Are you ready for Glee?

glee-cast-photo

Well its Tuesday and you know what that means. It’s time for a new episode of Glee. This season has already been jam packed with amazing performances. We recently did a post on Jane Lynch’s character, Sue Sylvester from Glee, doing an exact remake of the Madonna Vogue video. As it turns out, the Madonna episode took the highest ratings of the night and even topped the iTunes charts. The power of Madge lives on! In addition, the queen of Broadway, Kristin Chenoweth, even guest starred recently and wowed us with her vocal prowess.

The actors and actresses on Glee not only have amazing vocal abilities, but also look great. If you are looking for your own fantastic hairstyle here is how they do some of our favorites on Glee.

Lea-Michele-Idol

Lea Michele plays Rachel Berry in the show- the beautiful singer with 2 dads. Her hair is always silky smooth and shiny! How would we make you look like her? First, we would probably add a rich darkest brown shade all over (demi-permanent or permanent.) For dimension, balayaged highlights can be added to the ends for softness. Then we would use Radiant Smoothing Lotion by Alterna and blow dry with a round brush from the nape up. Add a little Glimmer Spray Shine by Moroccan Oil for tremendous shine and softness after the blow dry. Lastly, take a high heat curling iron to 2-3″ vertical sections only on the ends to create bouncy texture.

matthew_morrison_glee_photoa

Matthew Morrison plays Will Shuester- the teacher who dukes it out with the Cheerios each week while attempting to revitalize the school’s Glee club. Matthew’s hair is unique in that he has a lot of it and its tremendously curly. If you are a guy who has this texture- here are some tips!!

  • Ask your Emerson Stylist to give you a haircut that is clean around the neck and ears but softly layered through the sides, back and crown. The hair should be left about 2″ long to allow for curl. Added texture could be used to control curl and eliminate bulk. The hair at the top of the forehead/hairline can be left longer so it can be over directed to the soft layers at the crown.
  • To style: Add Moroccan Oil Intense Curl Cream once towel dried. Diffuse with a blowdryer or allow to dry naturally.
  • Add Hair Putty by Fudge to the longer hair at the hairline and using a boar bristle brush, softly brush back the texture into some height. Spray with Session Spray by Kevin Murphy for extra hold and set with a low setting medium heat blowdryer.

We can’t wait to see what brilliance Glee comes up with next!

Glee Strikes A Pose

3-sue-armpits_l

It seems everyone is in love with Fox’s triple threat: Glee. Singing, dancing, acting – all wrapped up in a tight little high school bow! The current season is pulling out all the stops and even included a take by take remake of Madonna’s music video Vogue in black and white. There are even pictures on the internet of an upcoming Lady Gaga episode!

Jane Lynch’s character, Sue Sylvester, goes glam in the Vogue music video and utilizes a few different hair looks throughout.

  • The first look: The wavy, curly blond bob with tremendous shine and bounce.
  • The second look: Added long hair extensions for her profile look over the piano top.
  • The third look: Shiny, slick 1940′s waves.

For all of these looks, we recommend using Moroccan Styling Oil as a pre-styling product after shampooing. It imparts shine and manageability and can really help if you choose to shampoo set the slick 40′s wave with pin curls. Always finish with a bit of Rapid Repair Spray and Working Spray by Alterna.

We wonder what Glee will think up next!!!

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s New Short Hairstyle

jennifer-love-hewitt-in-hairstyle 1269437767_hewitt-290

Jennifer Love Hewitt has just come out with a book entitled, “The Day I Shot Cupid,” that reviews the fun lessons she has learned about love while dating in Hollywood. She compiled tips and funny anecdotes to encourage women to take control of their love experiences through the power of text messaging, personal grooming and more. Jennifer recently broke up with her Ghost Whisperer co-star, Jamie Kennedy, but tapped him for a modern male perspective. His wit and expertise help provide balance in the book by giving tips on male behavior.

Over the years, Jennifer has had many boyfriends…. and hairstyles. Recently, she cut off her long layered locks into a layered bob style with loose waves. She has gone shorter before as evidenced by the sleeker style bob she sported a few years back.

Short_Hairstyles 1269535528_jenniferlove_lg

Jennifer changes her haircolor often and has worn soft black, dark chocolate, dimensional browns with golden highlights and even an all over light chestnut red/brown. Her medium complexion works well with many changes but drastic reds and blondes probably should be avoided.

