Summer Formalities

As the summer draws to a close, we look back at some of the events over the past season. Namely, all of the joyous weddings that occurred from June to September. From backyard ceremonies to elaborate ballroom receptions, the main focus is on the bride and groom on their big day. Here we provide some tips for both on how to organize for such a large occasion!

Brides:  A good thing to do first is to figure out what your budget is. Bridal hairstyles can range from $85-$110, depending on the length of the hair and the style desired (does it need to be flat ironed or curled, etc?) We recommend receiving a light trim to your haircut 1-2 weeks beforehand to remove any split ends. In addition, if you will be attempting any color services it is good to receive them 2 weeks ahead of time in case the color needs adjustment.

Some brides choose to utilize a paid practice session ($40 an hour) in order to eliminate any anxiety about the style before the ceremony. We try out the style, take pictures and troubleshoot any problems and then take the hair down and wash it before you leave. If you have your veil or any hair jewelry beforehand, the practice session is the perfect time to figure out how they will be planned into the overall style.

The important thing to do before consulting a stylist for your wedding hair is to find lots of pictures of hair that excites you. You can even bring in pictures of hair you absolutely do not like as this will aid your stylist to better hone what your aesthetic is. Do you want height? Do you want all of your hair up, half down or all down? What are some adjectives you would use to describe what you want your hair to look like (soft, romantic, wavy, sleek, shiny, etc.)? All of these elements will better assist you to becoming happy with your formal style!

If you are looking to create a formal style on your own, try using these products:
Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna for picture perfect shine before and after styling
Working Spray by Alterna for applying before curling for flexible hold
Easy Rider by Kevin Murphny for smoothing flyaways into the style
Session Spray by Kevin Murphy for hard hold when the style is complete

Grooms: We recommend receiving an extended consultation with an Emerson stylist to determine what is the desired result for the big day. Feel free to bring your bride with you for this initial consultation as we are sure she might have input! Make your haircut appointment for 2 weeks beforehand and then book a quick “line up” for the day before or day of. A “line up” would be where only the edges around the ears and nape are trimmed with clippers. Whether you intend to have your hair parted or fauxhawked or messy, two great go-to products for guys are Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy for frizz control and light hold and  Night Rider for matte finish and firm hold.

Did you attend a beautiful nuptial this season? Already have invitations to more? Make an appointment for your style with Emerson Salon today.

Wedding Hair Trends for Spring

It’s that time of year again. Love is in the air and wedding bells are ringing. Don’t be the bride that looks back on her photos 5 years from now and says “What was I thinking when I got my hair done?!” I say this because it happened to my cousin not too long ago. Of course you want to stay trendy, but don’t go overboard. Ladies – less is more! Luckily, the trends this year are classic, sophisticated and if done properly, they are timeless.

-1

The birdcage veil – I love this look. It is simple, classic, understated and what is in right now. I wore one at my wedding a few months ago. They come in all different lengths. Some with rhinestones, feathers, flowers or nothing at all. These veils are more playful and stylish. I prefer these to traditional veils as they don’t hide the face as much, if at all. They are also easy to make. A great way to add your own touch to your special day. Just attach the netting to a comb with a little fishing line and add as much or as little sparkle as you want.

-3

If any of you saw the Sex and The City movie a few years ago, you definitely know what is next on my list – The feathered hair piece. Carrie Bradshaw’s teal, bird head piece was a dramatic version that went well with her couture gown. There are definitely more simplified versions of this look that may better suit your style. I personally love the drama and the color that you can add with these feathers. Just remember to wear something that you are comfortable in and won’t mind seeing in pictures years from now.

-2

If you’ve got a lot going on with your dress or simply prefer a more sleek look, try a side bun. If you wear side bangs, pull your hair to the opposite side in which you comb them. Loose, low buns are always in style and even more so now. Celebrities are wearing their hair like this on red carpets everywhere.

Plan Early For That Bridal Updo

Are you planning on getting married this summer/fall? If so now is the time to start planning out that perfect bridal updo for your wedding.

Start atleast 6 months before your wedding. Talk to your stylist about different updo options and set up appointments to try out various updos.

You want to figure out which updo will look best for you and how long it will take to have it done. You want to know ahead of time how long your updo will take so that on your wedding day you can plan enough time to avoid rushing. Finally talk to your stylist about the 6 month plan. What you can do in those six months to get your hair healthy & ready so it can look its best.

Wedding Hairstyle Tips

Here are some great wedding hairstyle tips

  • Decide on a hairstyle before you choose your veil or headpiece.
  • Play with a few styles before finalizing your look.
  • Visit your hairstylist at least six months before the wedding to set up a hair care regimen.
  • Touch up your existing hair color two weeks before the wedding.
  • Prepare a hair emergency kit for reception touch ups.
  • Think about whether your hairstyle will hold up at an outdoor wedding.
  • Match your hairstyle to your gown in degree of formality.
  • Consider extensions and hairpieces to add volume for special hairstyles.
  • Plan special hairstyles for the bridal shower and rehearsal dinner.
  • Get a final trim two weeks before the wedding.
  • Wear a buttoned-down shirt to your wedding day hair session.
  • Talk to your hairstylist to set a shampooing and conditioning schedule for the days before the wedding.
  • Invest in a good haircut. You’ll need less styling if you have a good foundation.
  • Decide if you will remove your veil after the ceremony. You’ll need to adjust your hairstyle accordingly. (from hairstyle tips)
