New Inspirations!

We are extremely excited and inspired as stylists any time a new tool is introduced that we have never used before. Emerson Salon recently received a new concept in styling by Kevin.Murphy called the WAVE.CLIP. This well designed tool is intended to create soft, consistent, undulating waves on medium to long hair. Our receptionist, Ashley, graciously volunteered to let me play with them on her hair.

IMAG0283

We started with dry, stick straight hair and applied Anti.Gravity because of its style setting properties in addition to being weightless in the hair once heat activated. The product was applied to the midshaft to ends in order to maximize the style where we apply the clips (they open and close with just a click!)

IMAG0278

The point of the clips is two fold: 1) you use as many clips as needed to create a fluid wave from 3″ from the part line to the bottom of the section and 2) there are ventilation holes to aid in faster drying. Once all the clips were applied (see how Kevin Murphy demonstrates the WAVE.CLIP in the video below) I briefly used high heat on a low setting to activate the wave pattern in the clips.

Once the WAVE.CLIPs were quickly removed, the wave achieved was soft, shiny and great for a day at work or happy hour with friends! Just think how much time is cut out when you don’t have to curl or start from freshly washed hair. This look could be a great way to transition your hair from day into night, work into fun!

Want to get that quick, soft wave too? Book a styling appointment at Emerson Salon and experience a style revolution!

Emma Stone Goes Back to Red at the MTV Movie Awards

At the MTV movie Awards, Emma Stone showed up with fantastic locks of red hair. After going blonde to be in the new Spiderman movie, she is back to Red. She is not as dark a red as she was for her role in Easy A, but still sported that same red/orange tone.

To replicate the style she sported at the awards turn to MoroccanOil and Kevin.Murphy. I would prep the hair with the MoroccanOil Oil Treatment to condition the hair and help retain your color. Then I would roughly blow dry the hair with Kevin.Murphy Hair.Resort to add texture to the hair. Follow this up with the steps in the video below

Ready, Set, Sexy Hot Rollers, Go!

Want sexy flowing curls? Want volume for your up do? Hot rollers are the answer! They provide easy volume, texture and long lasting curl! With good hair products and a set of multiple-sized hot rollers you can create great Holiday hair with ease! First you need a good set of hot rollers in different sizes. Clients always ask what rollers they can get that aren’t too expensive but still good quality. I found Conair Xtreme Instant Heat Multisized Hot Rollers and LOVE them!

Waves that Bounce:

Hot rollers will give you lift at the roots, volume all around and a soft wave! First use Alterna Curl and Control Styling Cocktail in damp hair and blow dry straight. Then in 2 inch sections roll in small hot rollers, spray in Alterna Working Hairspray as you go to give a more flexible hold. Don’t worry about taking exact sections in any particular order; you don’t want it to look too perfect. When the rollers have cooled in your hair take them out, shake your head, brush your fingers through your hair with a dab of Moroccan oil to smooth it, and you’re set!

Smooth Wave:

Want your hair smooth and straight with a nice wave at the end for a polished look? Rollers are the answer for this as well! Again you will start with damp hair, put in Alterna Straight and Sleek Styling Cocktail and blow dry. Then part your hair off to one side, taking 3 inch sections starting on top and roll them with large rollers all over the head. When the rollers cool take them out and spray a paddle brush with Alterna Working air spray, and brush the front section to the side. Finish the look by loosening the curl and brushing the curl to the bottom. Don’t worry about brushing the curl out completely, with good product you won’t lose the curl!

Volume and curl, up and away:

Loose wave up do’s are a great look for holiday parties, and never look over done! First put in a root volumizing product like Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity at the root and Alterna Texture Glaze when your hair is damp. Now blow dry. Alternate medium to large rollers starting at the crown and stagger sections in a brick pattern along the back of your head. When the rollers cool tease the roots all over with a fine tooth comb, spray hair with Alterna Working Hairspray. Then gather the hair in the center of your head, twist up, and insert bobby pins all over to secure it. You can also use accessories, such as a simple ribbon, totie the look together!

