburn to burgundy range, with red highlights that will be visible in the sunlight.
  • On light hair, henna might look perfect, or it might come out intense orange or red, since henna doesn’t fade very much on light or fine hair.

What Is In Henna Color and How Does It Work?

  • Blonde, Brown, Auburn, Mahogany, and other shades of henna colorants contain amla, indigo, walnut, rhubarb, and lawsonia.
  • Henna can be enhanced by adding other natural ingredients such as chamomile, beet powder, paprika, coffee, and indigo.
  • Henna works by depositing natural pigments that coat the hair and also provides shine to the hair.
  • This coating is what conditions your hair and makes it shiny, but is also why it’s difficult to remove.

Henna Benefits:

  • Natural Henna is 100% naturally grown & chemical free. The hues produced by henna are natural and vibrant.
  • Henna treatments enhance volume and sooth the scalp, and it also reduces dandruff.
  • Henna’s benefits are cumulative; with repeated applications over the years, henna improves the hair’s texture.
  • Since henna is natural, it conditions and colors your hair in a natural and safe manner.
  • Henna naturally conditions, strengthens, removes excess oil, protects hair from sun damage, and leaves hair silky and soft.

First Time Henna Users:

  • Everyone’s hair is different, and getting rid of unwanted henna color is rarely an option.
  • I always recommend doing a strand test before a first time henna service, because natural dyes also affected by your natural color, as well as any other colors you have on your hair.
  • Henna can only be grown out or cut out of the hair, because it is a permanent stain. it can be color shifted or enhanced only with another henna product, since it coats the outer hair shaft which affects the penetration of traditional chemical colors.
  • Your results may vary and it may take up to 3-4 applications for your hair to recognize henna.
  • If you don’t see your desired color right away, wait 48-72 hours to see your results.
  • Henna stains hair red-orange, but the stain is translucent and will combine with your natural color.
  • Repeated henna applications will result in a deeper color.
  • Henna can become less translucent over time from repeated applications, by applying a deeper henna mixture, or from mixing henna with indigo.
  • Sometimes an additional henna application is needed for the optimal results, especially on gray hair.
  • Gray hair tends to be stubborn and can be difficult to cover with henna because henna is so natural, and nature takes its time.
  • Henna will dye white hair a natural red or a deep red.
  • Henna will dye blonde hair red, which can translate as intense orange.
  • Henna on red hair will make the hair a deeper red.

Post-Henna Service (At Home Care Instructions):

  • Please shampoo your hair between 24-48 hours of application to lock in your color.
  • If you have deep red, wine red, mahogany, or burgundy henna on your hair, you should then wash your hair for 3 consecutive days to help lessen the pigment bleeding.
  • Red clay is used in these henna colors, which tends to make the color bleed.

Tips to Lessen Color Bleeding:

  • Avoid using any white linens during the bleed stage post-red henna coloring.
  • Make sure your hair is dry before dressing, and avoid light colored clothing.
  • Please avoid piling your hair on top of your head while washing your hair. Always rinse from roots to tips and consider washing sections separately.
  • Rinsing with cold cool water is very important to help seal the hair cuticle, lessening dyes escaping.
  • Using conditioner when rinsing henna helps lessen color bleeding.

Award-Winning: Evening of Excellence

Nov 20, 2019 was a momentous day for Emerson Salon! Co-Owners Lancer Forney-McMahon and D’Arcy Harrison attended the Association of Washington Business‘ EVENING OF EXCELLENCE blacktie/formal event at Benaroya Hall.

Emerson Salon was nominated and became a finalist for the prestigious WASHINGTON ADVANCE Award. “Recognizing a business who has had a significant impact in their sector, contributing to the advancement of their community and/or statewide economy.”

We make a significant impact on our local economy by providing a safe space for LGTBQ+ and last winter, D’Arcy worked diligently with thousands of other cosmetologists to battle back around 8 state bills that would have harmed small business cosmetology.

We are so honored to be nominated and win this accolade! Running a small business is hard work and sometimes feels discouraging so we are humbled by this celebration of our ongoing work in our field.

Special Thanks Goes to:

AWB and Bob Battles (General Counsel), Ventures Non-Profit, Beto Yarce, Jennifer Crandall, Jennifer Hughes, Matt Buchan, Jeff Holm, Guy Garrison, Natasha Harrison, Bob Skogman, Bob Haig, Marcus Whitener, and Steve Showalter.

Celebrate US!

