A Dance of the Devil

These past weeks we’ve seen the wider release of the film Black Swan directed by Darren Aronofsky starring Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder. Aronofsky’s stellar resume credits include the Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream, and the Fountain so it is not a surprise that critics are hailing this top notch film as a must see this season.

The movie follows Portman as a ballerina who is given the one in a liftetime chance to head her first ballet in Swan Lake. Her struggles with her overbearing mother (Hershey) are chronicled throughout the film as she battles to embrace a darker side for her debut role. Standing in her way is the bold new balllerina, Lily (Kunis) who is gunning for Portman’s position in the ballet.

At the premiere of the film, we get to see Natalie in all her elegance with her long tresses released from its tight ballerina bun. This haircolor is a combination of a darkest brown all over color at the root and medium and light neutral brown balayaged highlights. Styling this red carpet look is a snap! Using Moroccan Styling Oil, apply to towel dried hair following a Kevin.Murphy Experience with Maxi.Wash Detox Shampoo and Born.Again Treatment conditioner. Blow dry the hair straight with attention to creating volume at the top of the head by holding the large round brush above the section. Once completely dry, take a 1 to 1.5 ” flat iron to large vertical sections 2-3″ from the root (think of creating a curly bow on a gift with scissors) Use tension as you slowly curve the flat iron down the section making sure to leave 1″ at the end uncurled. This creates a sexy wave/curl that tends to look more modern than using a curling iron all over the head.

Embrace your inner Black Swan and get deviously sexy with us at Emerson Salon!

Once a Duckling, Now a Swan.

Black Swan is the much hyped about new movie that is wowing viewers with with creepy new plot. Personally, psychological thrillers are some of my favorite movies and given the movie industry’s move towards more commercial fare I haven’t found many movies to catch me, but Black Swan was a pleasant surprise. While Black Swan is an exceptionally well crafted film, Natalie Portman’s compelling performance is what really takes it to the next level.

NatBald

Over the years, the always beautiful and captivating Ms. Portman, has taken numerous hair styles, from shaved bald to classic medium, sexy waves. Yet, no matter what, she always has looked fabulous and healthy. That is until she starved herself for her role in this movie.

To better fit with her role as Nina, Natalie Portman’s long hair is portrayed as lifeless, dull, and thinning. Many people lack proper nutrition and yes, this not only shows up all over our bodies, but also atop our heads. While a level of dulling of your hair’s luster and thickness comes from aging or environmental factors, many people don’t realize the impact of proper nutrition on their hair. The right food is essential for your hair’s health! For a more indepth look at the right kind of nutrition of beautiful hair, check out these blog posts we have done previously on the subject here: hair and nutrition.

NatStarving

If your hair has been losing some of its luster another important step is to confer with your stylist. Be sure to tell them about your what you have been noticing with your hair, as well as any factors that may be relevant. Some possibilities on what may be affecting your hair’s health include what products you are using at home for your hair care, any health concerns such as medications regularly taken, recent illnesses, or recent surgeries. Once you and your stylist zero in on a possible cause, we can help you identify steps to help you achieve the healthiest hair possible.

NatWavy

In this photo, Natalie’s hair is again vibrant, shiny, and her color has depth. Here she sports a bob that has chunky, textured layers. This style can be achieved by blow drying the hair with Kevin Murphy’s Anti Gravity first, to give it hold and structure. The top of her hair is dried smoothly, following her part and head shape. The mid-lengths and ends of her hair are tousled/scrunched as it is dried. Once the hair is completely dry, a flat iron can create the angled bend on the ends of the hair. For extra oomph, you can back-brush the mid-lengths a bit to break up/ruffle the texture for this very modern style.

Check out the trailer for this great movie, I highly recommend it!

STAY ON THE GRID

The follow up sequel to the 1982 cult sci-fi classic, Tron, is releasing December 17th starring Jeff Bridges, Olivia Wilde, Garrett Hedlund and directed by Joseph Kosinski. The film follows Kevin Flynn’s (Bridges, who also plays his younger self/avatar Clu) son Sam as he looks into his fathers mysterious disappearance. In the process, Sam is sucked into the technological world himself. There, Sam meets his father’s computer program/confidante/protector, Qorra (Wilde.)

To get into the role of a sci-fi warrior, Olivia researched Buddhist warriors to improve her physical performance. Her research also inspired ideas on how the character of Qorra would look. No flowy, luscious hair- Olivia suggested to the director to make a modern version of Joan of Arc with shorter hair. This hair cut is styled similarly to a classic inverted Vidal Sassoon bob. This haircut uses a technique in the back of the cut called “graduation” Graduation is a type of layering that builds weight to a haircut and allows the style to softly fall around the skull shape (this is great for finer hair.) In addition, the bangs added to the haircut are asymmetrical to enhance the character’s ultra modern look. Asymmetrical means that the lengths on both sides are not even but remain balanced to the face and rest of the cut.

