Crop it

In the last year, we have seen a huge resurgence in popularity of the “pixie” style hair cut. This style was originally made famous by the model Twiggy in the 1960′s but has now been revamped by starlets like Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan and Halle Berry.

Emma Watson

This is a haircut that can be achieved with mostly shears and is a great option for many age brackets for its practicality and simple style. Many face shapes (oval, square, heart and rectangle) can carry off this cut with ease and can accentuate femininity by bringing increased attention to the eyes and cheekbones. We recommend this style on straight to minimally curly hair that has fine to medium density.

Halle Berry

Recently, my client (Jen Taylor) requested to change her long inverted bob into a modified pixie with an extra long bang/front. She even brought pictures she discovered on the internet so that we could combine different elements into the design. Pictures can be so helpful when conducting a consultation for a new look. We suggest you research images for not only what you want but also do NOT want in order to aid your stylist in pinpointing your vision exactly.

Jen Taylor Before

I created the line of the perimeter around the nape, ears and temple and slowly perfected it through slow and precise blunt cutting. Then I slowly eliminated weight through layering around the back and sides and then blended the layers into the crown or top of the head. Jen originally wanted extra length around the nape area but once completed, Jen inspected the cut and decided it was too long. No problem! I slowly chiseled the nape shape shorter to customize the look without making it too masculine looking. Its always a good idea to leave a cut on the long side in order to have somewhere to go later. As we hairdressers say,” I can take it off but I can’t put it back on!”

Jen Taylor After Jen Taylor After

Jen’s haircut is great because she doesn’t have to wear product if she doesn’t want, but if she wants control or texture she can try using Night Rider by Kevin Murphy to funk it up! I loved doing this cut for her and felt so great to see her happy face when I was done. Thanks Jen!

From Witches to Pixies: Emma Watson’s New Style

On November 19th, Harry Potter:Deathly Hollows Part 1 was released, the second to last installment of the imaginative story of a young English boy who is swept up into the world of wizardry. Its hard to imagine that the books by J. K. Rowling have already been made into a full series of movies.

One of the Harry’s friends, Hermione, is played by the endearing Emma Watson who made her film debut in the series when she was 11. When we were first introduced to Emma, she had wavy/frizzy red brown hair and now she is all grown up! She not only acts but also models for the English based Burberry design house.

emma_watson

Recently, in an effort to create a fresh slate after the completion of the Harry Potter series, Emma cut off all of her hair into a very chic Mia Farrow-esque pixie cut. The finger length hair cut barely needs styling and is probably really liberating. We love it! Other stars who have cut off all their hair recently are: Halle Berry, Janet Jackson, and Carey Mulligan. A great product to use on this haircut is Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna. It contains super shiny silicones and conditioning vitamins alongside moisturizing caviar extract.

If you are willing to try a drastic change we recommend discussing the haircut in a consultation with your Emerson Salon stylist. Only they can aid to custom design a short haircut that is perfectly suited to your hair texture, styling commitment and lifestyle. Book online today!

Ask a Stylist-Growing Out Short Cuts

Kat asks:

“About a year ago, in what was either a moment of creative genius or temporary insanity, I took a pair of scissors to my long curly hair and lopped it all off (al la Jean Seberg). The result was remarkably successful, and I’ve been loving the look for a while, but I’m definitely ready to start growing my hair back out. This is easier said than done- I have thick, dark, curly hair that is generally at its best very long, or so short that the curl doesn’t exist. My childhood photos are full of painful, mushroom-shaped examples of what I’m afraid is in store for me now. Any tips on how to survive the era of ill-mannered grow-out hair before me?â€

Wow Kat, good for you!! Here’s what our stylists thought:

Lancer says:

“Congratulations on your DIY cut! I suggest making an appointment for a consultation so that your stylist can see your hair in person and determine what service you need for now. If it hasn’t been cut in a very long time, a deep conditioning treatment can do wonders in reviving your hair’s moisture balance as well as helping your grown out ends look better.

I have worked with many clients who are growing their hair out. Sometimes they need their layers reshaped so that the hair doesn’t stick out from the head in a triangular shape. Other times their hair just needs trimmed or texturized in the meantime.

Good luck with your decision and patience is key to growing out curly hair!”

