Get J-Lo’s Dance Floor Ready Hair

Pop icon, Jennifer Lopez is back on the scene! With her newest single, “On the Floor” (check it out below), she rocks a few different hair styles. She wears her long textured hair down to whip it about, and her more elegant updo. In this post, we are going to focus in on her style with her hair let down.

Jennifer-Lopez-On-The-Floor-02

This first picture, the cover of the single album, is very similar to that of the hair in the video. Here she is given lots of layers that allow us to see more movement when she dances in the music video.
She doesn’t have fringe, but she has some facial framing to allow for texture around the face. Her color is highlighted with Balayage using color to create a golden borwn color with cool gold highlights. This helps emphasize the texture her hair is given

As for styling, I would use Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity in her damp hair to give volume to the hair and the Alterna Texturizing Glaze for texture. When it is almost dry, I would grab my large round brush and start to blow dry the hair. At her front hairline, be sure to blowdry with the round brush at the base of the hair to give yourself the volume she has at front. After each section of hair was dry and warm, I would twist the hair off of the brush and let it cool in a coil. Once all the hair is dry, break up the curl with your fingers and sprinkle in a bit of the Kevin.Murphy Powder.Puff at the base of the front hairline and throughout the ends to create volume and further emphasize texture.

The Rockin’ Hair of Jessie J

Jessie-J-Haircut

Jessie J, UK singer of such songs like “Do it like a Dude” and “Price Tag” has a great look she is sporting. Not only are her songs toping the UK charts, but her hair is top-notch as well. You can listen to her song, Price Tag, at the bottom of the post.

Jessie J’s color is simple and straightforward. She is brought down to a black color that has a bit more blue added into it. I usually caution people against dying their hair black, as a good rule of thumb is to stay within about 2-3 shades of your natural color (though there are always exceptions!). IF you’re contemplating having black hair, ask yourself if it is really Black that you want, or if you just want to be noticeably darker. The black color really works for Jessie J, since she rocks a dark eye make-up palette and makes sure to use a proper foundation to avoid looking washed out.

JessieJ

As for her cut, it is an a-line bob (meaning it is shorter in the nape, becoming longer in the front). Her bangs are cut so they come down right to the eyes. Combined with her dark eye make-up, this makes her eyes really pop. The fringe is also cut al the way to her temples. This helps keep her face open, since her forehead and brow are hidden by her bangs. All together, Jessie J pulls off a Beautiful, simple and clean look that is to die for.

Here is her video for Price Tag! Enjoy!

Picture of the Day: Ellie Goulding at Neumos!

ellie

Last Monday night, I went to go see Ellie Goulding perform at Neumos. Ellie sang beautifully and was adorable as ever. Her hair is lifted to a very light, cool blond color. Her haircut is very textured, with many shorter layers towards the face blending into the longer lengths at the bottom. She also has bangs that swoop from the left side of her face to the right.

I recommend starting with Alterna Caviar Volume shampoo and conditioner to start the style, the blowdry in some of the Alterna Hemp Texture Glaze to create a look that emphasizes your texture, but keeps the hair movable.

Think this look is for you? Come into Emerson Salon to get your new look today!

Enjoy this video of Ellie Goulding singing Writer at the concert.

The Sexy Independent Hair of Keri Hilson

I have always loved hip hop and recently there have been a few female artists who have come out with singles that show a Girl Power, No Boys Allowed, Femme Fatal attitude and I love it! They might not always be the best show of true hip hop and R&B talent but they get the job done. I know I’m singing along!

Independence is the sexiest quality women should want to poses. Between Brittany Spears, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, and Keri Hilson, a new attitude for females is emerging, and redefining what is sexy! Don’t get me wrong they aren’t standing up for huge women’s rights issues but I do feel they are encouraging a different attitude for women, one that is important.

Above all they are showing us a different kind of hair fashion for this new attitude! You don’t have to stick to natural tones and basic cuts to be fabulous. Keri Hilson rocks a bright blond, Barbie-esk hair-do on her, No Boys Allowed album cover. This color is obviously not natural at a lightest ash blond but she looks amazing nonetheless. This color transformation from her natural level hair color was definitely a multiple step process with a colorist. Unfortunately, you can’t get this blond in one short visit to the salon. However, with preparation, patience you may be able to get to that perfect color.

She pulls this color off by having her eyebrows lightened to just a few shades darker then her new blond and switches up her make up to blond friendly tones. Her skin tone and eye color also helps her look great as a blond. The cut is pretty basic and versatile but is made fun and funky with curl. It’s a very blended round layered hair cut that is above her shoulders. The trick to this hair style is that it has a lot of layers but they are all blended very well so they can be curled and worn in many different ways.

