Franz’s New Haircut!

newhaircut
I just got my hair cut with Lancer! It was not a huge change, but big enough to make a difference. I love to style my hair with it up in the back, blended on the sides, and keeping all the length that I’ve worked so hard to grow long. So we cut about an inch off of the crown area cut back the back of my mohawk to be smaller and blended it, and blended the new length on the top to the clippered sides.

To style this we cocktailed a Kevin.Murphy Body.Guard and Hair.Resort in my hair to blow it dry. The Body.Guard helps to moisturize my chemically processed and already naturally dry hair. The Hair.Resort helps provide the hair with beach texture, and goodness knows I love texture in my hair. then we flat iron my hair using Damage.Manager to protect myself from excess heat damage and Night.Rider paste to create a hard hold with texture. Viola! My new look is completed! Thanks Lancer!

Dramatic Draper

This past weekend, a client of mine referred his partner’s son to me for an extreme change haircut. David had been growing his hair out long for about 3 yrs. The reason for the change in his hairstyle is because he was recently cast in his high school production of, “A West Side Story.” This musical is set in the 1950′s in New York City and chronicles the tensions between an extended family of hispanics and some young street boys in a true Romeo and Juliet fashion.

Don Draper

David will be playing the Chief Officer and was instructed by his director to get a “Don Draper” haircut like that of HBO’s Madmen. This show is also set in the 1950′s and 60′s and is a perfect reference for the crisper style that was popular during that time period.

First, I gathered all of David’s long hair at the back of his neck into a ponytail and slowly snipped away his hair (Mom, of course, took pictures to record the big event!). David was able to choose to either keep the hair or send it to Locks Of Love to help young kids with cancer receive a customized wig during their treatment.

Next, I used clippers and trimmers to create the shortness around the nape and back. I typically shampoo the hair at this point before moving on to cutting the rest of the hair with shears. David had some oil buildup on his hair and so I decided to use Maxi.Wash from Kevin.Murphy on his finer to medium density hair to exfoliate out the excess oil with this alpha-hydroxy detoxifying shampoo. A quick rinse with Angel.Rinse from Kevin.Murphy and we were off to finish the look!

At this point, I used texture to blend the medium to longer lengths just above the clipper cut. Lastly, I dropped down the length on top and customized the final style with shears and shear over comb. To style his hair, I used Sticky.Business by Kevin.Murphy which not only helps create a shiny, slick style but also contains antioxidants from Tangerine Peel Oil.

Ready to change, too? Let Emerson Salon wow you with a new you for summer!

Glee’s Chord Overstreet Debuts New Hairstyle – Here’s How To Get It

Glee Chord Overstreet

Glee’s Chord Overstreet recently debuted a shorter darker hairstyle.

Chord told UsMagazine.com, “At the end of the season, I just wanted a haircut, so I cut it all off. I cut the highlights out.”

Chord’s cut brings him much shorter and darker than he was before. With him going so dark, he needs to pre-color his hair to ensure that the color stays and doesn’t appear shallow. With his cut, He took it much shorter than his normal cut. Here he has about an inch to two inches on the sides which are textured to accommodate his natural wave. The top is slightly longer on the top, but still left short on the top so that it is easy to bring up. To style it, use Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider on dry or slightly damp/almost completely dry hair and bring push it up how you want it. The look is very messy, so there is no need to try and have everything perfect. for a slightly stronger hold, substitute the Easy.Rider for Night.Rider.

Catch the season finale May 24th!

Modern Men’s Cut from Behind the Chair

Not only should hair be functional, but, it should be fun. We can have it cut and styled to be business-like. We can have it cut and styled for clubbing, the beach, and recreation. We can have it cut and styled for both. Depending on our careers, jobs, and play, we can have our hair cut to the point where we can easily go from work to play without touching it.

This hair style is a fun style for men that is one such cut. It is new twist on the eighties big trend of disconnection. The sides and back are finger-cut in a square to give it a smooth and tailored look. The top, again, cut in a square, matching the sides, but not blended, are also cut in a square.

After the cut is completed, the sides are pulled out parallel to the floor and deep “V’s” are cut into them to give a great texture to the ends.

The top is then sprayed to stand and a high-lift tint or bleach is painted on, “bayalaged”, to give the stark contrast. To style, use Kevin.Murphy Night.Rider and piece the top out and up. It’s a nice fun look that is easy to style according to your mood or occasion.

If you have a bit of hair and want a different look that will be your own, give us a call and make an appointment.

Get Chris Hemsworth’s(Thor) Hair of the Gods

Born in Melbourne, Australia, Chris Hemsworth burst onto the movie scene as George Kirk, Captain James T. Kirk’s father, in “Star Trek”. He was television in Australia for about five years. He is currently playing Marvel’s “Thor”, with fabulous extensions. Coming soon, he will play Patrick Swayze’s character, Jed Eckert, in a remake of the 1980′s Brat Pack movie, “Red Dawn”.

Chris’ haircut is a great, fabulously versatile cut that can go from business day to dance-club evening with little messing around. The “business” or day time style could easily be influenced by Dan Draper (Jon Hamm) from Mad Men, (See Franz’s post by clicking here!). First, use a bit of the Kevin.Murphy Sticky.Business on the top to make a sharp, clean part and hold it in place. Comb the larger side of the part to the side and a little to the back and push forward just a bit to give some height to the hair. I used to call it a “wave” at the hairline. Take a bit of Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider to the sides and back and comb them smooth and to the back. A great finish is the old-fashioned ducktail the guys wore and were very proud of in the the 50′s and 60′s. This should stay nicely through the day’s work.

