A Test of Time: Moroccanoil

Since the early Egyptians, oils have proved to be an effective remedy for many problems, Moroccanoil is one hair care product (among other oils sold here at Emerson Salon) that you can rely on that does just that. Moroccanoil is an all-natural hair treatment, composed of vitamin rich Argan oil, and is good for all hair types. From curly to straight hair types, to those of us with damaged hair, Moroccanoil will help you restore your hair to its natural glory. Featured in the fall issue of Out (an LGBT friendly magazine) this is what they had to say about Moroccanoil, “Celebrities and industry experts are buzzing about Moroccanoil for its ability to instantly heal damaged hair, restore it’s luster, and make it silkier to the touch.” Among the ability to breathe life back into damaged or unruly hair, Moroccanoil also has the strength to stand up to your curling iron, flat iron, and blow-dryer. If you are looking for a great hair product for your specific hair needs then look no further; Moroccanoil has you covered from root to tip.

How to Get Alex Kingston’s Hair from Doctor Who

river-song-alex-kingston-3

The actress Alex Kington, most noted for her role on ER, has been an ongoing character on the British television show Doctor Who. As some of you may know, I am a big Doctor Who fan. With the mid-season finale of airing a few weeks ago, revealing many details to the mysterious character, River Song (Alex Kingston), I couldn’t help but talk about some of her hair that has appeared so far.

tumblr_ljvgp7UGU61qat2ico1_500

Kingston is asked to wear many variations to her naturally curly hair. For enhancing curls, I always turn to MoroccanOil and Kevin.Murphy. MoroccanOil Oil Treatment will hydrate her curls and then dried gently with MoroccanOil Curl Enhancer to add hold and define her curls. This combination will help reduce frizz, control curl, and hydrate the hair.

Kingston’s hair throughout the series is always as big as the mysteries she hides throughout the series. To get this volume in your hair gently blow dry it with a diffuser attachment to your blowdryer. This will weaken the flow of air from your dryer thusly reducing stress put on the curls. Use the diffuser to dry the hair upwards to maintain volume.

Use these tips to get your hair ready for adventure!

Saying Goodbye to Oprah

Oprah’s last season is over and we salute her devotion to true beauty and education here at Emerson Salon. We wish we could give her a going away present as a send off but she has everything! Including a network, O.W.N.!

If we ever had the privilege of doing Oprah’s hair (her stylist Andre does a fantastic job of transforming her daily) we would probably use the MoroccanOil line. We’re sure she would greatly appreciate how the MoroccanOil company contributes to a women’s co-op that cultivated the argan nut for the product line. The dry oil has tons of UV inhibitors to protect color and does not build up on hair like silicone serums you can buy at drugstores.

Oprah likes to wear her hair a number of ways so here are some tips on what to use on African American textured hair:

To straighten: Cocktail the MoroccanOil Oil Treatment with the Hydrating Style Cream. It gives ample moisture for smoothing hair when blowdrying and flat ironing. Moroccan Oil is a treatment line so when using high heat implements it is the perfect way to style and condition simultaneously.

For natural curl: Use the MoroccanOil Intense Curl Cream for ultimate frizz control and moisture when blow dry diffusing.

For added moisture and conditioning: Use MoroccanOil Moisturizing Mask for 10 minutes on towel dried hair once a week. Easy to apply and no major wait time so you can get on with your day.

Thank you Oprah for all your many years of gab, charity and education. You have made us better.

My Favorite Products: The MoroccanOil Oil Treatment

A few weeks ago I lifted my hair from a medium brown with red streaks to a light blond, attempting to get a color that was closer to my natural. It ended up becoming a color correction, but the results were gorgeous! But the processes put on my already very processed hair left it wanting a bit of TLC. This is when I turn to MoroccanOil products.

The MoroccanOil Oil Treatment is my best friend. It not only is a great prep product to compliment almost any style, but it conditions and strengthen’s over-processed hair. An added perk for anyone who doesn’t like spending a lot of time drying their hair in the morning, MoroccanOil Oil Treatment reduces drying time!

After having used it for two weeks religiously, my hair feels noticeably healthier and stronger. I recommend this product to anyone who is concerned about damage or wants beautiful smooth hair.

