Dev of the Cataracs, most noted for her song Bass Down Low, recently came out with the song Top of the World. Known for her Electronic stylings and “sing-talk” vocals, Dev is making a name for herself in the music world.
She is a girl for flair and texture. Her haircut is super layered and is cut to be shorter on her right and longer on her left. To get her short, punky texture, spray Kevin.Murphy Heated.Defense on dry hair and flat iron with a 1/2″ wide iron. Then use Night.Rider to define the texture.
She also likes to create a pompadour in her hair at times (like at the top of the post and 2:25 in the video). This style can be surprisingly easy to create. When I do this style, I like to start with Kevin.Murphy Body.Builder mousse to create volume and then I blow dry the hair back on top, and down on the sides. Once dry I push the front of the hair forward to create the pomp and use Kevin.Murphy Session.Spray to hold the style, pinning any hair that need be pinned.

Yet again, I am impressed by Adele. I love, love, LOVE her! Her new single, ‘Rolling in The Deep,’ has been on repeat in my head for weeks. The official video for the single is unique, artistic, and refreshing. I came across an alternate video with the studio footage and was in awe! From her voice, to the side bun she rocks, to her lashes, she has a great sense of personal style. Her hair throughout both videos are great inspiration for summer hair styles.
My favorite look of hers from these videos is her side bun with a twisted bang! For a good look at this, go to 2:06 and 2:45 on the video. To get this look you need to start with the right products. When your hair is damp work in Kevin.Murphy’s Anti.Gravity for root volume, and Hair.Resort for texture and hold. Then blow dry your hair upside down for maximum volume. Start with parting out your bangs; remember that the farther over the eye you go, the better.
Back comb/tease the rest of your hair at the roots, and then smooth the surface down with a brush so that you don’t see all the back combing you have done. The bun will be on the opposite side you parted your bangs. When you’re smoothing out your hair, smooth it towards the side the bun will be on. Loosely pull the hair into a low pony tail behind your ear, level with your jaw. Once it is in the pony tail tease it with a brush, again smoothing the surface. Twist your hair around the base of the pony tail and secure it with bobby pins to create the bun. The bangs are the easy part! All you have to do is twist them away from your face and pin the end into the base of the bun.
If you watch the video closer you will see she has a few different styles you can re-create with the basics I showed you! Good luck and enjoy!
Pop icon, Jennifer Lopez is back on the scene! With her newest single, “On the Floor” (check it out below), she rocks a few different hair styles. She wears her long textured hair down to whip it about, and her more elegant updo. In this post, we are going to focus in on her style with her hair let down.
This first picture, the cover of the single album, is very similar to that of the hair in the video. Here she is given lots of layers that allow us to see more movement when she dances in the music video.
She doesn’t have fringe, but she has some facial framing to allow for texture around the face. Her color is highlighted with Balayage using color to create a golden borwn color with cool gold highlights. This helps emphasize the texture her hair is given
As for styling, I would use Kevin.Murphy Anti.Gravity in her damp hair to give volume to the hair and the Alterna Texturizing Glaze for texture. When it is almost dry, I would grab my large round brush and start to blow dry the hair. At her front hairline, be sure to blowdry with the round brush at the base of the hair to give yourself the volume she has at front. After each section of hair was dry and warm, I would twist the hair off of the brush and let it cool in a coil. Once all the hair is dry, break up the curl with your fingers and sprinkle in a bit of the Kevin.Murphy Powder.Puff at the base of the front hairline and throughout the ends to create volume and further emphasize texture.

Jessie J, UK singer of such songs like “Do it like a Dude” and “Price Tag” has a great look she is sporting. Not only are her songs toping the UK charts, but her hair is top-notch as well. You can listen to her song, Price Tag, at the bottom of the post.
Jessie J’s color is simple and straightforward. She is brought down to a black color that has a bit more blue added into it. I usually caution people against dying their hair black, as a good rule of thumb is to stay within about 2-3 shades of your natural color (though there are always exceptions!). IF you’re contemplating having black hair, ask yourself if it is really Black that you want, or if you just want to be noticeably darker. The black color really works for Jessie J, since she rocks a dark eye make-up palette and makes sure to use a proper foundation to avoid looking washed out.
As for her cut, it is an a-line bob (meaning it is shorter in the nape, becoming longer in the front). Her bangs are cut so they come down right to the eyes. Combined with her dark eye make-up, this makes her eyes really pop. The fringe is also cut al the way to her temples. This helps keep her face open, since her forehead and brow are hidden by her bangs. All together, Jessie J pulls off a Beautiful, simple and clean look that is to die for.
Here is her video for Price Tag! Enjoy!

