Heidi Klum: It’s All In The Bob

heidi-klum_0

For many years, Heidi Klum has been a style icon as a fashion model in magazines and on the runway. Whether she is in Sport Illustrated, in a Victoria’s Secret catalog, or hosting Project Runway- Heidi always looks chic and perfectly coiffed. Heidi experiments with varying hair lengths often and even rocks some unique updo’s on red carpets.

Heidi has recently taken her hair into a shorter bob style with lots of texture. This a a popular trend: we recently discussed Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Love Hewitt’s move to the bob. This is a great length especially if you heat style or straighten your hair- less to blow dry/flatiron!

Heidi generally sticks to some sort of golden highlight or ultra light blond but always tempers it with a subtle, warm, brown lowlight. The technique used for her hair color is most definitely balayage which uses a subtle painting technique. The hair’s saturation of color is focused mainly on the mid-shaft to the ends and is more diffused towards the root. This is great for a more natural looking highlight on darker hair that does not need to be maintained as frequently as a foil. It also can mirror a more “beachified” blond with more highlights on the ends than at the top of the head. Clients are increasingly requesting this technique and are always exceedingly pleased with the result!

This balayage hair color is fantastic to wear loose waves with. It accentuates the dimension, movement, and shine to the hair.

When styling a “beachy” wave:

  • Try using Hair Resort by Kevin Murphy on damp hair and diffuse. This particular product is great on fine to medium density slightly wavy hair or strong, ethnic, coarse hair. It gives great hold and bounce to the wave. It utilizes a light gel combined with micah oxide to simulate the salty texture you get after swimming in the ocean.
  • Or try using Intense Curl Cream by Moroccan Oil on medium to thick wavy/curly textures. It uses the benefits of argan oil and a stronger hold lotion to create long lasting waves. Scrunch into damp hair, twist into tendrils all over the head, and diffuse on a low velocity high heat setting. Then, to finish, use a cool setting to set the style.
  • Finish either style with Working Spray by Alterna and a light spritz of Glimmer Shine by Moroccan Oil.

Want this “beachified” look! Consult an Emerson Stylist about what colors work best for you through the balayage technique!

Capitol Hill in Pictures: End of Summer

Also check out this seriously amazing album that Kira put together showing some archive photos from around the neighborhood dating back to the early 1900s and then shows what the buildings look like today. Even with how much things have changed on Capitol Hill over the years, its amazing how much stays exactly the same.

Oh Summer, How We Love Thee!

There are few things on Earth better than summer in Seattle. There is something about the perfect temperatures, beautiful vistas, and friendly people that makes spending this season in Seattle about as close to paradise as you can find. One of our favorite ways to enjoy these few months of bliss is to get out and explore our numerous parks. Not only is this a great way to burn some of those delicious calories we consumed at Molly Moon’s Ice Cream or the new Cupcake Royale, but it is also a great way to see some of our city’s hidden treasures and most beautiful vistas.

One park that offers a great opportunity for people watching, boat watching, geese watching, or just some great views of the city is Gasworks Park on the north shore of Lake Union. Check out some of these awesome pictures that like.electricity posted to flikr!

Extreme Summer Kicks: Looking your Best for a Day at the Amusement Park!

Being from Ohio, I really miss going to amusement parks in the summer. If you ever travel to Ohio and enjoy thrill rides and coasters, check out Cedar Point. They have been the leader in amusement park technology since before your shiny hipster arse was born!!! Here is a clip of one of their newest thrill rides, “Chaos”:

After which your hair might look like this:

To keep your hair looking great both pre and post-coaster, wear it in braids, ponytails or pigtails AND deep condition it first. Moroccan Oil makes a great Intense Hydrating Mask that keeps all hair types supple and in shape during the summer. Riding upside down on rides such as my personal favorite, the “Raptor”, wreak havoc on long hair, so be sure to deep condition it the night before and let it dry COMPLETELY before tying it up in bands (it can break; especially with the inertial, gravitational, and centripetal forces of roller coasters.

Healeo is a local vitamin and health bar that features smoothies and ice cream as excellent options to fight back against the heat and make sure you are getting your dose of Vitamin C at the same time. We love to see new neighbors and fortunately Healeo looks to be here to stay! Images and more info on Healeo’s yelp page.

Braid Your Hair to Beat the Heat!

Braiding hair can be a simpler solution for many hair situations (and it is very in!):
  • When you have a tendency to just put your hair in a pony tail, use a braid(s) instead to spice it up a little. If you add a little Kevin Murphy Leave-In Luxury when hair is slightly damp, your hair will dry into shiny waves that can be finger tousled into an easy-to-do down style for night.
  • Consider braiding your bangs and hairline into a part to get it out of your face and avoid sweaty hair when it is hot
  • Put your hair into two braids at the nape of the neck, then wrap them up over the top of the head and pin for a simple updo. Then spray with Alterna Caviar Rapid Repair for shine and luminosity.