Qorra’s haircolor is a dark black hue which blends into her form fitting costume with its illuminated, flowing lines. This look can be achieved through permanently coloring all over, color correcting the hair darker, or through using a fade out demipermanent (lasts 6-9 weeks: will leave a stain due to the depth a black hue.) We recommend using the newly reformulated Luxury Wash ( for thicker color treated hair) by Kevin Murphy to extend the life of your color with the finest quality natural ingredients (including jojoba, linseed and mango.) Style with Antigravity which holds the style but adds an additional bonus of aiding to balance oil production at the scalp.

Stay on the style grid in real life and book an appointment with an Emerson stylist today!

Angelina Jolie in the Tourist

This December 10th, the international thriller, “The Tourist,” releases starring Angeline Jolie, Johnny Depp, Timothy Dalton and Paul Bettany. The story follows Depp’s character after he travels to Italy to mend a broken heart when he is suddenly mistaken for another man. Angeline Jolie’s character, Elise, accompanies Frank (Depp) as he is chased and hunted throughout the Italian streets and waterways.

Angelina_Jolie_on_689f

There are some key differences to Angelina’s hairstyle that have been altered with cut and color. Angelina’s signature dark long locks have been subtly lightened with medium beige and light beige tones. Not too warm and not too cool. In order to keep this technique subtle and blended, it is important that the hair is balayaged in small sections with the medium beige all over the head. Once complete, the lighter beige blond can be created through wisking bleach lightener into the hair around the face after the over all balayge is complete and dry. Remember: If you have any previous color history, it might be necessary to use bleach to lift dark color or perform a color correction darker if your hair is mostly light. We recommend using the Advanced Color Protection Shampoo and Conditioner line that accompanies our Italy Hairfashion color line to maintain these colors prior to bleaching.

Angelina’s haircut maintains her hair’s fullnes and length through creating soft, heavy bangs and a blended Brigitte Bardot layer cut. This is where the heaviness through the top of the head is eliminated and lightly texturized on the ends. A great product to try on this style is Blowout Creme by Alterna Caviar and Texturizing Glaze by Alterna. This cocktails aids to protect your hair from high heat during a round blush blowout but also helps to hold the style once complete.

TIP: When round brushing, make sure to elevate the hair above the section to create volume in addition to allowing the hair to cool on the brush before releasing the brush.

Don’t be a tourist with your own hair! Get empowered! Use these tips and become a style destination expert.

Mirren Goes “RED”

RED is a movie that follow Frank Moses (played by Bruce Willis), retired CIA operative who is the new target of the CIA’s assassination plots. He and his fellow retirees team up to uncover the truth and save their lives. This action/comedy is something I highly recommend seeing. It opened on October 15th and has a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 170 reviews with an average rating of 6.3/10. Go see it before it leaves theaters!

10012010_HelenMirrenRed
One of the retirees is Victoria, retired MI6 assassin, played by the wonderful Academy Award winner Helen Mirren. She has he hair cut to fall just at her jaw, making this much more of a low maintenance haircut. She was further given layers to reduce bulk and weight while giving a bit more shape to her curls and wave. Her bangs are cut to fall at her brow and slope to connect with the upper layers of the main body.

For her color, they used two different levels of blond to give her a very soft depth to her color. The lighter blond is placed in such a way that it makes if that more defining of the curl. Also with this light blond color, her eyes are made to seem just that more blue. Blond hair and blue eyes is a classic combination, though whenever going blond, you should consult with your stylist to make sure that it will work for your skin tone.

mirrenred
To achieve the style that Mirren’s hair was given, one could start by using Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity then finger drying the hair. The hair would then be curled with a large barreled curling iron and then set to cool with large velcro-rollers. Once it has all cooled you can remove the rollers and brush out with a boar-bristle brush and finish it off with a spray of Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray.

Interested in making this look yours? Come into Emerson today and have a consultation with one of our stylist!

Warning! Though this trailer does show many more shots of Mirren’s hair, it also contains some violent behavior.

Burlesque Goes Blonde

The history of burlesque style theater is tied to its inherent meaning which means, “to send up,” or otherwise create a parody or exaggeration. Throughout the 20th Century we have come to know burlesque as slow stripteases with sexy dance numbers as seen in the movie Moulin Rouge. Our modern version would be the Pussy Cat Dolls who have been seducing audiences in LA with their sultry versions of old and new songs.

