Rocking New Reviews for D’Arcy

Meredith recently reviewed her visit with D’Arcy on Yelp:

“D’Arcy Harrison is the BEST stylist I’ve ever been to, and I’ve certainly done my homework. First of all, she sat down with me for about 15-20 minutes the first time I came in, just to get to know my personality and my preferences. No one has ever done that with me before, but it should be required when dealing with someone’s hair. During the entire appointment, she was pretty much educating me on all things hair…I learned a ton about the balayage process, as well as other tips on how to maintain a great cut and color.

I’ve been getting balayage for the past 2 years, but no one has paid as much attention to detail as D’Arcy does. The color turned out beautifully, and the cut (a short bob) was adorable, too! I’ve gotten numerous compliments on my hair in the past few months, even from really catty girls who don’t just hand out the ‘feed goods’!! I have another appointment with her tomorrow, and I can’t wait to see what king of magic she works on me this time!” (Read full review here)

Katherine, another client at Emerson Salon, has posted an update to her review. Here is the post about her first visit: “……I was fed up and wanted my RED. I looked around and found Emerson through a simple Google search of “Red hair Seattle”. I immediately came on to yelp and started to read reviews. I found Amanda S.’s review and decided right then I would go here and try D’Arcy.

BINGO! She red bleached my hair and put a semi permanent color on that really pops! Its exactly the color I showed her. I was nervous about semi permanent seeing I had DIY red hair in high school that was awful, but I’m writing this 3ish weeks later and my hair is still the same exact red as when I walked out their door! And double bonus, although I have dyed my pillow, every towel in the house and a couple of shirts, this stuff actually washes out of fabric, something manic panic in HS didn’t. Doesn’t wash out of my hair, washes out of my clothes, I’m in heaven.”

This happy “blood” redhead was told by D’Arcy to return in 3-5 weeks in order to retouch the grow-out of her dark brown hair. It is important that this color is maintained on a regular basis to make it look its best. This is also because application can become complicated if the new growth is more than an inch due to the fact that the chemicals behave differently with the warmth of the head. If there is more than the one inch of growth- bleach or color must be applied to the area beyond the 1″ prior to applying to the root. This can take additional time and can cost more money than a straightforward retouch.

Here is the follow up on Katherine’s return:

“I got my hair re-done about a week ago ….and GREAT customer service! I’m so glad I found this place! Did I mention that my hair looks just as perfect as it did the first time?” (full reviews here)

She heeded the advice of her stylist and was rewarded with consistent color! HINT: to keep a vibrant red shade at its optimum make sure to wash in lukewarm to cold water, shampoo less frequently (we recommend using FRESH.HAIR spray dry shampoo by Kevin Murphy), and shampoo with sulfate free shampoo. Sulfates are salts that fade color.

Thanks for the props Katherine! The red looks fabu on YOU!

Essy also just posted a new review with D’Arcy on 12/2: “I have never been loyal to any hair salon let alone a single person. To be honest I never had such a haircut that I loved so much that I sought out one specific person. But I have been going to D’Arcy now for several months and love her!

In these past months i’ve seen her i’ve gone through several different looks. She has given me awesome bangs (something I always wanted but never tried) and taught me how to train them. Cut off 13 inches to donate, and given me a very stylish bob (random people would compliment me on the street). And now is helping me grow out those bangs. –yes i cant seem to keep the same look for more than a week!

I sincerely recommend D’Arcy. Best of all she listens to what you want and then tells you what will look good. Afterall SHE is the professional!” (full review)

Jonathan’s Red Mohawk

Jonathan found our salon online and was visiting Seattle from Denver. He works as a vet tech and requested a red Mohawk. His hair had just gotten long enough to support a hawk, so I began with the cut and we consulted about what kind of red Jonathan wanted. I found that he wanted a more natural red color on his hawk, which complements his natural blond hair as well as his skin tone and eye
color.

Before JonathanAfter3

It constantly amazes me what a difference a total color change and
haircut can make on a person!

Thanks Jonathan, for visiting us while in Seattle!

“Sock it to Me” with the Hair from Sucker Punch

This past weekend the film Sucker Punch was released. Directed by 300′s Zack Snyder and starring Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Carla Gugino, Abbie Cornish, Vanessa Hudgens, Jon Hamm and Scott Glenn.

This much hyped about and star filled film is rich with great cinematography and visual effects work. The story surrounds Brownings’ “Baby doll” character who has been sent to the mental institution by her abusive father. She plunges herself into a fantasy world to cope. In this world, her (and the other girls) reside at the asylum and are forced into sexual work by the Orderly, Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac), and taught to dance by their therapist, Russian Dr. Vera Goski (Gugino). There, they are coached by a Wise Man on how to escape their horrible reality and slay their inner demons.

Gugino’s haircolor is a beautiful auburn shade that is a perfect balance between copper and a soft red. This can be achieved through an all over color service on naturally colored hair unless your hair is a dark brown or black shade. If you have previously colored or dark hair, a bleach lightener must be used before a second step of a permanent toner. If you have a lighter blond shade, a color correction may need to be performed to add the necessary red gold hue to transition the sensitive blond hair in order for it not to wash right away down the drain. If the hair is too light and too damaged it may not hold the color well if performed in one step.

Carla Gugino

We recommend a consultation prior to the coloring service in order to determine the correct method of applying the haircolor in addition to the necessary support products of shampoo and conditioner to maintain the fade prone red haircolor. We suggest using the Luminous Shine Bamboo line from Alterna as it will maximize reflection to the hair in addition to being paraben, sulfate, and sodium chloride free. Its even eco-certified!

Empower yourself like the women of Sucker Punch and fight fadeage with the correct color application and product sword!

Rocking some Red!

rihanna-on-cover-of-rolling-stone-and-vogue

A trend of late is sporting bright red in your hair. With Rihanna gracing the covers of both Vogue and Rolling Stone with her red hair, many have gone to add a bit of red to their own hair. Below are a few people on the hill who have a dash of red themselves: Alex Garcia, Edwin Ross, and myself, Franz Falkowski.

Alex Garcia
Alex Garcia

There are many different ways to achieve a true red. Some haircolor lines will have a bright red color which you can find in both permanent and deposit-only. Permanent hair color is something we all know very well, but deposit-only cannot bring hair lighter or remove existing color. Deposit-only will also last for only 4-8 weeks. It is a great choice for those who only want to add tone, or want something that won’t be fully permanent.

Another option is semi-permanent colors or “stains”. These colors will fade overtime if proper care is not taken, but they are a great choice for those who want a bright, noticeable color. These are great colors, but can be difficult to remove if you suddenly change your mind.

Franz Falkowski

After you’ve colored your hair. Be sure to grab a great color safe, salon quality shampoo. I recommend using the Alterna Caviar Moisture Shampoo & Conditioners. They will supply your hair with moisture and nourishment that it needs to stay healthy and hold color. I would also wash your hair with cooler water, your hair will hold the color longer.

Seeing Red with Emma Stone

One of Hollywood’s newest “it” actresses is the very beautiful and husky voiced Emma Stone whose resume includes House Bunny, Easy A, SuperBad and Zombieland. She started off doing sticoms including Malcom in the Middle and the Suite Life of Zack & Cody and she was even cast in the shortlived redo of the Partridge family.

Emma has donned many haircolors on her signature long layered locks and heavy bang. She has had dark chocolate brown, rich red and now blond . She changed her hue for her upcoming role as Gwen Stacy in the reboot of Spider Man. Transitioning red hair to blond can be tricky so here we have listed a few tips.

Book a consultation with an Emerson stylist to review exactly what is entailed in altering a vibrant red shade into a blond. It is not possible to put color on the red to make it blond as “tint does not lift tint.” This is the reason why it will be necessary to use bleach. If your hair is already damaged, your stylist may want to perform a test strand on your hair to see how it will behave once bleached. If the hair breaks when stretched following the strand test it might not be possible to lighten the hair without a conditioning treatment first. The Caviar Rejuvenation Treatment is a 3 step process that helps prepare your hair for bleaching if it is damaged. The treatment repairs and seals the cuticle of the hair. This is an in-salon treatment that is recommended to be performed at least 24 hours to a week in advance of bleaching.

Emma Stone

This bleach and tone service may not be complete after one session as bleaching out red can be a challenging process. Sometimes, the red, orange or yellow will not budge and the hair needs time to recuperate before achieving the desired result. At a certain point, hair won’t lighten any further without additional time and conditioning. A great at home deep conditioner is Born.Again Essential.Treatment by Kevin.Murphy which has tons of moisture and antioxidants. Throw it on your hair after you shampoo and towel dry and leave in for 20 minutes, then rinse. You can do this up to twice a week.

Once your hair is bleached out, your stylist can either tone your hair, or balayage in dimensional high and lowlights. Either way, this hair will need a high quality color shampoo like Caviar Moisture which is also paraben free, sulfate free and uses moisturizing seasilk. Continue using the Born.Again Essential.Treatment as your hair will be dying for the moisture. Another great product for anyone who sees a little breakage on bleached out hair is Rapid Repair by Alterna. It shines brilliantly and aids to mask any flyaways. Once you have invested in coloring your hair it is absolutely imperative that you use what is recommended to you otherwise the color could fade or the damage to your hair worsened. You look great, now maintain your great look with us!

Emma Stone’s Eye-Catching Hair in Easy A

-4

Easy A is a smart new romantic comedy that came out pulling in an impressive 7.8/10 on IMDB and 85% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. The story follows Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) as she sees how far a little white lie will go. Mirroring the classic tale of the Scarlett Letter, Olive’s lie quick spins out of control turning her life and the lives of everyone she knows upside down. This move is extremely well written and I highly recommend it if you are looking for some light-hearted laughs this weekend.

In the movie, Emma Stone’s hair is left long and falls below her shoulders with some layering that gives it a lot more movement. She is given some curl and a swooping bang. Its really a fantastic cut. All of this gives the whole cut a great deal of body and movement that catches the eye.

-3

Another thing catching people’s eye would be her great color. Her color is a nice orange red color that not only compliments her green eyes, but also gives her that Fiery sex appeal that only red can provide. Red can be tricky to pull off sometimes. You should take into account how light or dark you want to be, and whether you want to be a more warm red, or a cooler red. I like to take eye color into account when choosing the right red for someone.

As for styling, from where her fringe falls and above are left relatively, but not completely straight, by blow drying with a medium or large sized round brush. Everything else is curled by first spraying with a hairspray then with a large barreled curling iron taking medium sized sections and curling up and away from the face to give the hair more volume and body. Once curl and cooled, lightly brush the curls into the big wavy curls that she has, being sure not to fully brush out all of the curl.

Thinking about getting a hair style or color like Emma Stone in Easy A? Swing on by Emerson Salon and get a free consultation from one of our skilled stylists on how you can make this look yours.

The Secret of the American Teenager: They have great hair

I don’t watch a lot of TV but my guilty pleasure is The Secret Life of the American Teenager. There is something about this show that I can’t seem to get enough of!  Every time I watch it I wish I had the girls’ wardrobe and a hair team to make me look this great!  Three of the show’s characters have amazing hair color. Here are some great examples of blond, brown and red color done right.

Grace –Blond
I am tired of the over-processed, solid blond look. Here is a more flattering blond option.  Grace has a darker base of a level 6 (light brown) that gives the blond dimension. There are two different levels of blond in her hair, Level 11 (platinum blond) and a darker level 9 (yellow or honey blond).  The platinum is more prominent, to give hair that overall light blond feel and is broken up by a few light pieces of the darker honey blond.  Foiling with two different blonds and having a darker base makes for a perfect blond.

Amy – Light Brown
Amy is a great example of light brown in this picture.  It is a warm (red brown) level 6.  It is a simple all over color but, at a level 6, it shows a lot more of the red brown tone.  This color, with her skin tone and eye color is very striking and shows why not EVERY woman is a blond!

Madison-Red
Although she is a natural redhead, you too can have this amazing red even if you’re not!    She is considered a copper (red /blond) level 7.  There are many different types of red you can pick from. This one is so great on her because of her skin tone and blue eyes.  Red works really well with blue or green eyes and with a fair skin tone. Don’t rule out being a redhead, it is a great option for a lot of girls!

Tired of your basic over-processed blond or dull brown color? Maybe feeling like a dramatic change and want to go red? Take a cue from these beautiful stars, and make your appointment at Emerson today!

Raving for Red

Ah, red hair. Throughout history, it has been seen as a blessing and a curse. Due to the extreme rarity of the color, redheads have been thought of as witches, vampires, demons, you name it. They are often assumed to have a fiery temper and be quick to anger, as well as being sassy and mischievous. But there is also an awe associated with red hair. Venus in Botticelli’s famous painting is a redhead, as are many important figures in history and art (Queen Elizabeth anyone?).

The attraction and interest in red hair no doubt comes from its rarity: only 1 to 2% of the human population has natural red hair. Most of these, as you would probably guess, come from Western Europe, mostly Ireland and Scotland, but they are found all over the world, in places you wouldn’t expect (South America and Africa to name a couple. No, I’m serious!). The color comes from a mutation in a recessive gene, which explains its rarity. Yes, red hair is in fact a genetic mutation, but it’s a damn cute one if you ask me!

And having red hair affects your whole body and health. The gene that creates red hair also affects skin pigmentation, which is why most redheads have light skin and are prone to freckling. Light-skinned people have an increased sensitivity to UV rays, which make them susceptible to burns, sun damage, and skin cancer. Put on that sunscreen redheads! There have also been studies that show that redheads have different capacities for pain than most, and researchers have found that redheaded women need more anesthetic than men or women of any other hair color, although they’re not sure why this is. The makeup of the hair is different too- redheads have the least amount of hair on their heads than other colors, but their hair is generally very thick. Also, redheads don’t grey. As it ages, red hair turns sandy, and then white. But take heart redheads- you generally keep your color longer than people with other hair colors. So you can rock that red into middle age and beyond!

You want to make sure, as either a natural or a colored redhead, that you are taking special care of your hair to make sure it stays as vibrant as it can be. If you’re natural, make sure you shampoo and condition your hair with a lightweight moisturizing formula; since red hair tends to be thick and heavy, you want to make sure you’re not weighing it down. I love Kevin Murphy’s Angel Wash and Rise, or the Alterna Caviar Moisture line. Colored red hair takes a lot of care too. “You have to be aware that the red color has the biggest molecule, so it comes out of the hair fastest,” says our stylist Ellen. “If you’re going to red you have to make sure you’re using a color safe shampoo and also a sunscreen for your hair.”

Thinking about going red? Good for you! Red is a popular and daring look that more and more people are trying out.  Make sure you talk to your stylist about which shade will be right for your skin tone- reds are fabulous when done right, but can be tricky, especially when dying from a different color. You have to be aware of what the red formula will look like when mixed with the natural pigment of your hair.

A lot of it will have to do with your skin. People with light skin will want to stick with the more strawberry or terra cotta reds. You’ll want to stay away from darker reds, as they’re liable to wash out your skin coloring. Auburns are an excellent choice for those with medium skin tones, or if you want something with a little more punch, try a bright copper or an orange-red. Dark and olive skins are the hardest colorings to pull off red, but it can be done. Make sure you opt for a cooler red, like a burgundy or a violet-based red. You’ll definitely want to avoid strawberry blondes and other bright, lighter colors.

Thinking about taking the leap to red? Maybe you want to start out with a couple red highlights to punch up your natural color? Give us a call and make an appointment for a consultation- our stylists are always more than happy to sit down and discuss what’s going to look best for you. Stop by or call today!

Kate Nash’s Retro Auburn Hair

Kate-Nash-Do-Wah-Doo

Kate Nash’s second album “My Best Friend is You,” just released earlier this month with the single “Do Wah Do.” She is bringing her upbeat indie style with a more Supremes/Motown feel to Seattle this May 7th at Neumos.

Kate Nash is originally from the UK and produced her latest album with Duffy’s producer, Bernard Butler. She started out sharing her music online and spring boarded her popularity into a record contract with Fiction Records. Now she tours all over the world with her band!

In the “Do Wah Do,” video- the women don 1960′s style stewardess outfits and hair (With the pillbox hat to match!) Kate in particular has recently cut her long locks into a collarbone length bob style. We have been seeing this trend everywhere lately and its awesome to see how different women rock similar looks in their own unique way! Kate makes her version her own by adding a brave, bold, blunt bang sitting above the eyebrow line.

Kate has a truly signature haircolor. It is a beautiful auburn color that doesn’t come off too red or too brown. Our regional color educator, Daniel Keane (for our new color line Italy HairFashion) would call this a sexy “Irish Setter” auburn. Its a great color for anyone to try if they have pale or ivory skin as its warmth will not work against skin tone. Since this color is not too dark or too bright it can easily be achieved on medium brown virgin hair or highlighted/blond hair (this would be an all over color service.) If working from a dark brown or black hair- the hair will need to be bleached or purified in some way for the tone to show up and look consistent (this is color correction or bleach and tone services.)

When styling your hair like Kate’s:

  • Towel dry after shampooing.
  • Apply Motion Lotion Curl Enhancer by Kevin Murphy to straight hair in order to hold the bevel to the perimeter. Or apply Moroccan Oil Styling Oil to wavy/curly hair to achieve a soft, straight texture.
  • Using a denman brush, flat wrap the hair around the head shape to create a straight texture that isn’t to full. It will also help curve the perimeter and bang area under like Kate’s.
  • Add Kevin Murphy’s Easy Rider to the bang area and flat iron the full bang by scooping in an outward convex motion. Find any fly-aways and flat iron those as well.
  • To finish: Spray with Working Spray by Alterna for flexible hold.

We’re confident Kate will give us a great show and we look forward to seeing what fashion and hairstyle she dons for her concert!

Christina Hendricks – Style Icon

christinahendricks1

It is no surprise to me that “Mad Men” star Christina Hendricks (who plays Joan Holloway on the show) has taken the fashion world by storm. Her vintage style is sleek, chic and unique. She knows how to dress to suit her rocking curves. Her fiery red locks always seem to be the perfect compliment to any of her ensembles. When asked about who her style icons are, Christina has named Marilyn Monroe, Faye Dunaway and Janis Joplin. A very eclectic selection and it shows.

To achieve her look, apply a mousse (I like Alterna’s Non-Aerosol Mousse) to wet hair blow dry and curl with a big barrel curling iron. I particularly like to pin each curl as I go, spray and let set until I have finished the entire head. This will help prolong the body and shape. I then take down the curls and shake them out loosely, pinning and securing them with bobby pins. Here, Christina has added an adorable vintage hat, placed perfectly over her part, to compliment her style.

57671333

Christina’s look can be affordable and easy to duplicate. A little black dress can be found at any budget and a little patience at a few vintage stores will find you the great accessories to change your look from ordinary to sleek, chic and unique!