Hair Tip of the Day: Protein and Moisture

Many things can affect the quality and health of your hair, such at what you eat, how much stress you have, your health, and a myriad of other factors. But when it comes down to the bottom line your hair needs two things to be healthy: Protein and Moisture.

dry-hair
If you have curly or wavy hair, you may notice that your hair can get dry easily. Typically, curly and wavy hair types need that extra bit of TLC when it comes to moisture. This is easy to remedy by stocking up on some key products. Look to the MoroccanOil line for salvation! The entire line of products is crammed with moisture to enrich the quality of your hair. If your hair is extremely dry from damage (be it, environmental, heat, or chemical damages), I strongly suggest picking up the MoroccanOil Intense Hydrating Mask.

Come in and check out MoroccanOil Products today!

Fighting Dry Scalp

During these cold winter months, many clients complain that their scalp feels dry, tight, and itchy. This is usually due to inside heating and its lack of moisture in the air from heating coils, radiators, etc. In order to deal with this seasonal issue there are a few things you can do:

Massaging-Your-Scalp-Stimulates-Hair-Growth

  • Purchase a humidifier in order to infuse the air in your home with steam moisture. The moisture will help to eleviate the tight scalp with continued use over time. This is also great for people who complain of sinus problems as it can aid to lubricate and open airways.
  • Use a shampoo and conditioner used to balance scalp conditions. Try Balancing Wash by Kevin Murphy which uses green tea and essential oils or try using Life Solutions by Alterna. These products are specifically designed to treat the scalp and its issues. When shampooing, make sure you scrub your scalp aggressively in order to aid in removing dead skin cells in addition to increasing blood flow to the follicle.
  • If these solutions do not work for you, book a scalp treatment at Emerson Salon using Moroccan Oil Dry Scalp treatment. It uses argan nut oil in addition to salicylic acid to battle tight scalp and dandruff. Salicylic acid opens clogged pores/ follicles and eliminates underlying bacteria that could cause follicle blockage in the future. This treatment can be added on to a haircut or shampoo blowout, includes a vigorous scalp massage and then is allowed to penetrate the scalp for 5-10 minutes. It is essential to shampoo out the treatment after as salicylic acid is not intended to be left on the head. This treatment will last anywhere from 3-4 weeks.
  • Use a styling product that aids your scalp in maintaining moisture balance like Anti Gravity. This oil free volumizer is great for medium to fine density hair and its botanical and essential oils help to equalize the oil/sebacous glands of the scalp.

Once you have a healthy scalp you will be building conditions which are essential to creating and maintaining healthy hair. Every detail counts. Having a scalp issue? Book with a consultation with an Emerson stylist today!

Stress and Your Hair- What You Should Know

Our hair is a very important part of our bodies, in more ways than one. Sure, it’s gorgeous and can be an excellent accessory, and can also be a great way of expressing your personal style, but did you know your hair is also a great indicator of your overall physical and emotional health?

Your hair can be one of the first and best signs of how your body’s doing. When you’re healthy, balanced and relaxed, your hair will be lustrous and shining. However, when you’ve been ill, or are stressed out, there can be many negative effects on your hair. “I once had a friend whose hair was going grey because she had a really stressful job,” says John, one of our stylists, “She left to go to a different job, and right away the graying stopped.” If we’re under a lot of stress, either mentally or physically, our hair can get dull and even start to fall out.

Typically, when we go through a period of high stress, our hair will go into the telogen phase, which means it stops growing, and about three months later, it will start to fall out. So if you notice an abnormal amount of hair loss, think back a couple months- it’s likely that you’ll find that you had been going through something stressful at that time. Hair can also get thinner and fall out when you are going through a great physical stressor such as childbirth, illness or surgery, since the body takes energy away from growing hair to focus on healing.

Fortunately, there are a lot of easy ways to combat stress and keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful. The easiest thing to keep yourself balanced is regular exercise and a good diet. Vitamins are really important for the health of your hair, so go heavy on foods rich in Vitamin B, like greens, fish, cheese and eggs; Vitamin A, like spinach, broccoli, tomatoes and melons; and Vitamin C, like citrus fruits and strawberries. All of these, as well as vitamin supplements, will keep your body balanced and keep your hair looking rich, as will foods rich in calcium, like cheese, milk and yogurt.

There are also many products that can help revamp your hair. “Conditioning treatments like Kevin Murphy’s Born Again and Staying Alive can help stressed hair by making sure your hair and scalp is in balance,” says our stylist Lancer. “You should definitely tell your hair dresser what’s going with your hair- hair professionals are the best treatments for damaged or unhappy hair.”