Ellen says:

“Growing out your hair from such an extreme is hard for anyone, but to make matters worse you are dealing with thick curly hair! My suggestion would be to use Morrocon Oil Intense Curl Cream to hydrate and control the curl. To manage the ugly grow out process come in and get it routinely cut. Since you have thick hair it needs to be textured to lay better and to make your life easier while growing it out. Routine trimming will help it have a shape other then the dreaded mushroom top!”

Rusty says:

“I would consider your spontaneity to be a stroke of genius. Unfortunately, strokes of genius can have their setbacks. Growing your hair will be challenging. And yes, you’re going to have those stages where you’d rather pull it out than grow it out, but be very patient. This is an issue that time will definitely cure. You should see your favorite stylist or come into Emerson Salon, sit down with your stylist and have a serious conversation about what to expect so you can prepare yourself for the changes to come. Consultations are always complimentary!

Good luck with your hair. By the way, I bet the short hair was really cute and fun!”

Good luck Kat! Feel free to stop by and make an appointment for a consultation to see what the Emerson team can do for you. Stay tuned for more Ask A Stylist posts coming up!

Tegan And Sara Play Portland

539w

The identical twin Canadian rock star sisters known as Tegan and Sara have been a staple on many indie rocker’s playlists and now they are back with a new slate of killer songs in their sixth album, Sainthood. To help with promoting Sainthood, Tegan and Sara are coming to the Pacific Northwest and will be playing a show at the Keller Auditorium in Portland, OR on April 8, 2010.

In this picture, the sisters show off their new haircuts. Their former Joan Jett-esque fashion mullets are gone and have been replaced with two different looks. Tegan is rocking an edgy, asymmetrical mullet. Longer in the middle and through the back, down to one side, and cropped pretty short on the sides. To achieve this look, you will require a lot of texture, product and some flat ironing. I would probably choose to use Kevin Murphy’s Straight Defence and Alterna’s Styling Mud. For thicker hair, you can use a bit of Alterna’s Texturizing Glaze. Sarah’s new look is a bit more conservative, yet still stylish. Her look requires a strong side part, long sweeping fringe (bangs) and a slight a-line shape. I would also use Straight Defence and finish off the look with a flat iron and a bit of Texturizing Glaze.

Check out the trendy and talented twin’s new video for Hell, the lead single off of Sainthood!

Vidal Sassoon Classes

IMG_8208

Recently, three of our stylists attended the a cutting class held by the Vidal Sassoon Academy in Seattle’s downtown, part of our dedication to ongoing education and ensuring that we always are on top of the latest trends. Vidal Sassoon has long been considered the pinnacle of precision cutting so needless to say we were super excited to learn some new techniques.

Over the two full days of class we viewed demonstrations by Lisa (our great instructor) as well as getting hands on practice with real models. The pictures included here are of one of my (D’Arcy’s) models. After consulting with her, I determined that we would maintain her shorter haircut through layers, graduation and then line. This means that I first worked on layering, using vertical diagonal layers to diffuse the heaviness created by growth at her nape. I then over-directed her hair from behind the ears and crown back towards the weightline created at the back of the head shape. Next I used diagonal forward layering and sectioning on the sides to create softness. Then I used concave layering with vertical diagonal overdirection on top. Lastly, I carved with lines into the hair over and in front of the ears and on the bangs. A little texture was added to the top because of extra density and voila! A revitalized style cut!

Fall Hair Trends: Short Dark Cuts

Check out this amazing Fall cut that they featured on MopShots. We love it! What fall hair trends have you been seeing walking the streets of Capitol Hill?

MopShot says: “This haircut kills me; it’s so amazing. The key is that Kendall has such amazing hair to begin with–she really cannot go wrong. Her hair is super thick, which gives this cut a perfect base. The rusty red color is so spot on too. Kudos to colorist and stylist!”

Elle Magazine: A Short Hair Odyessey

A recent Elle Magazine piece featured the hair adventures of one reporter as she shed her long locks for a much shorter pixie-style haircut. While she claims that her snappy short cut cost her her boyfriend, she found the new short style to be highly admired by her women friends and even drawing a “Chic hair!” complement from one gay male acquaintance. In the author’s opinion, this perceived trade-off was more than worthwhile.

This kind of circumstantial evidence hardly proves the adage that men prefer women with long hair, but the saying has been long cited making us wonder if it is true? Of course, many celebrities, such as Rihanna above, sport a short pixie look to great acclaim. So, what do you think? Does going short for a woman come with romantic consequences? Or does this wives-tale belong on Snopes.com?
