Color Bug

Kevin Murphy has done it again by creating an awesome new creative hair product!!! This time he was inspired by powdered wigs of long ago and created colored shadows that act as a temporary pop of color that can wash out with shampoo.

Watch this video on how Kevin uses the Color Bugs and how to best apply on different hair color types with different product combinations. I especially love the purple on the dark hair color. I might try it myself!

For more information on the Kevin Murphy line, its ingredients and press go to Kevin Murphy’s website here or keep following our blog to learn more!

3 Ways to Add Volume to Your Hair

Volume can be a hard thing to achieve for those who don’t come by it naturally. I love volume and here are a few tips to getting some extra “oomph” in your do.

The first step to volume can be as simple as the products you are using. Products are some of your best friends! Using Kevin.Murphy Anit.Gravity, an oil-free volumizing agent is a great first step! You can also combine it with other products like Alterna Caviar Volume Shampoo and Conditioner to get more body. The Kevin.Murphy Powder puff is also great to use as a finishing product and to add definition to the texture of the hair.

Blowdrying can help you as well. Volume is mostly created at the root of the strand. When you blowdry your hair, dry it the opposite way you want it to fall. For instance, when you want more volume and you pull your hair back normally, blowdry it forward. the resistance you create will create volume when you pull it back for styling.

Another great way to add extra volume is called back brushing (also known as back combing). This technique requires you to take a comb or brush to a section of hair and comb/brush the hair from ends to scalp. You can then lightly brush over the sections to smooth out the top layer and hide the back combing.

Use these tips and tricks to never leave the house with flat hair again!

Franz’s New Haircut!

newhaircut
I just got my hair cut with Lancer! It was not a huge change, but big enough to make a difference. I love to style my hair with it up in the back, blended on the sides, and keeping all the length that I’ve worked so hard to grow long. So we cut about an inch off of the crown area cut back the back of my mohawk to be smaller and blended it, and blended the new length on the top to the clippered sides.

To style this we cocktailed a Kevin.Murphy Body.Guard and Hair.Resort in my hair to blow it dry. The Body.Guard helps to moisturize my chemically processed and already naturally dry hair. The Hair.Resort helps provide the hair with beach texture, and goodness knows I love texture in my hair. then we flat iron my hair using Damage.Manager to protect myself from excess heat damage and Night.Rider paste to create a hard hold with texture. Viola! My new look is completed! Thanks Lancer!

Blond Bombshell: Emily Browning’s Hair from Sucker Punch

A new movie that is taking the world by storm is Sucker Punch. It is a beautiful flurry of punches and kicks. It follows Babydoll (Browning) as she attempts to escape an asylum with her inmate friends before she is sent to be lobotomized. From the shock of her situation, Babydoll plunges herself into her own fantasy world where nothing can stop her.

Babydoll

Browning hair is taken to a very light blonde for the movie. Doing so can create a beautiful look, but it should be done with caution so as to avoid damage. Lightening hair that has already been damaged can just perpetuate the damage. The best solution is to prepare your hair with conditioning treatments a week to two weeks prior to when you plan to lighten your hair. You can receive those at Emerson, and even grab some wonderful products for use at home. One of those products is the Alterna Caviar Over Night Hair Repair. It is a leave on treatment that you use when you go to bed and wash out in the morning.

This may also take two processes, since after your hair is lifted it may not be the correct tone (too yellow or brassy). Browning’s hair in the movie is a very cool blonde, which many times can only be achieved with an additional application of tone after lightening.

Babydoll

As for styling and the cut, her hair is kept long and straight at the top, and textured with layered on the ends. the ends have a slight curl that can be duplicated by applying Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion to damp hair and round brushing. Browning’s hair is then parted slightly to the right, coming to a center parting going down the back. The hair is then pulled into two pigtails held in place with clear bands. I recommend using a comb to ensure even tension when gathering the hair, and then using the Kevin Murphy Session Spray to hold down any fly-aways.

It is always a good idea to have a consultation with your stylist to assess the condition of the hair andcreate a battle plan. Come in to Emerson Salon today to get your new blonde locks!