Has it REALLY been 5 years since Lancer and D’Arcy took over ownership of Emerson Salon? WOW!

Time sure flies when you’re having fun with hair! This unique location inside an old 1920’s auto row building on Capitol Hill in Seattle, WA continues to host experienced small business hair pros who serve quality hair services to their happy hair clients. Our location is centrally located and serves a cozy yet quirky steampunk vibe with old bureau stations and fun purple accents. All of the service providers inside this location are empowered to run their business as they see fit- schedule, online booking, pricing and more!

Join us in celebrating OUR story:

In 2008, Alex Garcia and Matt Buchan established Emerson Salon at 909 E. Pike St. in Seattle, WA. They made a huge impact as they pushed the concept that social media, an expert blog and stylist profiles as imperative to showcase a hair salon in this modern age. From 2008-2012 Lancer and D’Arcy worked as commission based employees and established clientele in the location as employees.

In 2012, the business model was switched by previous owners to renting chairs to independent contractors. Within a small period of time, D’Arcy and Lancer guided colleagues through the process of becoming self employed cosmetologists. Additionally, they wanted to learn the right way to run a small business and attended a business development course through Washington Ventures non-profit organization. They continued advanced training through Peer Loan Group, marketing and financial management courses as well in their pursuit of legal and ethical business practices.  2012 until present, D’Arcy and Lancer have maintained self-employment as independently run booth rent cosmetologists who are highly regarded by the community and clients alike.

In 2014, co-owners Lancer Forney MacMahon and D’Arcy Harrison took over the Emerson Salon location. With legal counsel assistance, they negotiated a new commercial lease with 4-N Associates as well as an extensive transfer agreement with previous owners of the DBA name, goodwill  and assets. B.Please LLC applied for, presented and was granted a “Business Builder” federally backed loan through Washington Ventures and the Small Business Administration. A  B.Please LLC partnership utilizes “Doing Business As” of Emerson Salon.

2014 and beyond: Emerson Salon co-owners (Lancer Forney MacMahon and D’Arcy Harrison) have a combined experience of over 35 years in the cosmetology industry. They are also female and/or LGBTQ and work daily to provide a safe space for everyone in the historically LGTBQ+ friendly Capitol Hill Area.  They also work onsite as cosmetologists themselves and ensure the business is presented professionally on a daily basis via a maintained salon space and online presence (website, connections social media, stylist booking, & blog .)

In Winter 2019, Emerson Salon’s D’Arcy Harrison assisted in killing 6-7 bills in the WA State Legislature aimed at eliminating booth rental and dramatically curtailing small business. Through her advocacy, testimony, marketing efforts and bill analysis she aided support of 1000’s of cosmetologists in WA State to continue to do business with hours & schedule flexibility while paying all licenses and appropriate taxes.

——– and that leads us to now ……September 2019 where Emerson Salon is now a FINALIST for an Association of Washington Business Excellence Award. The ceremony will be held at Benaroya Hall Nov 20. WISH US LUCK! We would love to share the fancy glass award with our community who has supported our success and longevity!! Thank You for all YOUR LOVE!

Show Us The Hair at ISSE2018!

This past Jan 26-29 was the International Salon and Spa Expo in Long Beach, CA.  This event convenes thousands of cosmetology professionals from around the world and is produced by the Professional Beauty Association: “is a non-profit that exists to elevate, unify and serve the beauty industry and the professionals who improve people’s lives.”

Co- owners D’Arcy Harrison and Lancer Forney-McMahon attended 2 days each. Both of them attended classes and presentations to further their skills in haircuts and haircolor. The energy of having that many pros in one area was exciting and overwhelming! So much to do and see!

D’Arcy attended “The Art of Technical Haircutting” by FHI and “Painting Balayage,” with #balaylama Candy Shaw. D’Arcy was methodical in her shopping for new items to amp up her  client experience in the salon for D’Arcy Hair Design.  She walked around the expo hall checking out all the booths on Saturday and came back after class on Sunday to pick up some new tools. She opted for a Sutra Beauty Infrared Blowdryer- “With Sutra’s Ionic Infrared Blow Dryer, infrared heat coats the hair strand deep inside the hair cuticle, heating from the inside of the hair shaft out, while protecting the outer layer of hair. ” D’Arcy also purchased a Hot Tools Curl Bar that uses a curl timer and a digital temperature readout as well as offering a more ergonomic experience for the stylist. To learn more about D’Arcy and request an appointment with her, visit her Website!