To get this type of curl you would need to wrap small sections of hair, away from your face, around the outside of your curling iron. Then run your fingers through it with a cream like Alterna’s Texture Glaze. A product like this will give a little hold to the curl, while smoothing down frizz. But remember it’s all about the attitude. Her care free, girl empowerment attitude sets this look off!

I will leave you with my new favorite Girl Power anthem, Buyou by Keri Hilson!

Get Ready to “Walk the Moon”

A new band on the scene is Walk the Moon. I soon became entranced by them after being shown the Music video for their song “Anna Sun” from their album, “I Want! I Want!”. Check out the music video below!

The lead singer, Nicholas Petricca, in the video has longer hair that is naturally wavy. Textured hair (meaning wavy or curly) is making a great resurgence and can be a beautiful look to pull off for men. Unfortunately, curls and waves can easily become frizzy or flat without some good old TLC. A great way to do that is with using great products and getting a great cut! Here is a way for you to achieve this look for yourself and learn how to perserve your curls!

If you watch the video, you can see that he has a very flattering haircut for his face shape (there is a great shot at 2:45). It is longer and left slightly curly/wavy to give him a more youthful appearance, and the cut adds more roundness to the shape, evening out his more square face shape. Make sure you talk to your stylist about how you style your hair, since whether it is left curly or made straight or even if you style it both ways can influence the design of your haircut.

To style your hair, I would recommend using the Alterna Bamboo Anti-Frizz Shampoo and Conditioner. Once you’re out of the shower, dry your hair by lightly squeezing the hair, rather than roughly drying it. Doing that can help you preserve the shape of your natural curl which we can enhance and further perserve with wonderful products. I would recommend using a small amount of the Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider to prevent frizz and give it definition. Try to apply it on the hair, not through the curls (unless you want to break them up a bit). Then you can let it air dry as you go on with your day!

Here is a great Podcast from Kevin.Murphy showing you how to use Easy.Rider on Curly Hair:

Britney Spear’s New Single: Hold it Against Me.

Britney Spears is one of the pop idols that has managed to stay every present throughout the years. Since some of her first hits like “Oops I Did it Again” and “You Drive me Crazy” we have been moving to her lyrics and beats. This Tuesday comes the release of her newest single: “Hold it Against Me”

Britney has been a blond babe since the 90′s. Since her debut into the music industry, she was a blond. As time when on her hair became lighter and lighter. While earlier on, she was much more warm toned, now she is a very cool blonde. Her blond hair can be achieved through foiling different light, cool blonds, until all hair is colored (or in the case of the picture below, the new growth is broken up and softened.)

Britney+Spears+Circus+Promo

Her haircut has been a classic of long layers. She also has layers surrounding her face. Its a great look for sex appeal and versatility. Many of us remember when Britney shaved her head. This can be a great style for some women and very freeing. Take a great deal of precaution while considering it, though. It is a very drastic decision and really should only be done if you are completely certain that you want that look.

Britney these days is back to her long locks and creating music for our enjoy it. Check out the video at the bottom to listen to her new single.

Nicki Minaj’s “Pink Friday”

macminaj
The musical artist Nicki Minaj has bee gathering a lot of press lately. With her recent debut album release, “Pink Friday,” and M.A.C. releasing a Nicki Minaj inspired lipstick shade, Minaj is forging her way into the spotlight. Her new lipstick shade, a cotton candy pink will only be on sold November 26, December 3, December 10, and December 17. For more information on the Pink 4 Friday Lipstick, or to find a M.A.C. beauty counter near you, check out M.A.C. Cosmetics.

Minaj’s color changes often to many different colors. When thinking about dying your hair a more extreme color, sometimes it is a good idea to try out the hair color with a wig. Wigs are a great way to try out different colors before going to the salon.

Nicki_Minaj_Pink_Friday_cover edit
To take natural hair to Minaj’s pink you will need to lift it to a light blond. Preparing your hair for the lightening process is a great way to maintain the health of your hair. D’Arcy goes over some great ways to prepare yourself for lightening services in her blog post, Burlesque Goes Blonde. After the lightening service, then the hair can then be toned or dyed to the color you want whether it be blue, green, violet, or in Minaj’s case, pink.

To maintain your color, be sure to get a color safe shampoo. I recommend using Alterna Caviar Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner, remembering to only shampoo your hair once to at max twice a week to retain as much of your color as possible for as long as possible. The Caviar Moisture Shampoo will give your hair the moisture that it will need while minimizing fading.

If you’re interested in going pink, or any other color for that matter, come down to Emerson Salon and book a free consultation with one of our stylists!