Kevin.Murphy’s Top Ten Tips for Styling

Kevin.Murphy is a great product line. Sulfate and paraben free, it is based off of the idea that you shouldn’t have to work hard to have great hair. I recently discovered this list of their top ten recommended techniques for great hair using their products from their website.

kevin_murphy_fashionlabelPhoto

    • If you have fine curly hair and want to enhance the curl without losing bounce. Use MOTION.LOTION and a dab of ANGEL.RINSE on the ends.
    • Want the curl to relax? Mix MOTION.LOTION with LEAVE-IN.LUXURY for the Rapunzel/mermaid look.
    • Add a drop of MOTION.LOTION to your ANTI.GRAVITY for volume, lift and soft definition.
    • Hair curly and a bit dry? Mix MOTION.LOTION and BORN.AGAIN for the ultimate leave in treatment with a silky feel.
    • If your curl is looking a bit yesterday, spritz with STAYING.ALIVE, leave for a second and give your hair a toss. Now you are today.
    • Banish the frizz on curls and relax the look with MOTION.LOTION in hand put up into a ponytail and wipe on MOTION.LOTION and go!
    • Afro to slickback, mix ROUGH.RIDER and STICKY.BUSINESS for flat, shiny hair
    • After blow drying with ANTI.GRAVITY, wipe on MOTION.LOTION to dirty up the do and give you a model look.
    • Fast hair, blast in ANTI.GRAVITY until the hair is dry and still slightly hot. Wipe in some HAIR.SCREEN, twist it up, untwist, shake and you have the instant glam do.
    • Dry in LEAVE-IN.LUXURY, rinse and forget the straightening irons. It will stay straight and will even keep away the humidity frizz.

I hope these tips from Kevin.Murphy will help you create that look that you’ve been trying to create. If you have any other questions about Kevin.Murphy products or how to use them, come in and have a chat with one of our skilled stylists.

      Mirren Goes “RED”

RED is a movie that follow Frank Moses (played by Bruce Willis), retired CIA operative who is the new target of the CIA’s assassination plots. He and his fellow retirees team up to uncover the truth and save their lives. This action/comedy is something I highly recommend seeing. It opened on October 15th and has a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 170 reviews with an average rating of 6.3/10. Go see it before it leaves theaters!

      10012010_HelenMirrenRed
One of the retirees is Victoria, retired MI6 assassin, played by the wonderful Academy Award winner Helen Mirren. She has he hair cut to fall just at her jaw, making this much more of a low maintenance haircut. She was further given layers to reduce bulk and weight while giving a bit more shape to her curls and wave. Her bangs are cut to fall at her brow and slope to connect with the upper layers of the main body.

For her color, they used two different levels of blond to give her a very soft depth to her color. The lighter blond is placed in such a way that it makes if that more defining of the curl. Also with this light blond color, her eyes are made to seem just that more blue. Blond hair and blue eyes is a classic combination, though whenever going blond, you should consult with your stylist to make sure that it will work for your skin tone.

      mirrenred
To achieve the style that Mirren’s hair was given, one could start by using Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity then finger drying the hair. The hair would then be curled with a large barreled curling iron and then set to cool with large velcro-rollers. Once it has all cooled you can remove the rollers and brush out with a boar-bristle brush and finish it off with a spray of Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray.

Interested in making this look yours? Come into Emerson today and have a consultation with one of our stylist!

Warning! Though this trailer does show many more shots of Mirren’s hair, it also contains some violent behavior.

      Ask A Stylist-Removing Product

      Tim asks:

“My hair is chemically colored black, so in order to give it a natural looking shine I use olive oil based products – which works great. The problem is getting them out at the end of the day. What’s best for removing oil based products?”

Thanks Tim! Great question. Here’s what our stylists have to say:

      John says:

“Kevin Murphy-Maxi Wash works great to exfoliate the hair and scalp without stripping the color.”

      Emily says:

“Agreed. Maxi Wash is a great exfoliant and will release the oils without drying the hair.”