Lancer attended “The Art of Razor Cutting and Color Movement” Hands-On class taught by CoCre8 duo Christopher Dove and John Simpson, and has been using techniques learned in this class on many of his clients, with much success!  He also attended a lecture about alopecia given by Jared Reynolds, Biomolecular Chemist, creator and founder of Zenagen Haircare, and is currently testing the Revolve system on his husband, with visible hair regrowth success already! After much learning, some entertainment was in order, and D’Arcy and Lancer enjoyed watching Ted Gibson and his team having fun with models onstage. Ted Gibson is the man behind Angelina Jolie’s hair and numerous other celebrities we’ve all seen on just about every magazine cover!

Day Two for Lancer was all about Wellness. Hair Guy Lancer, P.L.L.C. intends to stay working behind the chair for as long as he wants to, and toward that end, actively takes ownership of his health and body. What a treat to be able to learn from not just hairdressers but other professionals who   understand that our job is very physical, and that ergonomics, nutrition, medication, and other forms of self-care are crucial to our longevity in our industry! First was Healthy Haircutting by Guinness World Hair Cutting record breaker ClipperGuy Ivan Zoot. Ivan taught Lancer how to stay healthy behind the chair, during breaks, and how to deal with height differences between client and stylist, among other things! Lancer already meditates along with practicing Lo Jong mind training through a local Sangha, so he attended a meditation session that was very different (and will stick to his current methods, thank you very much!) but it was good to have a meditative space at the Expo! Lancer already cooks all of the food for himself and his husband at home, but is always looking for food preparation hacks. “Healthy Snacks for Hungry People, by Katrina Goldberg did not disappoint! Katrina showed Lancer how prepping more garlic than you need gives you “savings” for later in the week, and also affirmed that when you have things prepped at home, you’re way more inclined to eat at home as well as to use everything you’ve invested your hard labor into! Last but not least was all about not wrecking your body by using better office furniture, stretching, etc. To learn more about Lancer and request an appointment with him, visit his Website!

Another fun aspect to a convention of this type is the opportunity to interact with exciting hair color, hair tools and product companies selling deals and demonstrating techniques and products. We enjoyed seeing companies we work with in the salon such as Moroccan Oil, Olaplex, Pulp Riot, Pravana, Hot Tools, BABE extensions and many more.

We even ran into Seattle salon owner colleague, Daniel Keane (seen with D’Arcy far left), who owns Serenza Salon & Spa in Burien. He used to educate for us when we used a former color line and it was a joy to see him doing his thing demonstrating tools.

Staying up on current trends, education and technical info is the sign of strong hair designers who care about providing top notch service and quality results.

Join us in the salon and see our honed expertise by booking 24/7 online with emersonsalon.com.

Curly Hair Got You Down?

Here’s a Great Tip- If your curls are limp and not bouncing with joy, a clarifying treatment will perk them right up.
I have curly hair also, and most of my life has been spent fighting it instead of trying to understand and work with it. I use Kevin Murphy’s Maxi Wash exfoliating shampoo once a week to get the product out and give my curls a fresh canvas to work on- it does make a noticeable difference!
Great Styling Tips:
After shampooing and conditioning your hair, leave your hair extremely wet, and apply a leave-in conditioner to soften any hard hold product you might be using in your hair.
  • Apply any styling product to your hair. *If using more than one, be sure to thoroughly apply one product before applying another, unless you can easily cocktail them in your hands (some products separate when trying this.)
  • Don’t skimp- apply ALOT of product to your hair. Make sure to apply your hair product to your hands as if you’re applying lotion to them- get the product through, behind, and around all of your fingers, because curly hair is 360 degrees- your product application ought to be too!
  • Using a very wide toothed comb, comb the product upwards into your hair for added height. *Don’t over-comb, as this will interrupt your natural curl.
  • If your hair is flat on top, and you’d like to add height, clip curly hair sections at the root before blow drying.
  • Speaking of blow drying, ALWAYS use a diffuser attachment on your hair dryer when drying curly hair textures. They make great ones now, and most consumer diffusers are universal.

We Love Color.Me!

colormeimage   In the cosmetology industry, it is important to stay knowledgeable on new technologies in hair color and hair products because innovations in ingredients and trends are ever-changing. To that end, Emerson Salon colorists have started to encounter more and more people with sensitivities and allergies to ammonia and PPD and have wanted to broach this issue for our clienteles.