Stress will come out in different ways for people, and can be remedied by different treatments. “When I’m stressed, my scalp gets itchy,” says Andrea, our receptionist. “John just did a Moroccan Oil Dry-No-More Scalp treatment on me- and gave me a killer head massage- and I feel great!”

Whether your hair needs a boost of life to get it going again, or if you just want to make sure it’s at it’s healthiest, our stylists are always here to answer your questions and make sure your hair is always as beautiful as it can be. Give us a call and make your appointment today!

Moroccan Oil Wows Hollywood!

Moroccan Oil has quickly become a favorite product of our clients at Emerson Salon. We love the product line because it is great for most everyone’s hair…and IT WORKS!

rosario-dawson yes 2

Moroccan Oil also has a very diverse celeb fan base! Rosario Dawson loves Moroccan Oil. It treats and tames her hair texture, which can be dry, coarse, and frizzy otherwise. Beyonce loves her natural intense curl but not the frizz. Moroccan Oil’s Intense Curl Cream works for her by moisturizing with the key ingredient, Argan Oil, while controlling the frizz without leaving greasy residue in her hair.

Charlize

Moroccan Oil was widely used by stylists during the 2010 Oscars. Moroccan Oil’s Glimmer Shine Spray was widely utilized by stylists to create the high shine that polished the red carpet hair styles they created.

Anna Kendrick

For Anna Kendrick, Moroccan Oil’s Styling Cream worked to keep her soft, romantic hairstyle looking great by the Argan Oil- infused moisture and reduction of static and frizz. Blondes can have it too! Celebrity stylist Enzo Angileri used the new Moroccan Oil Light to keep Charlize Theron’s fine, blonde hair shiny, smooth and natural by drying it into her hair to create a perfect palette of workable texture that looked natural and healthy.

Other celebrities who use Moroccan Oil products include Salma Hayek, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Rachel Zoe, January Jones, Jennifer Lopez, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Jordin Sparks, Pink, Lea Michele and many, many more!

Summer Hair: Looking Beautiful in the Sun and Heat

image

Pretty soon spring will turn into golden summer here in Seattle. We have earned our extended days of sun with the amount of rain and cold we’ve received lately!! So now it is time to think about how to revamp hair color and style your hair for warmer temperatures.

To start, one great approach is adding highlights and refreshing faded color to get geared up for summer. If you want softness and an overall lighter color we think a super blended foiling technique on the upper portion of the hair creates a great effect that is both striking and natural. The lighter pieces can be finely woven strategically into the hair and placed diagonally to avoid the look of “little lines” of hair color. We recommend consulting an Emerson Salon stylist to find out how we can best add dimension to your hair color.

If a bolder and brigher effect is desired we recommend a bleach balayage that lifts a minimum of 2 -3 levels. This painting technique diffuses the color saturation at the root and saturates towards the mid-ends. Then the hair can be toned to a soft beige blond, medium brown color, etc depending on preference and individual coloring. Faded darker hair color can be enriched with a gold based color that will increase shine and reflectivity. We recommend the Beige Blonde series from Italy Hairfashion because it adds depth without overly darkening the hair. An added bonus to using this color line is the use of plant ingredients with built in UV protection (bisabolo, helianthus annus and more.)

oilbottle

Eventually, trips to the lake and beach areas will be a high priority in the summer. Whether you are doing outdoor sports or just soaking in some rays, protecting your hair from the harmful UV rays of the sun will be key to retaining your hair’s moisture and manageability. The drier the hair the frizzier it can become in addition to fading color. To protect your hair during these activities, try using Moroccan Oil before going in the sun. Consider it sunblock for your hair! Its chock full of UV inhibitors and antioxidants and also makes the hair very soft and shiny.

1309

In the warmer temperatures, no one wants to be blow drying when they are already hot and sweaty. A great alternative is using Kevin Murphy’s Hair Resort on damp hair and let it air dry. It creates a beachy wave texture even on the most stubborn straight hair! Its great to come home from the beach, take a shower and throw it in your hair and go about your day. Plus, loose waves are all the rage and mean less work for you.

We look forward to summer and helping our clients freshen their look for the season. Empower yourself and protect your hairstyle while enjoying Seattle’s rays of light!
