Not many men these days have parts in their hair. Its a trend that is definitely finding its way back in men’s hair fashion but few can pull it off like Alexander SkarsgĂĄrd, from True Blood.
The trend of parting the hair is making its way back slowly but surely. SkarsgĂĄrd usually parts his hair on the left. Finding where to part your hair is a combination of observing where your hair naturally wants to part, and fighting against or working with any strong growth patterns in the front hairline. If you have strong cowlicks that prevent you from styling your hair like you would want to, try using a blow dryer to dry the hair where you want it to go.
SkarsgĂĄrd has his hair relatively short, yet long enough to give it style. To achieve this look, you’ll need a finishing product that is going to give you hold without the ‘crunch.’ That’s why I recommend using Kevin.Murphy Night.Rider for this style. Use a small amount and add more as needed to give the style hold and some of that clean cut, bad boy charm. It is a product that ‘sets’ which means that you have about 60 seconds to manipulate it to your liking and have it hold that style. This is great for taming down unruly or poofy sides.
Think this is a good look for you? Come on in and schedule an appointment with me, today!
It seems now is the time to change hair looks- from Hollywood, to New York, from music to film, and from celebrity to everyday jane!
Here we look at a fun, outside the box change with Lauren Conrad’s new blue and purple hair tips. This is an easy way to transform blond hair into a more vivacious and bold, new look! We love this spunky new addition that transforms her from her usual put together look into a more effervescent beauty!
To style: Rough blowdry with Anti.Gravity by Kevin.Murphy. Spray in Hair Resort Spray By KM and curl with a large barrel curling iron. Finish with Rapid Repair Spray for shine by Alterna.
For a few days, people thought Vanessa Hudgens was sporting a short wig for a film but alas! it was actually a drastically shorter do! Vanessa has naturally wavy hair that is very thick and dense and has been long ever since she debuted in High School Musical. This cut is great as it still softens her and actually aids in making her look taller as the petite Vanessa was visually almost overpowered by her hair length. The perimeter hits past the ears and leaves a rounded nape in addition to long layers that are pulled back away from the face.
To style: Apply MoroccanOil Glimmer Shine to towel dried hair and dry with a medium sized, round bristle brush away from the face. To finish, lightly spray Texture Master by Kevin.Murpy for movement, height and hold.
Lastly, we came to know Evan Rachel Wood’s True Blood character Queen Sophie-Anne LeClerq as a feisty, redheaded lesbian vampire. Recently, though, Evan opted to completely alter her look into a shorter do with cropped sides and a longer, textured top. She also toned down the red by “browning out” the sides and nape in addition to bleach and toning the top into a beige blond with a balayage technique.
To style: On dry hair apply Night.Rider by Kevin.Murphy to the top lengths for texture and height. Then spray with Session.Spray by Kevin.Murphy for height and hold. Tip: Using your fingers and a medium heat blow dryer will help set the hair spray when creating height.
Looking to shift your style, too? Subtle or Dramatic we are here to serve at Emerson and we give you,

Spring is the time for transitions: changes in weather, flowers and foliage and of course, hair! This is the time of year when many clients come into the salon requesting transformations. They are “over” their winter style and are willing to shake it up with a new haircolor or new haircut. Even if you are only minimally adjusting your look for the new season it can make you feel revitalized and adds a little bounce to your step knowing you have a fresh, crisp style.
A perfect example of someone slightly altering their look is the TV and film star, Katherine Heigl. Recently, the actress debuted a new style that is shorter than her usual long bob but longer than a pixie cut. We have seen Katherine in many lengths and haircolors but we love the modern edge that this new do gives her. The ultra light buttery blond really pops in the sun and her hairstyle is soft, accessible and able to achieve anything according to mood. The misconception is that there isn’t much versatility to a shorter style such as this but there are many options you can try with this haircut:
Curl it for a younger, saucier look. Its a nice brunch or coffee date do! Try using MoroccanOil Glimmer Shine Spray for shine and moisture before curling then finish by fingering through the curl and spraying with Alterna Caviar Working Spray,
Straighten it with volume at the crown for conservative elegance for a business meeting or networking event. Start with round brushing with Anti.Gravity by Kevin.Murphy then add a couple shakes of the Powder.Puff by Kevin.Murphy into the crown. Finish with Working Spray.
