Emily and Amanda’s Favorite Things for Spring

EmilyLikes

Emily says: Caviar moisture shampoo & conditioner are a must, sulfate & paraben free great for moisture repair and skin renewal. The technology in the Caviar line is very similar to my favorite face creme La Mer. Moroccan Oil’s oil and mask are great for intensive treatment and repair, blocking UVA and UVB rays. The Stella McCartney roller ball fits perfectly into a pocket or clutch. I cannot leave the house without my Dior lip gloss. Jo Malone creme makes me feel pretty and energized for an early Spring. View Emily’s complete collection details.

AmandaLikes2

Amanda says: Spring is here and there are a few things that I must have on hand. My beauty regiment changes a bit with the warmer weather and the sun shining. Makeup of course gets brighter as do the colors in my wardrobe. I have put away my hats and scarves and pump up my hair with some new products. I start with Fudge’s Membrane Gas – applying it to damp hair, mostly at the root will give my hair some lift, aka Bridget Bardot hair. I then smooth out my ends with a bit of Alterna’s Radiant Smoothing Lotion. In the event that my hair feels a little damaged due to overexposure to the sun, I break out Kevin Murphy’s Born Again treatment. I apply it to damp hair and let it sit anywhere from 2-20 minutes, rinse and style as usual. View Amanda’s complete collection details.

What are your favorite things for spring? Post the link to your Polyvore collection in the comments!

Young Actress Grows into Sophistication

Evan Rachel Wood was currently featured as Queen Sophie-Anne for True Blood’s season 2 on HBO. Here she rocks a 40/50′s style barrel roll style with a very fetching auburn hue. Currently, Wood is filming a Robert Redford directed film called The Conspirator which chronicles the story of history’s only female led presidential assassination plot (against Abraham Lincoln.) She will play the main conspirator’s daughter and the film will be out sometime in 2010.

Evan Rachel Wood burst onto the film scene in Thirteen after appearing in many drama series on TV (CSI, Profiler, Once and Again, etc.) She has grown tremendously since then as a style maker and as an actress!

Evan has slowly ventured into new hair colors while moving away from parting her hair in the middle throughout her teen years. She has had every hair color except punk ones!

Here is a sampling of that journey (including a foray into black hair which coincided with her brief relationship with the goth rock star, Marilyn Manson.)

The common thread to all of these hairstyles is great body and shine! If you are looking for the same, try Alterna Caviar’s Rapid Repair Spray after styling!

Hair Trends Fall 2009: Dark Hair Color

This fall, shorter choppy layers, a heavy bang and darker hair color
are a few of the trends for the coming season.

Some people choose to go subtlety darker, but here, famous fashion model Ageyness Deyn has received an extreme color correction going darker on her usually bright blond hair that now make her tresses appear an opaque, cool toned black hue.

A couple products to help style Ageyness’ new do: Alterna Caviar Non-Aerosol Mousse and Shaping Balm.

  • After towel drying and rough blow-dry, apply Mousse from mid-shaft to ends.
  • Blow dry around the round of the head towards the face with a paddle brush.
  • Flat iron the ends and then apply the Shaping Balm to the bangs and ends. Blow dry from the back of the head roughly and spray with Alterna Caviar Working Spray.

****If you are looking to do a similar alteration to your hair color, consult an Emerson stylist for pricing, timing, product recommendations and maintenance suggestions for optimum results****

Spotlight on a Favorite Product

One of the products we love at Emerson Salon is:

KEVIN MURPHY’s ANTI-GRAVITY.

This product is great for fine to medium density hair to create more lift and “oomph” on usually flat/limp hair. Its an oil free volumiser and texturizer that also adds control to fly-aways with an oil free shine. Its ingredients are mostly plant extracts which feed the sensitive fine hair nutrients as opposed to many other products that use damaging chemicals.

Here is a run down on some of these natural ingredients:

  • Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Water: Beneficial for all types of hair, its balancing action regulates the production of oil from the sebaceous gland situated at the side of each follicle, which is helpful in cases of dry or oily hair. Some fine hair moves the oils through the hair very quickly and this product aids to counteract that action.
  • Honey Extract (Mel): A natural emollient that seals in moisture and softens hair. Some fine hair becomes brittle and damaged due to chemical processes and needs additional help in retaining its inner moisture content that keeps hair manageable and lustrous
  • Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Extract: Promotes hair growth and is cellular regenerative so it creates a better environment for keeping, maintaining and growing healthy hair
  • Cinnamomum Camphora (Ho Leaf) Leaf Oil: A tonic and freshener that has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.

HOW TO BEST USE ANTI-GRAVITY: Apply a dime size drop of the Anti Gravity to your towel-dried hair at the root prior to shampooing/conditioning. Style as usual. D’Arcy’s Tip: direct the blowdryer up the hair shaft from below to create sexy vixen volume for those nights out!!

For best results, ask your stylist what products work best with your particular hair style and characteristics during your next visit.