To achieve Jennifer’s latest look of loose waves on shorter styled hair, use these tips:

  • After showering, lightly scrunch the wet hair with a towel to remove excess moisture.
  • Apply Motion Lotion by Kevin Murphy from mid shaft to ends. This product is a curl enhancer and also helps hold the style even on finer hair textures.
  • Using a medium sized round brush, blow dry the hair section by section from the nape up. Make sure to over direct the crown and bang sections above the head to maximize volume and body like in the picture.
  • Spray the hair lightly with Working Spray by Alterna in order to provide better hold.
  • Take the hair in 1- 2″ sections about 3″ from the part. Curl the hair vertically from the temples all around the head. Finger separate the curls into loose waves after the hair has cooled.
  • Spray with Extra Hold by Alterna to finish.

What style will Jennifer do next? Better yet, what style will you do next? Let us know!

Kelly Osbourne’s Rocking Hairstyles

phpThumb_generated_thumbnailjpg

Now that Dancing with the Stars new season is in full sway (we’re rooting for Evan Lysacek!) we nostalgically look back at previous casts.

In particular, Kelly Osbourne’s many hair transformations over the years show how altering your hair can completely shift your overall style. Her look is reinvented often with a change of haircolor, cut and product. At times she is fun and edgy and others she is modern yet elegant.

Recently, Kelly altered her favorite shade of blond to a more purply platinum beige tone. It flattens out her tonal value and reflects light in a more balanced way in order to draw more attention to her angular features.

Kelly most likely receives a bleach and tone service that includes styling with a high shine product. Want to try out her look? Use these tips:

  • After an extensive bleach and tone service, use a deep conditioner like Moroccan Oil’s Reconstructing Masque for 7 -10 minutes. This will restore moisture and shine in addition to equallizing the porosity of the hair after extensive chemical lightening. You may do this up to 2X a week in the first month after your initial coloring service.
  • Use color safe shampoo and conditioner in order to maintain the tone on overly porous hair. We recommend Caviar Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner which will extend your haircolor in addition to helping restore luster, manageability and shine.
  • When styling, use medium to low heat as high heat will add to breakage and split ends on overlly senstive hair. Use Bodyguard Lotion by Kevin Murphy before your blowout to drive out excess water while imparting Peruvian Bark moisture. When finishing, use Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna. It imparts high shine while simultaneously aiding in its repair with a concentration of vitamins and lightweight silicones. Hint: This product is also good as a refresher on second day hair. It breaks down heavy product and also has a wonderful aroma to get rid of unwanted smells.

Here are some of the other looks that Kelly has worn:

We look forward to seeing the upcoming styles of the current season of DWTS. The great costumes and the hair! Who are you rooting for?

New Season of Shear Genius

shear-genius-season-3-meet-the-cast-01_0

I have a slight addiction to reality shows and Shear Genius is no exception. I am on the edge of my seat with anticipation for the new season. With a new host, new judges and fierce competition, we are sure to get our fill of drama. If you remember the show Blow Out, then you have to be just as excited as I am. That’s right, Jonathan Antin is back on Bravo. He will be one of the celebrity hairstylist judges this season. It’s not quite the same, but will do just fine.

Twelve accomplished stylists start out in the competition against one another to win $100,000, an apprenticeship and a shot at styling hair for Allure Magazine. The seasoned stylists are put to the test in various situations where they have to create picture perfect styles in sometimes less than desirable settings. Alongside Jonathan Antin is another celebrity stylist and hair color expert, Kim Vo. This will be his second season judging the competition.

The show provides a look into what goes on behind the chair to an extent. The producers add twists and drama to each of the challenges to make for a more intriguing show of course. It does give you insight into how a stylist decides on their approach to each look and the many different ways to accomplish the goal of making someone beautiful. I love the diversity of the stylists and each of their unique takes on their art form.

Tune in to the premiere of Shear Genius this Wednesday, February 3rd at 10:00pm!

Best Hair at the Golden Globes

Hot hair at the 2010 Golden Globe Awards.

Despite the unusual rain in Los Angeles this past Sunday, the stars managed to look incredible on the red carpet. These three, in particular, were my faves.

sandra-bullock-golden-globes

Sandra Bullock, in her gorgeous Bottega Veneta gown, wore her hair swept to the side with loose curls. The strong side part in any updo is a great way to show off any earrings and add a fun element to a sophisticated look.

Actress Olivia Wilde arrives at the 67th Annual Golden Globe Awards at The Beverly Hilton Hotel on January 17, 2010 in Beverly Hills, California.

Olivia Wilde, from the hit show House, also wore her hair in loose curls. However hers is worn sleek in the front with thick, cascading curls down the back. A slightly more formal look than Sandra’s. Her stylist may have added some hair extensions to thicken up the look. To duplicate this look, grab some hair from your local beauty supply and have your stylist incorporate it into your natural hair to add fullness. For a one time event, artificial hair will do just fine and is much more affordable.

rby-hair-golden-globes-courteney-cox-de

Finally, Cougar Town star, Courtney Cox wore her hair completely up with just a few strands left down to frame her face in front. Not an unusual or different look, but done well nonetheless. She always manages to look classic, tasteful and glamorous. Her dark hair also makes her baby blues just pop. Her updo is simple, with a little volume in the crown which pulls the whole style together.

There you have it. My top three at the Golden Globes. Stay tuned for my Grammy picks!

Young Actress Grows into Sophistication

Evan Rachel Wood was currently featured as Queen Sophie-Anne for True Blood’s season 2 on HBO. Here she rocks a 40/50′s style barrel roll style with a very fetching auburn hue. Currently, Wood is filming a Robert Redford directed film called The Conspirator which chronicles the story of history’s only female led presidential assassination plot (against Abraham Lincoln.) She will play the main conspirator’s daughter and the film will be out sometime in 2010.

Evan Rachel Wood burst onto the film scene in Thirteen after appearing in many drama series on TV (CSI, Profiler, Once and Again, etc.) She has grown tremendously since then as a style maker and as an actress!

Evan has slowly ventured into new hair colors while moving away from parting her hair in the middle throughout her teen years. She has had every hair color except punk ones!

Here is a sampling of that journey (including a foray into black hair which coincided with her brief relationship with the goth rock star, Marilyn Manson.)

The common thread to all of these hairstyles is great body and shine! If you are looking for the same, try Alterna Caviar’s Rapid Repair Spray after styling!

Tina Fey’s Elegant UpDo at the Emmy’s

Check out our favorite funny-girl Tina Fey’s fantastic updo for the 2009 Emmy awards. Combined with her Gucci dress, this look helped her to pull of a elegant and sophisticated look that contrasted nicely with her much more down-to-earth 30 Rock persona. We love the intricacies that are visible in the second picture and this just goes to show that updo’s offer a great opportunity to make any event stand out and make a new statement for yourself. Regardless of the 5 Emmys the show took home this year, we think the hairstyle that Tina rocked was the major source of her confidence this year.

Don’t forget, 30 Rock is coming back for a new season starting on October 15th. We can’t wait!!

More photos of Tina Fey and other arrivals at the Emmy’s on zimbio.com.

The Hair Of Eliza Dushku of Dollhouse

Who else fell in love with Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse last season? We did! It was truly an amazing show, but can you really expect anything less from Joss? After watching the unaired 13th episode this summer Epitaph One (which co-starred Felicia Day!), I can’t wait to see what the new season will bring. If you are looking to get fantastic hair like Buffy alum and star of Dollhouse, Eliza Dushku, here is what you need to do.

Eliza
‘s hair is part of a very modern trend that we like to call “casual wave.” Ironically, the casual wave does require styling work, but looks extremely sexy and laid back. Eliza has naturally wavy hair, so we recommend that you do the following:

  • After shampooing and conditioning (we recommend Luxury Wash and Born Again Treatement by Kevin Murphy) towel dry
  • Rough dry the hair until it is 70% dry
  • Apply a cocktail of Alterna’s Caviar Smoothing Lotion and Kevin Murphy’s Motion Lotion to the midshaft-ends. This will protect the hair during the blowdry, eliminate frizz and curl as well as creating hold to any bend on the ends
  • Round brush with a boar bristle brush section by section from nape to top using high tension. Alternate flipping the hair out and then under to create volume and texture
  • Once finished, take a flexible spray like Alterna’s Working Spray and spray 10-12 inches away on all of the mid-shaft-ends
  • Use a high heat curling iron (1 1/2″ barrel) and twist small 2 in. sections around the barrel. Then alternate with regular spirals/curls with the barrel iron (make sure to create them in different directions.)
  • Pick out some of the curls into waves and then spray with Kevin Murphy’s Session Spray to set

Remember, to achieve best results we recommend consulting with a trained stylist! Stay up to date with all the latest hair trends by following Emerson Salon on Facebook.