Soon we will be enjoying a star studded cast in the film,”Burlesque,” that releases Thanksgiving starring Cher, Christina Aguilera, Stanley Tucci, Julianne Hough, Kristin Bell, Alan Cumming and Eric Dane. The film follows Aguilera’s character as she arrives in the big city ready to take on the world as she cocktail waitresses and then auditions for the coveted chance of being in the burlesque spotlight.

For this role, Christina dons a long blond wig in the beginning of the film to reflect her naivete and innocence. Later, her character cuts her hair into a blunt bob and lightens her hair to pale blond to show off her brave, sultry and bold performances.

If you intend to be as light as her shade we recommend the following:

  • Book a color consultation with an Emerson Salon Stylist. If you have naturally lighter hair, this will be an easy all over color going lighter. If you have previously colored or medium brown or darker hair, this will be a bleach and tone or color correction service.
  • Deep condition your hair for 2 weeks before lightening your hair. Use Moroccan Oil Moisturizing Masque for 5 minutes after shampooing for up to 2X a week leading up to your color service. Lightening can cause moisture loss, breakage and frizz so the more you prep your hair for the service the better off your hair will be in the long run.
  • Factor in ongoing maintenance and support products into your budget for the service. We recommend Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner by Alterna Caviar for gluten, paraben and sulfate free care for your new shade. It has built in violet tones with optical brighteners that will keep your blond hue from fading into a brassy tone. Also, bleach and tone retouches are cheaper than the all over service but must be scheduled every 4-6 weeks to keep up the look as it grows out.
  • Some great products for styling:Alterna Radiant Smoothing Lotion which contains Rhodiola extract (antioxidants) and this product cuts down on blow dry time by 50% (which is great for porous hair that dries slower.) To finish, use Alterna Rapid Repair Spray which contains vitamin C and shine to control frizz and fly-aways.

Ever since Chicago and Dream Girls released, we have enjoyed more and more movie musicals like this one. Elevate your sense of style like these films do and come on in to Emerson Salon today!

Janet Jackson in Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls”

The actor/director Tyler Perry is coming out with his film adaptation of the theatrical play “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf,” but with the shorter title ,”For Colored Girls.” The play was originally written in 1975 by Ntozake Shange as a “choreopoem” of 20 poems and was first staged in California.

The film stars Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg, Loretta Divine, Thandi Newton, Kerry Washingston, Phylicia Rashad, Macy Gray, Anika Noni Rose, and Kimberly Elise. The film follows these women as they deal with issues of domestic violence, infidelity, aborton and many others.

for_colored_girls_poster01

In this film,Janet Jackson plays a strong, powerful, magazine editor who has a crisis within her marriage. Janet has had many hairstyles throughout her long singing and acting career. For this film, she cut her hair into a a slicked back, super coiffed and short hairstyle. This haircut leaves a lot of length on top and is layered into the clippered sides and nape.

People Janet Jackson

Some great products for this hairstyle would be Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy to achieve soft control with minimal frizz. Apply and slowly brush the hair away from the face with a cushion bristle brush (see Mason Pearson.) Easy Rider is a suitable product for African American or thick, curly hair because the shea butter helps condition and moisturize the naturally dry texture. For those with finer hair: we recommend styling this look with Caviar Working Spray as it gives flexible hold and control without weighing the style down.

We are sure this movie will speak to your heart, so go see it! Want a stylist to do the same? Book an appointment today and one of our stylists will listen and recommend a style perfectly suited to you!

Emma Stone’s Eye-Catching Hair in Easy A

-4

Easy A is a smart new romantic comedy that came out pulling in an impressive 7.8/10 on IMDB and 85% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The story follows Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) as she sees how far a little white lie will go. Mirroring the classic tale of the Scarlett Letter, Olive’s lie quick spins out of control turning her life and the lives of everyone she knows upside down. This move is extremely well written and I highly recommend it if you are looking for some light-hearted laughs this weekend.

In the movie, Emma Stone’s hair is left long and falls below her shoulders with some layering that gives it a lot more movement. She is given some curl and a swooping bang. Its really a fantastic cut. All of this gives the whole cut a great deal of body and movement that catches the eye.

-3

Another thing catching people’s eye would be her great color. Her color is a nice orange red color that not only compliments her green eyes, but also gives her that Fiery sex appeal that only red can provide. Red can be tricky to pull off sometimes. You should take into account how light or dark you want to be, and whether you want to be a more warm red, or a cooler red. I like to take eye color into account when choosing the right red for someone.