      Night Rider is here!

      night rider

After multiple requests and lots of waiting, we finally have Kevin Murphy’s highly anticipated product, Night Rider!

This matte paste is similar to Aveda’s Control Paste, and has a whipped, waxy texture that molds easily and sets hard and dry to add texture to short or choppy looks. “Night Rider is great for guys with really thick hair who want texture and hold,” says D’Arcy, one of our stylists who has used the product on her clients. Apply to dry or damp hair, and it will set in about 60-90 seconds, giving you time to mold your style. You’ll have a firm, matte hold that will keep you rocking your look throughout the day!

Moroccan Oil, Lady Gaga, and Vogue Magazine

      Image1

Moroccan Oil is one of our favorite hair product lines here at Emerson Salon! We love it and so do our customers, we can barely keep it on the shelves!!

Vogue magazine recently featured an article about Moroccan Oil on its website and highlighted its ability to refresh and revitalize your hair. They shared with us that on Oscar night many celebrity hairstyles incorporated this styling line including Maggie Gyllenhaal, Charlize Theron and Anna Kendrick. This luxurious product is very popular right now with celebrity stylists with Orlando Pita, Rachel Zoe, Enzo Angileri and for goodness sakes Lady Gaga uses it. What’s good for Lady Gaga is good with us! Read the whole article here.

      moroccanoil-treatment-100ml_sized

Moroccan Oil has many beneficial properties to its products but also uses many socially conscious and free trade programs in its operations. This line is not tested on animals and also does not contain any animal based ingredients. We also recently learned that a % of profits go to a Moroccan women co-op so we know that these products help sustain the communities it receives its high quality ingredients from. “Revenue from this project provides income to families and helps improve the working conditions of rural women. It is also used for reading, writing and management classes, as well as for modern infrastructure and technology that help make harvesting easier and more efficient, ensuring long-term management of the Argan forest.” (moroccanoil.com)

Moroccan Oil is only featured in limited professional salons and can be used in almost every hairstyle that needs shine and moisture. The coveted line uses anti-oxidants, UV filters, vitamins A + E, and phenols in addition to its proprietary blend of argan oil. All these features aid to fortify and soften thirsty hair while equalizing porosity. Tremendous with color treated hair- it can take an over processed blond and make it look instantly moisturized and shiny with one application.

If you would like to try this product line, we recommend scheduling a consultation with an Emerson Salon stylist in order to choose the exact right product for you. We are confident you will come to depend on it as much as we do!

Quick Fixes for Common Hair Issues

Life happens and we don’t always have time to fuss with our hair as much as we’d like. To most of us, looking good and feeling good is important and all of us have some kind of issue with our hair. Whether it is limp, dull, frizzy, or just a little lack luster from time to time, I have some simple solutions for the girl/guy on the go.

      -1

Problem – You’ve woken up late and your hair is looking a little flat, but you don’t have time to start styling it from scratch. Solution – Membrane Gas by Fudge. This will give texture and volume to the limpest of hair. Use it as a hairspray for hold or for texture by manipulating the hair with your fingers while applying. The awesome thing about this product is that it actually has “memory,” meaning you can brush it out and rework the hair to your desired shape simply by applying a little more. Big hair, great texture and flexible hold. What more could you ask for?

      -3

Problem – You’ve recently had a chemical service on your hair and it is just looking a little dry and dull. Washing it too much doesn’t do much but dry it out more, over-conditioning leaves it oily and leaving it alone drives you crazy. Solution – Moroccan Oil Glimmer Shine Spray. Apply to dry, dull hair to bring out the shine and shimmer. It is infused with argan oil and UV filters to protect from further damage do to the elements. This light weight shine is easy to use and long lasting.

      -4

Problem – Curly hair that is frizzy due to weather or just natural texture. Solution – Alterna’s Shaping Balm. When applying this to dry hair it acts as an anti-humectant. It will smooth out any frizz and leave pliable, shiny curls. Plus, Alterna products are all paraben and gluten free.

Whatever your specific hair issues, there is almost certainly a solution out there. For more helpful tips, come on in and see one of our stylists here at Emerson!