Carefree Styling Tip

Quick Tips for a Casual, Tousled look:

To quickly and easily get that carefree but awesome hair you see so often on TV, take one of the products listed below and rub it between your hands. Run your fingers through your hair in a carefree manner, lightly combing your hair with your fingers. Lightly move your hands around your scalp, quickly, using a back and forth motion or a circular motion. Practice till you like what you see!

For added texture, you can cocktail two of these hair products together for a customized style and feel…

  • Fudge’s Hair Putty

Preparing for Pictures

Some excitement is coming to Emerson Salon today (on top of our usual verve for cutting and coloring hair!)

In preparation for our upcoming Anniversary Party on Aug 22, we are doing a photo shoot of our work and some fabulous hair models to be presented for our friends and clients at the party!

If you are looking to get your own hair ready for an important event or photo shoot, here are some important things to know:

  • Hair frizz is a big NO-NO for photos as it draws focus away from the awesome hair to the little bits that pop up and out of a hairstyle. To avoid this, use a hard hold hairspray (try Kevin Murphy Session Spray or Fudge Membrane Gas after finishing the hairstyle) and use the heat of your fingers to lightly smooth down the stray hairs. Then lightly spritz Alterna Rapid Repair Spray for extra shine and luminosity that will make the style “pop”
  • Plan out the hairstyle like a piece of architecture so that every detail of the style is cohesively put together thus avoiding any messy bits or unattractive bobby pins showing through
  • Play upbeat, rhythmic music during the photo shoot. Have fun as the photos will show how you are feeling as well!
  • Take a deep breath: You can take lots of shots and pick the 10% of them that are best so loosen up and pose away!
  • Usual shots for hair pictures are: frontal headshot, profile headshot, 3/4 head and shoulders (left and right!), and a full body shot. If you want other poses for a more editorial looks: arms on hips and shoulders hunched, body movement/action poses, or go out into the world and take pics of whatever!
  • Use minimal makeup so as to accentuate your personal beauty or go all out with bold colors for a completely different you

Pictures are a great way to document the evolution of your personal style. Take new pictures of you and your hair every season. Just think how interesting a log of your looks over the years will be!

Styling Stylish Bangs

Bangs have been a stylish option in many forms throughout the “ages.” From the ancient times of Cleopatra, to the silent movie era of Louise Brooks, or on to the sexy Bettie Page or 1960′s mod Julie Christie- we can see how bangs have timelessness as well as a period feel.

When styling a solid bang like Gwen’s or Bettie Page’s:
  • towel dry after shampooing, rough dry until 40% dry and apply a cocktail of Kevin Murphy Easy Rider and Bodyguard Lotion
  • use a round brush to create the soft look on a blunt bang by slowly creating tension on the brush with medium heat. Make sure to direct the heat down the hair shaft so as not to ruffle up the cuticle layer that will cause frizz
  • flat iron any difficult pieces while using a scooping convex motion
  • spray lightly with Kevin Murphy Session Spray for shiny, firm hold

When styling more textured bangs like Jennifer Lopez or Julie Christie:

  • towed dry after shampooing, rough dry 40% dry, then add Kevin Murphy Motion Lotion
  • use a flat cushion brush to blow dry the bangs with light tension making sure to direct the medium heat dryer down the hair shaft
  • comb the dry bangs down and oscillate the dryer over the bangs to create lightness and movement
  • lightly spray with Alterna Working Spray 10-12 inches away for flexible, light hold

Achieving Big! Hair

Voluminous hair, whether down or up, can be a great way to change up the look of your hair.
If you don’t know how to achieve some of these glamorous looks, here’s how!
  • Make sure you have clean, dry hair
  • Lift up the piece/area of hair you would like to make bigger, insert a fine toothed comb into the hair from underneath (with the fingers of the comb directed to the ceiling), and slowly draw the hair in the comb towards the scalp. Repeat. This is called backcombing, teasing or ratting. If the hair stands up by itself- you’ve done it right! This will “lock” the volume in using the hair itself to create volume.
  • For softer volume, use the same technique with a cushion brush. This is called backbrushing.
  • Spray Kevin Murphy Session Spray at the teased root area and lay the hair back down.
  • Start from the bottom (nape) and work your way up. Make sure there is one small layer of hair to go over/on top of the rough volume in order to smoother out the look. If too many bumps are created, you can use a hairpick or cushion brush to gently smooth them out.
  • Curl, pin, or flat iron the ends in whatever style you like. BAM! You’ve got big hair!

This can be a great way to create a base for an updo or just create volume for a sexy, bedroom look. Most celebrities have their stylists tease their hair for many different types of styles and the technique can be invaluable.

Many hair bands in the 80′s (Motley Crue, Poison, Bon Jovi) as well as fashion plates of the 60′s, used this technique to get their signature locks.

Try and figure out who does it! Its harder to tell than it looks if it is done correctly, and soon, you will be able to do it, too!