As for styling, from where her fringe falls and above are left relatively, but not completely straight, by blow drying with a medium or large sized round brush. Everything else is curled by first spraying with a hairspray then with a large barreled curling iron taking medium sized sections and curling up and away from the face to give the hair more volume and body. Once curl and cooled, lightly brush the curls into the big wavy curls that she has, being sure not to fully brush out all of the curl.

Thinking about getting a hair style or color like Emma Stone in Easy A? Swing on by Emerson Salon and get a free consultation from one of our skilled stylists on how you can make this look yours.

Case 39′s Horrifyingly Gorgeous Hair

Now that October is upon us, all the best horror and thriller movies get released in anticipation of Halloween. Releasing this week is Case 39 starring Renee Zelweger, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper and Jodelle Ferland. The story follows Zelweger’s character, Emily, an overloaded social worker who is assigned to monitor the domestic abuse case of Lily (Jodelle.) Soon, Emily is in charge of Lily’s care and comes to realize that there is more to taking care of this young girl than bedtime stories and snack time. Jodelle is a young 15 yr. old actress with tons of tv and film experience. She has starred in Stephen King’s Kingdom Hospital, the films Silent Hill and Twilight’s Eclipse.

JodelleDream1

Jodelle’s hair is absolutely gorgeous yet simple. If you have hair that is below the shoulders, you can create a similar wavy style to hers with the right products. Jodelle has finer hair and if you do too we recommend applying Motion Lotion Curl Enhancer by Kevin Murphy after the shower on hair that is 60% dry. If you have thicker, curly hair we recommend applying Hydrating Styling Cream to add additional moisture and shine. Braid the hair in 2 pigtails and allow to dry. (Make sure to keep the braid loose in order to avoid creating frizz or excessively tight wave.) Once dry, undo the braid carefully and spray with Kevin Murphy’s Session Spray lightly and scrunch. Toss your head up and down and your hair is casually styled and ready for a day of shopping, lunch with the ladies or an afternoon meeting. These two products are wonderful because they both protect the hair with built in UV filters and suncreen to protect your hair from the drying factors of the sun. Remember, just because it is getting chillier does not mean the sun is any less damaging!

Just like Case 39, this hairstyle is unexpected and surprising. Surprisingly simple. Try it out yourself or book online with Emerson salon to help you achieve it!

Diane Lane in Secretariat

In 1973, the only horse to ever win the horse racing Triple Crown (Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes) was a talented chestnut named Secretariat. The phenomenal horse was owned and bred by Penny Chennery Tweedy (a Virginia bred housewife who later became the president of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association.) Her guidance in raising and training the young horse is chronicled in the new movie soon to be released by Disney (starring Diane Lane and John Malkovich.)

secretariat-movie-image-diane-lane

Diane Lane’s hair in the movie is a departure from the dimensional brunette she wears in real life. As in many movies, the overall blond hair she has as Penny Tweedy is most likely a wig. Nevertheless, if you are looking to achieve this style or hue of sandy blond hair- here’s how!

  • If you have naturally colored hair (virgin hair) This is an all over color going lighter service and depending on how how deep your hair color. If you have darkest brown to black hair, it will be necessary to bleach the hair as hair color will not be able to achieve consistent light blond results.
  • If you have colored hair: This is a color correction service using bleach lightener and toner (hair color that gets rid of unwanted tones) and can be damaging and labor intensive. We recommend committing to a permanent darker hair color for a minimum of 6 months as changing hair colors often can cause lots of stress to your hair and wallet. Otherwise, try a semi or demi-permanent version of a darker color if you are unsure as to how long you would like to keep it.
  • If you have extremely light hair all over: This will be a simple all over color using demi permanent or permanent hair color and can actually make your hair feel more conditioned as adding pigment to over-processed hair can give it more moisture, shine and manageability. This service would bring the hair color down only 1-2 levels and will not require a “tint back” or color correction going darker.

We recommend using color maintenance shampoo and conditioner like Alterna Caviar’s Blond series. They have a slight lavender hue that tones out brassiness and will baby the hair with anti-aging seasilk. This series is also paraben free, sulfate free, and gluten free.

Diane’s hairstyle in the movie can be achieved after towel drying and applying Anti Gravity setting lotion and oil free volumizer. Dry the hair with your fingers until bone dry. Using a curling iron, curl the hair in 2″ sections all over the head. Once cooled, spray the curls lightly with Working Spray by Alterna and then brush out the hair with a boar bristle cushion brush once a side part is created. This will smooth out the curls into waves and can be finished by running Kevin Murphy’s Easy Rider anti frizz creme along part and ends. This classic style is great for work, weddings, or dinners out on the town!

We look forward to enjoying the perseverance of a horse, its owner and the nation that rooted him on. Being driven and ambitious never goes out of style!