What is PPD? Phenylenediamine (or PPD) is an organic compound used in hair dyes, as well as in rubber chemicals, textile dyes and pigments. Manufacturers like it because it has a low relative toxicity level, high temperature stability, and chemical and electrical resistance. In other words, it helps the new color stay on your hair despite numerous washings, dryings, and stylings. (from http://www.annmariegianni.com/)

Why is PPD “bad?” The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) notes the following:

-PPD is potentially capable of causing multiple toxic effects following skin contact.

-Data from studies of both humans and animals are sufficient to demonstrate that PPD has potent skin-sensitizing properties.

-Several cases of contact dermatitis have been reported following occupational exposure to dyes containing the chemical.

-Studies have also identified the chemical as the third most common ingredient, after fragrances and preservatives, that can cause contact dermatitis from cosmetics (mainly skin-care products, hair preparations and colorants, and facial makeup products).

colorme5

We listened and have taken on the NEW color line Color.Me Kevin Murphy that is PPD FREE, Ammonia Free, Cruelty free and the ONLY PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) approved hair color line. We are so excited! If you look at the image to the left- you will see a color that prematurely faded on resistant grey hair with ammonia based permanent hair color. Then, observe the after as well as the ZERO fadeage after 3 weeks. WOW! What a difference! Check out more before and afters below!

colorme6colorme4 colorme2

Here is some more information on its features+ ingredients:

  1. Color. Me is a performance driven line which means it is highly predictable and has minimal fade-age.
  2. It has a wonderful rose tea fragrance and barely any chemical smell at all because it is an MEA ammonia derivative and not actual ammonia.
  3. It causes next to no skin irritation and does not stain like ammonia based hair color.
  4.  It contains: shea butter, pomengranate, aloe vera, grapeseed oil, panthenol, almond oil (those with allergies to nuts may be sensitive,) coconut oil and most importantly, HONEY!
  5. The haircolor will never spoil or expire because of the sugars contained in the honey base.
  6. The line is designed for custom formulation and can be made semi, demi or permanent based on the artistic choices of the colorist as well as the desires of the client.
  7.  Has 3 types of bleaches: cream/oil based, ammonia based and non-ammonia lighteners give the professional the control to determine how much damage and lift is incurred on the hair.

Salon Retreat

Mentor and former salon owner Matt Buchan recommended a Partners Retreat for co-owners D’Arcy and Lancer. The point was to “to cover whatever things you feel need to be covered, especially long term stuff that can easily get missed in the day to day grind.”

What a great idea! Now how to execute? Having never attended a business retreat before, let alone organized one, there was much research to be done (Lancer’s forte), and some negotiations to have happen beforehand.

We rented out a room at Impact Hub Seattle, because we wanted to stay local and limit our retreat time to 5 hours. We started out by examining the history and milestones of Emerson Salon. Lancer has been working in the 909 E Pike salon location since 2006- before it became Emerson Salon. D’Arcy came on board shortly afterward, in 2008. Much was shared and learned, and food was to be had! Lunch and snacks were catered in by Specialty’s Seattle. The experience was great! We had so much food, and our luncheon arrived on time, with great packaging. It also included an activity- a word search, which D’Arcy finished first!

SpecialtysLuncheon

We then walked around Occidental Park and played foosball- a real treat for us. Usually our lunches occur between clients and we’ve got 20 minutes to eat, then get back to business.

After we finished all of our agenda items (including adding another one to the list), we needed some quiet time. 15 minutes to be exact, of silence, at the Waterfall Garden park in Pioneer Square. Ahhh, silence! Another luxury we don’t often get in our line of business.

WaterfallPark

We finished our retreat early. Here are the outcomes:

  • We discussed our lease in the building, and we’re happy to say that we’ll be renewing our salon location lease for another 3 years.
  • We went over our Partnership Agreement- you know that document you draft up at the beginning of a business relationship and usually never look at again? Contracts do need tending to, if one uses them in one’s business (which we do!)
  • We also mapped out the transferring of the retail and supplies from Hair Guy Lancer back into the salon. Lancer’s been running the retail and supplies business along with his own service business since 2012, and co-owning and operating Emerson Salon with D’Arcy since 2014, and is happy to now have the opportunity to transfer these assets back into the salon business entity (and also have D’Arcy’s assistance with these tasks.) When this has transacted, you will notice a business name change on your Square receipts!

You’re all stuck with us for at least another 3 years!
