How to Get Matt Smith’s Look from BBC’s Doctor Who

I’m a huge SciFi fan and one of my favorite shows is Doctor Who. The role of the main character, the time traveler enigmatically named The Doctor, is played by actor Matt Smith. Nearing the end of its fall season, Matt Smith returns to the role.

He has very long hair that is cut to give him not only long bangs, but a far left part. For the show he usually has it somewhat neater (though it always ends up a bit more messy by the end of the episode). This style would best be styled with our good friend, Kevin.Murphy Body.Builder. This volumizing mousse can have a tremendous effect on the hair.

First, part the hair with a deep part. Apply a small handful of the mousse into slightly damp hair. Then using a blowdryer and a Denman Brush, dry the roots of the hair away from the direction you will eventually want them to go. Do this section by section. Blowdry the rest of the hair straight. Brush the hair with some Alterna Caviar Working Hairspray and you have a nice clean style. For a messier style, use Kevin.Murphy Gritty.Business or Sticky.Business rather than hairspray.

This this is a great style for you? Do you have any question for me? Book your appointment with me at Emerson Salon, today!

Bringing back the Part: Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd’s Look in True Blood

Not many men these days have parts in their hair. Its a trend that is definitely finding its way back in men’s hair fashion but few can pull it off like Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd, from True Blood.

The trend of parting the hair is making its way back slowly but surely. Skarsgård usually parts his hair on the left. Finding where to part your hair is a combination of observing where your hair naturally wants to part, and fighting against or working with any strong growth patterns in the front hairline. If you have strong cowlicks that prevent you from styling your hair like you would want to, try using a blow dryer to dry the hair where you want it to go.

SkarsgÃ¥rd has his hair relatively short, yet long enough to give it style. To achieve this look, you’ll need a finishing product that is going to give you hold without the ‘crunch.’ That’s why I recommend using Kevin.Murphy Night.Rider for this style. Use a small amount and add more as needed to give the style hold and some of that clean cut, bad boy charm. It is a product that ‘sets’ which means that you have about 60 seconds to manipulate it to your liking and have it hold that style. This is great for taming down unruly or poofy sides.

Think this is a good look for you? Come on in and schedule an appointment with me, today!

How to get True Blood’s Joe Manganiello Look

Manganiello plays the devilishly handsome werewolf in HBO’s hit show True Blood. His character, Alcide Herveaux, is a werewolf so he needs to have a style to match his wild persona. His longer hair and beard give him a great look that can cater to the rugged look he needs for the show, while giving him the ability to have cleaner looks for events.

His longer hair allows him to push his hair back for a more clean look. This is a great time to use Kevin.Murphy Night.Rider. Simply wash the hair, dry it, and comb it with your fingers. Use a small amount of Night.Rider, rubbing it in your palms and dispersing it throughout the hair and pushing it back lightly, combing it with your fingers. Try not to push it down, because we want to keep the volume.

Longer hair can be a great look, but it can need a little more attention. This is especially true if you have resistant cowlicks that need to be blown dry for you to be able to work with them. Even using a small amount of Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider for a flexible hold, defining texture and fighting frizz, can make these kinds of looks much more manageable and attractive.

Interesting in trying out some of these products in your hair? Think this is a good look for you? Make an appointment with me at Emerson Salon today!

Style Shifts in Hollywood

It seems now is the time to change hair looks- from Hollywood, to New York, from music to film, and from celebrity to everyday jane!

Here we look at a fun, outside the box change with Lauren Conrad’s new blue and purple hair tips. This is an easy way to transform blond hair into a more vivacious and bold, new look! We love this spunky new addition that transforms her from her usual put together look into a more effervescent beauty!

To style: Rough blowdry with Anti.Gravity by Kevin.Murphy. Spray in Hair Resort Spray By KM and curl with a large barrel curling iron. Finish with Rapid Repair Spray for shine by Alterna.

For a few days, people thought Vanessa Hudgens was sporting a short wig for a film but alas! it was actually a drastically shorter do! Vanessa has naturally wavy hair that is very thick and dense and has been long ever since she debuted in High School Musical. This cut is great as it still softens her and actually aids in making her look taller as the petite Vanessa was visually almost overpowered by her hair length. The perimeter hits past the ears and leaves a rounded nape in addition to long layers that are pulled back away from the face.

To style: Apply MoroccanOil Glimmer Shine to towel dried hair and dry with a medium sized, round bristle brush away from the face. To finish, lightly spray Texture Master by Kevin.Murpy for movement, height and hold.