Funk it up with a fibrous product. Blowdry roughly with Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna for shine then add Styling Putty by Alterna for texture and “piece-y”ness. Finish with Extra Hold Spray by Alterna for lasting hold to your do.
We can’t wait for warmer weather and are standing at the wait at Emerson Salon for when you are ready to transform your everyday Spring accessory….your hair!
Elly Jackson has amazing style, presence, and personally, I enjoy her music. She has a cutting edge hair design that is stylistically versatile. The Haircut is achieved with a combination of cutting and texturizing techniques. Deeper texture is cut into the top of her hair to give volume and support to her changing hair styles.
Her style can be achieved by prepping your hair with Kevin Murphy Angel Wash and Angel Rinse; both designed for fine, color-treated hair. After your hair is prepped, spray Kevin Murphy Body Builder Mousse into your hand; emulsify and apply with your fingers throughout the hair, starting on the sides and blow dry the sides into place. Set the sides with Kevin Murphy Session Spray. For the top of the hair, blow dry into position using a wide-toothed comb, your hands, or a brush, until the hair is completely dry. Once dry and cooled, shake some Kevin Murphy Powder Puff powder into the hair on top and rub it into the hair for extra support and maximum volume. Finish the style with Fudge Membrane Gas or more of the Kevin Murphy Session Spray.
One of my favorite things to do is play with bright colors. There are many different combinations and customized colors you can create that there is always a color for you. I use a technique called color melting. Color melting involves taking two or more colors and applying them in such a way that the colors gradually change from one to the other or “melt” into each other.
We started with our previous cut and color, shown below. This was left long throughout and and textured. His streak we have bleached out and then applied the three colors: violet, blue, and green. As it grew out, we decided to take it much shorter. Since Edwin really wanted more texture, we decided to use a razor to cut his hair. As for the color, we wanted to integrate red into his color, so we bleached his roots and melted the red into the existing violet. We also created a shorter, smaller streak on his right side, that we bleached, then melted red into violet.

Since we started with such dark hair, and we needed to get him to such a light color before we applied the color, you would want to invest in some quality products. First I recommend using Alterna Caviar Moisture Shampoo and its corresponding conditioner. The hair that has been colored will be needing moisture that these products can provide. For styling, we used a texturizing product and a wax for slightly more definition. Starting with slightly damp hair, put in a small amount of Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider and work through the hair and then blow dry. When it is completely dry, you can flat iron the mid-lengths and ends of the longer pieces. with the pieces on top, flat iron the strands while rotating the iron so they slightly want to curl up. When ironing the bangs, rotate the iron slightly down while moving down the strand. After flat ironing the hair use a wax or pomade like Alterna Hemp Sheer Pomade to define the ends. Finish with a hard hold hairspray like Alterna Hemp Volume Lock Hairspray and you are good to go!

Black Swan is the much hyped about new movie that is wowing viewers with with creepy new plot. Personally, psychological thrillers are some of my favorite movies and given the movie industry’s move towards more commercial fare I haven’t found many movies to catch me, but Black Swan was a pleasant surprise. While Black Swan is an exceptionally well crafted film, Natalie Portman’s compelling performance is what really takes it to the next level.
Over the years, the always beautiful and captivating Ms. Portman, has taken numerous hair styles, from shaved bald to classic medium, sexy waves. Yet, no matter what, she always has looked fabulous and healthy. That is until she starved herself for her role in this movie.