The Quick and Easy Wave

In the salon we try to do our best to teach our clients the most efficient ways to create a a specific look so they can recreate it at home. We realize you don’t always have 2 to 3 hours to fuss and preen for a particular style. Here are some quick ways to put quick wave texture into your medium to long length hair without feeling like you are spending high maintenance time!

Wavy-Curly-Hair-Styles-2011

The Classic Body Wave:

  • If starting from freshly washed hair, towel dry and apply Anti Gravity by Kevin Murphy as a setting lotion. It is heat activated and gives great shine. Using your fingers only, dry the hair completely. Lightly spray all over with Working Spray by Alterna. In 3-4″ square sections, use a barrel iron to start a curl 2″ from the root and slowly work the ends through the curling iron. Release the hair and allow to cool. Using a boar bristle brush, brush out the curls into waves using tension. This creates a classic beauitful body and wave that lasts all day into night. It’ll look like a gorgeous 30′s film starlet!

The Loose Wave

  • This is a good technique If you are starting from straight, dry hair and you have only 10 minutes! Apply Motion Lotion Curl Enhancer by Kevin Murphy to the midshaft-ends all over. This product also contains sunscreen so is great for outdoorsy girls! Lift all the hair into a ponytail at the crown of the head and then twist. Hold for 30 seconds. Then allow the hair to fall from the twisted ponytail and scrunch. Spray with Session Spray lightly by Kevin Murphy and scrunch a bit more for loose, beachy wave.

The Consistent Wave:

  • If you are starting with wavy, frizzy, dry hair. Apply Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy to the midshaft to ends. Its filled with shea butter and tons of antioxidants that will impart shine, control frizz and add moisture. Take a large section of hair in front of the ears and clamp the barrel iron onto the section 3″ from the root without rotating it. Then remove after 15 seconds. Then flip over the curling iron and continue the wave pattern after the first bend. (convex curl (moving out) into concave curl (scoops in.) Continue down the section until the shiny, consistent and supple wave is complete. Continue around the head in large sections. Once complete and cooled, spray with Caviar Working Spray and lightly comb with a wide toothed comb.

Empower yourself and use these easy tips to give yourself a fresh look for an evening out, an event or just for fun!

Kevin Murphy’s Screen Sirens

felicity

Emerson Salon recently had the great fortune of receiving a visit from Kevin Murphy’s Session Styling Assistant, Felicity Davis, to share some styling techniques with us. She styles for Vogue magazine and travels the world creating iconic hairstyles of every type for shoots and runways.

The goal of the demonstration at Emerson Salon was to show off some different finishing techniques that we can accomplish on female clients who have fine shoulder length hair. This hair type can be a challenge to style due to its inconsistent ability to hold a soft curl or wave once styled. Further, sometimes using an iron curler on this hair type is just not sufficient to hold an all day classic style. With a lot of red carpet and magazine hair lately evoking the soft volume of 1930′s style movie starlets like Veronica Lake or Lauren Bacall achieving this look is essential.

Felicity Davis Class 001Felicity Davis Class 026

The first of our two beautiful models for this demonstration was Lisa. She has naturally wavy/curly hair and has difficulty with frizz and style longevity.

