Here are just a few photo’s of a recent wedding I did this past March. After some heavy rain several days prior to the wedding ( the forecast also called for rain that day) the sun came out, and the sky cleared up just in time to get some amazing shots by http://www.locketstudios.com/! Ellen was a beautiful bride!! We worked together to come up with the perfect look. I did a wrap around/french braid in the back of the head, and a lot of backcombing around the crown/bang area. I used one of my favorite hot tools to create a lot of texture so that it would also give LOT’S of volume, this prevented damaging the hair by trying to braid through backcombing. It’s definitely the season for bridal hair, or just a creative style. If you have a special event coming up, I’d love the opportunity to offer my services to you!

D’Arcy’s Fun and RAW Experience

This week I had the honor to be a featured artist for the RAW artists showcase at iMusic. There was art, fashion,music, makeup, hair and great times! Part of participating in a showcase with RAW is the portfolio building as well as a taped video piece which I will share when it comes out in 3 weeks! But for now.. I will share with you my thoughts behind what I created!

I want to start off by saying that this runway show was an opportunity to “push the envelope,” on what I could accomplish with hair. I get to work with stellar clients daily making their styles work for them and their needs but for one night I threw practicality to the wind! I let my imagination wander to places, ideas and concepts I wanted to explore. One of the main concepts I kept coming back to was,”SCULPTURAL FLOW.”

What this means to me (as a daughter of a sculptor) is a 3 dimensional (3D) hair representation of how flow is created in hair and with hair. In the same guise, I also wanted to see how flow can be stopped or redirected with hair in order to establish different components of a style. The images that kept running through my mind were of: Talum and Chichen Itza pyramids in Mexico, rippled sands in an Arabian desert, and the waves in the “Bride of Frankenstein” hair.

In order to accomplish the varied styles, I used clip in human hair extensions. In order to ad fullness to one of the styles I custom colored the pieces to match the models hair using It&ly’s Vivly semipermanent Titian to repigmentize and then toned with It&ly’s Colorly transluscent color formula 7FA tutti frutti and 10 volume. Other clip ins were sprayed with costume spray color, Extra Hold Hairspray by Alterna Caviar and Gloss Sealant Spray from Blick art supply. In order to set the pieces I used a triple barrel wave iron in order to have a consistent, fabricated wave pattern in the pieces.

I also employed some old school styling tricks like back combing, backbrushing, and creative bobby pinning (they have to be hidden!) in addition to using newer products like Morroccan Oil and Anti gravity+Session Spray by Kevin Murphy. I am super proud of the work I did and I hope you do like it too….. Enjoy “going with the flow!”

How to Look Your Best on the Wedding Day

Ah, wedding season is upon us! Some of you are getting married, some of you are participating in a wedding or some are going to be attending-but regardless of what role you play, you want to look your absolute best!

Here, I have shown some examples of simple, classic formal styles for weddings and some that get a little bit more creative. The range of styles is wide so I tell my brides to schedule a consultation a few weeks before the big day. Its always best to bring pictures of what you would like and not like as I can create a personalized look for you based on the elements you would like to include. No bad prom looking hair for you and my updos are built to last through sweat, tears and dancing!

I also recommend a bridal practice session ahead of time to trouble shoot any problems in the style. It eases your mind and helps me to plan out the best layout for the hair to maximize aesthetics for pictures as well as making sure the style stays all day into night!

How to Get Francis Barber’s Look from Doctor Who

Francis Barber plays as one of the mysterious villains of the BBC show Doctor Who. Little is known of Barber’s character so far, but we know that she can definitely rock her futuristic, femme fatale updo!

The best way to get this look is to have your hair brushed back towards your crown and the top of your hair. Pin the hair in place and then proceed to spray the hair with Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager to protect the hair from heat. Take your curling iron and, while taking small sections, curl the hair and pin the curls in place to cool. In the front, curl the hair away from your face and let it drop down to cool.

Once the curls have cooled, un-pin them and break up the curls. Take bobby pins and begin to pin the curls down to keep them close to the head. She keeps her hanging curl relatively intact, so I would recommend leaving that alone. Spray with Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray and you’re done!

How to Get Madonna’s Vogue Look

I recently came across a great Mashup while on Youtube. It combines Madonna’s Vogue and Ducksauce’s song Barbra Streisand. Her style in the video is reminds us of current trends that have people shaving or pinning their hair on the sides of their head to get that Mohawk look, or just accentuate top volume.

To get this style with short hair, use a small curling iron or rollers to set curls in the hair, using Kevin.Murphy Damage.Manager to prep the hair. Once the curls have cooled, remove any clips or rollers and use your fingers and a small bit of the Kevin.Murphy Easy.Rider to separate and define the curls. Use the Kevin.Murphy Powder.Puff to add any volume you need to the top. Then section out the sides of the hair and brush it back and up towards your crown and pin in place with bobby pins, being sure to hide them within the hair.