To better fit with her role as Nina, Natalie Portman’s long hair is portrayed as lifeless, dull, and thinning. Many people lack proper nutrition and yes, this not only shows up all over our bodies, but also atop our heads. While a level of dulling of your hair’s luster and thickness comes from aging or environmental factors, many people don’t realize the impact of proper nutrition on their hair. The right food is essential for your hair’s health! For a more indepth look at the right kind of nutrition of beautiful hair, check out these blog posts we have done previously on the subject here: hair and nutrition.
If your hair has been losing some of its luster another important step is to confer with your stylist. Be sure to tell them about your what you have been noticing with your hair, as well as any factors that may be relevant. Some possibilities on what may be affecting your hair’s health include what products you are using at home for your hair care, any health concerns such as medications regularly taken, recent illnesses, or recent surgeries. Once you and your stylist zero in on a possible cause, we can help you identify steps to help you achieve the healthiest hair possible.
In this photo, Natalie’s hair is again vibrant, shiny, and her color has depth. Here she sports a bob that has chunky, textured layers. This style can be achieved by blow drying the hair with Kevin Murphy’s Anti Gravity first, to give it hold and structure. The top of her hair is dried smoothly, following her part and head shape. The mid-lengths and ends of her hair are tousled/scrunched as it is dried. Once the hair is completely dry, a flat iron can create the angled bend on the ends of the hair. For extra oomph, you can back-brush the mid-lengths a bit to break up/ruffle the texture for this very modern style.
Check out the trailer for this great movie, I highly recommend it!
RED is a movie that follow Frank Moses (played by Bruce Willis), retired CIA operative who is the new target of the CIA’s assassination plots. He and his fellow retirees team up to uncover the truth and save their lives. This action/comedy is something I highly recommend seeing. It opened on October 15th and has a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 170 reviews with an average rating of 6.3/10. Go see it before it leaves theaters!
One of the retirees is Victoria, retired MI6 assassin, played by the wonderful Academy Award winner Helen Mirren. She has he hair cut to fall just at her jaw, making this much more of a low maintenance haircut. She was further given layers to reduce bulk and weight while giving a bit more shape to her curls and wave. Her bangs are cut to fall at her brow and slope to connect with the upper layers of the main body.
For her color, they used two different levels of blond to give her a very soft depth to her color. The lighter blond is placed in such a way that it makes if that more defining of the curl. Also with this light blond color, her eyes are made to seem just that more blue. Blond hair and blue eyes is a classic combination, though whenever going blond, you should consult with your stylist to make sure that it will work for your skin tone.
To achieve the style that Mirren’s hair was given, one could start by using Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity then finger drying the hair. The hair would then be curled with a large barreled curling iron and then set to cool with large velcro-rollers. Once it has all cooled you can remove the rollers and brush out with a boar-bristle brush and finish it off with a spray of Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray.
Interested in making this look yours? Come into Emerson today and have a consultation with one of our stylist!
Warning! Though this trailer does show many more shots of Mirren’s hair, it also contains some violent behavior.
“About a year ago, in what was either a moment of creative genius or temporary insanity, I took a pair of scissors to my long curly hair and lopped it all off (al la Jean Seberg). The result was remarkably successful, and I’ve been loving the look for a while, but I’m definitely ready to start growing my hair back out. This is easier said than done- I have thick, dark, curly hair that is generally at its best very long, or so short that the curl doesn’t exist. My childhood photos are full of painful, mushroom-shaped examples of what I’m afraid is in store for me now. Any tips on how to survive the era of ill-mannered grow-out hair before me?”
Wow Kat, good for you!! Here’s what our stylists thought:
Lancer says:
“Congratulations on your DIY cut! I suggest making an appointment for a consultation so that your stylist can see your hair in person and determine what service you need for now. If it hasn’t been cut in a very long time, a deep conditioning treatment can do wonders in reviving your hair’s moisture balance as well as helping your grown out ends look better.
I have worked with many clients who are growing their hair out. Sometimes they need their layers reshaped so that the hair doesn’t stick out from the head in a triangular shape. Other times their hair just needs trimmed or texturized in the meantime.