Last Monday night, I went to go see Ellie Goulding perform at Neumos. Ellie sang beautifully and was adorable as ever. Her hair is lifted to a very light, cool blond color. Her haircut is very textured, with many shorter layers towards the face blending into the longer lengths at the bottom. She also has bangs that swoop from the left side of her face to the right.
I recommend starting with Alterna Caviar Volume shampoo and conditioner to start the style, the blowdry in some of the Alterna Hemp Texture Glaze to create a look that emphasizes your texture, but keeps the hair movable.

Spring is the time for transitions: changes in weather, flowers and foliage and of course, hair! This is the time of year when many clients come into the salon requesting transformations. They are “over” their winter style and are willing to shake it up with a new haircolor or new haircut. Even if you are only minimally adjusting your look for the new season it can make you feel revitalized and adds a little bounce to your step knowing you have a fresh, crisp style.
A perfect example of someone slightly altering their look is the TV and film star, Katherine Heigl. Recently, the actress debuted a new style that is shorter than her usual long bob but longer than a pixie cut. We have seen Katherine in many lengths and haircolors but we love the modern edge that this new do gives her. The ultra light buttery blond really pops in the sun and her hairstyle is soft, accessible and able to achieve anything according to mood. The misconception is that there isn’t much versatility to a shorter style such as this but there are many options you can try with this haircut:
Curl it for a younger, saucier look. Its a nice brunch or coffee date do! Try using MoroccanOil Glimmer Shine Spray for shine and moisture before curling then finish by fingering through the curl and spraying with Alterna Caviar Working Spray,
Straighten it with volume at the crown for conservative elegance for a business meeting or networking event. Start with round brushing with Anti.Gravity by Kevin.Murphy then add a couple shakes of the Powder.Puff by Kevin.Murphy into the crown. Finish with Working Spray.
Funk it up with a fibrous product. Blowdry roughly with Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna for shine then add Styling Putty by Alterna for texture and “piece-y”ness. Finish with Extra Hold Spray by Alterna for lasting hold to your do.
We can’t wait for warmer weather and are standing at the wait at Emerson Salon for when you are ready to transform your everyday Spring accessory….your hair!
Elly Jackson has amazing style, presence, and personally, I enjoy her music. She has a cutting edge hair design that is stylistically versatile. The Haircut is achieved with a combination of cutting and texturizing techniques. Deeper texture is cut into the top of her hair to give volume and support to her changing hair styles.
Her style can be achieved by prepping your hair with Kevin Murphy Angel Wash and Angel Rinse; both designed for fine, color-treated hair. After your hair is prepped, spray Kevin Murphy Body Builder Mousse into your hand; emulsify and apply with your fingers throughout the hair, starting on the sides and blow dry the sides into place. Set the sides with Kevin Murphy Session Spray. For the top of the hair, blow dry into position using a wide-toothed comb, your hands, or a brush, until the hair is completely dry. Once dry and cooled, shake some Kevin Murphy Powder Puff powder into the hair on top and rub it into the hair for extra support and maximum volume. Finish the style with Fudge Membrane Gas or more of the Kevin Murphy Session Spray.
This past weekend, The Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art held its annual MET gala exhibiting and honoring women’s fashion. Its a star studded event and a perfect opportunity to see who was bold and beautiful and who was not. This year there seemed to be less daring fashions but more play with shorter hemlines and interesting silhouettes. The hair in particular was very diverse and showed how the right hair style can compliment a high end fashion piece.
We saw two hair trends emerge from the MET steps carpet. The first trend to show itself was the 1930′s -esque smooth waves and high shine. We saw a lot of this at the Oscars red carpet but this look differed in that the waves were tighter and more high fashion. Taylor Swift, Kate Bosworth and Sarah Jessica Parker all donned the trend. The winner of the night overall was Kate Bosworth. Her hair was phenomenal and probably utilized many “old school” techniques like shampoo setting pin curls and finger wave patterns. (An honorable mention goes to SJP as she has had some hair missteps over the last year. Her color was perfect and soft and the waves weren’t too distracting from her gorgeous Halston gown.)
The other trend of the evening was the slightly messy and “unkempt” loose waves with some light frizz . It is somewhat disappointing to see this “meh” hair in contrast to the wonderful gowns but its generally understood that at such an event the hair is not the star of the gala. We want to bring our attention to the intricately constructed gowns. Claire Danes and Chloe Sevigny stayed understated but accessible with their hair looks. Claire had tousled, messy waves around her shoulders and Chloe took her relaxed wave into a simple, messy updo.
Lastly, a look unto itself was Renee Zelweger’s blond bob with texture and facial framing. Noone else had anything similar to her hair and she smoldered with it! Going shorter is always a risk but this length is great as it must be easy to style and looks great messy or perfectly coiffed.
Looking to use one of these trends on your hair? Here are some tips:
Always start with freshly shampooed and conditioned hair.
Use a thermal protectant like Bodyguard by Kevin Murphy (before blow drying.) It drives out water moisture and leaves in the Peruvian bark moisture needed during heat styling.
Use a flexible hairspray like Alterna’s Working Spray while styling until you are completely finished. Then use a harder hold to set. Try Session Spray by Kevin Murphy.
Don’t forget the shine. When taking pictures you want the hair to gleam regardless of the amount of hairspray added. Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna is great during styling because not only is it shiny, but if you make a mistake it can break down extra product in the hair. When complete, use Spray Shine by Alterna: it gives a luminous shine but sits on the hair and does not break down product.
And remember! These trends are only for inspiration. Make your hair look your own by working with natural textures or play with hair jewelry.
We love fabulous hair whether it be formal or casual, trendy or classic. Have fun with your hair! Come in to Emerson Salon and we promise you’ll enjoy it!
“She and Him” is a newer two person band started by Zooey Deschanel and Matt Ward. Most people know Zooey as a film actress in such movies as Elf, 500 Days of Summer, and the Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. She also has been writing and singing songs most of her life and continues to do so now after working on the movie, The Go-Getter, where she met Matt Ward. Zooey tends to write most of the lyrics and melodies herself and Matt (the consummate guitarist) fills in the blanks by producing and arranging. Their music is effervescent but tempers the darker themes with an ambivalent sense of fun.
She and Him just released their second album,”Volume Two,” and just put out a Glee-esque video of “In the Sun.” They have already kicked off their international tour and will be performing here in Washington State this summer at the Sasquatch Music Festival in the Gorge Amphitheater.
Zooey’s hair is one of her trademarks and has utilized a heavy blunt bang to trademark her look. The hair color is an all over darkest brown with dimensional balayage pieces of medium orange brown on the ends for movement. Her cut is a simple long layer haircut with soft texture on the ends.
Want to achieve this style? Here are some recommendations:
Towel dry your hair after shampooing/conditioning by scrunching with a towel. This gets the moisture out without roughing up the hair cuticle and creating unwanted frizz.
Apply Morroccan Oil Styling Cream to the midshaft to the ends. This gives control to the blowout and cuts down on blow dry time.
Section by section, from the nape upwards, use a boar bristle round brush to create soft, fullness while drying. The smaller the barrel of brush the more bend that is achieved on the hair.
To create bounce and wave, overdirect the brush slightly upwards while drying. Make sure to direct the hair dryer nozzle down the hairshaft in order to maintain smoothnesss. Then, twist the hair brush slowly to create small, soft spirals to the hair. Slowly pulled the hair out of the brush and allow to cool while completing the rest of the head.
Once the longer hair is done, spray lightly with Working Spray by Alterna and scrunch the ends with your palms.
For the bang: Start by flat wrapping the bangs around and over the forehead to create a natural fall blow dry. This technique creates tension with the hair around the skull’s roundness and makes beveling the hairstyle easier with a cushion or round brush. A good product to add control to the bang style would be Easy Rider by Kevin Murphy. Its highly conditioning with shea butter and also imparts sparkly shine when heat styled. Spray with Working Spray on the bangs and voila!