Blowdryer + Products = Volume

There are many different tricks to fabricate fullness on hair that otherwise would go flat or limp. Here are some tips on how to style your hair based on your hair type:

  • All Straight Hair: Towel dry your hair after cleansing/conditioning. Give your hair a rough dry with a blow dryer until it is 50% dry. Apply Anti-Gravity by Kevin Murphy to only the roots and apply Anti-Aging Mousse by Alterna Caviar to the mid shaft to the ends. Section the hair into 1″ sections from nape to crown. Blow dry each section with a round brush at the nape/lower sides directing the air down the hair shaft. Once you reach just below the crown, over-direct the hair around the round brush and direct the hair upwards (from below) to create lift. Be careful to keep moving the blowdryer so you do not overly rough up the hair cuticles. Once finished, use Working Spray by Alterna Caviar only at the roots from underneath to hold the volume. You may scrunch the ends to create bounce and fullness. (To refresh the volume throughout the day you can flip your hair upside down and use a high heat dryer at the roots. Flip up and go.)
  • Curly/Wavy/Frizzy Hair (kept curly): Towel dry your hair after cleansing/conditioning. Comb out and into a part. Give your hair a rough dry until it is 70% dry. Apply a cocktail of Easy Rider, Body Guard, and Motion Lotion (total amount a little larger than quarter size) and scrunch into the mid shaft to ends of the hair. These products will give control to the curl’s volume and definition. Over-direct upwards a 3″ section of hair in your fist at a time and oscillate a high heat dryer around the scrunched curls (you can also use a diffuser.) Once the curls are mostly dry and tight, apply Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna Caviar. This adds shine and eliminates frizz. Then lightly spray Session Spray by Kevin Murphy in order to set the style or scrunch in more volume. These techniques allow you to control the hair’s volume and frizz.
  • Thick/Curly/Wavy/ Frizzy Hair (styled straight with volume): Towel dry your hair after cleansing/conditioning. Give your hair a rough dry until it is 60% dry. Add Motion Lotion and Body Guard by Kevin Murphy to the mid-shaft to ends. Section out the hair into 1″ sections from nape to crown. Blowdry directing the nozzle down the hair shaft towards the floor using a larger barrel round brush. The last 2″ sections on top of the head should be the only areas you lift and over-direct the hair up towards the ceiling using high tension. Make sure the ends are completely dry and have a bend. This creates a round lifted shape to the top of the hair without creating too much volume. Use Session Spray 10-12 inches away from the hair to set the style. To hold the volume on top you may lift up the very top sections and lightly spray underneath. These products and techniques give control and shine to the volume in your hair.

The Kevin Murphy Advantage

At Emerson Salon, we have come to truly cherish our relationship with Kevin Murphy’s hair products. Here, we share with you their philosophy, their goals and a little history on Kevin Murphy himself:

Kevin Murphy has been an editorial and session stylist for over two decades since having his first work published in Australian Vogue in 1984.

After training at Vidal Sassoon in the UK, Kevin has made a real impact in his native Australia where he has worked with major fashion houses and graced the covers of all the major global print publications, often with his trademark unstructured, beach-hair look.

THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF GREAT.HAIR

Vitamins and amino acids work the outer surface of the hair; they are the beginnings of repair. Vitamins absorb quickly into the cortex of the hair, thickening the hair and reducing the formation of split ends. Fortifying and laying the seeds of repair. Allowing the moisture to hold onto your hair.

Moisturisers from Shea Butter, cocoa Butter and Mango smooth the cuticles and soften the hair. Extracts from Peruvian Bark, Bamboo, Orange blossom and Green tea coat and protect the hair. Rose Hip oil, Hydrolysed Silk and Aloe infuse the hair with a weightless moisture that lasts beyond your next shampoo.

Essential Oils and Antioxidants go much deeper than the scalp, repairing the hair on a cellular level, feeding the hair in the dermis layers where it is born. these ingredients are multitasking; repairing and regenerating. Their structure being so small they can pass through the cellular wall and deliver essenetial ingredients and nutrients to the basal layers of the scalp, helping your hair as it grows out. Making improvements to the quality of your hair. Keeping your great hair.

The Environment

We consider the environment in all our business decisions and try as much as possible to find cleaner, more sustainable methods of doing business.

Our bottles and tubs can be recycled so please don’t let them end up in land-fill. Whenever possible, we make our outer packaging from post consumer waste to avoid the need for trees to be chopped down.

Australia is such a long way from the USA and Europe, our two largest markets, so we have decided to move the manufacturing and distribution of KEVIN.MURPHY products to the USA. This will remove the need to ship full product to the USA and reduce the shipping distance to Europe by more than half. These decisions will substantially reduce the carbon dioxide emitted by the KEVIN.MURPHY business from shipping. KEVIN.MURPHY will remain a completely Australian owned and run business.

We do not test any of our products on animals.