  • First, Felicity washed Lisa’s hair with Maxi Wash. This is not a clarifier or chelating shampoo with a higher ph level. This product uses alpha hydroxy to exfoliate oil and product buildup out of the hair cuticle in order to prep the hair for the style. This may take 2 -3 times at the bowl to start to create the correct “egg white” lather that indicates clean hair.
  • Then, Felicity applied Born Again Essential Treatment and lightly rinsed. This moisturizes and repairs the hair using conditioning agents derived from Olive Leaf, Shea Butter, Omega 3 and Omega 6.
  • Once the hair was towel dried, Felicity used Staying Alive with berdok root and Bodyguard Hydrating Lotion with peruvian bark in order to better protect the hair during the styling session. In addition, Anti Gravity setting lotion using lavender oil was also applied in order to eliminate flyaways and hold the curl. (If this sounds like a lot of product, its ok! Kevin Murphy’s line is designed to be weightless and is performance based.)
  • Then, the hair was hand dried until bone dry.
  • The hair is divided into 8 sections (2 on each side and 4 in the back). Each section is curled with a smaller curling iron and then set on the Kevin Murphy brand curlers that uses a ball and elastic to secure it in place. Once the hair cools for 5-10 minutes, the curlers are taken out.
  • The curls are finger separated and then brushed out with a natural boar bristle brush. This brush is used to back brush under sections to create volume and then, Session Spray is applied lightly to the hair and then worked slowly with the brush into a smoother wave.

Picture 5Picture 6

Our second stylish model was Lara who has fine, straight hair that has issues with creating volume. For years, it was common practice to beat one’s hair into straight submission with serums and flat irons. Felicity calls this the age of “slip technology” where the hair’s cuticle is forced down for smoothness. Now, volume is more trendy and current, and this is the look we wanted to achieve with Lara.

  • To get ready for this, Felicity prepped Lara’s hair with Maxi Wash and Born Again Treatement for protection during the styling session.
  • Once towel dried, Anti Gravity is applied liberally and hand dried.
  • The hair is then twisted, iron curled and set vertically on the Kevin Murphy rollers, secured with a pin curl clip. Felicity called this her signature “Zulu Curl” and we loved it!
  • The style was finished similarly to Lisa’s, but refined with additional pinning on the short pieces of the bang area. A little session spray and working with it with the brush is all was needed to make this glam style.

Felicity’s tips were super helpful and its always good to get a fresh perspective on how to make our clients look fabulous! Thanks Felicity! (If you want to learn more, keep reading this blog or go to the Kevin Murphy website for more product information or styling tutorials.)

Jennifer Love Hewitt’s New Short Hairstyle

jennifer-love-hewitt-in-hairstyle 1269437767_hewitt-290

Jennifer Love Hewitt has just come out with a book entitled, “The Day I Shot Cupid,” that reviews the fun lessons she has learned about love while dating in Hollywood. She compiled tips and funny anecdotes to encourage women to take control of their love experiences through the power of text messaging, personal grooming and more. Jennifer recently broke up with her Ghost Whisperer co-star, Jamie Kennedy, but tapped him for a modern male perspective. His wit and expertise help provide balance in the book by giving tips on male behavior.

Over the years, Jennifer has had many boyfriends…. and hairstyles. Recently, she cut off her long layered locks into a layered bob style with loose waves. She has gone shorter before as evidenced by the sleeker style bob she sported a few years back.

Short_Hairstyles 1269535528_jenniferlove_lg

Jennifer changes her haircolor often and has worn soft black, dark chocolate, dimensional browns with golden highlights and even an all over light chestnut red/brown. Her medium complexion works well with many changes but drastic reds and blondes probably should be avoided.

To achieve Jennifer’s latest look of loose waves on shorter styled hair, use these tips:

  • After showering, lightly scrunch the wet hair with a towel to remove excess moisture.
  • Apply Motion Lotion by Kevin Murphy from mid shaft to ends. This product is a curl enhancer and also helps hold the style even on finer hair textures.
  • Using a medium sized round brush, blow dry the hair section by section from the nape up. Make sure to over direct the crown and bang sections above the head to maximize volume and body like in the picture.
  • Spray the hair lightly with Working Spray by Alterna in order to provide better hold.
  • Take the hair in 1- 2″ sections about 3″ from the part. Curl the hair vertically from the temples all around the head. Finger separate the curls into loose waves after the hair has cooled.
  • Spray with Extra Hold by Alterna to finish.