Lastly, we came to know Evan Rachel Wood’s True Blood character Queen Sophie-Anne LeClerq as a feisty, redheaded lesbian vampire. Recently, though, Evan opted to completely alter her look into a shorter do with cropped sides and a longer, textured top. She also toned down the red by “browning out” the sides and nape in addition to bleach and toning the top into a beige blond with a balayage technique.

To style: On dry hair apply Night.Rider by Kevin.Murphy to the top lengths for texture and height. Then spray with Session.Spray by Kevin.Murphy for height and hold. Tip: Using your fingers and a medium heat blow dryer will help set the hair spray when creating height.

Looking to shift your style, too? Subtle or Dramatic we are here to serve at Emerson and we give you,

How to Get Francis Barber’s Look from Doctor Who

Francis Barber plays as one of the mysterious villains of the BBC show Doctor Who. Little is known of Barber’s character so far, but we know that she can definitely rock her futuristic, femme fatale updo!

doctorwho_s06_e07_18__large

The best way to get this look is to have your hair brushed back towards your crown and the top of your hair. Pin the hair in place and then proceed to spray the hair with Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager to protect the hair from heat. Take your curling iron and, while taking small sections, curl the hair and pin the curls in place to cool. In the front, curl the hair away from your face and let it drop down to cool.

Once the curls have cooled, un-pin them and break up the curls. Take bobby pins and begin to pin the curls down to keep them close to the head. She keeps her hanging curl relatively intact, so I would recommend leaving that alone. Spray with Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray and you’re done!

Saying Goodbye to Oprah

Oprah’s last season is over and we salute her devotion to true beauty and education here at Emerson Salon. We wish we could give her a going away present as a send off but she has everything! Including a network, O.W.N.!

If we ever had the privilege of doing Oprah’s hair (her stylist Andre does a fantastic job of transforming her daily) we would probably use the MoroccanOil line. We’re sure she would greatly appreciate how the MoroccanOil company contributes to a women’s co-op that cultivated the argan nut for the product line. The dry oil has tons of UV inhibitors to protect color and does not build up on hair like silicone serums you can buy at drugstores.

Oprah likes to wear her hair a number of ways so here are some tips on what to use on African American textured hair:

To straighten: Cocktail the MoroccanOil Oil Treatment with the Hydrating Style Cream. It gives ample moisture for smoothing hair when blowdrying and flat ironing. Moroccan Oil is a treatment line so when using high heat implements it is the perfect way to style and condition simultaneously.

For natural curl: Use the MoroccanOil Intense Curl Cream for ultimate frizz control and moisture when blow dry diffusing.

For added moisture and conditioning: Use MoroccanOil Moisturizing Mask for 10 minutes on towel dried hair once a week. Easy to apply and no major wait time so you can get on with your day.

Thank you Oprah for all your many years of gab, charity and education. You have made us better.

Glee’s Chord Overstreet Debuts New Hairstyle – Here’s How To Get It

Glee Chord Overstreet

Glee’s Chord Overstreet recently debuted a shorter darker hairstyle.

Chord told UsMagazine.com, “At the end of the season, I just wanted a haircut, so I cut it all off. I cut the highlights out.â€

Chord’s cut brings him much shorter and darker than he was before. With him going so dark, he needs to pre-color his hair to ensure that the color stays and doesn’t appear shallow. With his cut, He took it much shorter than his normal cut. Here he has about an inch to two inches on the sides which are textured to accommodate his natural wave. The top is slightly longer on the top, but still left short on the top so that it is easy to bring up. To style it, use Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider on dry or slightly damp/almost completely dry hair and bring push it up how you want it. The look is very messy, so there is no need to try and have everything perfect. for a slightly stronger hold, substitute the Easy.Rider for Night.Rider.

Catch the season finale May 24th!

How To Get The Don Draper Hairstyle

Don Draper (Jon Hamm), the charismatic main character of the hit show, Mad Men, is a man who is in control. In the show, Draper is Creative Director of Manhattan advertising firm Sterling Cooper. For a strong business leaders, he has his hair styled in the classic 1960′s “businessman comb-over”, a style that can add class, style and professionalism to any look.

Don Draper

This can actually be a very simple look to create for yourself. Wash your hair with Alterna Life Volume shampoo and conditioner. Once you towel dry the hair, apply about a quarter size of the Alterna Hemp Hard Hold Gel into your hands and run it through the hair (Gel can be a great product that can be lightweight and provide innovative styling techniques, but avoid overloading the hair with the gel. We don’t our hair to be crunchy.). Once in the hair, use a come to create a part wherever you feel comfortable. From there, simply comb the hair into place; the sides going back and the top going up and to the back. You may find it helpful to loosely comb the hair back as you would like it, then use the edges of your hands to define the front as you see fit.

Don Draper

Finish with a light spray from the Alterna Bamboo Luminous Shine Spray and you’re done! You can dry it by setting your dryer to low speed and continuing to brush it into place, but I prefer to let it air dry to keep the structure you just created. This can be a great hair style for when you’re in a rush and want to look a bit more clean cut. Since this style can be tweaked in many different ways, I recommend spending some time and playing around with your hair; discover exactly how you like to wear it.

The Secret of the American Teenager: They have great hair

I don’t watch a lot of TV but my guilty pleasure is The Secret Life of the American Teenager. There is something about this show that I can’t seem to get enough of!  Every time I watch it I wish I had the girls’ wardrobe and a hair team to make me look this great!  Three of the show’s characters have amazing hair color. Here are some great examples of blond, brown and red color done right.

Grace –Blond
I am tired of the over-processed, solid blond look. Here is a more flattering blond option.  Grace has a darker base of a level 6 (light brown) that gives the blond dimension. There are two different levels of blond in her hair, Level 11 (platinum blond) and a darker level 9 (yellow or honey blond).  The platinum is more prominent, to give hair that overall light blond feel and is broken up by a few light pieces of the darker honey blond.  Foiling with two different blonds and having a darker base makes for a perfect blond.

Amy – Light Brown
Amy is a great example of light brown in this picture.  It is a warm (red brown) level 6.  It is a simple all over color but, at a level 6, it shows a lot more of the red brown tone.  This color, with her skin tone and eye color is very striking and shows why not EVERY woman is a blond!

Madison-Red
Although she is a natural redhead, you too can have this amazing red even if you’re not!    She is considered a copper (red /blond) level 7.  There are many different types of red you can pick from. This one is so great on her because of her skin tone and blue eyes.  Red works really well with blue or green eyes and with a fair skin tone. Don’t rule out being a redhead, it is a great option for a lot of girls!

Tired of your basic over-processed blond or dull brown color? Maybe feeling like a dramatic change and want to go red? Take a cue from these beautiful stars, and make your appointment at Emerson today!

The Powerful Men of HBO’s True Blood

trueblood-mouth2

Since 2008, Alan Ball’s HBO drama has entranced its viewers with the special goings on of the supernatural world of vampires, shapeshifters and psychics. Now into season 3, the fervor for this overwhelming trend in entertainment is ablaze for these politically challenged blood suckers.

What makes this show unique is its amazing cast of men which includes Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgard and Ryan Kwanten. These sexy hunks have wet the appetite of viewers with their intensity, individual style and allure. In addition, each of these men exhibit the casual, modern trend of wearing hair longer than traditional clipper cuts.

eric-northman-alexander-skarsgard-season-2

In the first season of True Blood, we saw Alex’s character, Eric, with a shoulder length style which eventually morphed into the shorter version it is now. This style is long on top and front and layered through the sides. This is a very versatile style as it can be slicked back or parted on the side. A great product for this style is Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy. It uses shea butter to soften the hair for control and give it flexible hold.

stephen1

In contrast to Eric, Stephen’s character, Bill, looks like he has a long layered cut with added razor texture. This thins the hair out and creates more of a “piece-y” quality. This technique is great for darker colored hair that isn’t prone to frizz as it provides more interest to the style than a basic haircut. We recommend styling with Texturizing Glaze by Alterna to aid in defining the style.

ryan_kwanten_narrowweb__300x448

Lastly, the wayward Jason Stackhouse character’s hair is sporting a shorter shear cut. This cut is brought in close through the back and sides and then softly layered through the longer length on top. This haircut can also be razored for fullness but is not recommended on finer or low density hair types. Styling this look is easy with Extreme Wax by Alterna. Apply the product and muss the hair in an upward motion with your fingers.

We are so excited to see what surprising plot twists are in store for us as we watch Bill and Sookie struggle to keep their love alive amidst all the vampire chaos. We’re sure no matter what, we’ll see these creatures take a bite out of life in 2010!