Over the past 11 years Will Gregory and Alison Goldfrapp have explored many facets of electro spun tunes through their unique collaboration. We continue to get excited by the influx of quality female electro/synth artists like Goldfrapp. Their newest album (just released) is called,”Head First,” and leads with the single, “Rocket.” The entire album consists of fantasy/ Xanadu-esque melodies with an up tempo mainstream beat. This newest piece is a departure from Goldfrapp’s last album,”Seventh Tree,” which explored slowly paced ambient songs with poetic lyrics. Goldfrapp will be on tour this year and will be in California specifically this coming June 2010.
In the video for “Rocket,” Alison sports some major style with the newest accessory- black leather half gloves. Rihanna, Kimberly Caldwell and others have been modeling this must have in TV appearances, videos and live performances. In addition, Alison’s hair has always been gorgeous with its soft golden blond hue and natural, shiny, wavy texture. Want this haircolor? Ask your stylist for an all over color that utilizes beige and golden blond. If starting with darker artificial pigment, bleach lightener may be used to color correct to a lighter shade.
When styling on naturally wavy/curly hair: Towel dry after washing then rough dry with a medium setting blowdryer until 60% dry. Apply Morroccan Oil Intense Curl Cream to the midshaft-ends. Scrunch wave/curl into your palm in addition to creating soft twists. Use a diffuser attachment on your blowdryer when drying on a high heat low velocity setting. Once dry, set the style with a shot of cooler temperature air. Mist with Rapid Repair Spray by Alterna for shine and luminosity.
When styling on naturally straight hair: Towel dry after washing and add Antigravity by Kevin Murphy to the entire head. Blow dry on a medium heat setting while the head is upside down. Once dry, lightly mist entire head with Working Spray by Alterna. Using a barrel iron, curl 1-2″ sections of hair all over the head starting at the nape. When done, lightly finger separate the waves and spray lightly again.
Pretty soon, Goldfrapp’s entire album will be moving up the charts as they criss cross the globe spreading their music and style!