Learn how to do Adele’s Bun from “Rolling in the Deep”

Yet again, I am impressed by Adele. I love, love, LOVE her! Her new single, ‘Rolling in The Deep,’ has been on repeat in my head for weeks. The official video for the single is unique, artistic, and refreshing. I came across an alternate video with the studio footage and was in awe! From her voice, to the side bun she rocks, to her lashes, she has a great sense of personal style. Her hair throughout both videos are great inspiration for summer hair styles.

My favorite look of hers from these videos is her side bun with a twisted bang! For a good look at this, go to 2:06 and 2:45 on the video. To get this look you need to start with the right products. When your hair is damp work in Kevin.Murphy’s Anti.Gravity for root volume, and Hair.Resort for texture and hold. Then blow dry your hair upside down for maximum volume. Start with parting out your bangs; remember that the farther over the eye you go, the better.

Back comb/tease the rest of your hair at the roots, and then smooth the surface down with a brush so that you don’t see all the back combing you have done. The bun will be on the opposite side you parted your bangs. When you’re smoothing out your hair, smooth it towards the side the bun will be on. Loosely pull the hair into a low pony tail behind your ear, level with your jaw. Once it is in the pony tail tease it with a brush, again smoothing the surface. Twist your hair around the base of the pony tail and secure it with bobby pins to create the bun. The bangs are the easy part! All you have to do is twist them away from your face and pin the end into the base of the bun.

If you watch the video closer you will see she has a few different styles you can re-create with the basics I showed you! Good luck and enjoy!

Ready, Set, Sexy Hot Rollers, Go!

Want sexy flowing curls? Want volume for your up do? Hot rollers are the answer! They provide easy volume, texture and long lasting curl! With good hair products and a set of multiple-sized hot rollers you can create great Holiday hair with ease! First you need a good set of hot rollers in different sizes. Clients always ask what rollers they can get that aren’t too expensive but still good quality. I found Conair Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers and LOVE them!

Waves that Bounce:

Hot rollers will give you lift at the roots, volume all around and a soft wave! First use Alterna Curl and Control Styling Cocktail in damp hair and blow dry straight. Then in 2 inch sections roll in small hot rollers, spray in Alterna Working Hairspray as you go to give a more flexible hold. Don’t worry about taking exact sections in any particular order; you don’t want it to look too perfect. When the rollers have cooled in your hair take them out, shake your head, brush your fingers through your hair with a dab of Moroccan oil to smooth it, and you’re set!

Smooth Wave:

Want your hair smooth and straight with a nice wave at the end for a polished look? Rollers are the answer for this as well! Again you will start with damp hair, put in Alterna Straight and Sleek Styling Cocktail and blow dry. Then part your hair off to one side, taking 3 inch sections starting on top and roll them with large rollers all over the head. When the rollers cool take them out and spray a paddle brush with Alterna Working air spray, and brush the front section to the side. Finish the look by loosening the curl and brushing the curl to the bottom. Don’t worry about brushing the curl out completely, with good product you won’t lose the curl!

Volume and curl, up and away:

Loose wave up do’s are a great look for holiday parties, and never look over done! First put in a root volumizing product like Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity at the root and Alterna Texture Glaze when your hair is damp. Now blow dry. Alternate medium to large rollers starting at the crown and stagger sections in a brick pattern along the back of your head. When the rollers cool tease the roots all over with a fine tooth comb, spray hair with Alterna Working Hairspray. Then gather the hair in the center of your head, twist up, and insert bobby pins all over to secure it. You can also use accessories, such as a simple ribbon, totie the look together!

Retro Hair: How to wear a Vintage UpDo for Any Event.

Partially due to the style influence of Mad Men, we are seeing a return of retro hairdos today.Our clients ask for hairstyles from every decade.

An example of this is my client, Le. She wanted a “50’s or 60’s Updo” for her Halloween costume. She sent me various pictures and the one that we chose to replicate ended up being a hairstyle much like one worn by Christine Hendricks’s character Joan Holloway.

Not quite a Beehive!
Le’s hair wasn’t quite long enough for a beehive, so I worked with her hair as is. To achieve her look, we prepped her hair with a KMX Treatment and rough-dried her hair using Anti Gravity and Born Again Treatment. I then curled all of her hair and back-combed all of it up, with the assistance of my coworker, D’arcy! I then picked out specific pieces to showcase and pinned them into place. The artistry is in the finishing details. I finished Le’s style with Alterna’s Caviar Glitterati Shimmer, a Sparkling Shine Spray!

To maintain your event updo during the night, it is helpful to have your style set with a maximum hold finishing spray, such as Alterna’s Hemp Organics Color Hold Maximum Hold Volume Lock hair spray or Alterna’s Caviar Anti-Aging Extra Hold Hair Spray (with Color Hold). When you come in for your updo, it is best to wear either a very loose top or a button-up shirt that can be removed without wrecking your hair. After you get home, it is advisable to not take a nap or take a shower or bath, as steam and moisture will soften the hold of your updo and it may fall.