A variation on the same style is simply combed straight back and end with the same ducktail over any hair from the crown that may lay in the back. Giving a part and slight wave to either side of the part will add dimension and interest to a possibly mundane looking style.

220px-ChrisHemsworthApr2011

At five o’clock, It’s easy to take your fingers and separate the comb-over just a bit to give a more casual and fun look to the business style. Moving the ducktail with your fingers to fall forward and give a less structured look to the smooth and dressy looking sides and back. One could even further and pull the bangs and sides completely forward for a more “moppish” and hip look.

Because of the versatility of this haircut, it is a recommended and fun to cut.

How To Get The Don Draper Hairstyle

Don Draper (Jon Hamm), the charismatic main character of the hit show, Mad Men, is a man who is in control. In the show, Draper is Creative Director of Manhattan advertising firm Sterling Cooper. For a strong business leaders, he has his hair styled in the classic 1960′s “businessman comb-over”, a style that can add class, style and professionalism to any look.

Don Draper

This can actually be a very simple look to create for yourself. Wash your hair with Alterna Life Volume shampoo and conditioner. Once you towel dry the hair, apply about a quarter size of the Alterna Hemp Hard Hold Gel into your hands and run it through the hair (Gel can be a great product that can be lightweight and provide innovative styling techniques, but avoid overloading the hair with the gel. We don’t our hair to be crunchy.). Once in the hair, use a come to create a part wherever you feel comfortable. From there, simply comb the hair into place; the sides going back and the top going up and to the back. You may find it helpful to loosely comb the hair back as you would like it, then use the edges of your hands to define the front as you see fit.

Don Draper

Finish with a light spray from the Alterna Bamboo Luminous Shine Spray and you’re done! You can dry it by setting your dryer to low speed and continuing to brush it into place, but I prefer to let it air dry to keep the structure you just created. This can be a great hair style for when you’re in a rush and want to look a bit more clean cut. Since this style can be tweaked in many different ways, I recommend spending some time and playing around with your hair; discover exactly how you like to wear it.

Jonathan’s Red Mohawk

Jonathan found our salon online and was visiting Seattle from Denver. He works as a vet tech and requested a red Mohawk. His hair had just gotten long enough to support a hawk, so I began with the cut and we consulted about what kind of red Jonathan wanted. I found that he wanted a more natural red color on his hawk, which complements his natural blond hair as well as his skin tone and eye
color.

It constantly amazes me what a difference a total color change and
haircut can make on a person!

Thanks Jonathan, for visiting us while in Seattle!

Total Color Change

LanceBefore

Lance is a natural blond and has been growing his hair out so that he can eventually have a “Steampunk Pompadour”. He expressed that he wanted to change his hair color to ash black with green streaks, and he had never had Crayon color in his hair. Since he is a natural blond, black might have been too dark for his skin tone. Instead, I customized his color change to a dark ash brown, which suits him much better and looks great with his skin tone and eye color.

LanceAfter2

I created a unique shade of green for the streaks, as green can be tricky to get right; I wanted it to accent his ash brown color. I placed the green along the sides of his hair, so that, as his hair grows into the hairstyle he wants, the color can be maintained and still look awesome, without the look of grow out.

LanceAfter3

Lance is very happy with his new color change and is happy that it looks good in the daylight as well as in a club. Lance is a performer and will be performing in his new persona, “Boi Middler” for the first time this Sunday, April 3rd, in Olympia at “So You Think You Can Drag?” a benefit for Capital City Pride.

Get Ready to “Walk the Moon”

A new band on the scene is Walk the Moon. I soon became entranced by them after being shown the Music video for their song “Anna Sun” from their album, “I Want! I Want!”. Check out the music video below!

The lead singer, Nicholas Petricca, in the video has longer hair that is naturally wavy. Textured hair (meaning wavy or curly) is making a great resurgence and can be a beautiful look to pull off for men. Unfortunately, curls and waves can easily become frizzy or flat without some good old TLC. A great way to do that is with using great products and getting a great cut! Here is a way for you to achieve this look for yourself and learn how to perserve your curls!

If you watch the video, you can see that he has a very flattering haircut for his face shape (there is a great shot at 2:45). It is longer and left slightly curly/wavy to give him a more youthful appearance, and the cut adds more roundness to the shape, evening out his more square face shape. Make sure you talk to your stylist about how you style your hair, since whether it is left curly or made straight or even if you style it both ways can influence the design of your haircut.

anna-sun

To style your hair, I would recommend using the Alterna Bamboo Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner. Once you’re out of the shower, dry your hair by lightly squeezing the hair, rather than roughly drying it. Doing that can help you preserve the shape of your natural curl which we can enhance and further perserve with wonderful products. I would recommend using a small amount of the Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider to prevent frizz and give it definition. Try to apply it on the hair, not through the curls (unless you want to break them up a bit). Then you can let it air dry as you go on with your day!

Here is a great Podcast from Kevin.Murphy showing you how to use Easy.Rider on Curly Hair:
