Recently, I posed a question on my facebook fan page (D’Arcy Harrison: Hair Designer):
“What is the biggest challenge with your hair?”
Hands down the number one answer was creating fullness and volume.
Many of the fashion magazines this Spring (such as Vogue and Elle) are highlighting trends in creating volume in their editorial spreads. Here I will review some possible solutions to aid in creating what you want most: big, sexy hair!

First off, always start with a shampoo and conditioner that will assist in prepping your hair to create fullness. I like to use the Alterna Caviar Volume series on my finer hair clients. It uses seasilk which contains moisturizing marine botanicals and hair thickening peptides (proteins). Another great haircare series is Kevin.Murphy’s Angel series which uses paraben and sulfate free ingredients plus a lightweight milk protein that won’t make your hair heavy.
Ask your Emerson stylist which hair cut will best create volume and lift on your hair type. For example: If you have extremely dense, long, straight fine hair a possible solution could be a trim with round layers and added thinning on the ends. Each hair type will have its own haircut solutions to create more volume. Its always important to share with your stylist pictures of what you like and haircuts you have liked in the past.
I use Anti.Gravity by Kevin.Murphy on many clients who want hold and volume. I apply it to damp hair all over, comb through, and style. This product is considered an oil-free volumizer and uses lavender to aid in creating weightless support to any style. Another Kevin.Murphy product that is becoming increasingly popular for those who want to bump up the volume is the Powder.Puff. Shake a little of this sticky powder into the roots, rub the area with your fingers and voila! Instant vava volume!

It is also important to know which styling techniques work best to create volume. I recommend round brushing your hair with a larger boar bristle brush, making sure to raise the brush above the section to create lift. Once complete, try using the same brush to “back brush” the roots by brushing downwards towards the scalp. This will rough up the hair and create a soft volume. For a higher Amy Winehouse volume- try backcombing the hair by lifting it above the head and locking the hair into the crown with the comb. This will create a solid base that will hold itself up. Hint: Insert the comb into the hair, push down towards the roots and then pull the comb out of the hair and repeat.
Once your style is satisfactory, you will need to set the finished style with a fixative or hair spray. Working Spray by Alterna is my absolute favorite. It is lightweight, doesn’t dry the hair out and doesn’t get crispy crunchy. It’s always brushable. Hold the can 10-12 inches away from the overall style and mist. Hint: Lift up the roots with your fingers and spray underneath and into the root to set volume.
Ask and ye shall receive…..expert volumizing advice! Have fun!
