Stars Triumphant Return with Five Ghosts

stars452_

A band like Stars from Montreal give indie pop a good name with its songs instrumentalized into thoughtful rock pieces with an inner emotional arc. They are upbeat yet lyrical simultaneously. Stars’ newest studio album, Five Ghosts, is a tour de force with its lead single, Fixed. Singer-guitarist Amy Millan rocks as the band’s front woman and holds her own in the mostly male band.

Amy’s hair color is soft and feminine even though it is on the darker side of brunette. She probably received an all over balayage service. If you are looking for similar color to Amy’s, ask your stylist to give you a rich, neutral brown base color with painted in highlights that are toned to a medium blond. This will create a fuller look to the hair in addition to softening the dark hue. This technique can go longer between services as its subtle application diminishes the effect of the inevitable “grow out” line. Amy’s haircut is a shoulder length, layered haircut with texture. This means that in addition to the basic shape shorter pieces are added to the layers to create movement. This can be done with the shears alone or a razor if your hair is not prone to frizz. Try styling this do with Motion Lotion by Kevin Murphy before blow drying with a boar bristle brush. It aids in enhancing and holding the bend created by the brush and extends the life of the style.

Drummer Pat McGee has become adventurous with his locks. He decided to buzz his hair into a boxy looking short mohawk and added pink and white blond hues to it. This can be achieved by bleaching the hair out completely and then a vivid semi-permanent toner is applied on top. These shades fade quickly so make sure if you receive this service that you go home with a color safe shampoo and conditioner like Caviar Moisture as the hair will be damaged. A great product to style this with is Hair Shaper by Fudge. It has firm hold and is pliable for creating height.

All we know is we are trans-’fixed’ on the success and style of this band and cross our fingers that they will tour Seattle someday!

Robyn: Dancing On Her Own With Great Hair

Robyn

Robyn might seem new to some but she has been producing work since she was discovered by Meja at age 16. Originally from Sweden, Robyn recently debuted her new electro pop single,”Dancing on My Own,” in the US to promote her tour. She has placed in the Billboard Hot 100, received a Grammy Nomination and even provided back up vocal for Britney Spears’ Piece of Me track.

Robyn’s style is current and modern yet fun and girly. Her ultra blond platinum hair is most likely an all over bleach and tone service. What this means is the hair (whether natural or colored) is lightened with bleach to the lightest color possible and then permanently colored with a shade that eliminates yellow or warmth. This service can be time consuming and a consultation is necessary to review the effects of bleaching to the hair and scalp in addition to reviewing the necessary color maintenance products. The hair becomes dry and brittle and must be “babied” with the correct shampoos and conditioners for your hair type to guarantee the life of the color. Angel Wash and Rinse by Kevin Murphy are excellent because they are specifically designed for fine, color treated hair (and it smells like creamsicle!)

It is important for anyone looking to receive this service to understand that if your hair is a dark brown or black shade that this process most likely will not work on your hair in one session. Sometimes one session can only go so far and must be tried again after 1-2 weeks of deep conditioning. During this time, one must live with an “in between” shade of coppery or honey blond in order to avoid unnecessary breakage and over irritation to the scalp. Hair coloring is a science but everyone’s hair behaves somewhat differently based on its history, density, texture, and condition.

Robyn’s haircut is much longer on top in contrast to being shorter at the neck and around the ears. Robyn has fine, straight hair and when discussing this haircut with your stylist make sure you review whether this style fits in with your styling routine and lifestyle. For example, if you have thick, coarse and curly hair this haircut would need lots of blow drying and flat ironing. If you are a “wash and go” person, this haircut might not be for you unless you intend to wear it natural.

If you have straight hair, try styling this cut with Morroccan Oil Glimmer Shine while blow drying with a paddle brush. It gives great shine and does not weigh the hair down. If you want the style to be swept back like in the video: try using Extreme Wax by Alterna. It gives control and height and aids in piecing out texture around the sides and neck. To finish, spray with Session Spray by Kevin Murphy for super hold.

Are you “dancing on your own” like Robyn? Don’t! Come dance with us here at Emerson Salon when you arrive for your appointment! Book online today!

Tegan And Sara Play Portland

539w

The identical twin Canadian rock star sisters known as Tegan and Sara have been a staple on many indie rocker’s playlists and now they are back with a new slate of killer songs in their sixth album, Sainthood. To help with promoting Sainthood, Tegan and Sara are coming to the Pacific Northwest and will be playing a show at the Keller Auditorium in Portland, OR on April 8, 2010.

In this picture, the sisters show off their new haircuts. Their former Joan Jett-esque fashion mullets are gone and have been replaced with two different looks. Tegan is rocking an edgy, asymmetrical mullet. Longer in the middle and through the back, down to one side, and cropped pretty short on the sides. To achieve this look, you will require a lot of texture, product and some flat ironing. I would probably choose to use Kevin Murphy’s Straight Defence and Alterna’s Styling Mud. For thicker hair, you can use a bit of Alterna’s Texturizing Glaze. Sarah’s new look is a bit more conservative, yet still stylish. Her look requires a strong side part, long sweeping fringe (bangs) and a slight a-line shape. I would also use Straight Defence and finish off the look with a flat iron and a bit of Texturizing Glaze.

Check out the trendy and talented twin’s new video for Hell, the lead single off of Sainthood!

Concert Update – Freelance Whales at the Crocodile, 11/17

We love this little indie rock band from New York that is making big waves with their electronic infused pop rock “amalgam” as they describe themselves on their myspace page. Everything about this band makes it appealing, the banjo riffs, the sticky melodies, the post-shoegaze metasounds. Now if that doesn’t get you excited, check out one of their songs here:

The show is at the Crocodile Cafe on 11/17 with Fanfairlo. Tickets and more information here.

Concert Update – The Sounds at Showbox on 10/27

Sweeden’s indie pop-rock band, The Sounds, are returning to Seattle for another potentially epic show at the Showbox next week on Tuesday the 27th. There latest album, Crossing the Rubicon, has a number of great songs on it including 4 Songs and a Fight and Dorchester Hotel that are up beat and lots of fun. Front-woman Maja Ivarsson has an undeniable charisma that makes any show she puts on entirely enjoyable. We can’t wait to see this band in such a small venue like the Showbox (tickets here).