What style will Jennifer do next? Better yet, what style will you do next? Let us know!

Thanks Whitney!

yelp

Emily just received a brand new review on our Yelp profile:

“I love Emily! I never thought it mattered what I did with my hair, since it is fairly wavy. I’ve had friends cut it, gone to nice expensive salons, and most often, done something like Supercuts. However, due to a promotion I tried out Emerson, and booked an appointment with Emily, whose description says she likes long wavy hair. The only haircut I have ever been impressed with. Seriously I had SO many compliments, even straight guys I knew who never said much about how I looked tell me I was a “new woman” with this haircut. I love it, and have been back twice now to have it done again. Emily is great, friendly, easy to talk to, and so talented!! Highly recommended!”Whitney

Sara McLachlan at the Olympics

0

Sarah McLachlan’s song, “One Dream,” was part of the opening ceremonies last night. She not only performed the song brilliantly with fabulous dance accompaniment, amazing set pieces and lighting but she looked darn fine doing it! She wore a great necklace piece of “bling” in the shape of large flowers that totally glowed and showed off her natural beauty and…..great looking hair!!

Sarah looks like she has had her hair permanently colored all over with a deep, dark burgundy brown. The subtle warmth softens her hair and catches the blue light that danced around the stadium.

Want to achieve her hair style? Try these tips:

  • Start with clean, dry hair on naturally straight texture on medium to long hair: Add Motion Lotion by Kevin Murphy to the mid shaft to ends. This curl enhancer will help in holding the style and retain its bounce and form. Start iron curling from the nape up on sections 2″ wide. Spray lightly with Working Spray by Alterna. (Take the sections vertically to aid in creating the most consistent volume possible.) Iron curl until 2″ from scalp on the nape and sides. You may go close to the scalp on the crown and around the hairline. Using a cushion brush, lightly brush the curls into softer waves. Brush the waves away from the face after backbrushing the top of the head. Scrunch and set with a low setting blowdryer. Spray with Alterna’s Firm hold spray. (for easier styling you can shampoo set the hair on velcro rollers ahead of time after applying Motion Lotion)
  • On naturally wavy/curly hair: Start with damp, towel dried hair. Add Morrocan Oil Styling oil on the mid shaft to ends. Using your fingers, create twisted tendrils around the headshape and diffuse (either with a blowdryer attachment or by scrunching lightly.) Once dry, use iron curl to define the curl on and around the hairline. Lightly pick out the waves with your fingers. Cushion brush the waves around the hairline back and spray entire head with Working Spray. Finger separate waves again, spray with Firm Hold Spray by Alterna and scrunch. Spray Hemp Spray Shine for sheen.

We look forward to the games and hope the closing ceremonies are just as good as the opening!

Megan Fox: High Maintenance?

Not everyone can be a model and actress like Megan Fox, but she does always look great! In this look on the left (above), her hair has been twisted around a large barrel curling iron; held till her hairdresser’s fingers get hot, then the iron is taken out. Her hair is then let to cool and, once cool, is raked through with fingertips with professional hair product designed to enhance shine and her waves. You can achieve this finish on your hair with Fudge’s Hair Varnish, if your hair is thick or coarse. For finer hair textures, Alterna’s Caviar Sculpting Putty is best!

Many women wonder what Megan’s hair color is. The truth is, her hair is dark brown. The tone of her hair changes in certain light, and/or when her stylist enhances her color from time to time with golden highlights for warmth, a cool silver overlay, or a neutral espresso brown, as displayed in these great photos! Overlays, toners, and highlights are great ways to enhance one’s base color without damaging long hair nor emptying one’s pockets, as changing the tone is not a permanent hair process, but rather, a nice accent/accessory!

Don’t worry, Megan’s hair in Transformers: Revenge of The Fallen is natural-looking; distressed, messy, and sans product…just as it should be when being chased by crazed robots with explosions happening all around you, etc.!!!