Good luck with your decision and patience is key to growing out curly hair!”
Ellen says:
“Growing out your hair from such an extreme is hard for anyone, but to make matters worse you are dealing with thick curly hair! My suggestion would be to use Morrocon Oil Intense Curl Cream to hydrate and control the curl. To manage the ugly grow out process come in and get it routinely cut. Since you have thick hair it needs to be textured to lay better and to make your life easier while growing it out. Routine trimming will help it have a shape other then the dreaded mushroom top!”
Rusty says:
“I would consider your spontaneity to be a stroke of genius. Unfortunately, strokes of genius can have their setbacks. Growing your hair will be challenging. And yes, you’re going to have those stages where you’d rather pull it out than grow it out, but be very patient. This is an issue that time will definitely cure. You should see your favorite stylist or come into Emerson Salon, sit down with your stylist and have a serious conversation about what to expect so you can prepare yourself for the changes to come. Consultations are always complimentary!
Good luck with your hair. By the way, I bet the short hair was really cute and fun!”
Good luck Kat! Feel free to stop by and make an appointment for a consultation to see what the Emerson team can do for you. Stay tuned for more Ask A Stylist posts coming up!
After multiple requests and lots of waiting, we finally have Kevin Murphy’s highly anticipated product, Night Rider!
This matte paste is similar to Aveda’s Control Paste, and has a whipped, waxy texture that molds easily and sets hard and dry to add texture to short or choppy looks. “Night Rider is great for guys with really thick hair who want texture and hold,” says D’Arcy, one of our stylists who has used the product on her clients. Apply to dry or damp hair, and it will set in about 60-90 seconds, giving you time to mold your style. You’ll have a firm, matte hold that will keep you rocking your look throughout the day!
Come by Emerson Salon to pick up your Night Rider today!
We are overjoyed that warm weather and sunshine has finally hit Seattle! Now that we are heading into warmer temperatures, some female clients might opt for a shorter, more practical hairstyle in order to beat the heat. Shorter hair on women can definitely look feminine but also quite flattering. We recommend shorter styles for women who have oval, round or square face shapes. These face shapes do not require longer lengths to balance out the features.
Here, Agyness Deyn is extremely brave with the shortest haircut shown here. This is most likely a simple buzz cut that utilizes one clipper attachment to create the same length of hair all over the head. Many women who have gone this short have reported that it is liberating to lop off all of their hair. No styling needed as you roll out of bed looking the same as you did the night before! This haircut needs to be maintained once a month and if you have this haircut, but want a little oomph to it we recommend spraying Glimmer Shine by Moroccan Oil for luminosity and shine.
Pink has become well known for her version of a short haircut she has been sporting for awhile now. Her haircut is completed with shears only and is softly layered and textured into the length on top. Its important to leave enough length around the face and sides in order to create the “piecy” look you see in the picture. A great product to use while styling this haircut is Sticky Business by Kevin Murphy. It has good hold, is extremely pliable and stays workable in your hair throughout the day. Put a nickel size amount in your hand and rub your hands together before putting it in your hair. The warmth aids in distributing the product in addition to making it easier to absorb into the hair.
Last but not least is Rihanna! Rihanna has been playing with different ways to wear her shorter hair in the last 2 years. Here, she has the sides and back completely clippered down to the skin. The top is longer and softly layered with a new hue of cherry red. This was most likely done through a bleach and tone service where the hair is lightened to a pale orange and then a vivid semi permanent shade of red is applied. The only down side to using such a bright color is it tends to fade quickly so make sure to use a color safe shampoo like Caviar Moisture by Alterna to extend the life of the color. A great product for styling this do would be Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy. It has light hold and gives control to frizz and fly-aways that might occur after an extensive color service.
Will you be brave enough to go short this summer? If you are, call Emerson! We will help you determine the best length to receive through a thorough consultation.
